"Get Info" Reports an Incorrect Number of Files in a Directory

I have a 17" MacBook Pro with OS X, 10.6.4. I've been relying upon Finder's "Get Info" to determine how many files a directory contains, and I never noticed any problems when using it. However, this afternoon I saw an anomaly with the actual number of files in a directory and what "Get Info" reported.
I had previously created a new directory and moved 23 files to it. This morning I added three (3) more files to the directory, for a total of 26 files. This afternoon I added another five (5) files for a final total of 31 files in the directory. While Finder's "Get Info" showed that the directory had been updated this afternoon, it would not update the number of files it contains -- it still showed 26 files and the old total file size. I had to log out and log back in again for it to show me the correct file size and number of files.
Is this normal behavior or was it a glitch in Finder? That is, can I rely upon Finder to tell me the correct number of files in a folder -- or not?
Is there a way to force Finder to refresh itself? I looked around, but I did not see anything obvious, which is why I tried the logout/login method of refreshing it.
Thanks,
Bev in TX

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is a known issue in Finder. No fix I know of but a decent refresh here.

  • Osx lion get info reporting incorrect file size

    Hi all,
    I am trying to troubleshoot a strange problem I am having with Adobe Revel. Adobe have been helping me to resolve it but my mac is displaying some odd behaviour which I need to explain and which may be affecting the adobe app.
    The adobe app creates a library file of pictures and the file should be growing as I download more pictures. If I right click on the folder and "Get info" the folder size shown is smaller than I would expect at 25MB given that it should contain a good number of Jpeg files.
    I have downloaded an app called "Grand Perspective" to help me manage disk space and for this particular file it reports a completely different (much Larger) file size than "Get Info" did (155 MB) which is much closer to what I would expect to find and it is growing as more pictures are downloaded.
    Any idea what could cause "Get Info" to report the wrong file size.
    I have another osx Lion mac with the same software loaded and although a completely different machine, it reports the same file size for this library folder as grand perspective does.
    Any help gratefully accepted.
    Slarti

    I'm finding the same behaviour running Lion 10.7.2 and the file with the exact same problem as yours is a Sente (bibliography software) library containing references and pdfs.  'Get Info' reports it as 130KB but I know the file is much much larger than that! Even the Size reported on Get Info shows 874.4MB which is still too small.  If I 'Show Package Contents' on the file and 'Get Info' on the 'Contents' folder which it then shows, I get the correct size of 1.14GB
    Apple Tech Support over the phone wasn't able to explain this behaviour.

  • Just updated to itunes 12.1.0.71 - big problem - can no longer access the legacy "Get Info" where you could change multiple files, easily add artwork, add album name for TV show, and much more. In previous iTunes 12 you'd right click

    Just updated to itunes 12.1.0.71 - big problem - can no longer access the legacy "Get Info" where you could change multiple files, easily add artwork, add album name for TV show, and much more. In previous iTunes 12 you'd right click and hold shift key and be able to get to it. Anyone figured this out?

    The "legacy" metadata editors, for which there was a "back door" in iTunes 12.0, have gone from 12.1.  However, the revised editors in 12.1 provide access to (almost) all the metadata elements that were available in iTunes 11, albeit in a different layout and with some additional constraints based on media kind.  Some users have / will have an issue with the statement that "Get Info has been completely redesigned in iTunes 12 to focus your attention only on what’s necessary for the selected item" since that removes some metadata elements that people may have been using in creative ways.  iTunes 12.1 basically gives you access to the fields that Apple think are necessary ... .  Some of the things that have been excluded by this rule:
    track and disc number fields for video media kinds
    show and episode fields for music
    description tab for audiobooks made up of more than one file
    Obviously the first two examples can be regarded as "overloading" the metadata elements - i.e., using them in ways that the designers didn't intend - but given that some users do find valid cases for this it's a shame that they've been deprecated in the new UI.  There are couple of workarounds:
    in songs view (or any of the other columnar views), you can still select any fields to display, independent of media kind, and these can be edited (though only one at a time) by double-clicking in the relevant "cell"
    you can (temporarily) change the media kind of an item (or group of items) to get access to metadata elements that would otherwise be inaccessible.
    It may be worth submitting an issue via https://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html - I can't see it as a huge development task to have a user preference to switch between "show all fields" and "filter fields based on media kind".
    One other oddity/irritation is that some of the tabs don't, by default, show all the available fields - you need to scroll up/down to access them or to expand the window by dragging on one of its corners.  Fortunately, the latter seems to be persistent - once you've done this to make all the fields visible the editor will open at the same (larger) size when opened again.

  • Error message "incorrect number of file hard links" after Lion installation. Please could you advised to solve this problem; my iMac (mid 2010) is working well

    After installation of OSX Lion I have ran the disk utility program and the following error message appears: "incorrect number of file hard links". The program advises to fix the disk by reinstalling the Mac OSX install dvd (Snow Leopard). Please could you advise? Additonal information: the iMac was up-to-date before installing Lion. Thx!

    I feel like I'm on a scavenger hunt and it's getting very dark!  You are absolutely correct.  My computer doesn't show my HD in the finder window.  That's been the case for a long time.  At one point, I found a solution and fixed it but then it reverted.
    From a Finder menubar, select Finder > Preferences, then either General (controls what appears on your desktop) or Sidebar (your Finder windows's sidebar) and check the box with your Computer's name, hard drive, etc.
    I read to hold 'option' and press 'go'.
    On Lion, that allows you to see the Library folder inside your home folder (it's only hidden in Lion).
    I have found the right file and deleted it.  It keeps reintroducing itself so I guess I'll need to delete it from the trash as well?
    No, you've deleted the one that may have been damaged.   As with most preferences files, OSX will create a new one, with default values, when needed, which is what we want.  (Sooner or later, you should empty the trash, but it's not a problem.)
    As mentioned in #A4, you'll have to re-select your Time Machine drive, re-select any of the things that were checked on the Options panel, and re-enter any exclusions.

  • 2009 macbook pro incorrect number of file hard links. repaired and still slow. I replaced the hard drive within the year and it's 1 tb not full. help!

    I have a 2009 macbook pro and I keep it up to date. I replaced the hard drive with a new 1 tb hard drive within the last year. It is not even close to full. The other night I was doing a time machine backup and the spinning color wheel appeared. It would not go away and the only thing I could do was restart the computer. The Grey apple screen appeared and nothing else happens. I restarted in disk utility and verified the drive. It said "incorrect number of file hard links". I repaired it successfully and check the drive as well as the startup drive. All was ok. I restarted my computer and it took forever to come on. It is now one but I can not do anything. The desktop and all appropriate dock items are there but I can not do anything. What should I do?

    It's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test.
    Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly.

  • Can't repair Macintosh HD - incorrect number of file hard links

    Hi,
    Under Maverick, my computer started to become slow.  I see the spinning wheel frequently.  I upgraded to Yosemite telling myself that the new OS X installation process would clean anything not working properly under Maverick.  However, my computer is still slow.
    I tried to verify the Macintosh HD using disk utility and an error prompted me to repair my hard drive because of an error.
    My Yosemite is in French : Nombre de liens physiques du fichier incorrect.
    I think it would translate to incorrect number of file hard links.
    When rebooting using Command - R and verifying my Macintosh HD with the disk utility, it found no error and consequently, the repair function did not help.
    When rebooting and running disk utility, I still have the incorrect number of file hard links error.  I have a MacBook Pro 2012
    1.  Is the error incorrect number of file hard links causing my computer to be slow?  What is this error?
    2.  What should I do to correct this if the disk utility does not find an error when rebooting using command - R?
    3.  I have back-up using time machine, but I'm unsure that I should be restoring these back-up : not sure exactly when the error started and if I restaure a back-up "pre-error", would it correct the error?
    Thanks for your help

    Thank you for the reply! I can't remember what it said after the repair except for the big green letters telling me that the volume appears to be working. I just ran a verify from the install disc again and the message read " the volume appears to be working ok". After that I ran another verify from the hard drive and got the incorrect # of file hard links, volume header needs minor repair, the volume HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired, Error this disc needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disc and use disc utility to repair this disc.
         The computer seems to be running great, I am fully backed up but not sure how concerned I should be.

  • Powershell Script to Copy an Unknown number of Files in a Directory

    I need to be able to copy an unknown number of files in a folder to an FTP site.  I have the FTP components figured out and working, but am running into a problem when there is only 1 file for upload.  The folder is a queue that users manually
    copy files to, so i do not have control of how many files may be pending.  And the file names are always different.
    My script performs the following steps.
    1. Get a list of files in the directory with the a attribute.  (this prevents subfolders from being processed)
    2. Loop thru the list, copying each file.
    Here is my problem.
    no files. nothing happens. normal and expected
    2 or more files. all files upload correctly.  EXPECTED
    Filename returned from variable = "True".  File does not exist and upload fails.  ERROR
    This is what the script looks like. (There are several Write-Output statements for debugging purposes.
    $ftpUploadPath = "$ftpServer/claims/"
    $localUploadPath = "$localDir\claims\"
    $localSentPath = "$localUploadPath`Sent\"
    $listFile = "$localDir\uplist.txt"
    Write-Output "Uploading Claim files to $ftpUploadPath ..."
    #1 get list of claim files to upload
    $list = Get-ChildItem -Name $localUploadPath -Attributes a
    Write-Output $list
    Write-Output " "
    #2 loop thru list and upload files
    if($list.Length -ne 0){
        #Write-Output "  Getting files from list"
        # download each file in the list
        foreach ($file in $list -cne "") {
            Write-Output $file
        } # end foreach file
    } #end if($list.Length)
    else {
        Write-Output "  No files for upload"
    } #end else($list.Length)
    Thanks in advance,
    Greg

    You are writing way too many lines for such a simple task. Try this:
    Get-ChildItem -Name $localUploadPath -Attributes a |
    ForEach-Object{
    Write-Host $_ -fore green
    $_
    \_(ツ)_/

  • Finding the number of files in a directory

    hi,
    im trying to return the count of all the files that are available in a specific directory. does anyone know how or what method would spport this?
    Im new to Java and swing please help!
    Thanks

    Hi,
    all you need is provided by the File class. With this class you can work with "physical" files.
    Try this:
    String path = "your directory";
    File file = new File(path);
    String[] fileArray;
    try{
    fileArray = file.list();
    //you need fileArray.length
    System.out.println("Number of files found in "+path+ fileArray.length);
    }catch(SecurityException se){
    //handle exception
    }

  • Application Startup by Product report shows incorrect number

    Hello all,
    I don't quite understand how ZAM actually generates the information for Startup Count of say Microsoft Word 2013 Or Adobe Photoshop CC ...

    Scott, I guess the best way is to provide an example:
    say definition of table, with column definitions is as follows:
    create table example (
    id number,
    last_name varchar2(20),
    first_name varchar2(10),
    home_state varchar2(20)
    Populate the table as follows:
    ID LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME HOME_STATE
    1 Smith John Indiana
    2 Jones Bob Minnesota
    3 Roberts Craig Texas
    4 Clinton Bubba Arkansas
    You asked: Incorrect in what way?. In what way is it transformed from the database value? What is an example of a database value and a displayed value?
    Report query (select, id, last_name, first_name, home_state from example; )
    will yield the following results:
    ID LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME HOME_STATE
    1 Smith John Texas
    2 Jones Bob Texas
    3 Roberts Craig Texas
    4 Clinton Bubba Texas
    If I filter out the records based on HOME_STATE, for example (select, id, last_name, first_name, home_state from example where HOME_STATE = 'Indiana') I get:
    ID LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME HOME_STATE
    1 Smith John Texas
    But if I project the HOME_STATE column a second time in my query (select, id, last_name, first_name, home_state, home_state from example; )
    I get:
    ID LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME HOME_STATE HOME_STATE
    1 Smith John Indiana Indiana
    2 Jones Bob Minnesota Minnesota
    3 Roberts Craig Texas Texas
    4 Clinton Bubba Arkansas Arkansas
    Are there any displayed values for any rows that match the database table column values? No. One of my query predicates actually filters on HOME_STATE (let's I want to filter on Indiana, all rows will still display Texas in the HOME_STATE Column, even if all the records have a HOME_STATE of Indiana).
    What is the display type of the column in the report attributes? The column is just a varchar2, but I'm off the client site for now so will check back to confirm that that the display type of the column is correctly set.
    Appreciate the help.

  • How can I get a report with total number of pages printed on my HP Officejet Pro 8610?

    Since knowing the number of pages I print is so critical to a choice of using the "HP Instant Ink Plan" or not, how can I find the total number of pages I have printed on my brand-new (installed 2 days ago) 8610?  And if I can, is it a "resettable" or rolling total?  Don't see anything in user guide and a search yields nothing usable on this blog.
    Printer is installed wirelessly on an older PC with Windows XP SP3.  I can also of course intstall it with network cable but so far it works OK on my home network without network cable.  If it matters which OS, I also have a Lenovo laptop running Vista on which I can install this printer.
    Please do not respond that I can find the total by counting the number of pieces of paper I have.  Surely the internals of this fine machine must have the requested data so that HP can tell my usage if I select the monthly ink plan!
    This 8610 was a good buy (net $89.00 after trade-in of my six year old J36xx Deskjet) at Office Depot/Max which of course influenced my decision to buy it.  So far I am very happy with printing qualities and speed, have not tried the scanner yet and will probably never use the fax since I have no land line phone.
    Thanks,
    Harry

    Hi,
    Section #2 of the Printer Ststus report will tell you. Please try:
    Printer status report
    Use the printer status report to view current printer information and ink cartridge status. Also use the printer status report to help you troubleshoot problems with the printer.
    The printer status report also contains a log of recent events.
    If you need to call HP, it is often useful to print the printer status report before calling.
    To print the Printer Status Report
    1. From the printer control panel display, touch and slide your finger across the screen and then touch Setup.
    2. Touch Print Reports and then touch Printer Status Report.
