Get info box

itunes won't let me alter info in 'get info' box or insert artwork, any ideas?

This usually happens when the files are marked as read only. Right click and use Show in Windows Explorer, then check the file properties there...

I've cleared almost 30 gig off of my hard drive in the past 2 weeks, and it will temporarily show that in the Get Info box.  But hours later, I am still getting a disk full error and all of the memory has disappeared.  I have cleared my backup logs from Time Machine, checked the mail folder, cleaned out tons of photos and videos and it still keeps filling back up.
In checking the log files, here is the message repeated over and over....

Any ideas on what to do next?
    I'm running and iMac 20-inch  early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Step 1
Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Why can't I edit in the Get Info boxes?

I have just recently done a re and re on my laptop and gone to Windows 8. I have transfered over my music to iTunes, but now I can't edit any information in the Get Info boxes as they are all grayed out. Can someone help me with this, please?
    Thanks

  • I need to open Firefox (7.0.1) in 32-bit mode, and the Get Info box does have this option.

I have downloaded a piece of software (Scorch) that requires me to open Firefox (I'm running 7.0.1) in 32-bit mode. The Get Info box on my Firefox does not have this option. My computer is a MacBook running OSX 10.5.8.
There is some time urgency on this! What can I do?

usually is a check box over the locked box:

do you have it in safari?

  • Keyboard shortcuts and tabs with get info box

I'm having several problems with the new get info box - and regret that I can no longer bring up the old version with the shift/right-click/get-info command.
    1) No keyboard shortcut to advance from one track to the next, from inside the Get Info box. This used to be handled with Alt-N or Alt-P for Next and Previous. Now it seems to require mouse click on the error.
    2) When tabbing through fields, it skips fields toward the bottom (album artist)
    3) For works with the same title (most of my library is classical), I've tended to organize them by adding an extra space at the end of the Album line for the 2nd work with that title, or an extra two spaces for the 3rd work with that same title. This way they sort as distinct albums, since most works have multiple tracks. With the new Get Info, if I enter that extra space on the field in the box, it cuts it off when clicking ok. But if I just F2 the field on itunes list view, I can add it with no problem. This is a pain because I have to do it one track at a time, can't do it for multiple tracks at once.

The functions printed in small letters on those keys are accessed by the fn key.
The following work on my MBP (albeit using Word 2008, but IIRC the same shortcuts worked in Word 2004):
Jump to start of document = Command-Fn-LeftArrow (aka Command-Home)
Jump to end of document = Command-Fn-RightArrow (aka Command-End)
    Likewise,
Jump to start of line = Fn-LeftArrow
Jump to end of line = Fn-RightArrow
    Page Up = Fn-UpArrow
    Page Down = Fn-DownArrow
In this one (exceedingly rare) instance, Niel is incorrect.

  • "Unknown" User Showing in Get Info Box

This is strange - at the bottom of any Get Info screen I am seeing three listings in this order:
1 - administrator (my account) with Read/Write privileges
    2 - (unknown) - Read Only
    3 - everyone - Read Only
When I try to delete unknown, nothing happens
    Any thoughts?

The first time I installed leopard I lost the root account and it lowered my priviledges on my admin account to user.
That was only the beginning of sorrows and I finally restored Tiger again.
Second attempt - same result almost.
    Back to tiger - Grrrrr.....
On the next attempt I did the usual (disk and permission repair) before install, but this time I forced Leopard to boot into safe mode immediately following the install from the DVD.
Eureka! Every setting from Tiger was perfectly preserved, except for one: my windows workgroup name. I finally cured that by deleting the ethernet -1 entry in system preferences > network and then recreating it.
The Remote management 3.2.1 upgrade caused me numerous program and stability problems as well. I finally removed it and altogether and leopard performed much better. I later reinstalled the original remote management client 3.2 from the leopard disk and leopard finally tamed down and went to work.
It has that "good time feeling" now and my million and one settings from tiger are all perfectly preserved.

  • ITunes 11 Get Info box lost "Next" & "Previous" buttons.

Without reverting to the previous version — how would I do that? — can I get back these features which were integral to my mode of editing track information?

While this does solved this problem, I do not understand dat Apple is blind to this issue. This is really not user friendly behaviour and not well thought through by the Apple designer(s).

  • Checking/unchecking a box in "get info" with Applescript

I've never used Applescript or automator but I think one of them could help me. I need to run Photoshop CS3 normally most of the time but when I have to scan I have to run it in Rosetta. To do this I get the "get info" box up for CS3 and check or uncheck the "open using rosetta" checkbox. The problem is I have to plough throgh several folders to get to the CS3 application and I was hoping I could get applescript or automator to do this with one click. Can anyone tell me what I would have to type into Applescript or how I would automate this?
    Thanks for any help.

    Replace ...
    HD1_160:Applications:Safari.app
... (the path to 'Safari', on this Macintosh) in ...
tell application "Finder" to set current panel of (open information window of file ("HD1_160:Applications:Safari.app")) to General Information panel
... with the full path to CS3.
You can save the code (via 'Script Editor's 'File, Save' menu item) ...
    01. As an 'Application' (via the 'File Format:' popup menu).
    02. As a script (in the current users '$HOME/Library/Scripts/' folder; or, elsewhere, with an alias of it - in the '$HOME/Library/Scripts/' folder); and, access it (the script) via the 'Script Menu' (which is added to the menu bar via 'AppleScript Utility.app' in the '/Applications/AppleScript/' folder).

I just did it to 50 photos and 50 Get Info boxes came up. Pain in the ***. Does anyone know how to put it back to 10 or more, one info box.
    Thanks

Press the Control key and choose Get Summary Info, or the Option key and choose Show Inspector.

  • IPTC Metadata not appearing in 'Get Info' - exported JPG?

I've just exported a bunch of images (versions) from Aperture to JPG.  I have selected 'Include Metadata' and yet when I open the image and select 'Get Info' the only info being displayed is the info of least importance (to me, with these images), such as device name, colour space, focal length etc etc.  None of the IMPORTANT information such as copyright and author etc are there??  I would expect / hope this info to be embedded so that anyone viewing on either a PC or Mac would see it, not exposure and device related information which is the last thing I'm worried about them getting.
If I drag the image back into Aperture all the relevant info is there but the vast majority of people are not going to be opening JPGs they get supplied with in programmes like Aperture. At best you might expect them to use 'Properties' or 'Get Info' on a Mac.
Am I doing something wrong or is this another 'Feature' of ML???  If it is a 'feature' is there a way to actually have Aperture append USEFUL metadata information to JPGs on export, such trivial matters as copyright and terms of use etc.?

I just tried Preview (which being mostly full time on Aperture I've never used beyond a quick look at an image on the desktop), the info is there, so that's good to know. But you still have to dig for it.  My preference would be to get something up in the basic tools such as Get Info.  Previously, I'm sure I've had JPGs where the info has shown up in Get Info, how long back I don't know.  But my memory MAY be playing tricks.
I am actually relcutant to trash Aperture due to it's management capabilities and it suits for the limited amount of adjustments I ever do, relying on Nik Software for the rest.  BUT I may consider it if there is another application that does write the IPTC data in a way Get Info can read it.    I'd hope to have copyright info flag up on any machine's 'quick look' application, be it Get Info on OS X or Properties on a Windows (I'll look later what comes up there, I rarely if ever use the Windows machine now).  Maybe it's just impossible.   I'm reluctant to add different applications to the workflow to achieve this, meta /exif tools etc.  It's more to do, more things to keep updated, more things to break as OS X evolves etc etc.
in the meantime I have played with various fields in the IPTC data block and oddly, if I put the Copright - 'all rights reserved' text in the 'Instructions' it DOES show up in the 'Get Info' box and the 'Instructions' field is perhaps not too out of place to be seen displaying the copyright text and for me is preferable to editing such items as 'Device Info' to display copyright, which looks really odd and, IIRC, requires and EXIF adit tool. The 'Provider' field may be MORE appropriate but again, Get Info doesn't display entries in that field.  Of course it means that anything that WILL display IPTC data correctly will have the copyright info twice, but I'd rather opt for that AND have copyright correctly displayed in Get Info.  I'll check later if it displays using Windows 'Properties'.

  • Can I change where on the screen the "get info" display pops up?

Can I change where on the screen the "get info" display pops up? I have dual 23" cinema displays and the Get Info box always pops up inconveniently on the far, far left. Is there a way to change the default location, more towards the middle, where it would fit better into my work flow?

    treetopstudio,
I'm not sure to change the default of Get Info but what you could do is open the Inspector instead it 1 remembers it location when you close it and 2 when you click on another icon in finder changes to that. To open it instead of the get info window Option + Command + i or hold Option and click File show Inspector.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

  • Get Info Is Blank

    Hello,
I'm posting this question because I want to help my girlfriend out here. Anyways on her computer in iTunes the get info box no longer works. Basically you right click on a song and choose "Get Info" and the box appears completely blank except for "previous," "next," "ok," and "cancel" buttons. She is running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit with the correct/latest version of iTunes installed. This problem has persisted through one iTunes update and I for the life of me can't solve it. I've made sure all the files and folders for her music are not set to "Read Only", I've tried running a repair install of iTunes but no dice. Any and all help is much appreciated. If you need more tech details please ask. I realize to I should mention that this problem seems to be system wide; such as windows media player won't let you access the options menu or the individual song options menu. I realize that this is an iTunes forum but just thought that might mean something is wrong on a grander system scale.
    Thanks
    Vincent/Anna

I seem to remember somebody else posting about that, the entire page being blank except for the buttons.
Sorry I can't remember the resolution, but that suggests display settings or maybe reinstalling the video drivers.

  • Right click get info menu missing in new itunes store

Before the update if i couldn't get the album artwork for an album i had imported from a CD i would find album and one of its tracks on the store, right click it and select "get info". I would then see a dialogue box containing the pertinent information about the song such as title, artist name, composer, album artist, year, track number. If i then copied this information into the "get info" box of the song in my itunes library and tried to get the album artwork again, more often than not it worked.
now when i load up the itunes store and find the song i want to check the tags for i can no longer right click on it to get the information, i can only left click it to play a sample.
is it possible to access the "get info" information in the store anymore, if not does anyone have any good suggestions for fixing the tags on songs so that itunes recognises them and will download artwork for them and recognise them for genius.
    thanks
    Matt

I havent tried it yet, but a partial solution appears to be downgrading.
this will at least get the functionality back,

  • Launch App and "get info" comes up?

Hi! Wierd stuff sometimes just happens. I tried to launch disk utility and the "get info" box for disk utility came up. Then I tried to double click on the icon of any of my volumes and drives and nothing happens. Nothing would launch. By now I'm freakin' out so I try a restart and it boots into "safe boot" and the screen color is washed out so I restart from a backup since I can't repair permissions because I can't get to disk utility. I repair disk and restart but the screen is still washed out so I restart from another volume and run DiskWarrior on the boot drive and then restart.....ALL IS WELL!! Thanks Diskwarrior!

    Disk Warrior saves the day!

  • Get Info shortcut changed?

I don't know why, but I've just noticed that the keyboard shortcut for changing tabs while editing in the Get Info box for a song (and for changing tabs in the Preferences panel as well) seems to have changed from CMD-[ and CMD-] to now requiring Shift-CMD-[ and Shift-CMD-].
Can someone confirm this is new in iTunes, and not something on my system? Why in the world would Apple add this needless additional finger for such a nice shortcut? Ugh.

Do you mean left and right brackets (I think the built in HTML editor messed up your post)?
Yes, to confirm what you said, help topic still says Command Left Bracket and Command Right Bracket but in use I too found it has to be SHIFT-Command Left/Right Bracket.
