Get info window displays generic jpeg icon

For some reason, in Finder and the top of the Get Info window, the icons are showing as the generic jpeg icons instead of a thumbnail preview. Any ideas?

    All my hard drives (internal and external) have a small lock in the lower left corner of the icon and I don't have permissions to access. I have 3 user accounts set up and I cannot access any of them.   Permissions are set to 'Custom' in the get info window and I can't change them. Originally I had Snow Leopard installed on one hard drive and 10.5.8 installed on another.   I started to have some problems accessing data between them and so I tried changing the permissions on ONE hard drive partition.   The next thing I know, all my drives are locked (except the ones with the systems on them), the small lock appeared in the lower left corner of the drive icons and I don't have permissions to access any of them.   In the get info window, permissions are set to 'Custom' and I can't change them.

    There is suddenly a lock icon on my external backup drive!

  • How to display the Get info window for a file or folder

    Hello,
    How can I display the Get Info window for a file or folder using Applescript - instead of selecting it in the finder and using Command-I ?
    Thanks.
    lenpartico

    The item property that the Get Info was opened for is read only, so it doesn't look like you can just throw a file path at it. You could do something like telling the Finder to reveal the item, then keystroke the command, e.g.:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFEE80;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    tell application "Finder"
    reveal "Path:to:your:file"
    activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events" to keystroke "i" using {command down}
    </pre>
    ... but this doesn't seem to be much different than the regular method. There are other methods to get various information, what are you wanting to do?
    Edit:
    Hmmm, I could have sworn (I do a lot of that these days) I tried Hiroto's method, but that does work. It still seems to be a roundabout way of doing something though.

  • What is the work around for not being able to see icons for folders.  I want to be able to copy and paste image icons in the GET INFO windows.

    I have always used images for my folder icons, and now I am told that Mt. Lion does not allow me to go to the GET INFO window and do a click on the image icon and then be able to paste that image on to other folders.    I just talked with a Apple support guy and he said that Mt. Lion does not support this function.  He did say that there are third party programs that allow using images to make icons for folders or other items.  I can see some image icon in some of my hard drive folders.......  some folders show image icons while others do not. I am a photographer and have scads of photo folders spread all over different hard drives, and I find it easier to find what I am looking for by just looking at the IMAGE PICTURE in the different folders on my hard drives, than by having to read the one or two words associated with each folder.
    THe support guy said to request that APPLE put back the ability to use the coy paste function in the GET INFO window.  If i can't get this working like it was I wouyld like to know how to get a refund and throw out Mt Lion.

    Restore your Lion bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup and file your ML bug report. Just keep the installer ($20 USD isn't worth the hassle trying to get it refunded). Then, when the function's restored, reinstall and run Software Update.

  • Can you see a image in the Get Info Window?

    After upgrading to Mt LIon and while using CS6, I can't see image previews in the Get Info window.  Can't see images in the upper left corner of the get info window, so I can't make a selection and then do a copy- paste like I could do before I upgraded to Mt Lion with CS6.  I want to be able to paste a image of the subjects in my folders..  IE folder of Panda Bears would have a image of a Panda showing on that folder.  Folder of The Great Wall would have a image of the Great Wall on the Folder of Great Wall pictures.  This has always worked for the past many years I have used a Mac and Photoshop.  I started with Photoshop 2.  All my photo folders are represented by images so I have a good idea of what is contained in each folder.  Now after 2 weeks in China, 20 folders are represented by 10-11-12, 10-12-12, 10-13-12, 10-14-12 and so on.  Shows me nothing but dates.  I have tried saving as Jpeg, Tiff, and PAD, and still can't  do a copy-paste in the Get Info window.   Apple says it is a Adobe problem, Yesterday Adobe told me it is because I am uusing a Nikon D800 and Adobe does not have a  patcdh for the NEW Nikon camera.  I then tried using my Nikon D2Xs, Nikon D3X, Nikon 800 and even my wife's D50 and none of these camera allow me to copy paste the thumbnail image to the clipoboard like I have been able to do for YEARS...   I can see images in a folder in Bridge, but the images dont show in my desktop folders.IE, a folder on my desktop with 200 pictures only show with words/ numbers/letters NO IMAGES appear in the folders on the desktop.  On some folders the folders in a folder don't show up as Folders either.
    Can Any one help me.  Same thing happens on my MACPRO w 16 GB Ram and on my 17" MacBook Pro.

    Thanks for your input.  Problem might be with the EASTER BUNNY..... have to have someone to blame.
    I can't blame you for saying that.
    Adobe is the clear owner of the responsibility to make functional their product that they claim is compatible with your operating system.  Adobe is the one who sold you the product.
    I just went looking for what Adobe has said about Mountain Lion compatibility, and they both list Mountain Lion as compatible and include such language as that on this page (emphasis mine):
    Adobe and Apple have worked closely together to test Adobe® Creative Suite® 5, 5.5 and CS6 editions and individual products for reliability, performance and user experience when installed on Intel® based systems running Mac OS X Mountain Lion (v10.8). Earlier versions of Adobe Photoshop® (CS3 and CS4) software were also tested with Mountain Lion and there are currently no known issues.
    I suggest that Adobe needs to get on the ball and get this fixed.  The time for user patience is over.
    If someone from Adobe is saying "Adobe can't fix it" then that someone is at the wrong authority level and/or is thinking on the wrong level.
    This is business and the business is making products that have value and are sold to people who perceive that value.  Adobe doesn't get to keep selling products that don't work while standing on principles that "it's someone else's problem".   Customers don't care why it doesn't work.
    It's obvious to a child that if Photoshop CS5 can write the proper things to the Apple OS so that the thumbnails are visible, that there's something Adobe could do to fix it.
    But EVEN IF this were something only Apple could fix, that Apple hasn't fixed it yet says pretty loudly that Adobe isn't making the right overtures to Apple for their mutual benefit.  Adobe, are your executives so greedy that they can't grease a few palms of their friends over at Apple to put some priority on this?  What's the problem here?  Has Adobe actually forgotten how to do business?

    P.S., You should know that I don't use a Mac and am personally having no issues with seeing proper thumbnails and previews on my Windows 7 and 8 systems, since the software that does that isn't from Adobe.

  • How do I make my iPhoto Library's version number appear in the Get Info window?

    I recently (within the past 2 weeks) purchased a new 27 inch iMac and have been importing data (applications and files) from my 2010 Macbook Pro via AirDrop.  One of the first files I migrated over was my iPhoto Library.  I doing so, I noticed a few differences between its file attributes and those of the iPhoto Library file created by default on my new computer - two of which I'll note here.  First, I noticed that the file resident on my new OS was labeled iPhoto Library.photolibrary while my older version did not have the ".photolibrary" extension.  That seemed simple enough to correct so I added that extension to my old library file.  The second difference I'd note - and the source of my question - is that the default iPhoto Library file displayed a version number (9.5.1) in its "Get Info" window, while mine did not.  I checked my file's info.plist file and the correct information seems to be listed.  It reads (in part):
    <dict>
                   <key>CFBundleGetInfoString</key>
                   <string>iPhoto Libary 9.5.1</string>
                   <key>CFBundleShortVersionString</key>
                   <string>9.5.1</string>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    I'm not sure this is really a question for the iPhoto community, as it seems like a more general issue; but, this is my first post to these forums, and I didn't know where to start.  Thanks in advance for the advise/suggestions.

    In terms of the info.plist file, I only reviewed it to see why I wasn't seeing the version number in the GetInfo window.
    The string "<key>CFBundleGetInfoString</key>
                   <string>iPhoto Libary 9.5.1</string>"
    is exactly what will be shown in the Get Info panel. I tested that by simply editing this string in a test library using XCode. I could "Get Info" to show ridiculous versions numbers this way.
    However, none of my older iPhoto libraries will show the version string in Get Info, only libraries I created with iPhoto 9.5.1. or Aperture 3.3 or later.
    There is probably one of the other database files in the folder "database" - *.appdb and *.db  interfering.  None of the Library First Aid options did make the version number show for my older iPhoto libraries - not even rebuilding the iPhoto library. The only way I could make the version number show in "Get Info" was by exporting the library as a new library using Aperture. But this exported library is now showing as Aperture library.

  • Multiple Dates in Get Info Window

    Hello,
    We have an iMac running OS 9.2.2.
    I just noticed this the other day: I'm finding multiple dates in the Created and Modified fields in the Get Info window. For example, on a document I created today, the date reads: WedWed SepMay 63 20062006
    Apparently, Wed May3 2006 is being added to all the Created and Modified fields for all our documents.
    Has anyone experienced this or know how to remedy it?
    Thanks.

    See if rebuilding your desktop helps. Use Techtool Lite or Trash*Desktop (TD may delete Finder comments )to rebuild your desktop w/extensions off. Does a better job than manually & you avoid all the finger gymnatics. You just have to hold down the shift key to shut off extensions.
    Restart to turn the extensions back on again.
    If you want to rebuild manually, see KB article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=10182 Rebuilding Desktop File and Icon Recovery.
    If rebuilding does not work, then try booting from your system install cd (the one that originally came w/your comp) while holding down the c key & run Disk First Aid from the Utilities folder. Have DFA repair any errors it finds. If unable to repair you will need to run a 3rd party utility cd.

  • ICal Calendar Get Info Window not appearing

    MB Pro Lion 10.7.2
    I'm trying to change the color of a calendar in iCal. The calendar is syncing to an Exchange server.
    I click the Calendars button in the upper left corner of the iCal window, then right click on the calendar. From the contextual menu, I choose "Get Info." The command blinks in response, but no Info window appears. The Get Info window appears for other calendars (e.g., Google Calendar syncing via CalDAV). The Get Info window appears for individual events on this calendar, but not for the calendar as a whole.
    Since I'm only trying to change the color as it's displayed in iCal on my Mac, I don't see why this calendar refuses to show its Info window.
    I've tried unchecking and rechecking the calendar from the list of visible calendars. I've tried unchecking all calendars but this one.
    I've tried removing the .plist files for iCal from my ~/Library/Preferences/ folder to no avail.
    I've tried removing the account from iCal and re-adding it, also to no avail.
    Any ideas?

    Well done, Ian! Nice solution to changing the colors. I played around with this a bit and found a way to choose the color from the color wheel by changing the code just slightly.
    tell application "iCal"
              set color of calendar "Calendar" to choose color default color {0, 0, 0}
    end tell
    You have to switch views or calendars and then click on an event in the calendar whose color you just changed to see the new color. Which leads to this slightly more automated solution:
    property targetCalendar : "Calendar" as string
    tell application "iCal"
    tell calendar targetCalendar
                             set color to choose color default color {0, 0, 0}
           switch view to month view
           switch view to week view
           switch view to day view
                             show first event
      end tell
    end tell
    The switch view statements just ensure that the update becomes visible. (I've not been able to see how to get iCal to tell me what the current view is when the script runs so the script can switch back to it)
    Still, the Get Info window should still appear when you select it from the context menu.

  • "Get Info" only displaying "more info" 1 time

    Strange problem here.
    When I select a file in the finder, and hit cmd-i to "get info" it displays as expected. The "More Info:" section is complete. If it's an image, it gives dimensions and color space etc. If its a pdf, I get page count, title, creator etc. Everything works just fine.
    If I then close the info window, then later (or immediately) return, "More Info:" displays only two hyphens: -- . This happens on every file. First viewing of get info works fine. Close it, open again, and I only get -- in the More Info section.
    Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

    Yes, precisely.
    I tried to edit before you saw the .pist because I misread that it also didn't work in the test account. The issue is systemwide and requires a systemwide approach. I wish I could pinpoint it more. I realize how nagging these issues can be as I frequently use the Get Info command and frequently close and re-open it.
    EDIT: Can you shutdown, disconnect the Drobo and try?

  • Get info Window stuck on "fetching"

    In my user folder, when I go to "Get Info" I see that on one of the entities which has permissions is "Fetching".  I came across this problem after I had to restore the system via Time Machine. Later,when I noticed that my trash was automagically emptying, as if I were a guest. When I went to the Get Info window I was not listed. I added myself and applied Read/Write to all enclosed items, however I began to have a lot of problems. Mail wouldn't allow me to move a message, Safari 5.1.7 wouldn't keep extensions and when I rebooted the system wanted me to set up Mail. I ran Disk Utility, but there was no improvement.
    Now, I've switched to a recently cloned disk, cloned after the Restore operation, and I see the same behavior in the Get Info window. I have added myself, but have not clicked "apply to all enclosed items". The machine seems to be running fine, but the fetching mystery is still there.

    Select the volume icon in the Finder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your administrator password when prompted. Check the box at the bottom marked
              Ignore ownership on this volume
    Close the Info window.

  • ICal Get Info window is not showing up

    I installed Leopard today (did an archive and install). All applications seem to be working fine except for one issue with iCal.
    I cannot bring up the new "Get Info" window for any events. When I do "Get Info" on an event, the iCal window becomes inactive as if a new window is coming up, but the new window never shows up. Is anyone else seeing the same issue?
    Strangely enough, if I do Expose or Spaces then the Get Info window becomes visible. As soon as I come out of Expose or Spaces then it disappears again! Is there any way to troubleshoot this issue or is this a software bug?
    Thanks,
    Sangjin

    Sangjin,
    Since I do not yet have Leopard, I will speculate about solving your problem.
    Very often Tiger ICal display anomalies can be rectified by refreshing your iCal plist file and it should also apply to the Leopard version. This can be accomplished by quitting iCal and dragging the com.apple.iCal.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior. You can delete the iCal plist file on your Desktop if iCal returns to normal behavior.
    Let us know what happens.

  • The latest version of Pages does not allow a Pages document to become a 'stationery pad'!  Is there a way to do this this other than through the 'Get Info' window?

    The latest version of Mavericks does not allow a Pages document to become a 'stationery pad'!  Is there a way to do this this other than through the 'Get Info' window?  As Pages templates cannot be ordered in folders, my many templates are effectively unusable now and I need to find another way to order and access them.

    Are you aware of that you can still use Pages 09 on Mavericks? You don't have to go thru the grieves of using the crippled Pages 5. Pages 09 should bi in Applications/iWork 09 folder.

  • How can I add to the options automatically appearing in Get Info window?

    Can anyone please tell me if there is a way to change the options in the Get Info window to show more of them? For example, as well as Album Name, Artist, Composer, Genre, date I'd like to have Grouping and Comment come up each time. At the moment, for each album I import I have to go to Edit>View Options and then add them. It is getting to be a drag. I tried ticking them in Library>Show Columns but that doesn't seem to bring them up in the Get Info window. And yes, I do regularly want to add the same comment to every track on the album!

    Mike,
    Thank you, your info has been very helpful and I think I have followed you (wouldn't it be nice if English were less vague?) - selecting multiple items had me a little stumped - do you mean that I go to, say, Library, and highlight an album and then CMD-I means I that exactly all the things I wanted come up? I did this a few times and it works fine. But I'm not sure if that is actually what you meant. Maybe there is another way of selecting multiple items that I haven't yet cottoned on to? You can tell I'm not very good at this, I really appreciate your help.

  • It is no longer possible to use ALT + N and ALT + P from the "get info" window.

    On a PC, previously, when in the "get info" windows, it was possible to use ALT + N and ALT + P to switch to the song information for the next and previous song.  Since the update to the newest iTunes, it's no longer possible.  Has anybody found a keyboard shortcut that works?  The "keyboard shortcut" thing in iTunes says you can still use ALT + N, but it doesn't seem to be working for me.  Is it working for anybody else?

    You're welcome.

  • ITunes update to 4.0 requires checking 32-bit mode in "Get Info" window. No such checkbox exists. iTunes refuses to launch. iMac 27-in., Mac OS 10.6.8. Tried re-installing iTunes 4, but went into infinite loop while in "Registering Installed Components"

    After updating to iTunes 4, launching the application indicated that 64-bit mode was only available in Mac OS 10.7 Lion and to use in 32-bit mode by checking the 32-bit mode checkbox in the iTunes "Get Info" window. However, this window does not have the aforementioned checkbox. Thus, iTunes is now unusable.  Tried to download fresh install from Apple site, but this process went into an infinite loop during the "registering installed components" phase of the installation. Had to force quit. System is iMac 27-inch, Core i7 processor, Mac OS 10.6.8.  Is there a problem with iTunes 4? Can I go back to the previous version? Thanks.

    Ah! I found several other people with the same problem in this forum. I followed the suggestion to move iTunes 4 from the "Applications" to the desktop and launch it from there. It worked! I moved it back into the Application folder and its still okay.  Thanks!  This is a definitely a bug that Apple needs to address quickly.
