Get files from PowerMac G3 to External Drive

My uncle has an old G3 with a lot of photos and most of a book he has written. We need to get that information off the old G3 and onto an external drive. The G3 is running 8.5 and has two firewire ports, but when I connect my external LaCie Rugged drive, it doesn't seem to recognize it. I can't remember much about getting around in 8.5, so I'm not sure where to start to move the files. It has a CD/ROM drive, but it's not a writable drive and the USB ports are only 1.1, so none of my external USB devices work either. I also tried connecting with ethernet, but no joy there because my MB Pro doesn't see it and it doesn't see my MB Pro. I turned on file sharing on both machines, but I'm sure I'm missing something with the old Mac. Target disk mode isn't an option since it's not supported pre OS 9. Any suggestions?
Oh, and while I'm at it, how high can I upgrade the OS? The machine runs perfectly, but it's way out of date. It's got 10 gb's of free space on the hard drive and is a PPC 2.33 ghz processor.

You could temporarily remove the G3's hard drive from the computer and use an adapter like this one, for connection to your MacBook via USB 2.0. Assuming that you have adequate hard drive capacity for transferring the files to the MacBook, you could then burn them to CDs/DVDs or to a USB flash drive. I upgraded my beige G3s with larger hard drives, more memory, CD burners, FireWire, and USB 1.1 ports, and a better graphics card, but I wouldn't recommend doing that today with a 11 year-old computer. If your uncle wants to keep using it, I'd suggest downloading/running the OS 8.6 Update (updates OS 8.5/8.5.1 to 8.6). If a beige G3 has adequate installed memory and hard drive space, it's officially supported up to Jaguar (OS 10.2.x), or to Panther (10.3.x) with the assistance of the downloadable "XPostFacto".

  • How to I move my music files from FAT32 to HFS  external drive

    Hi-
I am using iTunes 11.0.1 in OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on an early 2008 MacBook. I followed instructions at
iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
It worked fine and now my ~120 GB of music (and ~20 GB of video) is on an external drive "Tardis" and iTunes works well. The only data on "Tardis" is my Apple-named iTunes media folders/files inside a folder called "iTunes." My iTunes library files are on my MacBook and being backed up (along with other personal data) by Time Machine to another external HD "Rivendell."
Unfortunately I did not realize "Tardis" was still formatted as FAT32 and I cannot include it in my Time Machine backups. I want to move my music files to an HFS+ drive so that Time Machine will back them up.
I am keen on keeping all the metadata associated with my music files, as I've spent a lot of time organizing and tweaking, and want the play statistics also. There is a lot of classical as well as rock/pop/alternative and a smattering of jazz.
Is there an easy way to get my music to an HFS+ drive? I did find a possible method here:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/9690221#9690221Re: How to move my iTunes library from an external FAT32 drive
This says to get a new HFS+ drive, then use equivalent of http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449 to consolidate to new drive.
I can do this, however it took iTunes ~12 hours to "consolidate" my files from internal HD to external FAT32 drive "Tardis". Now I would be going from one USB 2 drive to another USB 2 drive. Is there a faster way?
    Is it possible to:
get a new drive and format as HFS+
copy everything over from FAT32 "Tardis" to new HFS+ drive (using "finder"), keeping the entire file structure
    disconnect "Tardis"
    rename new drive to "Tardis"
open iTunes and have things work
Seems to me copying is much quicker than "consolidating". I've done both recently.
If the drag-copy method causes me to lose metadata, then it will not work and I have to use the long consolidate process.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Possibly,
You will need some data recovery software, it will cost $100 approximately, I can recommend Data Rescue by Prosoft.
Until you get that eject the drive and leave it that way until you are ready to try and recover your files.
Then start using a backup system, this could have been avoided for less money than the software will cost.

  • Restoring files from Time Machine to external drive

I keep my iPhoto library -- aning may other files -- on an external drive (iomega 1 TB).   I use Time Machine (Time Capsule) for my back-ups of iphoto - and all my files on this drive.  The external drive is failing.  I have bought an new external drive and wish to restore my iPhoto library to this new drive.  The steps for restoring from Time Machine require me to click on the iPhoto library and then enter time machine.  I cannot do this as the folder is now unreadable on the drive and I do not wish to restore it to this old drive in any event.
I have accessed the time machine drive and can see the iphoto back up is there.
    What is my next step?
    Robert

You are correct Linc.  I am probably not being clear enough.  The dead drive is disconnected and I am only using the new external drive, the iMac and the Time Machine backup drive which is connected to the iMac via ethernet.
I am trying to what you have suggested and appears all over the internet as the correct method.  Unfortuntely, it is just not working.  I will take snapshots of the screens to illustrate.  (not sure how to take sceenshots in Time Machine.)
While in finder I have the sidebar.  I choose my iMac and choose enter Time Machine (Home Drive is the new external drive):
Just before I enter -- a window opens that says "connecting to back-up volume":
Then another window opens -- on it's own -- that is the Time Machine Back-up and it does not have the sidebar:
As I slide into Time Machine another window opens -- on its own -- that contains the elements of my sidebar:
As show below in another screen grab:
And now I am in Time Machine with that window -- i have even tried to click on the sidebar window which lies in the background just prior to sliding into Time Machine but I still get this window):
No side bar.  But, I can choose any back-up window behind it it -- going back in time -- and get windows that looks like this:
Via the bottom status bar I can manuever to the correct back-up date and time i want and get this window:
The Iomega HDD contains the back-up of iPhoto Library (and other files) thart I wish to restore.  I should be able to open this folder.  Choose the files to restore and voila.  But when I choose the foloder.  Nothing.  It freezes -- except i can still manuever the mouse.  No spinning wheel.  Nothing.  I cannot exit Time Machine etc.  I end up shutting down using the power button.
BTW. Here is the wiondow I get when I click on the Time Machine drive in the sidebar:
I can choose the iPhoto Library and I dragged and dropped to the new drive.  There was an error the first try (after 4 hours...) but the second try worked.  I have duplicated/backed-up the library getting ready to experiment with an new iPhoto upgrade.
    Is this the same library?
But any thoughts on what happened during the Time Machine process is appreciated.

  • Moving files from iMac to an external drive

I have a 250 gb iMac and a 1 tB external drive (Seagate). My iMac is getting quite full, so I tried moving some files to my external. It told me that I couldn't because these files needed OS X to operate. How can I move files to my external so I can clear up my iMac drive?

    Greetings,
Is the drive you are moving files to the drive you use for your Time Machine backup? If so, don't do this. Any files you put on that drive are not backed up by Time Machine (Time Machine cannot backup it's own drive. That would be like performing brain surgery on yourself.) If you are running out of space, get an additional external drive to store them on so that they can still be backed up by Time Machine.
Here are some general ideas on how to free up space: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8358.html
The most common items that people tend to have that use up all their space are iTunes (Music/Movies), iPhoto (Pictures), and iMovie (Movies).
You can move all 3 of these to an external hard drive if you like. Again, do not use your Time Machine backup drive for this purpose. That is for making a backup copy, not for holding the originals.
Once you have another drive you can move the afore mentioned large items if they are indeed taking up a large amount of space.
    iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
    iPhoto: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229
    iMovie: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19555.html
    Hope that helps.

  • Getting files bigger than 4GB onto external drive for itunes

Im woundering if anyone can help me ?
I have recently purchased a 2012 mini mac and wanted to transfer my itunes from my pc to the new mac.
After several attempts at doing this i found it easier to start afresh due to my external hdd that i was using on the pc not being large enough.
I have now reached one small problem ,after puchasing a 2Tb hdd then being told to re-formatt it to fat32 i cannot download any hd movies
as they are larger than 4GB.
I am now lead to believe it needs to be formatted to Mac OS Extended(journaled).
So i have now copied my itunes complete folder to the mac temporary so i can wipe the hdd
Only problem now is when i try to re-formatt the hdd it gives me an error message saying it carnt do this .
Can anyone please help me or do i noe hae to buy a new hdd
its a seagate expansion if that helps.
    thanks for any help
    Mark

If this drive is only ever going to be used with a Mac,
you should actually repartition the drive to be a GUID
partition table with Mac OSX extended journaled format.
It probably will not let you format OSX because because its
partitioning table is MBR (Master Boot Record) which is
    used with PCs.
If you want to use with both Macs and PCs, recreate the
partition table as MBR with the file format as ExFAT instead
    of FAT32.

  • How do I Move Events from an Internal to External drive?

    Hello,
I am trying to move events on my internal drive to my new external drive. Everything is set up and I see the external drive, but after reading other posts and replies it seems I can't just move the files from the internal to external drive by dragging and dropping using finder.
Can anyone give some guidance on how I do this so i don't have to reload all my videos on the external drive.
Also, when they are moved over, will i see the external drive when I open iMovie, or do I ahve to do something to see it in my Events Library.
    Any help be be appreciated.

Can anyone give some guidance on how I do this so i don't have to reload all my videos on the external drive.
Best approach is to import files directly to the external drive during the initial import process by selecting the appropriate drive in the import window. However, for Events already stores, here is A QUICKIE VIDEO TUTORIAL.
Also, when they are moved over, will i see the external drive when I open iMovie, or do I ahve to do something to see it in my Events Library.
You must activate the "external drive" icon in iMovie '08 to make your external drives visible in the Event Library list. (I.e. Press the icon to the right of the "Event Library" title and to the left of the actual Event Window.) Sorry, answered your e-mail message before seeing the second question here.

Hopefully you moved the entire iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder to a new path on your external drive. Copy your iTunes library folder out to the root of the external drive, e.g. X:\iTunes (where X: is your external drive), then move the media folder inside it. Hold down shift as you start iTUnes and keep holding untila asked to choose or create a library. Choose the library at X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. Should all be good.
Failing that, download and run my FindTracks script and point it at the new location of your media folder.

  • Itunes is copying/converting 500gb of music from .wma to .m4a files that are on an external drive onto my laptop which doesnt have enough room. how do i reroute these newly converted files somewhere with enough space for them?

itunes is copying/converting 500gb of music from .wma to .m4a files that are on an external drive onto my laptop which doesnt have enough room. how do i reroute these newly converted files somewhere with enough space for them?
new to itunes, used windows media player before that and always ripped music directly to an external hardrive and accessed it through the player. now that i downloaded itunes it is taking from the external hardrive and copying a second file for each song onto my lap top hard drive which does not have the capacity for all my music. as itunes converts music files i want them saved back onto my external drive or another location i have space for rather than the lap top. how do i change the setting to move the itunes media folder to another location. assuming that hitting copy and past and dropping it in a random location will cause a few errors.

When I have done this, all I did was network the two machines and copy the contents of the iTunes folder to the other machine, and that's it.
My understanding (which may not be 100% correct) is that the one file that is absolutely necessary is iTunes Library, and that the XML file is actually a copy auto-generated from the iTunes Library, appearing in a different format only for non-iTunes apps that take advantage of the iTunes Library data.
As far as I know, if you simply have the Library (database) file and all your original music files, iTunes on that computer should operate as it did on your old computer. I believe that the Album Artwork, Genius Data, and XML files can be regenerated from the Library file. Not sure about the Extras file.

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into
    Carbon Copy Cloner.

I am viewing your question from different perspective, that is, the issue that you face when you are ripping VOBs from a second DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc using Premiere Elements,
It is best to give the Premiere Elements version and computer operating system that it is running on. In the absence of that, I will generalize.
    Assuming that you are using
    Premiere Elements 12
    Add Media
    "DVD Camera or Computer Drive"
    Video Importer
Typically the Video Importer Save In: is C:\Users\Owner\Videos
Each of your DVD discs is going to have the same names for the ripped VOBs (VTS_01_1.VOB and so on depending on the duration of the movie). Consequently, after the ripping of the first DVD's VOBs and their save to Videos, you will end up with that "files already existing..." block for the ripping of the VOBs from the second DVD.
The answer is, for each DVD disc VOB ripping, to plan ahead and create and set for different folders in Videos in the Save In field of the Video Importer.
Please review and then let us know if that works for you. Please do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
    Thank you.

  • Deleting files permanently through LightRoom on external drive

My LR files are stored on an external drive and the drive is called Buffalo NAS and it has a "trashbox" for deleted files.  My IT says I should clean out the trashbox using LR and I can not figure out how to do this.  I do not want deleted files eating up hard drive space on the external.  This forum as been great for answering my other questions and I thank all in advance who might help with this.

    Hi JWT
LR only manages the folders you have selected for import and development (editing).
If you want to use LR to delete “managed” folders it’s possible to select them in the Library (Folders tab) and then remove and optionally delete from your hard drive or NAS.

There is a serious known issue with Premiere Elements 10 on a computer that uses a NVIDIA GeForce video card/graphics card. The answer to date has been to roll back
the driver version to about May 2013. There is an Announcement at the top of this forum about all this, and much more information to be found elsewhere
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE10: NVIDIA Video Card Driver Roll Back
I am not sure if an automatic update of the driver version may have taken the driver version from the much older date to current version which is triggering your present situation.
I am strictly an Elements Windows user so I am not sure if the following NVIDIA GeForce 9400 M driver version would work in your Mac computer environment.
GeForce 320.49 May 23, 2013. The following is the NVIDIA GeForce 9400 M but listed on Windows
NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search
The other consideration is the use of Premiere Elements 10 OS10.10.2. I have not seen any reports confirming that Premiere Elements 10 is compatible with OS 10.10.2.
But then again, you report "It worked well 3 months ago. First time it has done it." Where you using the same operating system then as now?
You can also factor into all this the usual drill considerations...
    a. Are you working with a pen and tablet device instead of mouse?
    b. Does the problem exist with antivirus and firewall(s) disabled?
    c. Have you deleted the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file
    Users/Owner/Libraries/Application Support/Adobe/Premiere Elements/10.0
    d. Is the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer?
Please review and consider and then we can discuss this further.
Thank you for the follow up.
