Get read only message about time machine.

I have a 500 Iomega hard drive as a backup drive. Both the imac and the backup drive were unplugged for about a week while I was on vacation. When I returned and plugged the machines in again I began getting repeated time machine error messages informing me that the backup is read only. Also the time machine is not updating. The last time it updated was Oct. 5.

Sounds as if the external is failing, can you check the power brick and see if it's working? Do you have another brick that you can use to see if the original one failed? Try using a different cable to connect with the external drive. If none of this works, try connecting another drive to your iMAc and see if TM will back up to it.

Mail gets stuck importing messages from Time Machine when setting up new Lion Macbook Pro

I just used time machine to set up my new 13-in mid-2012 Macbook Pro and am having trouble setting up the Mail application. It opens fine, asks me to import my messages, takes about an hour and a half, then gets stuck at "less than a minute." I then have to cancel out, and restarting causes the whole process to start over.
I've tried deleting the Envelope Index, but that didn't help. I also tried restarting the computer. Hitting "Cancel" instead of "Continue" to try to set up Mail without importing my messages just exits the application.
Any ideas why it hangs at the very end, and how I can avoid this?

Did anyone find a solution here?
This has happened to me after numerous crashes over the years and just did again. Seems to be a recurring problem when dealing with lots of mail messages.
Today, after 3 attempts, it still hangs up on 50,951 of 166,972 (yes there are a lot and for a reason).

Read only files on time machine

I keep getting an error that says my time machine cannot back up due to read only.

I'm using a mid-2010 iMac running the Mountain Lion.
Here's the Message I've been getting:
Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Seagate Backup".
Files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only.
You may need to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can't be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machine prefeences to select a different backup disk.
I've done everything the message suggests. The 1T HD works for a few backups after that but then I get the error again. When I do a GET INFO, everything says read and write but all buttons are grayed out. It looks like it's locked, even though the lock icon shows unlocked.

Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again.

90% of the time, all you need to do is power off the Time Capsule, wait a few minutes, and power it back up.
If no luck, then go to the more sophisticated fixes in the link above.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

When uninstalling an older version of reader, I get an error message about transform paths

I tried to uninstall version 8.1.2, and I get an error message to verify that the specified transform paths are valid. Some body please help. I could use the 90mb of space it's taking up.
My system is a laptop, vista 32 bit. No security update issues are involved. I am running version 10, and simply want some memory back.

If you feel you need erasing 90 MB. I would suggest getting some additional storage medium (external HD, ...). In any case, you may want to try the following: Run this fix from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall Uninstall Reader using Add/Remove Programs

You didn't read my problem - I said I deleted a POP email account. I always read the messages that pop up and in Mail when you delete a POP account - IT DOESN'T TELL YOU NUTHIN! It just deletes it - which *** for me. Fortunately, I had an iPhone and on that device I had about a 1000 messages that I could recover but on all my POP accounts I download them from the server onto my Mac so they were only on Mail (the really old ones that I wanted to keep.) I had to move them into another directory one by one basically because when I would move 50 some of them would move and some wouldn't and I never did figure out that problem. Basically the ones that would not move are the ones that were associated with my domain changes with GoDaddy, and there were a lot of those. Have no idea as to why only those were resistant to moving but I can get all that data from GoDaddy anyway.
This thread is now moot seeing as how I've recovered everything I can and am going to just move on - and back up more often. ;-)
Apple and Mail need to rewrite that program to include a WARNING MESSAGE when deleting an Account in Mail that says ALL YOUR MESSAGES ARE GOING TO DISAPPEAR NEVER TO RETURN IF YOU DELETE THIS ACCOUNT, SO YOU DANG WELL BETTER HAVE A BACK UP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP ANYTHING BEFORE PRESSING THAT MINUS SYMBOL! ;-)

Can Yosemite read a snow leopard Time Machine backup

Can Yosemite read a snow leopard Time Machine backup. Once I installed Lion over SL and it was a disaster since I could not get any docs or photos back, so had to put SL back on my old iMac.
Will 10.10 give the same problem or is there a way to migrate the old 10.6.8 data to 10.10?

Yes, you can do that. The only limitation is that you can't encrypt the backup volume.

When I called the support at AT&T they think the phone is shot and it is a hardware thing but i have a hard time believing that when it happened when I sync'd it to my computer. It did get progressively worse though, at first it crashed not that often and then got worse. So restores are failing, recovery, everything. Anyone run into this?

Errors 3000-3999 (3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443.
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.
Test restoring while connected to a known-good network.

By Toolbar, do you mean the Dock? The Translucent bar normally at the bottom of the screen, but sometimes at the right or left side?
If that's what you mean, the Dock is merely a shortcut to what is already inside the Applications folder's Microsoft Office 2011 folder. If you have Word inside your Microsoft Office 2011 folder, you can drag it back to the Dock.
If you deleted the Microsoft Office folder, or it is empty, you'll have to reinstall it.
If you don't have your registration code, you'll have to call Microsoft for a new one.
