Get Spotlight and Search to work on external drive

I have two external hard drives.  Both are Western Digital, about the same size.
When I use Spotlight and Search on one of them, they display NO results.  The other drive displays results.  (They both have a lot of the same files.)  I KNOW the files are on the drive!
I've tried adding and removing from the Privacy box of Spotlight preferences.  (it seems to do nothing when I do that - I don't see the spotlight as busy or anything) I've rebooted.  I've deleted the spotlight file on the drive and it seems to come back (.spotlight-v100).  Both drives are formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"  The Info box have the same settings - Everyone can read and write.  Only one small difference.  The drive that Spotlight/Search does NOT work on has a checkbox at the bottom that says "ignore ownership on this drive" with the box Checked.  The drive that works does not even have that checkbox or "ignore ownership...."
I don't know what else to check.  I've searched the forums and just found suggestions to add and remove from Privacy.
Help!

Thank you for your reply.  Sorry, I have been there, done all that and much, much MORE.  I have read everything Mac thread around and tried all the workarounds to force spotlight to reindex the drive.  I still don't know that is even the problem.
HOWever, I did fix it.
I copied all my files from that drive to another drive.  Then I reformatted the drive and copied the files back over.  Now it works like it should.  So somehow, something at the "root" "format" level was messed up and using Disk Utility, Erase. Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) turned it around.
So for me this is a fix.  I know for someone else that does not have another drive to temporarily copy the files to, it might not be an option.  But, at least erasing and formatting worked.
**p.s. I'm only marking this Post as solving so that if someone else gets into the same fix.  At least they know they can try Disk Utility.

  • How do I get Spotlight to search a shared Time Capsule drive?

I purchased a 2TB Time Capsule that I am storing all of my photos, videos, etc. on, but I've found that Spotlight does not index and search that drive. I have searched everywhere for a solution, but can't find one.  Does anyone have a solution to this?  It is not physically attached to my MacBook Air - I am accessing it wirelessly.
Thank you for any help you can provide!

OK, the Terminal is a the way that you access UNIX shell commands (the Mac command line interface). Instead of clicking on things you have to type the actual command into the "prompt" hit return, and then the shell executes the command. So you go to the Utilities folder and double click Terminal to launch it. Exactly what you see when it finishes launching will depend on how you have configured it, so it won't be exactly what I see, but there will be some words of encouragement and then the prompt, where you will type things:
Last login: Tue Mar 20 14:06:01 on ttyp1
    Welcome to Darwin!
    -bash:~francine$
The "$" is where you start typing, or you can copy and paste things in also. You would then type:
    sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/YOURDRIVENAME/
You must make sure everything you type is exactly as given, thus you may want to simply copy and paste this:
    sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/
and, making sure there is no space after that final "/" character, type the name of your drive exactly as it appears in Finder. If the name has any spaces in it be sure to surround it with quotes:
    sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/"MY FAT DRIVE"/
Then hit the Return key. You will be asked for your admin password, and given a little lecture (this is only delivered the first time you use a sudo command). The password you type is not echoed to the screen in anyway whatsoever, so type very carefully and when you finish hit the Return key again. You'll then get the notice that indexing is enabled. Type the word exit, hit Return, and then quit Terminal.

  • How can I get Spotlight to search my Users/Shared folder?

How can I get Spotlight to search my Users/Shared folder?  It searches the folders in the other users, but not Shared.  When I CMD-I the Shared folder, my group has read-write privileges (all groups have at least read-only privileges).  When I do the search in the Finder window (with the Shared folder highlighted), It gives me the options of This Mac and "Shared".  When I click on "Shared," it does not give me any results.  I keep documents, photos, iTunes data, etc, in this Shared folder, and would like to be able to use Spotlight on it.

I appreciate the 108 "views," but there weren't any replies, so I took another shot at figuring it out.  I did a CMD-I on the Shared folder, and made the "everyone" group have read-write access, and it worked!  I'm not sure if its because now all groups have read-write access, or just because the "everyone" group does, but I don't care at this point.    I'll have to restrict a few folders within in there, but at least it searches the main Shared folder itself now.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get ccache and colorgcc to work together

    Hi all,
Has anyone figured out how to get ccache and colorgcc to work at the same time?  I can only get one or the other, but not both.
If I put them both in the path, with colorgcc first, then "g++" invokes colorgcc, which then calls /usr/bin/g++, skipping ccache.
If I put ccache first in the path instead, then running "g++" invokes ccache, which then calls /usr/bin/g++, skipping colorgcc for some reason.
Putting colorgcc back to first in the path, then editing /etc/colorgcc/colorgccrc means I can set the compiler paths to point to ccache.  However then running "g++" invokes colorgcc, which calls ccache, but then ccache seems to call colorgcc again, which calls ccache, which calls colorgcc, etc, etc.
Perhaps I'm missing something, but I can't see how you tell ccache where the compiler binaries are located, as this seems to be the problem - ccache autodetects them, and always seems to pick the ones I don't want!
    Any suggestions?

Ha, ok, as usual as soon as I post in a forum I stumble across the answer.  Turns out there's a CCACHE_PATH environment variable you can use to tell ccache where to look for the real compilers.  It doesn't seem to work setting this to point to colorgcc, but putting only colorgcc in the path, editing /etc/colorgcc/colorgcc to point to ccache, then setting CCACHE_PATH=/usr/bin seems to do the trick...
But if there's a better way please let me know!

  • How to get the Wiki search functionality working?

    hi,
Another Wiki question regarding the 7.1u1 Portal wiki functionality: What is necessary to get the wiki search functionality working? Right now when using the wiki search page all it does is return to the search form, no errors but no hits either. I guess some additional administrative work is needed to get search working?
    thanks, tom

haven't touched anything except for the wiki template jsps to change the design. it is a linux rh4 install. there are no communities on that server (yet), just the wiki portlet in a tab so far. is the wiki search dependent on the portal search server or totally separate (ie self contained wiki search)? any additional services or such that need to be started for it to work?

  • I keep getting error msg. 4 my lacie external drive that it unexpectedly quit. It then proceeds to go away and reappear again a ffew

    Hi All,
Since I upgraded to ML, I keep getting error msg. 4 my lacie external drive that it unexpectedly quit. It then proceeds to go away and reappear again a few mins. will appear. It also mentions this ejection could destroy my data. I've already updated the Driver to the most current one ta LaCie had for my 500 GB Rikki External. That didn't help. I also tried Disk Utility to repair permissions No Help! Suggestions?

That would be highly unusual, since the Apple ID is almost always the email address, unless it's changed later, and normally has to be unique to set up a new Apple ID. In any case, if you have two Apple IDs (or more), you probably need to authorize the computer using both.

  • How to reinstall iTunes and not lose everything from external drive.

I had to reformat my hard drive.  All my iTunes files were (and still are) on an external drive.
When I download the latest version of iTunes, I installed and set up my preferences to change the location of iTunes Media File to External Drive J:\iTunes\iTunes Music.
When iTunes installs, it creates files and folders in C:\Users\Userxyz\Music\itunes
So....Because iTunes didn't show any of my music, playlists, apps, etc. and because I had changed where to keep media files,
I selected the "Add Folder to Library" option
iTunes successfully displays all the music from this external drive and left the music files where they were.
But....it also copied all of this music to a folder on my desktop called "Copy of Itunes".  Now, I have 3 *itl and "xlm files.  One on External Drive J, another in Music\iTunes on Drive C, and a 2nd in Copy of iTunes on the desktop.
Missing from iTunes are my purchases.  All apps, purchased and free.  Playlists.
I have a folder "Mobile Applications"  on the external drive and in Copy of iTunes, but both are empty.
I wonder if I already lost my purchases.
I would also like to keep my files on an external drive because I don't have enough space to keep iTunes on my main drive.
    I also use Vista.....
I hope someone can help.  This is all very confusing
    Jeri

When you say all of your iTunes files were on the external drive, do you mean all, or only the stuff that's inside the red outline below. The most important part of your library is the database file iTunes Library.itl which holds the records of your playlists, ratings and all other data that doesn't get stored in tags.
    Typical layout of iTunes folders:
When the media folder is inside the main iTunes folder as shown above then the library is portable, and if the library is relocated to an external drive it will survive a wipe of the internal drive. However most users typically split their library when they find they are running out of room on the internal drive by choosing a new locaton for the media folder and then consolidating.
If this is what you have done, and you don't have a backup of the library files, the iTunes Library.itl file in particicular, then your old library is lost forever. If you do have the files then it may be possible to get the right library file reconnected to the media provided you haven't been moving things around randomly.
You can check each of the .itl files that you have on your computer in turn using the hold-down-shift-when-starting-iTunes method. If one of these has the correct playlists, and the drive letter of the external drive is the same as before, then it should all work.

  • How do I restore and carry out maintenance on external drives

Under OS9 I used to regularly carry out optimising and maintenance on my mac and external hard drives. Now that I'm on OSX, I can't use Norton Utilities - that doesn't seem to work at all. Techtool Pro doesn't seem to fix external hard drives connected by firewire. Neither does Diskwarrior. How do I do maintenance for my mac and my drives. I have an external LaCie 160GB porsche firewire drive - that seems to have stopped working but I can't carry out any serious diagnostics as I have nothing that seems to work - DiskUtility doesn't carry out a full test and comes back with errors. I also have a Formac Oxygen 160GB external drive connected by Firwire which has also recently stopped working (when I mean stopped working, I mean that the mac no longer sees all the files I have stored on the drive and asks me if I want to initialise the drive - to which I obviously say no). I need to access the files on these external drives but can't get the mac to do this. Any help?

    Hi Naz,
Norton Utilities does not work with OS X -- in fact it often makes problems worse. I fear NU has corrupted your external drives' directory structures.
    * Remove Norton: How to manually uninstall Norton SystemWorks for Macintosh 2.x.
    * Boot from your install CD/DVD and run Disk Utility. Repair Disk for the external drives. If DU can't repair, you can attempt DiskWarrior (it DOES work on external drives).
Good luck; let us know how it goes.

  • Can I grab something off time Capsule and put it on another external drive?

Something happened to my iPHoto librry this morning (it's gone -- don't ask). So I've tried twice to restore it from TC from last night. It hangs at about 2/3 of the way through, and I can't restore the whole thing.
So -- a question. Is there a way to copy it from TC and put it on an external drive? I'm wondering if I just copy it, and then copy it back, or just create a new library, if that would work. At the moment, I'm copying, for safety's sake, a backup from an external drive from a week ago. Sadly, I've put 2 to 3 hours of work in on modifying 200 photos since last week, which I will probably have to re-do. But at least I'd have my library and all my photos. It would be better if I could get the backup from last night, after I finished the job. (Or even from mid-day. Then I'd only have to re-create about 30 or 45 minutes of work)

Hi Beth, welcome to the discussions!
Might be a good idea to also post over in the iPhoto forum if you haven't tried this yet as this is a common topic on their boards.
You may be able to get your iPhoto library back by rebuilding it. I've done it, but's it's been a long time, so don't want to mislead you on anything. The guys over in the iPhoto forum are real experts and should have some fixes for you.

  • I have a new iMac 27 and a new Blu Ray external drive.

I have a new iMac 27 and a new Blu Ray external drive. What is the best way to burn a BluRay disk? I read about TOAST etc but they are getting bad reviews. What software is the best? Im running mountain lion of course. Anyone know of good software to burn this type of disk that ACTUALLY works?

    Okay, a couple of things:
I still use (mostly) an old version of iMovie because it was/is the only version which will process footage losslessly. However, the newer versions are okay - just do not use the automatic share option, but use  the export to quicktime option where you have many options as to quality, size, etc:
You will wind up with a .mov file you can drag into Toast to burn (or iDVD to add menus and burn). If in iDVD, you can either burn directly (but not bluray) or make a VIDEO_TS folder which can be dragged into Toast - I also use that if I want to keep a copy to burn later as it has all the necessary files so you can ditch or archive all your clips, etc.

  • How can I save some music locally and the rest to an external drive or NAS?

I love my MBP w/ 16 GB RAM and SSD drive EXCEPT ... the SSD drive is lacking storage.
I'm trying to find a way to store select songs/photos/videos locally and the rest on an external drive or better yet a NAS, while still getting the convenient use of iPhoto and iTunes.  Ideally, I would configure certain albums/playlists to stay local while the full library of media is on the external storage and when I plug in my iPhone/iPad the new photos/videos would upload to the external storage.
Has anyone discovered a way to do this?
Do I need to consider other programs like Lightroom to pull this off?

Setting it up the way you have with the library on the internal and just the media on the external makes it a lot more tricky to move things around. If it was all on the external you could do in the time it takes to copy the files plus about 20 seconds.
You can use the same library file, except in that file are references pointing to the media files on the USB drive.  Are you planning on doing this with the same USB drive that you are using right now>?  It is possible it may work.  If the configuration is that you have SongA on USB drive Fred, as long as the drive remains named Fred then you should be able to move it to a different point of attachment.  If you are planning on using a different USb drive you can try renaming the new USB drive to the exact same name as the existing one and maybe trick iTunes into not noticing the difference.
This is where having as much detail as possible when posting an issue is helpful so we don't have to consider every possible configuration.

  • HT2518 how do i or can i drag and drop files from one external drive to another ???HOW

how do i drag and drop files from one external drive to another, i cannt get both drives to open up. only one at a time.. i have alot to learn i know but that is where i am at the time...

You posted here so would assume you are also talking about running Windows.
Are the drives NTFS and use on Windows?
    Are they Mac HFS formatted?
You likely will need NTFS for OS X in one case. to mount PC and use under Mac OS Lion
MacDrive to mount and WRITE to HFS drives under Windows

I got an old Apple G5 shell from Goodwill. I'd like to salvage the Superdrive and use it as an external drive for my Apple laptop. Is this possible, and what cables would I need if so?
    Other info is available:
    Superdrive MFG date: Sept 2009
    Model: DVR-118LBK DVD-R/RW Writer Unit
My Macbook is: Mid-2010, running Mavericks
    Thanks in advance, God bless!

That's a nice Pioneer DVD±RW drive - and an upgraded replacement for the original optical drive that shipped with that G5.  For a finished look, you'd want to install it in an external enclosure for 5.25" IDE/ATAPI drives that converts it to USB connectivity.  Because SATA optical drives have replaced ATAPI drives in recent years, the selection is getting more limited for a new enclosure, although used ones can undoubtedly be found at ebay.  Here's an example of one, although it only features USB connectivity.  You can also find enclosures that have both FireWire and USB connectivity, which for Mac users is beneficial.  Booting the computer (if needed) by a FireWire-connected device is generally more reliable than USB booting.  If this isn't important to you, then a USB-only enclosure would be adequate.  The enclosure will have directions, but essentially all you need to do is plug in the power cable and data ribbon cable and then secure the drive to the bottom plate of the enclosure with the included machine screws.
