"Get Info": Duplicate entries (artists, albums, genres)

As the title states, these have been occurring in my iPhone 4. Mass selected songs from the same album/artist and editied them in both Windows Explorer and iTunes. No effects. Mark songs in an album as "part of a compilation". No success either. What now?
Also, some genres appear to me as numbers instead of what the actual genre's supposed to be in iTunes and Windoes Explorer.
e.g. "132" in my iPhone's iPod instead of "UK Hardcore"

Now, I have to go figure out why I would ever want the Compilations box checked!
The main reason is if you have an actual compilation album such as Now, I Wish I Wish This Was Real Music, you do not have a bunch of artists with only one songs and no album of their own listed under Artists.
This helps to keep Artists uncluttered.

  • I don't see Artist,album,genre when i download

Thanks for any help with this problem. i just downloaded a cd that has MP3's on it to itunes. The problem is that i don't see, name of album, artist, or the genre listed for any of the mp3's on that cd. And itunes did not recognize any of them either. Is there a way to manally put this info in itunes. i went to "get info" and a box came up for each song. But there was no way to highlight it and put in the info. thanks

If there is no way to highlight it, sounds like your iTunes folder is set for read-only.
Go into Win Explorer, right-click properties on the iTUnes folder, and make sure the read only box isn't checked.

  • V8.0: How to remove the Store arrows next to Artist, Album, Genre etc.?

    Hello,
Since upgrading to iTunes 8, I can no longer find the setting to remove the arrows next to the song name, artist, album and genre. I don't like it in my library as it takes up space and creates clutter while I'm browsing though.
If you don't know what I mean, then see this: http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596100360/figs/d1e733-web.jpeg "Little gray arrows"

  • How to get iTunes to update artist/album folder names after editing file metadata

If I edit the metadata for a song, such as the song title, it updates the actual file on my computer as well. However, if I edit the album name or artist name, it does not update the artist or album folders. Is there a way to force iTunes to do this? I have music coming from 3 different sources, Amazon, iTunes, and CD rips, and it's very common for artist names to appear differently from different sources. I'd like to be able to just add everything to iTunes, update any inconsistencies, and then have those changes automaticaly be reflected in my \iTunes Media\Music folder. Is that possible? Otherwise I end up with multiple folders for the same artist.

Check the option to Keep iTunes Media organized under Edit > Preferences > Advanced.  The Copy files to iTunes Media folder option should also be checked if you want to make sure that all media is stored under the iTunes Media folders.

  • How do I save changes to album info in "Get Info?"

I know this has been asked before, but I haven't found any answers related to recent versions of iTunes.
Running latest version on Windows 7.  When I make changes to fields in the "Get Info" screen on an album, the changes don't save -- when I go to "Get Info" again, they are gone.
Any hints on how to solve this?
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Set the Energy Saver preferences the way you want them.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Check the settings while in safe mode. Have they been reverted? If so, set them again. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Get Info for Multiple Albums message (but only one was selected)

Please can someone help? I was so full of hope when moving from Windows to the Mac but my hope is rapidly turning to despair.
I have spent several hours putting many of my favourite music CDs into iTunes. All was going well, but suddenly when accessing the “Get Info” of a particular album in order to add Artwork I got a message like “Are you sure you want to get the information of MULTIPLE items” (my emphasis). (The error message may not be word perfect because I clicked the “don't show again” box and haven't seen it since.)
But the point is that I definitely did NOT have multiple items selected. There is nothing I can now do to select “Get Info” for a single album, and as a consequence I will never be able to add Artwork again when necessary.
I looked through the Internet and found references to the com.apple.itunes.plist. However although I can see this using Terminal I cannot find it using Finder! (Why not?)
What on earth is going on? This is no better than Windows, and in fact rather worse: I tried to delete iTunes, since it is obviously corrupted in some obscure way, with a view to re-installing it. But I can't even do that because it is “needed by Mac Os x”!!
    Please can you help?

If you get info on an album, it contssts of multiple songs so it is multiple items.

You still can get info for multiple items. Checking the Don't show this again box simply stops iTunes from telling you that you have selected multiple items. It will still get info and edit the info for multiple items.

Because by default, Finder searches do not show system files.
But the "problems" you are experiencing are not really problems (just not knowing how it works) and you don't need to mess with that file.

  • Shuffling When Playing in Artist, Song, Genre or Album Mode

Is there any way to shuffle songs when playing from the Artist, Song, Genre or Album modes? Or does shuffle only apply to playlists?
    Thanks for the help?

Make sure your shuffle setting is set to songs. Then select any artist/album/genre, hit play and the songs within that category are shuffled.
For instance, set shuffle to songs, select artist, select (say) The Beatles, select all, press play and all The Beatles songs are shuffled.

  • "get info" when you upload a CD - what does it mean "part of a compilation"?

"get info" when  you upload a CD - what does it mean "part of a compilation"?

If you have an album with tracks by different artists, for instance "Now That's What I Call Running", that's a Compilation of songs by different artists. (Presumably, they ran out of numbers )
So in iTunes, each track should be marked as Part of a compilation. When you see that box on a CD loaded in your CD drive, ready for importing, look at the Get Info for the complete album (by highlighting the album title on the left under Devices) and on there you will see a tick-box named Compilation CD which - if ticked - marks all the tracks as Part of a compilation. This becomes useful when the iPod and iTunes sort the album.
However - iTunes obtains the album information from a third-party database called Gracenote, which is compiled by the record label personel, artists and fans. Quiet often, you will find that an album of "Greatest Hits of <a band>" will be marked as a compilation. I don't think it is, and neither does iTunes. So if you are importing a "Greatest Hits of xxx artist" album, make sure that the Compilation box is off (no tick-in-the-box). Likewise, an album by "an artist", but with a guest artist on one or two tracks is not a compilation.
One final point; if you import a true Compilation album, with each track by a different artist, then once it is imported, make sure that the Album Artist field says "Various Artists". You do this by highlighting the complete album in your library and selecting File/Get Info/Info>Album Artist which is the box immediately below the Artist box and typing in "Various Artists". This will help you when sorting and searching albums on your iPod.

  • Petition : View by (artist/album/etc) option for playli

the songs in my player are of two languages, so I have two playlists for songs of each language. Each of these playlists consists of thousands of songs. So selecting specific songs while playing any playlist becomes a big headache, since I cant search the playlist according to artist or album.
I would love to have the 'view by' functionality for playlists also, something that can make big playlists look like libraries.
So, if u ppl agree with me please sign!

I am talking about the player not the software.
Saving different libraries definitely comes handy if ur collection contains songs of multiple languages, and u want to organise them separately. By giving playlists the option of viewing by artist/album/genre, ur basically turning the playlists into libraries.

  • Need to edit erroneous entries in iTunes Info autofill lists (artist, genre)

Bad entries in iTunes appear (autofill feature) when i am filling in artist, composer, genre, etc.  Need to correct and clear out these bad entries.
    TIA for all your help.
    Regards,
    Allan.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You may need to set the track number, and sort by that, since these are not in alphabetical order.
Right click where it says Name in iTunes (on top of the song list). Put a check mark next to/click Track Number. See if the other songs have track numbers. They may be sorted by that. If so, you'd have to add track numbers to all those other tracks, and then sort by that (right click a song, go to get info, click the info tab, and add the track number).
If it's not track number, try and find out what they are being sorted by.

  • I just moved my Itunes content to a computer with Win 7. I can only get "songs" in list view. How do I correct this so I can see Artist and Genre also in list view. The box to show all list in list view is checked but it only shows album view

I just moved all my itunes content to a windows 7 computer. I can only get "songs" in list view. Genre and Artist show as Album views. The box in preferences is checked so that all lists should show as list. How can I get a list view for Artists and Genre also?

Only when i go to a different browser (like IE) after i clear it , then all that shows up is the pages i visited in IE , that is what bugs me , why is IE browsing history sowing up in Firefox ??
Basically , i can clear the history in Firefox , and then for a example , go to Craigslist , using IE7 (launching it from a complete different Icon , in other words at that time i never open Firefox) , then after closing out , or even leaving open as it does not seem to matter , i go into Firefox , and hit History , and there is every place i visited in IE7 , on my History in Firefox

  • How do I show album artist in get info?

I have an audiobook that is split into two files, Part 1 and Part 2. One of these files shows the album artist in the Details panel of Get Info, while the other doesn't. Apart from having different chapter names, these files appear identical in Get Info. The problem is that they now have different album artists, and therefore, don't combine as a single album in iTunes. I need to change the inaccessible Album Artist info to match the one I can access. Does anyone know how to do this?
    Paul.

Thank you very much, hhgttg27. A succinct and correct answer. I have made the changes as you suggested and I now have a single book/album with two parts instead of two separate part-books.
One thing puzzles me, though. This latest version of iTunes now has a Narrator field in the Details page, but I cannot put anything into it. Weird!...
    Paul.

  • "Get Info" Issues when updating music without prefilled artist name, album name, etc

Hi there, trying to change track information such as artist, album name etc...when i do this, it allows me to change it on the get info tab, but then when i save it, it doesn't actually save and reverts back to no info and then in itunes, i cant sort by artist. it only has the track names way at the bottom with the track numbers and they are all mixed up with other like tracks...also, when i add a complete album, i cant actually change individual tracks at all under the get info tab. i have to select all of those tracks on that album under the recently added tab and then attempt to change them. when i do the individual tracks, it is not changeable at all. please help!

  • I can no longer change my song names like i used to. i use to be able to right click and go to "get info" and then change the song name, artist and album, now i can't is there any other way to change the songs name and info

When I get songs and put them on my itunes accout on my computer I used to be able to rename them right clicking, going to "get info" and then renaming everything I wanted like song name, album and artwork. I also use to be able to click on the song then click and hold on it and be able to rename it. But all the songs I have gotten after the last update have not been able to be renamed in any of the old ways I use to be able to. Is there any other way to rename songs because I know I can't undo updates and that seems to be whats causing it.
    Thankyou for your time

You are describing an iTunes problem, not an iPod touch problem. Try posing in the iTunes forum.

  • Duplicate Cover Flow on "Various Artists" Albums

Hi. I know this has been asked a thousand times, I did do a Search and found a solution but it doesnt seem to want to work for me.
The way I thought you were supposed to fix this problem is to Open iTunes, Select Every Song on the Album, Get Info, Type a Name in the Album Artist Field, Select Compilation, Hit OK.
When I do this, iTunes "processes" the songs but then nothing happens. If I go back to Get Info, it doesnt save anything I typed in.
Any ideas?? Do I not have the right privlidges? (Im supposed to be Admin) ... Is it a setting in iTunes?? I'm lost, and the duplicate cover flow is sooooooooo annoying!! Plz help!!

I think it is a good idea to start a backup strategy since it is not a matter of "if" but "when" your internal drive will have problems. Sometimes it can be costly not only in terms of time but also money to buy software that may or may not recover your internal drive. If you have to buy $200 worth of software to recover your drive you may as well have bought a decent backup drive in the first place. However, you already have that drive. Is your iMac a newer Intel model? If so, and if your drive is USB then I believe you can boot your Mac from that, otherwise you need a Firewire drive.
This is starting to get outside my area of expertise since I just have Tiger on an older PPC, and the capabilities and requirements of newer intel Macs and Leopard will change your backup strategy parameters. Depending upon the size of your internal drive and other factors you might end up wanting to partition your external into one general backup partition which is the same size as your internal drive, and a second partition for extra data storage. However, you should never have important data only on one drive and the problem with the aforementioned strategy is you don't have a backup for the data you have on that second partition on your external drive should the external drive fail! When I expand I always buy two drives so I can have backup for the extra data. The exception is where I have backups on CDs or DVDs. For example, my CDs on my internal drive are already "backed up" in the form of the original CDs in my collection.
I know this is going beyond your initial question but you should think about it. You might also want to read and/or post in the Leopard or iMac forum about a good strategy for backing up your computer.
