Geotagging raws/ importing xmp files

I'm shooting exclusively in Sony ARW raw format and look for an solution, now for over a year, to geotag my images inside Aperture - so far with no success. It seems to be an unholy alliance between Sony, not allowing to embed geotagging information into their RAW formats, and Aperture being unable to import xmp sidecar files.
I can import import a folder containing ARW files with accompanying xmp files (created with an application like Geotag and containing the geotagging information for the unaltered RAWs) into Lightroom, and have all geotagging information incorporated into the EXIF fields of the Lightroom database automatically.
But so far I found no way to get this information into Aperture, neither natively, nor with the help of Automator actions, AppleScripts or plugins.
I really hope, the next version of Aperture improves on this. Meanwhile I've downloaded the Lightroom 3 beta to check whether this could become an alternative to Aperture ...

Sorry for answering my own post, but I figured out a slight work around, and others may be interested:
I have my photos arranged in folders containing 75-125 photos each. For each photo I created an iView catalog. Each catalog was then imported into the appropriate album in Aperture using Annoture.
My struggle earlier was trying to load all my images into a single iView catalog. Annoture seemed to double count images, and choke when synchronizing large numbers of pictures (1000+).

  • Importing xmp files or keywords to raw files

Any ideas on how to import pre-existing keywords to raw files?
I have xmp side car files in the same directories as my raw files, but when importing into aperture, the xmp files are ignored. I have tried annoture to sync between iView and aperture, but found with large amounts of images, it is dreadfully slow, and did not actually import any keywords in my case. I can also get a list of keywords per image in a tab delimited file.
    Thanks!

  • Can't import XMP-Files from Bilora/Jobo Geotagger in Aperture 3.0.1

    Hello,
now I use Aperture 3.0.1 and have buy the Bilora Geotagger with the Photo GPS Software from Jobo.
But when I import the RAW-pictures in Aperture, Aperture says, can't read some files, that means the XMP Files. When I look in a editor in the XMP-files, they are version 1.0, I think they must works.
What can I do, or is this a bug in PhotoGPS or Aperture?
    Regards Ulrich

The solution to that problem was that the problem is Windows 7, and that iTunes and Quicktime are required to get audio to work.
As I listed in the first post, I have a mac (running off of the mac OS), and both iTunes and Quicktime already. So, that answer from that forum doesn't help.
I downloaded the sample thing successfully and ran it. So, there's still something wrong.
    Thanks for the effort, though.

  • RAW and XMP files

I searched and found questions regarding exporting files with the attached XMP files. I'm wondering how to import RAW files that have XMP files attached to them. I found a bunch of old image files that are pre-Aperture and iPhoto when I stored everything in my folder system. Can I import the RW files along with my adjustments? Thanks.

Simple answer is I don't believe so, but it'll only take a moment to try one, right?

  • Photoshop Elements 6 won't open RAW with XMP file.

    Hi,
I searched for an answer but, could not find an answer.
I edited a RAW file with Photoshop Elements 6 (mac). I saved the file and closed the program. Next day I fire up PSE6 and open the same RAW file; the file is unedited. How can I open the RAW file with the edits I made the day before? I see the xmp file in finder.
I'm still on the trial version. Camera is a Canon 50D. I can open and edit the RAW with out problem. When I start PSE6 Adobe update fails and gives me the options: Ignore,Relaunch,Send report to Apple.
After that PSE opens for me
Help me Obi Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.
    Thanks.

Are you hitting the save button? That is creating a DNG file someplace. If you just want to save your edits, that should happen automatically when you click Open or Done. If it doesn't, try going to your username>preferences folder and deleting the Adobe Camera Raw preferences.

  • Javascript to import xmp file

    Hi all,
I am trying to import metadata into the pdf file by perl script. In that using GetJSObject to do it.
    $jso = $pddoc->GetJSObject;
    $jso->metadata($xmp_data);
here $xmp_data contains xmp file data. i am getting error like this
Win32::OLE(0.1709) error 0x80010105. "The server threw an exception" in METHOD/PROPERTYGET "metadata"
OR is there any other way to set the metadata ie. custom data into the pdf file.
If anybody have idea, please share it. It's urgent task for me....
    Thanks,

  • How do I import xmp files that contain edits from another computer?

I edited some images on my laptop and the Metadata Catalog settings show changes are written into the .xmp files.  I copied both the CR2 and corresponding .xmp files to my Desktop computer.  When I imported the images into LR 5.5, the edits did not show up.
How do I get the corresponding .xmp files to update the CR2 files?  Or do I have to start over and import the LR Catalog from my Laptop for just this series of images?
If I send off my CR2 files for someone to edit and they send me back the .xmp files containing the edits, shouldn't I be able to update my original CR2 files???
    Thanks, Marc

Also for the info to be read 100% both computers need to be using the same version of LR. (e.g. Lr 4.x will not apply all the info from LR 5.x)

  • Making copies of RAWs and XMP files of select images into a new folder

I have a group of 120 or so select images from a group of 3000, the selects
three starred and red labeled. Now I would like to make a copy of those
select RAW files and their XMP files and place in a new folder in order to
burn a DVD of just those selects. How do I do this with LR? Export doesn't
seem to offer this option, I can't seem to copy and paste like a typcial
folder operation. I can drag the selects to another existing folder but
then it moves them from their original location.
    Any help appreciated.
    Windows XP.

Not currently from Within LR. Among other things Drag and Drop out of LR, which give you a copy w/o XMP sidecar on a Mac, is broken for Windows.
You have to do it in Explorer.

  • Raw import .cr2 files with Canon SX1

    Hello !
Should Aperture be abble to import .cr2 raw files ?
If so , why can'nt I do it with my new SX1 from Canon ?
    Thanks
    Marcel Jacques

In the meantime try Adobe Digital Negative Converter (DNG converter): http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/ not positive it will be compatible with the SX1 CR2, but Aperture will read the converted DNG. The concept is that although these proprietary formats may come and go, the DNG format is here to stay for Decades to come. +worth a shot+!

  • Can "jpeg+raw" imported single file be split into jpeg and raw files?

I manage to choose to import my jpeg and raw pictures as single jpeg+raw files accidentely. What means with this format? can I split this "jpeg+raw" pictures into jpeg and raw again? If you edit a jpeg+raw picture are you just working with the raw file, I mean I saw that I could change the exposure on the file which you only can do on raw files. Is it a bad idea to import jpeg and raw pictures as a single file? I really don´t understand the properties of this "jpeg+raw"-file
    /Magnus Lightroom rookie

With RAW+JPEG, the JPEG is only used for the initial Library view, prior to generating previews from the RAW file. Once you have generated previews and/or developed the image, the JPEG is unused. The edits you make won't affect the JPEG at all. It is, however, still tied to the RAW as metadata, so deleting the JPEG will flag your image as having problems (and list it as "missing" even though it's very clearly in your catalog). Tuning off the option to handle RAW+JPEG together in preferences won't fix past combo images, but it will avoid making this idiotic mistake in the future. After turning it off, export your metadata to the RAWs, then delete them from the library (not the disk) and then reimport them without the JPEGs. Peace will rule the world.

  • Segregate 3+ star raw and xmp files for cloud backup

    Hi,
I don't think there is a way to do this, but I thought I would ask.  I have  few terabytes of photo's that are cataloged in lightroom.  Only a few hundred gig are photo's that I rated 3-5 stars and are the only ones that I would want to be 100% certain I don't loose in a perfect storm data loss scenario.
I currently use windows 7 import everything into one master folder for my catalog, then sort and rate them all. Is there any way to direct lightroom to separate all photo's with a 3-5 star rating on my actual hard drive into a separate folder or duplicate them into another folder for cloud back-up?  I've tried showing the rating column in window, but it doesn't seem to bring my lightroom star ratings into windows.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Thank you for the replies, sorry for the delayed repsonse, I've been in an "Edge Network" area for 2 days.  I am going to check ou the Publish services and see if this will meet my needs.
You are correct that this is simply my "hell in a handbasket" back-up solution.  I have a very robust local backup, that includes raid along with on and offsite versioned back-ups, so this is simply there just in case.  If I lost everything but these photo's I'd still be okay, it's only 20% of so of my catalog so it's more practical to back up 400 or 500 gb though uploads.  Backing up the whole catalog might be an option, but it's a lot of extra time and bandwidth.  Perhaps it will become more practical in the coming months and years.
Having said all of that, I would prefer to simply back-up the 3-5 star photo's in their original folders rather than duplicate them though an export.  I get the impression that the Publish services acts like a real-time dynamic filter that throws the 3-5 star photo's in a separate location that I will tag as a cloud back-up.  If I have to do it that way I will, but it's just more storage and complication.  Still it does provide a solution that I don't currently have.
    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Camera Raw does not read previously saved XMP files (Canon 60D)

    Hi,
I want to ask if it is a real problem or just me doing something wrong.
I open RAW files made with Canon 60D (Photoshop CS5, Camera Raw 6.6), then I do what a do (cropping, exposure changes, sharpen ... etc.), then I click the Done button. Camera Raw saves XMP files along with the RAW files. After this I want to do some more editing, I open the RAW files, but Camera RAW does not "remember" what it did just minutes before. I suppose that it is not reading the XMP files that it created.
So is it me or it is some kind of bug?
I don't have this problem when editing RAW files made with Canon 400D.
    Thanks for your time!

If I understand correctly the issue is not viewing in Bridge, but rather that ACR doesn't remember the changes.
There is a discussion in the Camera Raw forum about this issue of not always reading the changes after clicking Done in ACR.
    But no solution.

Yes, ACR doesn't remember/show the changes I made.
It seems that I have the same problem as the other forum member from the link. I tried to recreate the issue, but this time all went well and ACR displayed the changes I made ...
It is strange because I had the issue numerous times on two different windows PC's ...

  • Importing .xmp sidecar file doesn't populate IPTC info??

Good evening everyone.  I've been trying to import .xmp files alongside some of my old movies to save me from having to retype the IPTC info such as location, etc.  I have a folder which contains the .mov file I want to import, along with the .xmp file of the exact same name.  I thought this was automatic (at least from my perspective), put I guess not?  The .mov file imports just fine, but Aperture doesn't seem to populate any of the metadata fields with any info from the .xmp file.  I've tried this with different videos/xmp sidecar files with no luck.  Am I stuck re-entering all the metadata by hand?  I really don't have much info, but I have several hundred files I'm trying to re-import, so it could be a long week.  In case it helps, here's the xmp sidecar file that was created when I used iView Media Pro software pre-Aperture:

The Photoshop and/or Bridge forums would be more likely places to get answers to your questions. This forum is inhabited more by programmer types interested in implementing the XMP specification in applications we write.
I'd expect CS2 to ignore CS1 panels so I doubt that's the issue. Panels don't interfere with each other--they just offer different views of the data. In any case, move the extra panels to your desktop and see what happens.
As far as I know, all you need to do on the Mac is drag the CS1 application folder to the trash to uninstall it.

  • How to convert XMP files into JPEG ones?

I need to convert 16 xmp files into jpeg or tiff ones.

XMP files are metadata files, so you are wanting to print out the text metadata associated with these 16 images? You will usually see them once a raw file (like NEF or CRW) is processed through Adobe Camera Raw. XMP files are not images.

  • Does Lightroom save settings into a xmp file?

With Camera Raw, a xmp file is saved in the same folder with the same name of the image once we making any changes or settings to a image.
Does Lightroom save settings into a xmp file? If it does, why can't I find the xmp file in the image folder?

raw (cr2, etc.) - keywords, captions, and develop settings are written to a sidecar
dng, jpeg, tiff - keywords, captions, and develop settings are written to the file
All of these things are written to the LR catalog automatically. "Save metadata to file" saves them to the files themselves, in the above fashion. Develop settings are only written to files if you have that option checked. Automatic writing to files can also be activated.
