Get pix from backup

Saved iPhoto app (2.0.1) and pix on back-up drive and then erased and installed to go from 10.3.9 to 10.5.1. Surprised to find iPhoto is not included in Leopard (it was with wherever I got it from-- either Jaguar or Panther, or perhaps something older; never had iLife). Anyway, re-installed iPhoto app from back-up and put photos in the pictures file in the Library. Can't open iPhoto-- I get error message: "The application iPhoto quit unexpectedly. Other systems not affected. Click Relaunch....." I did send a report to Apple.
How can I get my photos accessed without having to pay for iLife (which I should not have to as I paid for this, albeit old, one)?
Thanks.

I have to BUY iLife (which I do not want) in order to get back my photo flexibility I had for free prior to upgrading to Leopard?
No, you have to buy iLife to have the use of a version of iPhoto that is compatible with Leopard, which you never had before. You had an old version of iPhoto at no cost for several years. Now you are expected to pay for a dramatically enhanced version. If you don't want to do that, there are many other photo management applications available, some free, some much less expensive than iLife, and some as expensive or more so. If you have a digital camera, the software that came with it is probably the first place to look for the features that are important to you. If it doesn't offer them, look farther afield.

How did you use this backup drive? Was this a Time Machine backup, or just an external drive to which you copied files?
I assume your photos were in iPhoto.  If you're just talking a bunch of JPEG files you can just drag them wherever you like, otherwise:

  • I can't seem to get restore from backup to work

I lost an entire feature film project in FCPX 10.1.2. Gulp.
I was trying to export to Blu Ray, then tried to just export the Blu Ray file to hard drive, i.e., I gave it 2 commands at almost the same time. My fault, but then FCPX started acting funny, so I forced quit and restarted FCPX.
When I rebooted, I discovered that the feature project is gone, but everything else is there... (the trailer and all the other project files, just the one project -- the big, most important one -- is not there).
So I tried to restore the library from the backup that was made an hour earlier. When I select it and then ask for the backup I get a spinning beach ball, but I am not sure if that is FCPX working away or is this FCPX just not able to do anything? Should I force quit again? I have a backup on another hard drive from the previous day, should I just go to that???
This library that I am trying to restore is a fairly big file, 1 TB, could that be what is taking a while? How long should I leave the beach ball spinning before giving up on it?  Thanks.

Hi Russ, I did wind up using the backup file from FCPX.  It took quite a while for it to relink everything, hours (for some reason it took forever to find files that were .caf that I used from the FCPX effects, not sure why).  The only thing that is strange is that all the underwater shots that I had in the film are listed as "incompatible."  Something about the audio has to be the same as the way it was in the original file.  I didn't use any of the underwater audio for the obvious reasons (diver breathing, etc).  Anyway...
I ran out of time today (at work now), but later tonight I will try this:  at the same time I have open the version of the film with the unlinked "incompatible" underwater files, I will open a slightly older version of the film from the library from another hard drive where I have those underwater scenes already done the way I want them, then just copy/paste them into the newer version film that has the unlinked "incompatible" files.    Will this work?
As always, thanks for your help Russ.

  • HD Crashed - Just had a new one put in - How to get preferences from backup

Hello, My Imac 24" intel's hard drive crashed a few days ago. I just had a new HD put in and I have my old files on a backup drive - time machine was backing up my files and libraries, but not my apps.
When the tech guys restored from the external backup, it made a separate folder called Macintosh HD and in there - inside the users folder - were all of my files. I have moved them from there over to the new HD, but I am not sure if I can move the libraries? I would at least like to get the info for my mail so that I don't have to set up my email accounts over again. Is this OK to do? Also what about my fonts? Can I move that over? Any advice on what is safe to move and what shouldn't be moved would be very much appreciated.

If you are talking about moving your application support files and preference files that are in the home/library folders that won't be a problem. I did it recently for the same reason. I would not move system library files but user library files will move without problems. I did not move the whole folder but I moved the files in the folder that I needed. I moved Mail,Safari, all the files for iPhoto and iTunes, my music libraries, and some others. The only issue I had with it was that for some reason I lost my playlists on iTunes, not the music library, just the playlists. I only had about 12 of them so it was no big deal but if you have a lot, that may be an issue. I don't know what I didn't move that caused that to happen.
If you are going to do backups in the future, using Time Machine is great. I use it. However I go one step further an use a program called Super Duper and actually clone my entire drive onto an external drive, then do incremental backups with it. That way, I have a complete clone of my drive and if something happens, I can get back to work quickly. I don't know if Carbon Copy Cloner, which is a very good program also, supports incremental backups or not but if it does than either one will work.

  • Getting Data From Backup With Firewire

A few days ago, my old iBook passed away (sniff, sniff). I have an external hard drive with my backups, but the hard drive uses a firewire. How do I get the data off of the hard drive and onto my new MacBook that does not have a firewire connection?

There is no way to convert firewire to USB. I would generally suggest removing the drive from your iBook and simply putting it into an external USB enclosure and then connecting that to your new MacBook. The potential issue there is that the drives in iBooks are notoriously difficult to get out and I wouldn't suggest undertaking that procedure unless you are relatively confident in your abilities to practically fully disassemble a notebook.
Many desktop PCs and other laptops do have firewire. One options would be to ask around (friends, etc). You may be able to use one of their machines to copy the data from the firewire drive over to a USB drive. Yet another option (and probably the best) would be to pop open your current external drive to see if it is a SATA or IDE connector (surprisingly, IDE connectors have been used in relatively recent external drive enclosures). Then just get the correct external USB enclosure to match.

  • My iPhone's "Other" capacity has suddenly jumped to 56G out of 64G. Yes, you read that right. Every time I try to sync to recalculate, it gets worse! Please help! Can't even restore from backup now, since my backup is all "other"!

I have fully up-to-date everything on my iPhone and computer and iTunes. I have an iPhone5 and MacBook Pro. I synced my iPhone this morning and it has 12 or so gigs of free space (even with my music and some photos on it). Then I deleted some voice memos in iTunes, and wanted to sync again to reclaim the space. When I tried, it said I had 29G of "other" data and that my phone was way over capacity and can't sync. I tried a few online solutions to force it to recalculate, but now it says it is about 90% "other"!! Only 8G of 64G free, and "other" is the ONLY thing in the summary bar.
I un-checked music for syncing, thinking that must be the problem. It did not help.  Now there is nothing on my phone except "other", according to iTunes (not even photos).
I cannot restore from backup now, since the backup includes the giant "other". I don't want to delete my info on my phone knowing a corrupted backup is my only alternative.
    Help!

Thanks so much Meg. Unfortunately, iTunes is the program I use to perform syncing. I don't really have other outside options. It is also the location of the backup I would use to restore my phone, and my only way to reclaim important data. I am concerned that, since the last backup occurred when the "other" bar was only moderately huge (around 29G I think), that a backup would replicate the problem back onto my phone.
My contacts, etc. are all in address book and the calendar app on my Mac.  As far as I know, iTunes is the way to get them back, but iTunes is where the problem is.
    Any thoughts on this?

  • Why am getting a "error occurred while restoring from backup" message when restoring using Time Machine?

    Hello
I recently made a Bootcamp partition with Windows 7 (which incidentally went absolutely fine).  In that partition I wanted to split it for some certain files, but on doing so I appear to have completely tanked my hard drive - I've pretty much wiped the entire thing.  I read afterwards that creating new partitions within Windows is a big no no Bootcamp wise, and this wasn't something I knew about before.  Lesson learnt!
Either way, I had a backup and though it would be simple enough to restore from that backup, but about 2% in it it pops up "an error has occurred while restoring from backup, please restart and try again".  After a few tries, this didn't work, so now I'm worried that my backup is corrupt.
I'm not sure why the backup would be corrupt as this was made with no problems as normal.
I've already tried the standard restore with no success (obviously), and I've also tried re-installing the OS up to the first boot, then trying to restore (thinking that the error was a result of a missing Recovery HD, which the re-install would create) and this was with no success also.
My final idea was to just erase the drive and re-install the OSX, and then when it prompts me, restore the files from the Time Capsule.
Am I onto the right idea, or is there another way around this?  I'm just very worried that my backup has become corrupted for some reason and I've lost everything on there.
    Specs are:
    MacBook Pro Mid 2012 OS X 10.8.5;
    Bootcamp 5 (Windows 7);

I'd agree. As long as you've gone this far, I'd probably start from scratch with your MBP, back up any critical files on it, wipe the whole thing, and do a nice clean reinstall.
I'd try to repair the backup drive with disk utilty and then see if you can restore the minimum of essential documents from it to the MBP. If Disk Utility can't fix it there is a small chance that a third party utility like diskwarrior or techtool could repair it. DiskWarrior 4 - The Disk Utility for Mac Disk Repair, Mac Directory Repair, Mac Disk Recovery, Mac Data Recovery or Techtool Pro 7
If you can get your essential documents off the backup drive, then I'd wipe it and put a new time machine backup on it. If that doesn't work, then I'd replace the drive.

  • Had 3G, moved to 3GS.  Backed up 3G and restored 3GS from backup with no problem.  When I want to add songs, I get itunes message that the new iphone is synced to another computer and now wants to erase everything.  How can I add music?

Had 3G, moved to 3GS.  Backed up 3G and restored 3GS from backup with no problem on a Dell computer.  But now when I want to add songs, I get itunes message of death that the new iphone is synced to another computer and now wants to erase everything.  How can I add music without erasing everything on my new iphone?

Yes, I was aware of this but the phrase "Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library." is what worries me.  Will this eliminate my Notes, Calendar Events, etc or will it apply mostly just to the music?

  • I recently got a new iPhone 4 and finally plugged it into my Mac. I hit "restore from backup" and it deleted all of my photos. How do I get those photos back? My iCloud isn't showing them.

I recently got a new iphone 4. Before plugging it into my Mac, I had taken a ton of pictures with it. I finally plugged it in to update my phone and get my music from my Mac. In the process, I selected "restore from backup". After losing all of my new pictures on my phone, and not syncing my music, it seemed like the worst thing I could have done. Is there any way to retrieve these pictures? Any help will be appreciated.

The pics are gone.  This is what a restore is.  You erased your iphone, reinstalled your software, then added back your settings from the date of the last backup.
You should have imported your photos to your computer as you would with any digital pictures, before any restore or update.
    Sorry

  • I try to open I photo and  I get the message, your iPhoto library is damaged...please restore from backup. But i din't made backup copy. How can i delete previous library and work wrom the new one?

I try to open I photo and  I get the message, your iPhoto library is damaged...please restore from backup. But i din't made backup copy. How can i delete previous library and work wrom the new one?

Try this (assuming you're using iPhoto 12): make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
      Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I have many projects made in imovie HD that are not updating to iMovie 10 on my new iMac.  Why is this not working as stated on the article HT202853?  How do I get my projects back from backup after old iMac crashed?

    According to:
Update projects and events from previous versions of iMovie in iMovie (2014) - Apple Support
you can update from iMovie versions 7, 8 and 9, but iMovie HD is iMovie 6.
Maybe you can update in two steps, first from iMovie 6 to iMovie 7, 8 or 9 then to iMovie 10.

Hi I am trying to restore my iphone from the itunes back and  it is asking me for a password, I don't ever remember putting a password in. how do i get the password reset?
You can't get it reset; if you could there would be no point in having it. If you have an encrypted backup there are two ways this could have happened:
You checked "Encrypt Backup" in iTunes at some time in the past, either intentionally or by accident
You have a corporate MS Exchange account and your Exchange administrator installed a security profile on your phone that requires the phone'a contents to be encrypted. This, in turn, requires the backup to be encrypted for obvious reasons.
In either case you were prompted for a password the first time you backed up after whichever of these happened. So think about what you might have entered for a password at that time. Fortunately you get an unlimited number of tries. Other threads on this subject have shown that it is always a password known to the user, so it wasn't something made up by iTunes. Also, everyone who has figured it out has found it to be a different password type, so try your Apple ID password, your computer's login password, your WiFi password, your corporate domain password, etc. And try passwords that may have been changed since your first backup. As a last resort there is a professional password cracker available, but it isn't cheap - it's targeted at the law enforcement market - from Elcomsoft. There are also some scam password crackers available that don't actually work and possibly steal your information. It's likely that a developer of one or more of these will post a response with a link (possibly hidden) to their "product". So before clicking any links you might want to install the Web of Trust plugin that keeps track of scam sites and warns you. http://www.mywot.com.

  • CANT GET MY BACKUP iPHONE TO RESTORE FROM BACKUP

I had to take in my everyday iPhone 3G 16G to get it replaced under warranty. I backed it up before I took it in,and then tried to do a restore from backup to my spare iPhone 3G 8G. It will transfer all of the contacts, text messages, calendar, and such, but it wont transfer my apps to the backup 8G iPhone. Some of the apps arent available anymore and I dont want to lose them. What can I do? I hear people have this problem a lot.
Also, how do I back up the iPhone im using to keep anything recent so when I do a restore to my new iPhone that I get back? Is this possible?
    Thanks!!!!

How does not being able to transfer the apps from your iTunes library to your spare iPhone equate to losing the apps?
People do not have this problem a lot. There is no device limit for the number of iDevices that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer.
Which firmware version was your 16GB running and which firmware version is your spare iPhone running? That can affect the apps in your iTunes library being installed on the iPhone.
