I am working for a dinosaur company. They have me using a PC that, even though it runs XP, looks like something from the 90s. I also have a G5, but it is running OSX.2.8! What can I do to get back into this century? I want to get to at least Tiger on my Mac. Can I upgrade straight from 2.8 to 4? If not, what must I do?

Consider what third-party software and hardware you may also need to upgrade. There were significant updates from X.2 to X.3 to X.4 in the Mac OS, so upgrading to 10.4 may render some of your third-party software and hardware inoperative until you get more recent versions, if those companies are still in business and have updates available. (Usually OS requirements are stated as 10.2 or higher, but in some cases it may be more like 10.3 or earlier.)
One alternative is to install 10.4 on a new hard drive, either internal or external FW/USB drive. Then you can boot from either the new OS X.4 or the old OS X.2, I think you can press option at boot time to select which, or use Startup Disc Preference Panel. Then you can retain the compatibility with any other dinosaur software/hardware until you can get the X.4 system working with all your third-party add-ons needed to support your current work.

I had got my iphone 3gs from the US in april and it was purchased without contract from AT&T. When i got it here in India I jail broke it using Spirit. There was a dead pixel in my phone and hence i had to send it back to US for replacement. Before sending it I restored it back to factory settings. Now my current phone config is given below

Perhaps you should have done some more research before purchasing an iPhone from the US? If you had, you would have found out that it would not work in India and would not have purchased it in the first place?
Your solution is that you need to purchase another iPhone from a country like the UK that sells unlocked iPhones to get the phone to work in India. You can't do this online, so it would mean purchasing one next time you visit the UK, or getting a friend who is visiting the UK to purchase an unlocked iPhone from the Apple store.
I suppose it is too late to send your other iPhone back to the States and get a refund? If so, you are stuck with a non functioning and very expensive paper weight!

If the iPhone is in recovery mode simply due to a software issue (ie: a failed iOS update), it's very easy to get it out of recovery mode. It just needs to be restored.
If the owner is selling it and the only problem he/she mentions is that it's in recovery mode, it's very likely there are some other issues also. It could have a hardware problem that the owner is not revealing or is unaware of. It may also have been jailbroken and this can permanently brick the phone.
Best not purchase it as the odds of you ending up with a very colorful paperweight are high.

What kind of documents? Office? iWork? Text Edit? What version?
What settings do you have in regards to power saver and/or screen saver?
For these kinds of system glitches I always recommend installing and running Onyx 'Automation'. If that does not work you should reinstall the offending software, if possible.

I need someone to help me out of this hole please for the love of God!

About a month ago water was spilled onto my MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core Duo. This caused several keys on my keyboard to stick and several other keys to not function and all. To add insult to injury the DVD optical drive now works about one out of every 100 times. To drive the final nail through my brain I have been unable to locate my install disk one.
The problems stems from this.....at some point my admin password was needing to be input which it was. However not noticing the key sticking problem right away the password was somehow reset to a random number of stuck key inputs and punctuation marks. I now no longer have Admin access to my own computer.
The situation is getting desperate. Luckily I do not have to input the password on boot up but I can not add any new programs or upgrade any existing programs as I can not modify the applications folder....not being the admin and all.
I solved the keyboard problem by way of the apple mini bluetooth keyboard and just yesterday I purchased a USB external optical drive. However I have had any luck booting to the install disk (I have since borrowed a friends)
Last night I got close to resetting the password using target mode and another mac but it was sounding like I wasn't quite getting booted into single user mode as when I imput the standard seried of fsck -y and rm /-uaw and the rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone I ended up getting a promt that said something to the effect of override -rw-------uw/0 var/db/.applesetupdone? at which point I was being prompted for a yes or no which I input "Y" for yes and then it just returned and said permission denied.
Now I am back at the attempt again this morning and have another install disk. I can get to the Utilities meny and select any of the tools....."reset password" " or "system profiler" however pretty much every single utility tool I select "Quits unexpectedly" and I am asked to reset and relaunch but I can NOT get them to work.
I refer to Console and I see some error messages saying cryptic things such as....

Wow you guys are completely off base about how I am reacting, sorry....I mean now I'm a little upset because you have no idea how frustrating this is for me, I have said over and over how appreciative I am of everyone who has even replied. In reading and re-reading my last post I think it is pretty clear what my intent was with my comment, unless you practice at being a dick. All I was saying is that as the individual tidbits of information were streaming in, progress was being made but no resolution yet, which makes it appear like this is not going to be some easy fix, if all the advice coming in from people who have thousands and posts and obviously much more experience than I do and when that group is all out of ideas,,,,,,I am in deep doo doo. No I didn't mean it like I thought the entire forum was conspiring against me, just making an observation......sheesh lighten up. Just saying if guys were out of ideas I was probably out of luck, sorry to put quotations around the word "experts"....everyone on this board that has had any kind of an idea to try IS and EXPERT compared to me. I mean sorry pal but compared to how I actually feel and in reading my posts many times now, they are pretty complimentary. But again in re-reading these last two.....don't see a lot of advice in there. Anywhoooo..... I took it to the genius bar.....and VOILA they were able to reset my password.......my standard access password........standard as in now I can log in with a password but that is all I can do now I can't modify pretty much any folder. However I CAN now boot into single user mode as I was correct my thinking that the master password was preventing me from booting into single user mode....so I get the proper screen now when I boot to disk and I get the correct utility menu pulldown and run the reset password utility from there and now it doesn't keep quitting however when it should show the actual Hard Drive that I am wanting to apply the reset to....it never shows my hard drive OSX it only shows my Install DVD containing OSX. So anyway, sorry if the grinding of the teeth was beginning to leave dust in my posts I'll be careful not to recklessly "compliment" anymore

Your thoughts please on getting me out of this problem

I have the latest version of iphoto 4 and have the spinning wheel when loading iphoto. So I need to rebuild the library which I know how to do. My problem is the library is 24GB with 2500 photos in it. I can only free up 17 GB of space on the hard drive. Before it all went wrong I was ordering a Lacie 300 GB hard drive which has now turned up. So I have backed up a copy of the libary onto it. Although the copy will have the same problem but at least its a second copy of the photos. I also backed up before it all went wrong a copy onto my ipod photo of all the full resolution photos. I would like to keep all the album names and whats in them but don't mind losing import dates etc. The reason for this is most of the photos are scanned negatives and the rest of the photos I have saved in 3 different formats as RAW digital olympus files already. What does everyone think is the best way forwards?
1. Delete the library on my computer and rebuild a new one onto it saved from the copy on my Lacie hard drive. If so do I need to download a piece of software so can start building from the Lacie copy? I will also save a second copy of existing library before building new one.
2. Go out buy ilife 05 and load iphoto 5 and use the rebuild the database option on it. Although I don't need any of the other features iphoto 5 has to offer.
3. This would be the option I don't know about yet.
I would be grateful for any help as I have a photo shoot for an actor on Thursday and need to use .mac to load proofs onto the web.

Before you worry too much about the cramped space on your internal drive, let's see if your iPhoto Library can be resurrected. Instead of doing anything with the iPhoto Library on your boot volume, drag your iPhoto Library to your external drive. The original will be left in place, but an exact duplicate of it will be created on the external drive. Give it time to finish the copy (and iPhoto should not be running while you're doing this). Next, open your Pictures folder in a Finder window, and append an "xx" to the end of the folder's name (any characters will do -- you're just trying to change the name so that when iPhoto is launched, it won't find the folder). Launch iPhoto, and you'll get a dialog asking (among other things) to "Find Library...". In the resulting dialog, navigate to the iPhoto Library that you just placed on the external drive. If it opens, fine; you're done. If you get the spinning beach-ball, it will be the external copy that you will be repairing. That way you can worry about cramped space on the internal drive at your leisure, after your photo library has been resurrected.

Hello all. I'm just done with a 3 month proyect, and I just lost it all.
I'm so worried about what I have done, please let me explain clearly so maybe someone can help me.
So I had finished my proyect in NB, and I decided to change the default name of some variables of a jFrame class. As you know, NB allows you to do it easily by right clicking on the component and selecting "change variable name".
Once I was done with that, I noticed that it did not automatically update all concurrences in the source code, so I had to manually change it, which of course I did not.
So basically, I deleted this jFrame class from my proyect because I thought I had the original source code anyway, so I could copy-paste it in a new jFrame class and all would be solved.
I was so fool ! I cannot create a new jFrame class in NB and copy-paste the source code of the original jFrame class (the one that had the default names for the variables) to the new jFrame class because it does not replace the initComponents() method which is in 'gray' and cannot be manually modified !! you know what I mean right ?
So the only possible solution that I see is to redone all GUI from scratch.

Anyway, this won't affect the "cut'n'paste-to-a-file & copy into project" solution. If it does you're setting your file up incorrectly within the project. You'll have to find a NetBeans expert to help you with that.

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

User temp tables not getting cleaned out from tempdb?

Im seeing what looks like temp tables that are hanging around in tempdb and not getting cleaned out.
This is SQL 2008
SELECT * FROM tempdb.sys.objects so WHERE name LIKE('#%') AND DATEDIFF(hour,so.create_date,GETDATE()) > 12
Im seeing about 50 or so objects that get returned and they are user_table and some of them have create dates of several days in the past. Now I know users do not run processes that take that long, so why are these objects still hanging around?
TempDB gets reset after a server restart, but other than that, how long are these things going to hang around?

A local temporary table scope exists only for the duration of a user session or the procedure that created the temporary table. When the user logs off or the procedure that created the table completes, the local temporary table is lost.

My 4gb SDHC flash mem card is stuck in DVD slot on my iMac 27". How to get it out?

I misplaced my 4GB flash memory card (Canon camera) in the DVD slot (above the card slot) and it disappeared while I was trying to get it out. Naturally I inadvertently (spelled "stupidly") knocked it inside and could not figure out how to get it out. The dust rubber "shields" hide it and I've tried to find it with a toothpick and wedge it out, to no avail. Are there any ideas or suggestions others may have used to get it out (I know turning it on it side and shaking won't work). Why in the world did they design it like it is -- I've had it happen to me and others have also told me of their misadventures, but they also were able to gradually get it out. This time, it's in too deep. Can I ignore it and still use the CD/DVD slot without it blowing up?

You might need to take to an Apple technician or apple dealer to let them take apart the iMac and remove the flash memory card. if you're very careful you might try a pair of needle nose pliers and a flashlight but it's easy to do damage to the DVD internal mechanical if you're not real careful.
A good story to tell your grand kids maybe ;-)
