Get Rid of Menu Items

I have removed an anti-virus app from my macbook. This app (and others that I still use) had created a menu item that appears when, for instance, a file is ctrl clicked. At the bottom of the contextual menu that appears there would be a few items relating to the anti-virus app. Now that the app has been removed (using app zapper) the contextual menus remain but serve no function.
How can I get rid of these menu items?

Most well written apps include an uninstall script or remove themselves completely when trashed.
You should check with the A/V app vendor for complete uninstall instructions.
Norton/Symantec, for example has a special script to remove all the various parts of the software.
You can also use Finder to search for leftover pieces.
I would start looking for a .plist with the A/V name, but it sounds as if it also has some system hooks which are harder to find and to remove.

  • How can I get rid of "locked items" in Trash?

    I am deleting old Time Machine files from my external drive, using my MacBook Pro (2007) to do it.  I've been doing this for several weeks, but now when I'm in Trash and click "Empty Securely" I get this message:  "There are some locked items in Trash.  Do you want to remove all the items, including the locked ones, or just the unlocked items?"  Regardless of whether I click on "Remove unlocked items" or "Remove all items", the process stops almost immediately and the Trash remains full.  What might be the "locked items" and how can I get rid of them?

    You might try restarting and then try to empty the Trash.

  • Few questions about getting rid of unwanted items

    OK, i should have done this from the start but I didn't do a fresh install of my OS to get rid of language support, etc....now I am into using my blackbook and have all my camino and safari bookmarks, etc the way I like it.....is there a way to save these preferences on an external HD and do a clean install of OS? If this is possible it is the method I prefer.

    Should I just remove what I don't want manually instead? does monolingual work with intel macbooks? do I just trash printer prefs into the trash? How do I make sure my officetrial also gets rid of the 'files' hanging around? (i read a post where someone trahsed MS office and still had files haning around)...
    Basically if I stay away from my 'users/library' folder I will be safe? I can trash applications that don't want and be safe?
    thanks all

    Here is what about monolingual:
    Monolingual is a program that can remove other languages that installed by default by OS X installer that you don't want or use. It also offer to trim down the Input Menu and Architecture.
    http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/
    Here is the tips:
    1. Since you only run this once, you can run it directly from virtual drive that mounted after you download the .dmg file by simply double click on its icon.
    2. Uncheck the language you want to keep, for I uncheck English, British English and US English to keep.
    3. Never play with the input menu for it is not worth of the space you save comparing to the risk you will lost control to your keyboard and have to re-install OS X from the scratch.
    4. Never remove and play with architecture option as well for the space is also not worth, and you might lose rosetta ability to run non universal programs.
    Good Luck.

  • Getting rid of network items in the finder window

    For the life of me I can't find any info on this, so here goes. In my finder window on the side bar, I have a category called shared. When I expand it lists an item named All..... When I click on All.... it displays in the main icon window what appear to be network connections for two websites, rentals.com and some microsoft maps platform website. When I try to drag them to the trash it gives me a message saying they can't be deleted. How do I get rid of them?

  • How do I get rid of menu Phone icon?

    I know this is a silly request, but I have this phone icon at the top of my screen (between my time machine icon and my speaker icon) , a headset with 2 dots and 2 lines coming off it, I think it was part of an older OS and related to the use of a modem. highlighting it now shows "no modem configurations found" (in gray) and "open Network preferences" in black which I can do but I cannot find where to get rid of that icon. I remember in earlier OS that it was how I got to dial-up menu of Network locations. I have a iMac intel duo (brand new) and doesn't have a modem in it.
    Any ideas?

  • How do I get rid of "Selected Item" window?

    Just updated iTunes to version 7.5 and I notice a window below the listings of my playlists (left side of screen), thus reducing the number of playlists that I can see. I would rather that the "now playing/selected item" window not be there so I can see more of my playlists and reduce scrolling. Is it possible? Thanks.

    If your CDs are marked as Compilations then you can see them by switching on the compilations feature in the browser. Go to Edit>Preferences>General and check the box "Group Compilations when browsing". When you switch the browser on Compilations will be the first item in the Artist pane, click on it and your compilations will then be listed in the Album pane. If you made these CDs yourself you'll need to mark all the tracks as part of a compilation and give them an album name (you can use the name of your playlist for example). To change the info on multiple items such as all the songs in a playlist, click on the first track you want to add information then while holding down the shift key click on the last track in the list, this will highlight all in between. Right click on the list and choose Get Info, you get a dialogue box asking if you want to update multiple items, click Yes and then the Info tab. Type in the album name and choose Yes from the drop down menu below "Compilation" which is on the bottom row of the info window then click ok and this will ensure the whole selection is identical.

  • How do I get rid of unwanted items listed on my Finder's places list? my finder

    On the left side of my Finder window I have a blue background column with a list of items under "DEVICES", "PLACES" AND "SEARCH FOR".  Somehow I got two items stuck in my list under "PLACES".  One is a scan.jpeg.  The other is an iTunes file.  I have no idea how I did this.  It doesn't seem to affect anything but it is annoying to me to have it there.  Is there any way to delete them from this list?  I have tried to do this every way I can think of and nothing works.  As I wrote this, I thought I would try one last time.  Finally was able to get a right click drop down for the iTunes file which gave me the option of removing it from the list.  The other is still there.  It will not highlight.  I can drag it away from the list, but it won't land anywhere except a different place in the "PLACES" list.  Any ideas?

    Hey, just saw the trick about holding the Command key down while dragging the file out.  Wonderful to see that "poof" and no more file.  Would still like to know how I could have gotten these [as someone said "empty shells"] there, so I don't do it again.

  • Foreach output from get-command, add menu item

    Hi
    I'm making a script to configure some basic settings for new servers, and one of the features in the script is to set ip-address on the network interface.
    At some servers there are several network interfaces, and I would like to create a menu based on the output from a get-query(Get-NetAdapter | select Name). Setting the ip-addresses is okay, but I'm having a problem creating a menu.
    What I want to do: If there is more than one NIC, create a menu with each network interface.
    Any clues?

    I didn't work that in, because I had no clue what you were trying to do when I initially wrote it.
    This version returns an object that you can work with ($selectedNIC) :
    $i = 1
    $menuList = @()
    $menuList = Get-NetAdapter | ForEach {
    $props = [ordered]@{
    'NIC Number'=$i
    Name=$_.Name
    InterfaceDescription=$_.InterfaceDescription
    ifIndex=$_.ifIndex
    Status=$_.Status
    MacAddress=$_.MacAddress
    LinkSpeed=$_.LinkSpeed
    New-Object PsObject -Property $props
    $i++
    $menuList | Format-Table -AutoSize
    $nicChoice = Read-Host 'Enter the NIC Number to process'
    $selectedNIC = Get-NetAdapter -InterfaceIndex ($menuList[$nicChoice-1]).ifIndex
    $selectedNIC

  • How to get rid of menu screen? Video stalls at menu.

    Hello,
    I am submitting a video for a credential I am working on, and the video must be completely unedited with no menu screen. The best I have been able to do so far is to clear out the titles on a black movie screen (working with a theme in iDvD), and add my video footage onto the back of this. But when I try to play the video I have created in a DVD player, the video will stall on the black menu screen and not proceed to my actual footage unless I press STOP, then PLAY. Unfortunately, this is not acceptable to the organization to which I am submitting my video.
    How can I get the video to burn straight from iMovie to the DVD burner (LaCie Lightscribe) without any themes or frames? Or, how can I get it to stop getting stuck on the black menu screen?
    Thank you for your help.

    In iDVD, you can drag your movie to the box before the menu starts. It will play in full before the menu comes up. You might even be able to totally delete the menu slide once you have done this, but I haven't tried that yet since I usually use a menu.

    It seems to me the way you would do this is to select the welcome page in iWeb, and then the 'shapes' tool and draw an object to cover the navigation bar. Set it to the same colour as the background and with no border using the fill pane of the inspector while the object is selected, and then make sure the object is moved as far forward as possible.
    That would obscure the menu and even allow you to include other text or objects where the menu would normally be.
    You could do the same thing on any page if you were so minded, and include navigation links as text or objects anywhere on the page instead if required.

  • Can't get rid of trash items

    I have some bad files that I cannot trash.
    It's a real pain. some of them are CS2 Photoshop and Illustrator application files.
    I suspect I should have uninstalled these old CS2 version applications instead of trashing them.
    Now what do I do, please?
