Get beach ball when trying to log in and can't go further

Hey guys/gals, looking for help.
My parents mac mini has locked up. My dad says he was burning cd's and one would not burn. The computer kept trying to read the disk to no avail. He managed to get the disk to eject, the computer rebooted, but when you click on the name at the sign in screen the beach ball shows up and you can't go any farther. I haven't tried to safe boot yet, but I figured I would post this to see if anyone could offer some help. To make matters worse my parents haven't done a backup in quite some time so it's in my best interests to try everything else first. Any help would be appreciated.
P.

Assuming your parents have the Intel Mini, try to boot from the install disc that came with it.
You'll need a wired (USB) keyboard.
When you are stuck at the beach ball, insert the install disc. Force a power off by holding down the power button on the back of the Mini for 5 seconds or more.
Then restart and hold down the C key as soon as the mini makes the startup chime. (You may have to experiment with the timing.) Keep holding down the C key until you see the "gears" spinning.
Once you boot from the install disc, select the keyboard type, but don't proceed any farther. Instead run DiskUtility from the Utilities menu at the top of the screen.
Have DiskUtility "Repair the Disk" and when that is done, have it "Repair Permissions". Hopefully that will be enough to get things working again.

  • Spinning Beach Ball when trying to access Oct. and Nov.

I can't quite figure this one out. Every time I try to access Oct. or Nov. 2010 on my ical, I get a spinning beach ball that lasts for 20 minutes. I have tried erasing my ical and replacing it with my MobileMe data, but it still doesn't work. Any thoughts?

Your profile says you are running 10.5.5. Are you up to date at 10.5.8?
Try reseting your sync history: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iSync/2.0/en/isc39.html
If the issue still persists follow this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627
If the issue STILL persists, export out each of your calendars one at a time using File > Export.
Add 1 new calendar to your iCal.
Import each calendar back in one at a time to a new calendar testing after each import to see if the issue persists.
Once all the calendars are re-imported you can delete the extra calendar.
    Hope that helps

Help, help, help me pleeeeeze? I have job to do before the end of the weekend... I'm getting desperate!
I got the dmg file and tried to use the Creative Cloud Installer to start my free trial, but double clicking on the installer icon only produces a DLOG that says "Initializing Installer" with an empty progress bar and "Retry" and "Cancel" buttons. Neither of which is available, as the cursor turns into a spinning beach ball immediately, and nothing happens.

Unfortunately, the fix didn't stick. When the CC app told me it needed an update last night, I downloaded the update (because it wouldn't let me run AI unless I did), opened the .dmg file. It opened the DLOG (Initiating) and then wham: spinning beach ball forever. I have already tried:
Activity Monitor & canceled the task
    Repaired permissions
    Restarted computer
    Re-downloaded the CC app
    --no good, same outcome
    so, I...
Canceled the task in the Activity Monitor
Plugged in the ethernet and turned off the WIFI (which is what fixed it, finally, the FIRST time this happened
Shut down and restarted the computer
Ran the Cleaner program [http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html] (uninstalled *every* Adobe program on my computer)
Re-downloaded the CC app and attempted install
    --no good, same outcome
Frustrated out of my mind at that point, I shut off the computer and walked away. I don't know how the hell I'm ever going to get any work done! I'm sure not convinced I should buy a subscription at this point. I think I'll have to let my trial expire and just do all my free-lance work at my daytime job! Adobe won't be making any more money from me that way.

  • Spinning Beach Ball When Trying to Login from Screensaver

This has been an ongoing problem for a couple of years on this Mac Pro, through all versions of OS X 10.4.5 or so to the current 10.4.6. I actually get the same sort of thing, without the beach ball, on my MacBook Pro when trying to bring it out of sleep mode.
Using just the Apple Computer Name screensaver (or any other), a couple of times per month, when I hit the mouse or keyboard to login, there'll be a long delay, and then the beach ball of death appears. Nothing happens after that, but if I don't touch anything, the beach ball eventually goes away, but the screensaver never comes back. Move the mouse and the beach ball comes back.
I can ssh into the system and run terminal commands, including TOP and PS, but nothing revealing in those, but admittedly, I am not sure what to be looking for.
The only way to recover the system is to hold the power key and force a reboot. Usually a sudo reboot or shutdown over ssh will kill the system, but today even that wouldn't work.
My theory is that something running has stalled and the login screen can't activate until that stall is cleared or killed, but what's frustrating is I can't figure out what's stalled, assuming that's even a correct theory. Another possibility is maybe a network share that's mounted is hanging things up for some reason.
These intermittent kinds of problems are maddening.
Is there a console log or ssh terminal command that might be revealing in this circumstance?
    Any ideas?

Wow, I'd forgotten that this thread was even open. Surprised to see responses. I forgot to subscribe to it, so I missed the recent discussions.
The link posted by dhkumd above has a post that talks about deleting some preference files via terminal. I haven't tried that yet, but it looks like I've found a similar solution (deleting a particular preference file) on my system for the time being:
I found this post on MacRumor's forums: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=541964
SOLUTION: Browse to Home>Library>Preferences and drag com.apple.systempreferences.plist to the desktop.
Caused by a corrupt user preferences file. On restart, you may find user settings have defaulted. Set up as desired.
Seems to have worked for me with short runs of screensaver enabled. I will have to see what happens overnight before I declare the problem solved. This seems a bit safer than using terminal to rm files. Dragging a copy to the desktop preserves a backup, using terminal to rm them does not.

  • Constantly get beach ball when I have more than one program open

I am get a slow machine and beach ball going when I have been using the computer for a while with a couple of programs open. I have 4MB of Ram and running 10.8.5.
Any ideas at what to look at first?
    Thanks

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mountain Lion Finder "unresponsive" (Beach balls) when trying to copy large amount of files

Before Mountain Lion, using Lion -  transfering 999 files from my compact flash card to my SSD hard drive via a FW800 reader was SO easy. Select all, drag and drop and the transfer would begin immediately.
Now, after upgrading to Mountain Lion, I experience at least 60 seconds of beach balls and an "unresponsive" finder. Sometimes it starts to transfer, sometimes I have to relaunch finder.
I've reset the PRAM (although I didn't hear 4 beeps), the SMC, I did verify and repair disk permissions.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thank you,
    (Late 2011 15 in MBP)

iomega, lacie, 500GB, 1TB, etc, seems to be drive independent. I've formatted and started over with several of the drives and same thing. If I copy the files over in smaller chunks (say, 70GB) as opposed to 600GB, the problem does not happen. It's like finder is holding on to some of the info when it puts it's "ghost" on the destination drive before it's copied over and keeping the file locked when it tries to write over it.
This may be a stretch since I have no experience with iomega and no recent experience with LaCie drives, but the different results if transfers are large or small may be a tip-off.
I ran into something similar with Seagate GoFlex drives and the problem was heat. Virtually none of these drives are ventilated properly (i.e, no fans and not much, if any, air flow) and with extended use, they get really hot and start to generate errors. Seagate's solution is to shut the drive down when not actually in use, which doesn't always play nice with Macs. Your drives may use a different technique for temperature control, or maybe none at all. Relatively small data transfers will allow the drives to recover; very large transfers won't, and to make things worse, as the drive heats up, the transfer rate will often slow down because of the errors. That can be seen if you leave Activity Monitor open and watch the transfer rate over time (a method which Seagate tech support said was worthless because Activity Monitor was unreliable and GoFlex drives had no heat problem).
If that's what's wrong, there really isn't any solution except using the smaller chunks of data which you've found works.

  • Really long spinning beach balls when trying a video chat

I just migrated from an older Mac to a brand new Mac Pro 2.66. I plugged in my iSight and tried to do a video conference, only to get a spinning beach ball for >1 minute before the video chat commenced.
Later I tried to access my own camera (by clicking on the camera button at the top of my buddy list) and likewise, >1 minute of spinning beach ball, THEN it worked OK.
Going to the Preferences > Video tab, likewise, spinning beach ball.
Any ideas on how to diagnose and fix this?
Already repaired permissions, and tried unplugging/replugging the iSight.

    Hi David,
In iChat > Preferences > Video section you should have a drop down to Pick the camera (either Internal or External).
    Have you done this ?
By default iChat will use the Firewire one as first choice (to the extent of changing mid chat if connected.

  • App store in 10.6.8 beach ball when trying to install Mountain Lion

Hi I'm trying to upgrade from 10.6.8, on my Mac book pro (early 2010) to Mountain lion.
Problem is whenever I try, via App store, the beach ball appears and the App store becomes non responsive.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Thanks baltwo. I've been on that sight before. It doesn't help.
App Store does not crash so no logs. In task view it is marked as non responsive. No other services apps etc are acting incorrectly.
I've repaired permissions and played with the password chains.
    Any other suggestions?

  • ITunes - new iMac freezes & beach balls when trying to sync iPhone 3

I have a new iMac running Lion. When I try to sync my old iPhone 3g, iTunes freezes with the dreaded spinning beach ball for ever! When I do connect the iPhone, iTunes recognizes my phone in the list, but does not ever give me the option to even erase all my old content. Stranger still - when I get tired of the beach ball spinning and disconnect the iphone, the itunes list briefly displays all my iphone content (playlists, etc.) and then goes away. We have successfully synced a very old ipod shuffle (after wiping its contents) to new Imac, so cables, etc are not the issue. we did have to de-authorize all computers to get new Imac going, perhaps a clue? I have backed up the iphone to both an old mac mini (where it still syncs flawlessly) and have migrated data to new imac so I could recover. I am willing to lose iPhone data so I can sync. I am too cheap to buy newer iphone as it still works great.
    my thoughts:
    1. erase all content on iphone and then try to sync?
    2. grumble and get new iphone?

do you guy's fix the problem?

  • Spinning Beach Ball When Trying To Capture

Upon trying to capture, using a new camcorder (Canon HV20), in the small black window where the capturing footage would appear, it is black, and in the caption area below it says
    "Waiting for timecode.
Device must be in VTR when device control is enabled.
    Press Esc to abort."
I pressed Esc and got the spinning beach ball. It's been spinning for 5 minutes or so. What do I do? Thanks.

  • Repeatedly getting "Bad Request" when trying to log into paypal...

Since the last FF update occasionally when I go to log into my Paypal account instead of reaching the log in page I get a "Bad Request" message.
If I clear my cache and cookies and then go back to the log in page everything works. But then any current sessions I was in (gmail, forums etc.) are logged out and I have to re-log in to them, very annoying.
Please tell me this problem is being addressed? When I get this "Bad Request" message I can go to safari or opera and everything is working fine, so I am fairly sure the problem here is in Firefox, not with Paypal.

Yesss.s... as you might have noted in my original question:
"If I clear my cache and cookies and then go back to the log in page everything works."
The problem is... that's only a temporary solution, the problem keeps coming back.
However I have not tried the offline storage cache clear, will try now hopefully that permanently fixes the issue.

  • Premiere Pro CC (2014 version) crashes (beach ball) when trying open certain large Projects

    Hi,
I'm currently editing for a TV channel using the latest version of Premiere Pro CC and certain projects (it seems to be with ones with a lot of footage) crash when I open it. Basically, it doesn't even load all the footage up, one that crashed just now said it had around 140 files left to load, but the beach ball arrives and I sat there waiting for half an hour and nothing happen, apart from the beach ball spinning.
Now, we're on an high spec iMac 3.5Ghz i, 32GB ram, 512gb Flash Storage, 4GB Geforce Graphics card, so I don't think the issue can be the mac, unless the macs faulty, but seems to work fine, when I create new projects etc.
Also, their workflow uses USB 3.0 drives, could this be the bottle-neck making them crash? That being said I've edited lots off my USB 3.0 drive at home and my desktop is a lot weaker then this iMac.
Any ideas what the issue may be?
    Thank you,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
Please mention the exact version of Premiere Pro. Assuming you are using 2014 version, please try some steps mentioned below.
    1. Clean the media cache files by navigating to /Users/User Name/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common
    2. Check the version of the drivers of your NVidia card. So, go to Apple Menu>System Preferences and check if you have a CUDA Preference pane if it is not there then go to the below link and update the Card to latest drivers.
CUDA Drivers for MAC Archive | NVIDIA
    3. Also, please mention if you have any third party plugins used in the project. If yes, then try to update those Plugins or copy and paste those plugins to some other location and Trash them from MediaCore of Premiere Pro. The location of third party plugins is mentioned below.
Startup Drive or MAC HD /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0
    Hope it helps.
    Regards,
    Vinay
