Get Info file ownership

I have noticed that when I send a file to another computer get Info lists the Read & Write priveleges as belonging to a name I do not recognise. Is this normal? Should it not give my name?

The ownership is based on User ID, not the name. So, if your UID matches another user's UID on the other Mac, it will show up as that.

    iTunes offers Sound Check for volume normalization.
    The results for the Sound Check analysis are displayed in the File tab of the Get Info dialog under Volume.
    So far so good.
    When I edit the ITunNORM tag with an external application (e.g. https://www.beatunes.com/en/itunes-replay-gain.html or http://www.mani.de/en/ivolume/https://www.beatunes.com/en/itunes-replay-gain.html), the results are displayed in iTunes under Get Info -> File -> Volume.
    But no matter how I edit the tags and whatever iTunes shows as "Volume" (not Volume Adjustment, that's different), it always sounds the same!
    I tried shuffle mode out of the artist view or the album view, from a different playlist, everything (it seems the matter, what view you use for playback, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehMo0JWRFC8).
    So the question is, does iTunes 12 honor the ITunNORM tag and the value it displays itself in the Get Info dialog at all?
    For completeness: I use iTunes Match, but the songs I tested with were all stored on my local drive.

    That "Read Only" setting could explain the "locked" report. Have you tried changing that? Have you tried working with that file in another folder?

    if I check "ignore ownership on volume" (finder > file > get info), how does this affect wgm sharing settings?
    i.e. Is it ignored if WGM handles the share?
    does it override wgm's settings?

    The "ignore ownership" box in the Finder's Info window completely disables local POSIX and ACL permissions, making the affected volume act like a removable disk. (Any user assumes POSIX ownership of the volume with full control.)
    If you want to use a volume to house a share point, do NOT check the ignore ownership box. Yes, you can share a volume with it checked, but with very unexpected results.
    Often people have trouble sharing FireWire disks because they don't check to see if the "ignore ownership" box is unchecked before attempting to share them.

  • Some Get Info File Data Not Showing Up On Ext Hard Drives

    I've stored all my videos on my external firewire harddrives. I notice some of the file information in the Get Info window on these videos is missing after they are transferred to the external harddrive. Last Opened, Dimensions and Duration are blank. If I play the video these fields remain blank. However the same file on my internal harddrive shows this data.
    Anyway to get this information to appear in these files on my external hard drives?

    What volume format are your external hard drives?
    For example, if they're formatted as Windows FAT32 rather than Mac OS Extended (HFS+), it's possible that that type of extended Finder information isn't supported or can't be preserved when copying the file to the drive.

    .dmg image which contains several folders and files. If I do a "Get Info" against any of the contents - they are all greyed out and not editable.
    Also I can't add any more file to the .dmg

  • Copied Files To HDD - 'Get Info' File Sizes are different?

    -- not sure how to put it any other way.....maybe this is a normal thing?
    I've copied 161.78Gigs of data from the P.B. to Lacie HDD but 'Get Info' on target disk is only reading 161.61Gigs - all files seem to be in place, seem to be copied, working etc --- but thats about 17megs of info missing somewhere?
    Uh, what gives?
    should i trash, and re-do the whole lot again? hmm.

    Thanks for that - have been offline since yest. -- seems the main P.B. drive decided to go AWOL on me - but just overnight though? No clue whats going on there -- have repaired disk, permissions, run onyx, etc..... just didnt want to boot, occasionally would boot from Ext. HDD - Drive Icon vanished, all sorts of nonsense.... and then returned this a.m. as if nothing had ever happened.
    I reckon HD is on its way out.... hmm.
    I'm now getting lots of beachballs. v. boring. Everything is backed up externally TWICE now (& cloned Drive TWICE??) - onto two separate drives - am just going to erase, reformat P.B. before reinstalling 10.3 & 10.3.9 -- off to see a Doctor/Repairman tomorrow.

    I don't like your chances of finding a standard library to pull Unix group and user ownership. That would be violating the whole theory of Java being OS agnostic. I'm also unaware of any 3rd party library that does this.
    That said, you can definitely do this. One way I can think of is making a Runtime call:

    You could use this to do an ls -l on a file and parse the result.
    This would of course be violating standard practice in J2EE when any access direct to the file-system is regarded as being a pretty bad idea. It would also make remove the write-once run-anywhere aspect to your code, though that may not concern you too much.

  • Finder get info comments

    OK, I am always confused by Applescript's /natural/ syntax -- as opposed to any other script.
    All I would like to do -- at the shell, is to simply print the "get info" file comments and or have programmatic access from, say, Perl or Python. Can anybody guide or help solve this issue?

    After much research, I have finally found "mdls" -- a Apple shell program which outputs metadata.
    I suspect the mdls routine is far simpler and (possibly) more robust.

  • I just purchased a few songs from Itunes and could not edit the information in the Get Info section of the file.  It's greyed out.  Any ideas?  Has ITunes changed and no longer allows editing.

    Has ITunes changed its editing feature for songs, etc.?  I just purchased a few songs and found that I could not edit them using the "Get Info" feature.  The information is greyed out and does not allow editing.  Among other things, I usually like to eliminate the word "THE" from group names for easier alphabetizing in my library.  Thanks for any help.

  • Finder issues and Get Info refusing to show the number of files on items on the main hard drive.

    I am having finder issues. Mostly on the main hard drive. It takes ages to find things and I get the spinning wheel every time I open a folder.
    So I moved all of my files to a external drive.  When I had finished transfering I hit get info on the files on the external drive and on the same folder on the main drive.  To ensure that it has copied over all the files.  Because it was acting up and not copying all the files.
    Get Info refuses to show the number of files within the folders on the main hard drive. It hasppily tells me everything on any of the external drives.
    I have reset, the imac.  I have re indexed 3 times.  I have deleted the finder plist files.  I have reset finder using terminal commands. I have moved nearly everything off the main hard drive. But nothing is working.
    Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what could be causing my finder and get info issues.
    Any help wpuld be appreciated.

    Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Back up all data.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
    Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
    This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
    Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
    Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • NFS file - get info permissions fetching ?

    I have a 10.7.5 client that is bound to an OD.
    I also have a linux file server running CentOS 6.3 that is bound to a different OD, but is exporting a volume to said client via NFS.
    The user on the client has membership in a group on the first OD with GID 104020.
    The file server has assigned group read permissions to the exported volume/files with GID on the second OD of the same GID: 104020.
    When the user on the client mounts the NFS exported volume from the file server with Finder > Go > Connect to server > "nfs://server.domain.name/volname", the NFS volume is connected at /Volumes/volname.
    An 'ls -l' in Terminal on the client lists the volume and its contents as having group ownership of the group name associated with this group number 104020 in the first OD.  In fact an 'ls -ln' requesting owner and group listed by their UID and GID numbers show group ownership as 104020.
    However, the user on the client with membership in a group of GID 104020 on the first OD gets 'Permission denied' when attempting to read a listed file.
    And a 'Get Info' on said file shows in the Sharing and Permissions section for Owner Name and Group Name as 'fetching...'.
    Being a NFS admin from way back, this is very confusing.  I expect that the client OS will simply take the GID saved with the file, check that the user wanting to read the file also has membership in a group of that very GID, and provide the appropriate permssion.
    But evidently that is now occuring in this instance.  Does anyone know what is happening here?

    Maybe that description was a bit convoluted.  Let me see if I can draw it out --

    Hi people, My external hard drive is not working well. When I try to make a time-machine back up a window pops up: ‘Mac-OSX can’t repair the disk. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can’t save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can’. So now I am trying to copy my back-up files to another disk so I can reformat it. But when I try to do that, the following text appears: The backup files can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled. The problem is that I can’t enable the ownership of the back-up volume.

    You may be able to restore individual items, or even an entire backup, as long as you don't happen to hit the damaged area(s).  But yes, your only real option is to erase the disk and start over.  When you do that, you might want to take the time to have Disk Utility write zeros to the entire disk (see section (b) in the blue box of #1 in Using Disk Utility if you're not sure how to do that) -- if that fails, you know the disk itself is failing and must be replaced.  If it succeeds, the drive may be ok.
    And how can I prevent this in the future. I know at least I had to have a second back up disk but I never did that.
    You probably don't know yet what caused it.  If it's the disk failing, obviously you need a new one.  Other things that can cause disk corruption are power blips, being disconnected improperly, or your Mac crashing or losing power while the disk is connected, especially during a backup.
    For power problems, the best solution is a U.P.S. (battery backup) system.  A good surge protector will protect against power spikes, but not dips or sudden loss of power.
    I allready tried several times to change ownership with Get Info but I can’t. I don’t see a checkmark and the
    section isn’t clickable either. Any other suggestions?

  • Can't delete file from desktop. Can't get info. Doesn't appear in ls -a. What?

    Hi folks,
    I file has appeared on my desktop. I believe it's a temp file created while downloading something in Safari. When I try to delete it, I get "The item x can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted":
    I tried right click > Get Info, and nothing happens (the info dialog does not appear).
    I tried ls -al on my desktop, and the file doesn't appear in the list:
    How do I get rid of this thing? What is it?

    Weird. I guess if this were happening to me, I would see if the thing is still there after a reboot. If it is still there, I would boot with command-R and use Disk Utility to verify and repair the disk (not permissions).
    The file name indicates you were downloading something to run under windows. Do you have windows?

    The following error comes up when I try to install the updated Firefox:

    When I follow the instructions in the error message, it shows that my user name has read and write access. There are a couple other items that are read only. I tried to change this to read and write, but the Sharing and Permissions options are greyed out and will not let me change them. What is the work around for this? I would really like to install the new firefox.
