Get rid of the 'duplicate' fiasco?

In amongst the trolling on a closed thread I noticed someone saying that it was possible to reinstall old versions of iWork, textedit and preview to fix this and restore the 'save as' functionality - can anyone confirm this is possible, and if so help me figure out how to do it? Thanks!

Some apps from Snow Leopard can be copied over, and they will function with Save As. Others cannot. TextEdit is one I know you can bring over from a Snow Leopard drive. Nothing special needs to be done, just copy the application.

Are you syncing your songs right off of itunes itself? because it should be syncing over to the ipod however it is listed in itunes.

I can't fully tell from the information you have provided, but I suspect your duplicates resulted from having one set of contacts in your "iCloud "account and another set of contacts in your "on my Mac" account.
I further suspect that you have then deleted the contacts from your "Icloud "account, and thereby removed them from all devices. You now need to copy the contacts from your "on my Mac" account back to your "iCloud" account and delete the originals from your "on my Mac" account. You can do this by selecting groups, selecting your "on my Mac" group, and then selecting all the contacts within it and dragging them onto your "iCloud " account.
You might also take a look at this User Tip, to ensure you understand the differences between the different accounts in Address Book before adding the contacts back.

I accidentally duplicated app file? and can't get rid of the duplicate

I think I've done something silly, but I don't know how to fix it.
I suddenly wondered if I could organize FaceTime and Skype into a folder on my dock so that they wouldn't be taking up two slots for essentially the same function. In applications, I made a folder and dragged each of them in, but FaceTime seemed to copy/duplicate itself rather than moving (I guess because it's hardwired into Lion). I realized I couldn't put the folder in with the rest of my apps on the dock, only to the side with my downloads folder, so I wanted to put the apps back onto the dock individually and delete the folder. I dragged FaceTime from applications back onto the dock, worked fine, and I put the folder in the trash. When I went to empty the trash, it said the item FaceTime was in use, and when I opened up the trash, the icon for FaceTime was the little missing-application-image icon.
I dragged it from the trash to my desktop, then tried to put it into my applications folder to see if it could be deleted by putting it near the "real" application, to which the system responded, "FaceTime can't be modified or deleted because it's required by Mac OS X." So I can move it between the trash and the desktop, but I can't put it anywhere else or delete it. Get info says its file kind is an application, name being FaceTime.app, but its file size is only 78 KB, compared to the 15.6 MB identically named file in my applications folder.
What on earth did I do, and how do I get rid of this ghost that thinks its an app? If anyone can help, thanks.

If it happens again the make sure that you aren't suppressing website colors.

I have 12 birthday calendars on my iPad; can't get rid of the duplicates

Macbook Pro (10.7.2)
I sync calendars from MS Exchange and iCloud. I do not have a local calendar on my iPad.
I have tried...
* Disabling my Exchange and iCloud calendars and then doing a sync with iTunes selecting one (or more) of the available calendars to sync from iCal and then also checking the box to overwrite all calendars stored on the iPad.
* Removing my iCloud account entirely from my iPad
* Removing all accounts from my iPad
* Doing a complete restore to factory defaults and restoring from a backup
So the calendar is definitely not associated with MobileMe/iCloud and it won't let me remove them manually on the iPad. Anyone know how to get rid of these things? It's getting really annoying.

I've just installed Mavericks on my iMac and now my calendar has duplicate and now sometimes tripled events by syncing with my ipad mini regardless of whether the item already existed in the iMac calendar already. How do I remove the duplicates? It was being able to sync calendars and contacts which was one of my reasons for moving from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and now it's a mess.

Crista70, What is happening is you now have 2 calendars with the entries in them. If you go into View, then Show Calendar List, you will see all your calendars. Uncheck the ones listed as "From My Mac" or uncheck the ones listed as "iCloud" and they will no longer show as duplicates. Personally, I prefer unchecking the "From My Mac" calendars so that my calendars are all synced across the devices.

I just transferred my 3Gs apps and data to my new iphone5. The contacts are now duplicated (a few times each) and are not identical. I am using OS X version 10.8.2 with itunes and icloud.

Duplicate contacts is usually caused by user error due to syncing between iTunes and iCloud simultaneously. Turn off sync between either iCloud or iTunes and the duplicates should be removed.

As long as don't have any metadata attached to the broken files which you would like to preserve...
You could use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to "check for dead tracks on startup"

Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist. Create a smart playlist called Lost matching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You can delete them all with a Ctrl-A to select them and Shift-Delete to remove them.
You can then delete the Lost & Found playlists.
If there are ratings, play counts etc. attached to the broken links, but you've since reimported the files from another location then I have a script called FindTracks that could probably repair the broken links, and another called DeDuper that could dedupe and gather up the stats while preserving playlist membership etc.

I have a library of CDs in several years back I downloaded them into my hard drive on another computer into Windows media player. For whatever reason Windows media player continued to duplicate songs and there's a great deal of space being taken up on my hard drive by songs that I want to identify as duplicated and remove while at the same time keeping at least one copy in MP3 format. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First see this thread on getting Windows Media Player to play nicely with iTunes.
Next use iTunes Folder Watch to add in any disconnected media files that are still in your media folders.
Now use my script DeDuper to remove all but one copy of each duplicated file.

How did I get an album cover 17 times when downloading music from itunes to my ipod and how do I get rid of the duplicates?

I am pretty new to an ipod. I finally got itunes on my computer, was able to download from computer to ipod classic, but somehow ended up with 2 album covers showing 17 times for one and 16 times for the other. I really don't have a clue how this happened or how to fix it. The music it self is not duplicated just the album covers.

1) Plug in your iPod.
2) Wait for an 'iPod' button to appear at the top right corner of iTunes.
3) Open that.
4) Go to the 'Music' tab.
5) Sync music.
WARNING: This WILL delete all your music you had on your iPod prior to this.
To add songs without syncing:
1) Create an iTunes playlist with the songs you wish to add.
2) Repeat steps 1 - 3 above.
3) Go to the 'On this iPod' tab.
4) Select your playlist you just made on the bar at the bottom of the list beside the 'Autofill from...' prompt.
5) Press 'Autofill'.
