Get old Mail-Accounts

Hello,
i had the problem that my user-database crashed.
With the help of an apple supporter i can use my old user-account and have all files back, now.
There is only one problem. If i start Mail.app I have to create a new Account and can't use the old Accounts that are already in ~/Library/Mail.
How can i get these account back?

Tobe,
Your objective is to have EVERY xxxx.mbox folder contain only the file Info.plist, and the folder Messages -- these are the only files needed by Mail 2.0 to be in each mailbox.
In the one INBOX.mbox you provided data for, it would seem that if the old holder of message content, the "mbox" file is only 56 KB, and the Messages folder is 31.2 MB, then you could safely delete all files in this INBOX.mbox EXCEPT Info.plist and the folder named Messages. Messages contains the actual message content. The other files are detrimental to Mail accessing this mailbox.
You could do this for every xxxx.mbox folder within the Mail folder, and your ability to access would return. The issue would be if you found the "mbox" file in any xxxx.mbox folder to be larger than the Messages folder in size -- this would be there could be messages you had while running Panther, that did not get placed in the Messages folder. This was the comparison I suggested you make of every mailbox.
Quit Mail. Let me suggest that in the Finder you Duplicate the Mail folder, and drag the resulting copy to the Desktop for backup. In the original Mail folder, open every mailbox, whether in each account folder, or any in the Mailboxes folder, and simply delete every file within, EXCEPT Info.plist and Messages. Also in the Mail folder locate the Envelope Index file, and delete it.
Start Mail again, and allow it to continue when it says it is ready to import all your mailboxes -- this is only referring to those in the Mail folder already, and will actually be re-indexing them, and creating a new Envelope Index file.
Many people have successfully done this exercise, and I am sure you can too. However, if any doubt, continue to ask questions. Once all your mailboxes are again displaying messages, you can decide if you think any messages have been lost, and therefore might found in the backup copy of the Mail folder, now on your Desktop, and we can talk about how to do that.
All the best,
Ernie

  • How can I get my old mail account back?

I f&%€ up and deleted my old mail account after I had added my new one ( I've changed ISP). So all old mails disappeared.
Is it possible to restore them my self? Or do I have to go to the Mac doctor?
    I'm greatful for all help

    Hi John and thank you.
    I use Mail.
I deleted the settings for the old account by mistake - I just thought I wouldn't need it anymore after having set up the new one - and suddenly the inbox was empty. A not so nice surprise
However I managed to find a folder named Mail with a POP - folder in it, in the trash can, which I dragged to my desktop. But I haven't been able to import it.
I found some useful earlier threads and intructions from some David Gimeno, so I removed the .mbox extension from the INBOX.mbox file.
BUT still, Mail won't import. It says it doesn't find any valid mbox files.
The INBOX.mbox is about 12 Mb, so I recconed there would be something in it.

  • Archive old Mail Accounts???

Does anyone know if you can archive an old Mail Account? Previously, I learned the hard way that Mac Mail doesn't like you to delete accounts. However, I don't want to have Mail constantly go out and check for mail on an account that no longer exists.
If moving the mail in my inbox from that account to a folder in the "On My Mac" section of Mail will archive the old messages, but not allow Mail to delete them when I remove the account, then that's a home run. I just don't want to zap 2 years of mail (again...)
    Thanks in advance.

that's the way to do it. make a local mailbox in "on my mac" section and copy those messages there. you can then safely delete the original account. this will not affect anything in "on my mac" section.

  • Cannot get exchange mail account to work

I am a very persistent person. I don't give up easily. But I just can't get my exchange account to work on iphone. After trying way too many times, I've tried to get it set it up on the Apple Mail program so that I can then sync the mail account to the iphone through itunes. I've only been able to get the incoming mail working on Mail. I've tried so many different permutations and combinations, but I cannot get the outgoing mail to work.
I know that imap is set up. And I can access my mail account through Entourage... perfectly.
Why can't I get it to work on Mail???? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated? Any settings to check on the exchange server so that I can get it to set up properly. Please. I am about at my wit's end. And I won't give up!!!!
    Thank you!

    JeremyLogan,
Here are some settings that you need to make sure are enabled on your Exchange server:

  • Deleting old Mail accounts

I need to delete an old discontinued mail account - when I do so will I lose all my archived emails?

Marc, I have the same question; I hope you don't mind if I seek clarification. So sitspotsit, let me see if I understand you correctly. I have moved all of my messages from my inbox into folders and subfolders under the "On My Mac" heading in mail. If I now delete the account to which these emails were sent, the messages will vanish from the folders (I guess they are technically called mailboxes)? Also, I have archived these mailboxes, and have them stored in my documents folder (not the mail app). Deleting the account shouldn't delete my archived messages, should it? Thanks.

  • How do i get outlook mail account on macbook air

i have synced my yahoo mail account just fine but I am having trouble syncing my work email (which is outlook) to my mac book air. can someone please give me the correct steps in order to sync my work account? thanks

Outlook is a client for email.
Do you have Outlook installed on your MBA?
You probably mean that your work email is on an Exchange server.
Your IT department would have to provide a way to securely access the exchange server from outside of their internal network.

  • Can't Get E-mail Account Set Up

I'm trying to set up an e-mail account on a new computer.  I have all the correct information, but every time I go to download mail, the system repeatedly asks for my user name and password.  I know I enter the correct information, but for some reason it doesn't take.  I'm using Vista Home Premium as an OS.  I also have 2 underscores in the user name.
Any idea what I might be doing wrong?
    Thank you.

I am assuming  you are referring to your @verizon.net address, since you didn't specify. There is a help page for setting up your client located here that includes a video link if you would find that more helpful.
For the sake of example, we are going to pretend that we are setting up  fictional account "[email protected]" and the password for logging into that  account in webmail is "fakepassword" - Again, this is a fictitious account for the sake of an example.
The settings for using Verizon's servers would be:
    Incoming Server: incoming.verizon.net
    Server Requires Authentication: Yes
    Username: fakeacct
    Password: fakepassword
Requires a secure connection (SSL): No
    Port: 110
    Outgoing Server: outgoing.verizon.net
Server Requires Authentication: Yes (You can set it to use the same settings as incoming, or manually enter the username and password.)
Requires a secure connection (SSL): No
Port: 25 (although 587 also works.)
These settings should work unless you have a Verizon/Yahoo account, in which case the server names are: incoming.yahoo.verizon.net  -and-  outgoing.yahoo.verizon.net

  • Getting my mail account to work

    Hi,
I am trying to get my mail to work on my phone! I have had my iphone since October and am finally frustrated enough that i am asking for help since i can not figure it out myself! It says that the connection to the server has failed. Any ideas as to what i should do?

What doesn't work? If you're trying to use the cwmx.com for the smtp server it will only work while on the at&t edge network, no ssl. If you try to use cwmx.com smtp server while on wifi it will not work. Your isp's smtp server should work on wifi and the edge smtp server will work on edge only. If you have an isp that only allows their smtp server on their network then you end up in ther situation I am in. I can only send email on the iphone when on edge since I use their smtp server, if I'm on wifi I turn wifi off for a moment, then send. Try it again, it should work.

  • Deleting old mail account

I am longer emplyed with the company that I set my default mail account up with. How can I delete that account and add my persoanl account as my default on my iMac?

Use Mail's Accounts preferences.  Use the minus to delete the selected account and plus to add a new account if you need another account.
You can also disable an existing account without deleting it with the account's Advanced tab and unchecking "enable this account".

  • Open an old mail account from a new mac

My late lamented MacBook Pro suffered Death By Coffee. Fortunately the primary HD was undamaged, so I had a tech put it in a USB enclosure and now I can boot up "my computer" from any mac later than something like 2009.
This has however become tedious. Turns out, the only two things I still do on "my computer" that involve actually running software there, are itunes and mail. With itunes I can launch the app, hold down the option key and select my old itunes library...and off I go. There doesn't appear to be any similar capability for mail however.
Am I missing this, or is it not currently possible?
    Thanks!

If at all possible avoid having more than one Store account.  You cannot transfer purchases between accounts and having maintain two accounts is a comp[licated mess.
The best way to get music on the computer is to copy it from the old computer by copying the whole iTunes folder to the new computer, start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the transferred library.
Purchases will transfer from an iPod to a computer but not items you did not purchase from Apple.  If you absolutely must do it that way you will have to buy third party commercial software.
