"Get Info" result box

Upgraded to Snow Leopard. In the past when I would use "Get Info" and hilghted more that 10 items it would give me one Get Info box with all the size info I wanted. I just did it to 50 photos and 50 Get Info boxes came up. Pain in the ***. Does anyone know how to put it back to 10 or more, one info box.
Thanks
Bob

Press the Control key and choose Get Summary Info, or the Option key and choose Show Inspector.

  • Need help with "get info" dialog box

    Hi Everyone!
I need some help with trying to figure out what some of the options are in the "Get Info" dialog box. I've searched the iTunes help and these forums, but can't find anything.
    So, in the options tab,
    1. What does "Part of compilation" Y/N, do for me?
    2. Same for "Remember Position"
    3. And finally, "Gapless album"
    Thanks, Vince.

    1. when you import a compilation album (like an 80's compilation or something), itunes will import it as
    song 1, artist 1, 80's greatest hits
song 2, artist 2, 80's greatest hits etc
Click part of a compliation means that, it means that it would keep them altogether rather than having lots of songs everywhere
    2. If you start playing a song, then stop, part way through, when you next come to the song, itunes will remember where you left off
    3. Albums like jean michel jarre, classical, mike oldfield, etc, have many songs which merge into each other. Having gapless album ticked will ensure that, when playing the album, there are no gaps between songs

  • NO 'Get Info' results for .wmv files!?

I recently tried to 'get info' on a few .wmv
files I had saved to my HD.
Strangely, there was absolutely NO response,
no matter how many times I tried it.
ALL other filetypes will yield 'get info' results
    in the usual manner.
    WHAT is this about?
Yes, restarted, permissions, etc, as per usual.
    Any ideas?

    WHAT is this about?
Don't see here with 10.4.7. Maybe it's a LaunchServices or Spotlight problem. Rebuilding the former's database and reindexing with the latter is in order, but don't know.

  • Display number of items in Get Info results?

Our studio has finally made the jump to OS-X (Tiger) from OS-9. (Okay... I'll admit we had a bit of an "encounter" with Windows XP in the interim...)
Part of our production workflow sees 1000's of folders/files routinely moved around from various media - CF card to hard-drive, DVD to external hard-drive etc. As part of our SOP, after a large transfer of important files, we check both the source drive/folder and the destination drive/folder to ensure the item count is the same.
In OS-9, Apple accomodated this step in the Get Info window by showing the number of items in any given volume or folder. In OS-X, it seems to be gone. Surely I'm missing something...
If Apple truly has done away with this feature (bad move from a production standpoint IMHO) is there a third-party patch or app that can display the number of items in any given folder or volume?
    Thanks-
    j

I made an Automator action, which I can access with a control click on any folder.
    1. Launch Automator, click on Finder in the Library, then drag the "Get Selected Finder Items" from Actions into construction area
    2. Click on Automator in the Libray, select Run Applescript in Actions and drag it into the work area
    3. Paste in this Applescript:
    tell application "Finder"
count every file of entire contents of (selection as alias) --files only
display dialog ((the result) as string) & " Files" & "." buttons {"OK"} default button 1
    end tell
    4. Go to menu item File and select Save As Plugin, fill in the name and have it as a plug-in for Finder. It will be saved to
    "/Users/username/Library/Workflows/Applications/Finder/FileCount.workflow"
which will appear in the Automator section of your control click contextual menu.
This counts files only. If you want to include files and folders you will need to change the Applescript.

  • Change all file associations in get info dialog box

    Hey all,
I got this program called Style Master to edit all of my CSS files. Well, BBEdit was still the app associated with the .css extension. If I used get info (cmd-i), changed the program from BBEdit to Style Master and then selected 'Change All' it would flip back to being associated with BBEdit. Even if I create a new css document in Style Master, it saves with a BBEdit association and icon. Quite annoying.
Any ideas why I can't change the file association from BBEdit to another program?

I believe the prefs associated with this action is: com.apple.LaunchServices.plist. Found in Users/Preferences. Place this file in the trash and retry.

  • How does Get-Info manage ext disk access & permission

I was having a terrible time today trying to back up my HD to an external drive. I was using SuperDuper. The SD dialog box allowed me to choose 2 of my ext drives as targets. But the drive I preferred was 'greyed out'. I couldn't select.
So, I thought that perhaps I didn't have read-write permission for it. I pulled up a Get Info dialog box, and this is how it is configured (see below).
My user name doesn't even appear in the Sharing and Permissions box.  Nor do I see the little check box which asks IGNORE OWNERSHIP.
I clicked on the little padlock icon and entered my password. But I still couldn't change the configuration. I just wanted to back up to that one disk named 2tb Boot-backup. Nothing more. The drive is a boot drive, incidentally. But I was running the OS on my main HD (iMac).
Frustrated at this (the Missing Manual didn't help), I gave up and reinstalled Mavericks on that ext drive. It fixed the problem, at the cost of 2 1/2 hours.
And I'm not any wiser about how Mavericks controls access. Screen shots below tell the story. My User Name does not appear in the Sharing list. Please teach me.  Where is David Pogue when you really need him?

For a very long time before making my purchase choice, I neurosed about the processing power demands if Aperture. Few folks at MacRumors knew what specs would suffice. I must have exchanged 15 posts over there and learned little.
At the time I had a 2007 iMac with 6Gb or RAM. I borrowed Aperture from a friend and played with it. Knowing that would I made a computer purchase from the Apple Store, free softeware would come with it. I prefer to be play straight. Not because of fears of the 'software pirate police.' I want the support and documentation.
By having the actual program loaded in my box, I began paying watching the Aperture Tutorials on the Apple Support website. In the case of Aperture, there is a whole lot to learn. A huge amount. Maybe because it was my first PP and DSLR experience. It took a lot of time to get comfortable.
Eventually, I discovered more AP tutorials on YouTube. And then, I found the so-called Silver Bullet. The Aperture forumlll. The answer I wanted was neither simple nor straightforward. But I was able to decide on the right Apple machine, with an adequate CPU, GPU and RAM.
Aperture processes some function in the CPU. It processes others in the GPU. And RAM undergoes heavy pressure only at certain times.  While 'Importing' RAW files from an SD card, the CPU works hard. It is best to have clock speeds of at least 3.2Ghz. Along with the image, Aperture will import the embedded camera preview in Jpeg format. Things go faster if you select to import the file and preview. Regardless, camera previews are small and low resolution. Aperture then favors generating its own hi-res JPEG for use will browsing your library of photos.
Editing an image, which is called an 'Adjustment' in the program doesn't take nearly as much processing power as one would expect. Aperture is a non-destructive program. The original RAW file is never touched. All the changes are merely tacked on and are reflected on the screen or when saved as 'Versions' only. The version is tiny compared to the master file.  A good metaphor would be baking. You might start out with a Lemon Cake in the oven. But then you put Chocolate frosting on top. The result looks and tastes different. But it is always a Lemon Cake.
The GPU then takes over. Late generation GPU with at least 1000Mb of video ram, 32-bit color depth would be minimum. The NIVIDEA Geoforce GT 755 satisfies those demands. Though if I ever start playing with Video instead of Sill, I might wish for 64-bit color space.
I probably have some of the details mixed up. But the fundamentals given are what I heard. At least one of the responders on the Aperture forum was on Apple team that wrote the software. That's all I know, and I'm not trying to get anyone to 'change religions'. SSD ain't going to make my image editing improve. Incidentally, on my iMac, Aperture loads in about 4 seconds.

  • Itunes 12 - can't delete podcast album art in new get info dialogue

In iTunes 12, the new "Get Info" dialogue box has an album art. There is a button at the bottom to add new artwork, but I don't see a way to remove artwork (in the case of wrong or duplicate artwork).

    Hey ralf.haring,
Thanks for the question. To remove artwork from a selected item, simply select the artwork in the “Get Info” screen and tap the delete or backspace button. For more information on Artwork in iTunes 12, check out the following resource:

  • "Get Info" Window is Completely Blank

Ok, I'm not positive how long this has been going on -- it's persisted through at least one itunes update. When I go to "get info," the box is completely blank except for "previous," "next," "ok," and "cancel" buttons. How do I fix this?!

    gtigan
There is no patch or fix for this.
If you use many keywords then I heartily recommend Keyword Manager as a major improvement on the v6 handling of keywords.
I'm not sure of the source of your bad feelings about v7, but among the features that mark it as a significant advance over v6 are it's handling of keywords. Though non-destructive editing is probably the single best reason, among many, to upgrade.

  • "Get Info" not appearing in ARD 3.1

    Hi all.
Ctrl-clicking on a managed computer and selecting Get Info results in... absolutely nothing. No Info window appears. Nothing happens. From the menubar, File>Get Info, or Command-I result in the exact same nothing.
The only way for me to edit computers is to remove them from the "All Computers" list, and then add them back from the Scanner.
It used to work fine. I've tried a re-install and preference trashing. Any one got any ideas?
    Thanks, Ben

How did you re-install? Doing a simple reinstall will just replace missing components. You may need to manually uninstall and reinstall.

  • My get info is empty

I had to system restore my computer and it damaged my itunes folder. I uninstalled itunes and reinstalled it. I then started the tedious process of moving all of my music back into itunes and back onto my ipod. My problem though is when I try to change the information of a song (ie album cover), I get an empty box. When I highlight a song and go to "Get Info", a box opens up with commands on the bottom but nothing else. Has anyone else had this issue and know how to fix it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but got the same issue

The same thing happens on Windows. Windows has hidden files that you can't see when the drive is mounted on a Windows PC, but which are visible when you mount the device on a Mac. I have a program called disktective on my Windows PC to show me where my space is being used that works just like WhatSize. There are other ways to show hidden files on a Windows PC, just as there are other ways to show hidden files on a Mac, but disktective and WhatSize both have nice interfaces where they show you where you're using up the most space on a volume and where the hidden files and folders are.
You could find and delete these hidden files without WhatSize, but using WhatSize is easier and I think has a better interface for this particular task than doing the same thing in the Finder or Terminal.
I don't see it as a big deal, since WhatSize is both free and a very small application. It's one of those little extras that I tell everyone to download as soon as they get their Macs. There's always a few of those for any system; little free or semi-free applications that provide features that are not provided by the default setup.

    I'm running and iMac 20-inch  early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Step 1
Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Checking/unchecking a box in "get info" with Applescript

I've never used Applescript or automator but I think one of them could help me. I need to run Photoshop CS3 normally most of the time but when I have to scan I have to run it in Rosetta. To do this I get the "get info" box up for CS3 and check or uncheck the "open using rosetta" checkbox. The problem is I have to plough throgh several folders to get to the CS3 application and I was hoping I could get applescript or automator to do this with one click. Can anyone tell me what I would have to type into Applescript or how I would automate this?
    Thanks for any help.

  • "Unknown" User Showing in Get Info Box

This is strange - at the bottom of any Get Info screen I am seeing three listings in this order:
1 - administrator (my account) with Read/Write privileges
    2 - (unknown) - Read Only
    3 - everyone - Read Only
When I try to delete unknown, nothing happens
    Any thoughts?

The first time I installed leopard I lost the root account and it lowered my priviledges on my admin account to user.
That was only the beginning of sorrows and I finally restored Tiger again.
Second attempt - same result almost.
    Back to tiger - Grrrrr.....
On the next attempt I did the usual (disk and permission repair) before install, but this time I forced Leopard to boot into safe mode immediately following the install from the DVD.
Eureka! Every setting from Tiger was perfectly preserved, except for one: my windows workgroup name. I finally cured that by deleting the ethernet -1 entry in system preferences > network and then recreating it.
The Remote management 3.2.1 upgrade caused me numerous program and stability problems as well. I finally removed it and altogether and leopard performed much better. I later reinstalled the original remote management client 3.2 from the leopard disk and leopard finally tamed down and went to work.
It has that "good time feeling" now and my million and one settings from tiger are all perfectly preserved.
