Get mail button

What does this button do? When i press it, nothing happens, but I am still getting mail? Is there a difference? I hope I'm not missing any mail.
Thanks,
Claudia

The Mail application's Get Mail button does exactly what it indicates - it checks the incoming mail server for all enabled accounts for new mail.
There is no difference between selecting this button and your automatic checking for new mail setting.
Mail > Preferences > Accounts under the Advanced tab for the account preferences > Include when automatically checking for new mail and Mail > Preferences > General > Check for new mail.
What type of account - POP or IMAP?
Have you checked the account via webmail access using a browser to confirm there are new messages available at the server which have not been received by the Mail application?

  • I updated Fire Fox to 5.0 and now my get mail button is gone. How do I get it back?

I updated fire fox to 5.0 now my get mail button is gone.
how do i get it back?
the extension that gave it to me is not compatible with FF 5.o.
where do i go to find a get mail extension that is?

Install the new version of GetMail. <br />
    http://webdesigns.ms11.net/getmail.html
That extension isn't hosted an AMO, which makes it a lot harder (and more expensive) for the developer of that extension to provide automatic updates for that extension.
''"beer" fund donations probably wouldn't cover the costs for secure HTTPS web host costs, which would make automatic updates possible, IMO''

  • How to make "Get Mail" button work for new IMAP acct?

Recently, I started new Internet service with Charter. I set up my new email mail account on my iMac, and everything is working perfectly.....except that Mail checks the Charter email account for new messages ONLY when Mail is first started or the first time I "Synchronize". There's no way to know that messages are waiting, and no other way to download messages.
When I click the "get mail" button, the little wheel thing appears for all the accounts (I still have my ATT accounts active), except the Charter account. When Mail automatically checks for messages, it checks all the accounts except the Charter account.
The messages sent to the Charter account show up right away on the web (looking at my account on Charter's web site). I have no trouble at all sending emails. I have the account set up with IMAP (although, I tried POP, with no change). I have this account set to "Include when automatically checking for messages". I've shut down and restarted multiple times.
I've talked with Charter support, and they've checked their server and all my settings, and everything is OK. I'm inclined to agree it's not an issue on their end. It seems to be Mail.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Yup. It was set to "every 5 minutes", and changing that made no difference. Mail completely ignores the charter account when doing the automated mail check and when I click "get mail".
I went to the local Apple store, without my iMac but with screen shots of the email settings, plus settings info from charter, and we set up the account on one of the iMacs there. It worked perfectly. The guy helping me suggested deleteting the account and setting it up again.
I did exactly that, but the behavior is the same. So.....the next thing to do is take the iMac in. (sigh.)

  • "get mail" button gone

I have a strange occurence to report and I hope someone can answer my question. I am using Mail, and my "get mail" button on the main window in the program has disappeared, and I don't know what to do about it. I mean it simply doesn't appear on the window. I haven't heard of such a thing, and it seems noone has posted this observation. I'm pretty sure I have been using a icon on the main wondow to tell the program to get my e-mail all along, and it's just not there.
Can anyone help. It's a little inconvienient to not be able to use that button. That and this shouldn't be happening to beginn with, so I hope noting else is really wrong. Thus far I don't think so.

    Hi Sara
from the mail menu, select View-Customize Toolbar.
From there you can drag the 'get mail' button back into the toolbar, or choose to drag the default toolbar set.
You can also get mail by selecting Mailbox-get new mail or by clicking & holding the Mail icon in the dock - after a short delay you'll see a menu which includes 'get new mail' or by using Command (apple key)-Shift-N from the keyboard.
Hopefully that'll get your mail app back to normal.

  • Get Mail button location in toolbar

Can someone explain to me why my Get Mail button appears in different places on the toolbar on my two Macs even though I am running the same version of mail.app (3.2, Build 919/919.2)? On my G5 the button is at the far left. On my G4 PowerBook it is in the middle between the New Message and Redirect buttons. (The Redirect button doesn't even appear on the G5). As far as I know I have never changed any preferences related to the toolbars.

Probably it was moved on one of them. If you press the command key (⌘), the toolbar items can be dragged to different positions. If if bothers you, ⌘-drag it back.
    Hope this helps...

  • How can I turn off the delivery of mail when I turn on the program. I want it wait until I click the get mail button before it brings the mail over

I do not want the program to bring over my mail until I click the get mail button. I look at my mail on my providers site and delete the item I do not want to look at before going to Thunderbird to actually read it. And I do not want to receive any mail that might come to me until I can determine if I want to read it first.

Disable 'Check for new messages at startup' in your Account Settings.

how can I 'reactivate' my 'Get Mail" button so I can retrieve mail manually. The emails do come in at various intervals. I  have a Mac OSX 10.5.8/\. The small envelope 'button does change colour when I click it, but I don't get that whirling gear.

Thank you for the reply. At your suggestion, I did try 'get new mail' under Mailboxes, but still nothing, no whirling gear. As I wrote earlier, emails do come in at various intervals, but just not when I click the envelope icon.

  • Why is Get Mail button not working in Mavericks?

I often click on it if I'm expecting an email and it hasn't arrived yet. I've just installed Mavericks on my 1/1/2 year-old iMac, and I can't get the Get Mail envelope icon to do anything, except blink at me.

The progress wheels (gears) have been dropped in 10.9, so when you click the envelope icon, there is no longer a visible cue that anything is happening.
If you haven't done this already, you can choose to show the Mail Activity viewer by clicking on the button in the bottom left hand corner of the Mail window. If you have no mail, it doesn't show anything when you click the envelope icon, but it will give an indication when there is something going on in Mail.

  • Get mail button not working can not receive any mail

    Hello
my mail stops working half way. I can sent messages but suddenly my get mail is not working anymore. not through the button and not through the mailbox menu.
    any help
    regards

Who is your ISP, how is your mail configured - POP or IMAP and do you get any error messages and if so what are they?

  • On my inbox I lost my "get mail" button

I can not see my "get mail" or "write" or "send" buttons. What is going on?

Get Mail and Write are on the Mail Toolbar in the main Window.
Send is on the Composition Toolbar in the Write Window.
If you are missing toolbars you turn those on by going to the appropriate window and selecting View-Toolbars from the Menu Bar.
If you are missing the menu bar also press the alt key to make that appear.
The alt key or F10 will display hidden menu bars in most applications.

  • Incomming messages -9 of 9 @ 0KB/s- every time I hit the get mail button

This isn't the first time this has happened and it seems to come and go all by itself. In this case it's showing "receiving 9 of 9" but I've seen 2 of 2, 12 of 12, etc. I've tried repairing permissions, running virus software (NAV 11), and just about everything else I can think of just short of reloading Snow Leopard. It doesn't seem to affect anything (nor do my message totals change) but I find it odd and somewhat disturbing that my mail is doing something I have no explanation for.

    Hi,
Make sure your PC has the latest software and driver updates available.
Does the issue persist when testing iTunes in another user account?

  • Get e-mail button doesn't work

The only way I can get Thunderbird 24.5.0 to get this messages is to hit the drop down arrow and click on each of the two accounts separately. Even the get all new messages doesn't work. I've tried to delete the inbox & inbox.mfg (?) folders for each account and the local folder, resetting Thunderbird, tried to remove icons during customizing tool bar, then restoring defaults without any luck. I don't think something is set up correctly. What I am trying to get Thunderbird to do is to check both accounts with the get mail button and put all the massages in the same inbox. It worked that way on the version I had on XP and I have moved to WIn 7 can't figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

''check both accounts with the get mail button''
Tools (Alt-T) - Account Settings - Server Settings - Advanced
Check 'Include this server when getting new mail.'
''... put all the massages in the same inbox.''

It sounds like you're looking for the button that sends emails you've written, but that haven't successfully been sent yet. The Get Mail button does this.

Since downloading Yosemite 10.10.2, emails are not automatically downloading. I have to either click on Get Mail or click in and out om mailbox.
It's very frustrating as it does not happen on my iPad or Iphone.

    Howdy welcon,
It sounds like your Mail application is not checking for mail automatically anymore after updating to 10.10.2. It seems to me that the setting for this may have reset, or changed at some point thereafter so I would check the preferences for the Mail application:
    General preferences - Mail Help
    Check for new messages
When Mail gets new messages from the mail server. By default, the option is set to Automatically (Mail varies how often it gets messages, based on whether your Mac is plugged into an electrical outlet).
An IMAP account may get messages more frequently if the mail server supports the IDLE command; make sure the option to use it is selected in the account’s Advanced pane in Mail preferences.
If you set the option to Manually, click the Get Mail button in the Mail toolbar to check for messages. (Whenever you click an IMAP or Exchange mailbox, it syncs with the server, and shows new messages.)
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling
