German keyboard/ characters

I'm a really new mac user! I need to be able to type German accents EASILY and can't figure out how to do this? Reset my keyboard or ... HELP!

Hi, Fortuna1 -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Two assumptions I'll make -
(1) That you are using Mac OS 9 (since that's the forum in which you posted)
(2) That you are after the umlaut characters and the funny double-S
If you currently have the US English Keyboard Layout active, you can do the umlaut by pressing the key-combo Option-u followed by the character you want. Works with capitals, tooExamples -
Option-u plus a types ä
Option-u plus e types ë
Option-u plus i types ï
Option-u plus o types ö
Option-u plus u types ü
Option-u plus y types ÿ
Option-u plus A types Ä
(etc.)
For the ß character, press Option-s. I think this may actually be a capital beta (Greek letter), but it bears a close resemblence to the old German character.
<hr>
You can also reset the keyboard to a German keyboard layout. This makes accessing some German and European characters easier, but means having to learn a new pattern for the keys. If you want to try that, make sure that German is checkmarked in the list in the Keyboard control panel. Once more than one language is checkmarked in that control panel, a small flag icon will be added to the main menubar, which represents the keyboard language menu. You can then use that new menu to select the language layout you want activre. You can use the utility Key Caps (usually found in the Apple menu) to see what's where in the new layout.

  • Missing characters in german keyboard layout

    I'm using Gnome 3 on a PC with a german keyboard with a physical layout like this one. The german layout is configured in the settings and mostly works as intended, but one key is mapped wrongly. The key next to the left shift key in the second row from below is supposed to have the characters "<" and ">" on it, but instead it produces "-" and "_", duplicating another key. As a result, there is no way to type the "less" and "greater" characters. The built-in keyboard layout viewer shows an US physical one (like this one, notice e.g. the "enter" key which occupies only one row instead of two in the german one and the wider left "shift" key), regardless of whether the german or an english (logical) layout is selected.
    So, if there is a way to change the physical layout, how do i do it?

    Hi, I have had that problem a while ago...the other way around. I'm from Germany and was missing German characters on my US keyboard. I wrote about how I solved this here: https://myubuntux.wordpress.com/2012/01 … d-in-xorg/
    I'm pretty sure this will help you solve your problem...at least introduce you to the tools I used.

  • Where can I buy a Macbook Pro or Macbook Air with german keyboard ?

    My daughter will soon go for 1 year to the US. I would like to buy a MB pro or MB air for her. Since she will return after this year to Germany, I am looking for an opportunity to get a model with German keyboard layout. In the online store, only US, french and spanish are available.
    Thanks in advance for your help,
    Henri

    I type German on the US keyboard all the time without having to switch keyboard layouts:
    option-u followed by a u o (and other letters, too) gives you ä ü ö ï
    option-s gives you ß
    option-2 gives you €
    You can even to French:
    option-` followed by, for example e, gives you è
    option-e followed by, for example e, gives you é
    option-c gives you ç
    option-i followed by e gives you ê
    There are [many more such combinations|http://www.usingmac.com/2007/12/12/100-mac-keyboard-shortcuts-for- creating-symbols] that yield other special characters.
    You can set up the built-in spell check to automatically detect what language you are writing in and you're set
    Personally I find the US keyboard much nicer to work with. I'm sure your daughter will get used to it and your wallet will thank you.

  • Can't use special character "option+5" on german keyboard

    After upgrading to Lion I have problems to select special characters on a german keyboard. Typing in TextEdit  "Option+5" does not display "[".
    Nothing happens. I always have to use PopChar to insert the "[" character.
    I already checked out all of the preference settings for the keyboard, layouts, international formats, ...
    Also I deleted the keyboard .plist file in the Lib-folder.
    All other special characters work fine without any problems, only the "option + 3, +4, +5, +6" does not show any character in the keyboard layout.
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    Alex

    Thanks for your answer, but I already checked this. I completely disabled all speak recognition.
    Not only one key doesn't work, but four in a line "option + 3, +4, +5, +6".

  • German Keyboard (Where are the ä, ö and ü keys???)

    It is great that the iPhone offers different keyboards and that the word corrections are adjusted accordingly, BUT where are the special characters such as ä, ö and ü??? I couldn't find them on the German keyboard. Any ideas?? Thanks.

    It actually works with c, e, i, l, n, s, y and z keys too. The objective appears to be to give easy access to all language-specific accented characters from any keyboard where those character-variants are not on their selected keyboard's display. It certainly works well and is an 'in-line' way of providing easy-access to the facility without cluttering the display still further with more options that are seldom used by most people in most cases.

  • Can I buy a Mac Pro in the U.S., with a German keyboard?

    can I buy a Mac Pro in the U.S., with a German keyboard?

    The Mac Pro Tower is NOT a laptop computer. It weighs 65 lbs, and holds four  full-size Hard Drives. It uses a detachable keyboard.
    US English
    Western Spanish
    French
    Japanese
    ... are readily available at the Apple Online Store, in wired and wireless.
    For German, you would have to call them and make special arrangements, or pick one up an additional keyboard when you get back home.
    This thing won't fit in your suitcase. Are you sure you want to pay to ship it home again? I would be tempted to sell it when you are leaving, and buy a new one at Home.
    A laptop would be a better choice. These are also available with the same four choices of languages (in all models) through the online store.
    You can make all the German characters and accents with the USEnglish keyboard, but some are two keystrokes.

  • How can I use premiere pro cc in english language with german keyboard layout/german shortcuts on a mac?

    Hi,
    how is it possible to use a german keyboard with its german shortcuts on premiere pro cc in english language on a mac?
    I use all my softwares in english.
    But aside adobe I can use or change in other softwares (Avid, FCP7, FCPX) to use german keyboard shortcuts on a german logic keyboard.
    With After Effects CC I could add a german .txt to a language folder to the installed english version and tataaa:
    I could use german keyboard and the german shortcuts on an english installed AE CC.
    And in PS there is also a trick.
    But in Premiere Pro CC this language .txt doesn´t exist.
    And there are many shortcuts that differ from english to german.
    Last Job I worked on a PC with the english installed language version, and I could work with the german QWERTZ Logickeyboard
    and use the german shortcuts.
    I googled and googled and even talked to the support. But no real helpful answer.
    Maybe it was easier to do in Premiere CS6. Was it possible there?
    So how is it possible to use a german keyboard QWERTZ with german shortcuts on Premiere Pro CC in english language on a mac?
    Thanks for your help.

    With all the apps shortcuts work just fine, just with Premiere Pro CC it doesn't do it at all .....

  • German Special Characters not displayed correctly in RTF  using code

    Hi ,
    In my code we are using webdynpro method
    WDResourceFactory.createResource(
    byte[] data, String resourceName,WDWebResourceType
    Type)
    Here in our code we are implementing this as
    ITemplateElement templateEl = wdContext.currentTemplateElement();
    WDResourceFactory.createResource(
    templateEl.getReportData(),
    reportName.substring(0, reportName.lastIndexOf('.')),
    WDWebResourceType.RTF); reportName.lastIndexOf('.')),
    Here templateEl.getReportData() returns a set of bytes which has some
    german special characters.
    We are generating the Bytes using String.getByes(),Just before
    String text = new String(in);
    collector.putBusinessObject(boName, bo);
    reportDocTemplateParser(collector, text);
    collector.removeBusinessObject(boName);
    String generatedText = collector.generateRTF();
    out = (null != generatedText) ? generatedText.getBytes() : null;
    The out put is the if i am giving a word with german special characters for eg:
    Betriebsübersichten it first gets converted to bytes and then passes through method WDResouseFactory.createResourse(.....) which creates an RTF file and finally in the RTF file it appears as Betriebsbbersichten the special character is not displayed correctly.
    i came to knw that while converting into bytes we have to make it RTF supported encoding.ie for eg generatedText.getBytes('cp1252').i even tried with other charactersets like ISO-8859,cp1253 and so on but none of them worked.
    It would be really great if you could suggest the needful.
    Thanks and Regards
    Neeta

    I soved this by using get_data function of response object. Then converting this into ISO-8859-1 charset.
    See code below.
    DATA :  lv_encoding   TYPE abap_encoding,
              lv_conv       TYPE REF TO cl_abap_conv_in_ce,
              lv_x_string   type xstring.
      lv_x_string = pv_http_client->response->get_data( ).
        lv_encoding = '1100'.
        lv_conv = cl_abap_conv_in_ce=>create(
                              encoding = lv_encoding
                                 input = lv_x_string ).
        lv_conv->read( IMPORTING data = pv_result ).

  • Caret character in numbers (iWork09) not working with german keyboard

    The caret caracter used to express "power to" in formulas can not be typed into formulas with the german keyboard layout. Using the caret key nothing happens. For text and strings in cells the caret key works. In iWork08 everything is fine. For formulas the caret character has such to be inserted using copy and paste.
    This is more or less a bug report. I could not find a way to tell Apple directly.
    Matthias

    Thanks
    I'm glad to get this info because I thaught that it was linked to physical keyboards which it isn't.

    Hello
    +In Numbers '09 we are unable to type the caret in this kind of formula =2^3 when we are using a keyboard layout where this key is a dead one.+
    +I tested Numbers in three languages:+
    English
    French
    German.
    +They behave exactly the same way with the keyboards layout where caret is a deadkey.+
    +Examples of tested layouts:+
    French,
    German,
    Swedish
    +At this time, we must use the Character Palette (or a copy paste) to enter the caret.+
    +I wish to add that this bug strikes only in the "edit formula" tool.+
    +Whe we type the content of a string, it works.+
    +We may use the caret to type the circumflex above thr e in this example:+
    +="c'est" & " le même"+

  • ACS 4.0 and german password characters???

    Hello. I have attempted to map ACS 4.0 to Windows AD 2003 as an External Database.
    This all works fine. The only weird thing is that ACS doesn't accept user passwords containing german special characters (such as ä,ö,ü).
    From the file "C:\Program Files\CiscoSecure ACS v4.0\CSAuth\Logs\AUTH.log" I get the following information:

    Is this an known issue in this release ? At the moment we map ACS 2.6 to Windows NT 4 as an External Database. In this configuration the
    authentication process works as well with german password characters!!!
    Thanks for help!
    Best Regards
    Matthias Enderle

    Hi
    Looks like you are doing PAP, if you switch to MSCHAP then ACS will never see the password (only a hash created by the supplicant)
    This will tell you whether the problem is ACS or AD.

  • Problem with german special characters in APEX

    Hi,
    we have a problem with all the special characters in german language in our Application.
    APEX version 3.1.0.00.32 is installed on a oracle database 9.2.0.6.0
    The nls_characterset of the database is: American_America.WE8ISO8859P1
    We have modified the wdbsvr.app file on our HTTP-Server like it's shown in the installationguide for APEX and have set the nls_lang parameter to American_America.AL32UTF8.
    If I look at the source code of the html-pages of our application, there are already the following settings in the header of every page:
    meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"
    With this settings all the german special characters like ä ö ü are not shown correctly in the browser.
    What can I do that the pages are shown correctly?
    Thanks for help!

    Hi Petra,
    ok, so my guess was correct. So the solution is to set the charset attribute in the HTML header to "charset=UTF-8". This is actually the way it should be. But I'm wondering why it is not in your case? Are you using a custom template for the page(s) in question where the charset attribute is set to a custom value? The meta tags in the HTML header are usually set by/through the #HEAD# substitution string in the header definition section of the page template, cp. one of the page templates in Shared Components --> Templates. And as far as I know you are not able to change this substitution string, you can only switch the inclusion on/off with the option "Include Standard CSS and JavaScript" in each page definition. (I might be mistaken, though, I'm quite new to APEX...)

  • Smart Web Printing does not show/print german special characters (äöü)

    I have installes Smart Web Printing on my computer with WIndows 7. I do use a german localization. Selected text is shown and printed correct, except german special characters ä ö ü. They are even not shown correctly in the menues of the application.

    Response to cor-el suggestions:
    I tried what you suggested as far as checking the theme (it's "Default 8.0") and deleting the sessionstore files (there was one .js file, one -1.js file and one .bak file). I still have the same slow response problems (especially typing, it has gone dead on me for a short time twice while typing this replay so far, now a third time) and lost of headers and trailers and some data.
    I did the suggested actions three times just to make sure that I was doing them correctly. On the first try, the sessionstore.js and sessionstore-1.js was more than twice the size of sessionstore.bak. Since doing what was suggested, the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak are, I believe, the same size. I did not write down their size is why I am not certain.
    The printing problem appears to only be with one website which is an investment website which I would prefer not to document here. I print from this website each weekday and I have confirmed that the printing problem started when the upgrade to version 8.0 occurred.
    I need a solution to this or I am going to either go back to IE (Ugh!) or find another browser. The typing delays are an extreme annoyance since I do lots on the Internet including a lot of emailing. The delays also involve the buttons to select functions within a website.
    Is there a way to get back to the version previous to version 8.0?

  • German special characters..

    I just got my first iPod this afternoon and am now in the process of uploading all my CDs into iTunes. However, some of my files require typing German special characters (umlauted vowels). I'm using a PC and the special character codes for PCs are not working in iTunes. I'm stumped!
    Anyone know how to access special characters? They seem to exist, since certain albums I've uploaded which have German titles are picking up umlauts.
    TIA....
    Bob

    Trevor,
    If the client application attempts to store a character such as the euro that is not defined in the database character set a replacement is selected and the clients representation will be lost. If the client uses a different code page to the databases character set the symbol can still be stored as long as both code pages have a code. The client must also have the character set component of NLS_LANG set to the client's character set.
    The solution is in finding a correct combination of the MS Windows code page that match the chosen Oracle client character set encoding for that character. The problems are with the client PC settings, and the resolution could be time consuming when looking for the available OS code pages and font information. You could find some information on code pages at the following Microsoft site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/typography/unicode/cscp.htm
