  • USB mobile broadband dongle randomly disconnects

This is really driving me mad. I had to get a USB dongle for my net connection because I couldn't afford a wired net connection, and after spending hours on the phone trying to get the tech support people to tell me what details I could enter into NetworkManager so I could use it as they don't publish a non-proprietary-software guide on their site, I finally managed to get it to work.
Asides from the connection being crap (I live in a small country town so even ordinary mobile phones get < 3 bars), I've found that the device disconnects for no apparent reason, like it just shuts down. NetworkManager can't reboot it, unplugging it and plugging it in again doesn't fix it, and it seems the only solution is to reboot my computer (just like Windows huh). I've read somewhere that Huawei devices are supposed to be flipped to their modem state for them to work properly, but I'm not entirely sure how to do this, and don't really want to risk borking the device as it's the only net connection I've got for the time being.
Where should I look to find debug information from the device and how to stop it from disabling itself after several hours? And are the usb_modeswitch and similar programs safe, i.e. are they likely to work as expected without totally messing up the device?

I hope you have solved this problem by now but just in case here is my experience:-
I have had this problem with on 2 different linux and windows machines. In my case it turned out to be a mechanical problem.  The USB sockets are very unreliable and for some reason particularly so with USB mobile broadband dongles.  In the first case the machine had front usb ports.  When the dongle was plugged into the front ports the connection was very unreliable and when plugged directly to the motherboard ports at the rear there was no problem.
In the second case I was using a long usb cable as the signal strength at the PC was too weak for broadband connection. In this case the connection to the usb socket at the end of the cable was very loose so the internet connection would dropout for no apparent reason and as with your experience I would have to reboot to get it going again. This was an expensive usb cable too, so price was no guide to reliability.

    Hi,
Unfortunately this is not very simple BUT you can use PCMCIA and 32-bit Cardbus slot and buy something like this for your machine:

    Thanks,
Yes, I did that. They have uppgrades for the dongles, but just untill Mac Os 10.7. Their solution is to buy a new modem from them or getting one for free if I sign a contract for 24 months! So, i think from that side not very helpful.
It is just that I do not want to buy a new modem, when it works in quite recent computers and after having spent money in the new Mac.
But thank you for your reply!

  • Which mobile broadband dongle can I use for my PowerBook G4 running with OSX 10.5.8 please?

I was given an O2 dongle E173 as a gift but cannot use it as the specification is for an Intel Processor which of course the PowerBook G4 does not have!
    Which dongle can  I use?

    Hi,
If a USB mobile broadband modem for some reason cannot be used with a certain computer, a good alternative can be a mobile broadband hotspot. This is a device (with a SIM card) that works like a mobile broadband modem, and is capable of establishing a wireless base station. The wireless connection between the computer and the hotspot is normal Wi-Fi. If the computer can handle Wi-Fi, there is no need for any additional software/driver installation. Below is merely one example.

  • Will USB mobile broadband work with Apple TV?

I am considering to get USB modem so I can use the apple TV anywhere. But I have not purchase the USB modem yet. Click below for more info on USB modem:-
    http://threestore.three.co.uk/broadband/
I was thinking - USB modem is to be connected to my laptop (via USB port), Apple TV is to be connected to my laptop (via ethernet cable).
The questions are when I switch Apple TV on:-
    1. Will Apple TV automatically find the internet?
    2. Will the USB mobile Broadband work with Apple TV (Wireless via my computer)?
    Please advise.

I'm sure it should be someone answering this question who has actually tried this, but given that the tv is not overly portable I'm not sure you will find too many who have.
FWIW, you can use an tv with a direct ethernet connection or ad hoc wifi network between the computer and the tv, so I don't see why a mobile account rather than a static one should make any difference. You would need to set up internet sharing and all that, but my guess is it should work for you. Be aware though, I haven't actually tried this.

  • USB Mobile Broadband

    Hi,
I've looked everywhere in the user discussions and can't find an answer to my problem. This is my first post, and I'm not very techie, so please go easy on me!
I just bought my macbook pro, and I connect to the internet via 3's USB Mobile Broadband Huaweii E122. I have had no issues installing the USB software, and it connects to the internet fine on startup. However when I close the computer lid (and the macbook sleeps), then I reopen the lid, it doesn't let me connect to the internet. It detects the driver, sim card etc, but it doesn't let me press the 'Connect' button (the button greys out). I have to physically disconnect the USB and plug it back in, then the macbook detects the driver and sim card and I can press the 'connect' button.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the usb modem. Problem persists. I have tried using it in different usb ports on the computer, with and without a usb extension cable. I have called tech support at my internet provider, who have told me that I'm just going to have to live with unplugging and plugging back in my modem because that's how macs work (total waste of a 20 minute phone call!). The funny thing is, that when I first installed the modem it was fine - this problem did not exist.
Every time I startup the computer it detects the usb and lets me connect absolutely fine. It only happens when I close the lid and reopen it again. Sorry if this is so wordy, and I hope it makes sense! It's not the end of the world but it is certainly annoying having to unplug and plug in this modem. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Brit

No, no router. It's called Mobile Broadband. I plug the usb stick (I've also seen it called a dongle) into my computer and the internet travels with me. I looked online for details about the internet type and connection and the only information I'm given that it's high speed broadband. When it's plugged into the computer for the first time it installs itself, and there shouldn't be a need to remove it. It worked perfectly with my other laptop (this was windows based) and it works fine with my mac, except for the 'connect' button greying itself out when the computer awakens from sleep mode.

If you haven't already, go to your Applications folder>System Preferences>"Sound">click on the center tab labelled "Output">highlight your external Bose Speakers in the list by clicking on it>turn up the Volume slider at the bottom of the window.  Hopefully that solves your problem.

  • Are mobile internet USB devices still not working on Snow Leopard?

Are mobile internet USB devices still not working on Snow Leopard? I actually had to go back to my previous operating system to get this to work. I would however prefer to use Snow Leopard...if Apple & HUAWEI have finally got their act together!

There appears to be a problem with drivers for USB wireless modems with 10.6. I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard and now can't connect to the internet with my wireless modem. I hope Apple sort this out soon. Or maybe it's Huawei that needs to put a 10.6 driver into its software.

  • M-Audio MIDISPORT UNO USB Not Working With Snow Leopard

My Snow Leopard installation worked fine except until I plugged in my MacBook to my Casio Privia with the M=Audio MIDISPORT UNO USB cable to run GarageBand. I'm getting a MIDI error which states it can't work with the latest operating system. It doesn't surprise me though for all the software and hardware driver updates that have to catch up to such a new OSX 10.6. I went to the M-Audio site to download the latest driver, but the drivers only were compatible with OSX10.5.8.
This is an alert at the site
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Support Coming Soon
Avid/M-Audio working closely with Apple to offer support for OS X 10.6
Avid/M-Audio is pleased to hear that Apple has released Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. We’ve been working closely with Apple to bring Snow Leopard support to the M-Audio® product line, as well as the Pro Tools® product line and extended product families. We ask that all existing Mac users please wait to upgrade until we officially announce Snow Leopard support. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
This is a bit of a concern, because I need to get GarageBand running again with the MIDI hook ups. Is there a work around anyone knows about to get MIDI working with Snow Leopard.
    Thanks Steve

I ran into a similar problem. I discovered one thing which may help you out though. It works OK with my Yamaha P200 keyboard but it does not work with my Yamaha NP30 keyboard. I looked at the MIDI stream and the only difference seems to be that the NP30 sends a continuous stream of MIDI clock, whereas the P200 does not. My theory is that this clock stream is somehow confusing the driver. I can't seem to disable the MIDI clock on my NP30 but if your Privia has the ability to disable MIDI clock, then it may be worth a try as it will probably fix the problem until they come out with the proper drivers.

  • How can I get an HP Deskjet 882C to work with Snow Leopard?

Is there a way to get our HP Deskjet 882C to work with Snow Leopard?  This printer is a workhorse, and even though it is so old, our budget and common sense say not to get rid of it.

Install the HPIJS package. This is an open source set of drivers for older printers.  HP dropped support for a whole lot of printers when Snow Leopard was developed.  These drivers fill the gap.
You will need to install three components - Ghostscript, Foomatic RIP and the hpijs package.  They are all on the HPIJS web page.  Once installed, restart your Mac, connect your printer.  You will probably need to go into System Preferences > Print & Fax to select the printer and set it as your default printer.  After that it works great.  And it also works on Lion.

Restart with the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD in the drive or with the Lion USB drive connected, hold down the Option key just after the restart, tab to the installation disk, and press Enter. If the computer has a firmware password set, it needs to be provided for this to work.
