GetAllSets return out off memory

Hi,
a while ago i posted a topic about getting all the possibele combinations between treenode s
the thread can be found here
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=426&thread=500849 - March 11, 2004
but now i've encountered when the tree becomes large that i get an out off memory problem on the set
is there some way to avoid that ?
the code used to read the tree and fill up the set is
public static Set getAllSets(TreeModel model, Object node) {
    Set result = new HashSet();
    int child = (int) Math.pow(2, model.getChildCount(node));
    for (int i = 0; i < child; i++)
    { // foreach powerset of the immediate children
      Set set = new HashSet();
      for (int j = 0; j < model.getChildCount(node); j++) {
        if ( (i & 1 << j) != 0) {
          set.add(getAllSets(model, model.getChild(node, j)));
      result.addAll(magicProduct(set));
   for (Iterator k = result.iterator(); k.hasNext(); ) {
      ( (Set) k.next()).add(node);
    //  System.out.println( ""+result .toString() );
    return result;
  public static final Set magicProduct(Set sets) {
    Set result = new HashSet();
    result.add(new HashSet());
    for (Iterator i = sets.iterator(); i.hasNext(); ) {
      result = magicProduct(result, (Set) i.next());
    return result;
[\code]
hope somebody can help

A less rigorous solution is to set your maximum heap size higher (if you have the space). For example:
java -Xmx=256M args...[i]
But, yes, using disk or a more efficient algorithm might be a better solution.

    Hi,
      These type of error shown normally you have to check the Hardware Configuration settings
    1.RAM
    2.Processor speed
    3.Virtual Memory
    Your DB size is Very Huge so based on your DB SIZE you have to increase the system requirements.

  • Import Manager Out of Memory error

    I am running MDM 5.5.24.06 server on Windows XP Professional. The server has 4.0 GB RAM with 1.5 GB Virtual memory.
    I am trying to load 129 material master records from R/3 4.6 ( XML file size 8 MB), into MDM using Import Manager.
    When I click on import icon (Import Status tab selected), MDM Import Manager rightway returns 'Out of Memory' error.
    Tried to import the file again after rebooting the machine, restarting MDM Server, but still it returned the same error.
    Has anybody tried loading the R/3 material data into MDM? What's the experience? What was the load (# of records)?
    What was MDM IM performance? What's your hardware/software config?
    Appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Abhay

    Hi Abhay,
    My workstation has Windows 2000, Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 Ghz, 515,555 KB RAM.  The recommended specifications can be found on service market place of SAP, and we used those to procure our workstations.
    MDM server must be more pwerful than a workstation.  Try running the import manager from the server machine itself.  If it works there but not on your machine, it is memory of your workstation.
    Sometimes, I think this error comes when import map some issues- fields not mapped accurately or remote key mapped wrong etc.
    It is probably judicious to rpove the system memory as first step.
    Good luck!

  • Adobe CS6.0 out of memory error on iMac (early 2009)

    Hi:
    Adobe CS6.0 Photoshop is returning "Out of Memory (RAM)" errors and is unusable on a lab of iMacs.
    The system exceeds Adobe minimum specs (1GB ram).
    Our school has a lab of computers with both Adobe CS5.5 and Adobe CS6.0 Master Collection installed on a lab of iMacs (early 2009).
    The computers all have 4GB of memory and come with an NVidia GeForce 9400M 256MB video card.
    I notice that this video card shares ram with the main system.
    CS5.5 runs perfectly well but CS6.0 is not co-operating.
    We have updated Photoshop to version 13.04 and have run Apple's Software Update (latest version).
    I have looked online and this is a known problem with computers that have Adobe CS5 & 6 installed with Mac OS10.7.x but only on certain video cards.
    There are people out there with 32 GB ram having the same problem.
    I'm guessing the answer may be to update the video card drivers somehow.
    Your input is greatly appreciated.

    ODrew

    Hi ODrew,
    I'm shocked you can operate OK with only 4GB of RAM, that certainly wasn't enough for my 2007 iMac to not continually slow down!?
    CS6 Sys requiremnts...
    Mac OS
    Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
    Mac OS X v10.6.8, v10.7, or v10.8**
    4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
    4GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
    Additional disk space required for preview files and other working files (10GB recommended)
    1280x900 display
    7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured, recommended)
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
    DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (SuperDrive for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
    QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features
    Optional: Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU-accelerated performance
    And I don't see that Video card supported...

    You can't use icloud to store photos.  There's a service called photo stream which is used to sync photos from one device to another, but this can't be used to store photos permanently.
    Always sync photos from a device to your computer,  Then you can delete them from the device.
    Read this...  import photos to your computer...

  • "Out of memory" error on return to FCP

    Hey guys,
    I have just finished color correcting and rendering a feature film in Color. It took about 15 hours to render the thing. Upon sending the project back to FCP when I click to view the sequence there a pop-up comes that says "General Error" followed by another that says "Error: Out of memory". There is plenty of space on both the internal an external Hard Drives and I have plenty of memory. I am using a MBP 15" 2.2GHz w/ 2GB RAM. Anybody else experience something similar? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Tried both options here. Memory is at 100% and I upped the cache allowed too. When importing the XML it does come up with one more pop-up saying "WARNING: Non-critical errors were found when processing an XML document. Would you like to see a log of these errors now?"

  • Acrobat XI Pro "Out of Memory" Error.

    We just received a new Dell T7600 workstation (Win7, 64-bit, 64GB RAM, 8TB disk storage, and more processors than you can shake a stick at). We installed the Adobe CS6 Master Collection which had Acrobat Pro X. Each time we open a PDF of size greater than roughly 4MB, the program returns an "out of memory" error. After running updates, uninstalling and reinstalling (several times), I bought a copy of Acrobat XI Pro hoping this would solve the problem. Same problem still exists upon opening the larger PDFs. Our business depends on opening very large PDF files and we've paid for the Master Collection, so I'd rather not use an freeware PDF reader. Any help, thoughts, and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Chris

    As mentioned, the TEMP folder is typically the problem. MS limits the size of this folder and you have 2 choices: 1. empty it or 2. increase the size limit. I am not positive this is the issue, but it does crop up at times. It does not matter how big your harddrive is, it is a matter of the amount of space that MS has allocated for virtual memory. I am surprised that there is an issue with 64GB of RAM, but MS is real good at letting you know you can't have it all for use because you might want to open up something else. That is why a lot of big packages turn off some of the limits of Windows or use Linux.

  • Error creating window handle and out of memory

    Hello everyone !
    I am having a .Net Windows application (VB.Net) that creates a lot of reports (the same report document for different clients and dates) for exporting them to PDF.
    While the first 75 reports are performed well the 76th report causes an error while creating the window handle and I get an out of memory error as well.
    Searching this forum and the internet I tried a lot of things to get this problem solved:
    - closing, disposing any report as well as setting it to nothing after exporting it to disk (also doing this for used dataset and datatable)
    - doing a single report operation in an own class that is set to nothing immediately after use
    - using garbage collector (methods: "Collect" and "WaitForPendingFinalizers")
    - defining the report, used dataset and datable within "using .. end using" blocks
    - take a single report object for all exports (implemented as singleton)
    - using a background thread to handle report and operation on it
    - changing registry entry "PrintJobLimit" to an higher value as well as to -1
    But none of my tries helped me so far, it's always the 76th report that collapses.
    Interesting thing: Exporting as PDF is not needed for causing the error (switched this off for all reports to test any difference).
    My system:
    - Visual Studio 2008 and .Net 3.5 Service Pack 1
    - Crystal Reports Basic for Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank You very much,

    Hello,
    Saving the report as RPT doesn't save the data which is why it's failing to log on, you have to export it to RPT format, then use that in your test.
    Also, I assume you are using the Report Engine. Try using InProc RAS to load and run the report.
    Just a few lines of code change is all it needs.
    using CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine;
    using CrystalDecisions.Shared;
    using CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc;
    using CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.Controllers;

  • Dynamic pager not swapping - kernel panic on out of memory

    My problem is that I have a python program that chews a fair bit of memory.
    At the moment it crashes when OSX Yosemite runs out of physical memory. No page swaps appear to occur. On the Activity Monitor, the swap used stays zero
    As far as I can tell, the /sbin/dynamic_pager is not running. I cannot find it when I execute the command
    ps -alx | grep dynamic_pager
    I do not recall stopping this in the past. I have tried (unsuccessfully I believe) to start it with ...
    sudo launchctl load -wF /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist
    I have even tried this in single user mode (boot-command-s).
    Also, there does not appear to be a swapfile ... /private/var/vm/swapfile does not exist.
    I am thinking that either the dynamic_pager is not launching or there is some other setting I need to fix.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
    You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
    In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
    You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
    Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
    ☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
    ☞ Paste into the window of another application.
    ☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
    ☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
    The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
    and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be a series of messages in the Terminal window like this:
    Part 1 of 8 done at ... sec
    Part 8 of 8 done at ... sec
    The messages won't be spaced equally apart in time, but they give a rough indication of progress. Wait for the final message
    [Process completed]
    to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the last message you saw. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

  • Out of memory error when encoding hd video

    I've been using various versions of premiere elements over the past few years. It's been mostly a torturous process. I tried sony vegas but didn't like it. about 3 months ago i got a Rain Venturi, Intel xeon 3.07 Ghz, windows 7 pro 64 bit, and upgraded the memory to 24gb. things got better but Premiere 9 was still crashing!! especially when adding titles.  I changed the video card to a quadro 4000 and for the first time elements worked. It was actually enjoyable editing!  My movies are hd about 8-14 min. in length some for saving to my computer. ocasionally i may throw one up on you-tube. they have about 25-30 cuts, some transitions and titles. Last week, while saving a video it started out fine until it get down to 99% complete - 5 sec. remaining and it would hang there for an hour or two until done.  Today I tried saving a video and I keep getting "Windows media is out of memory. The operation failed" message. I tried restarting Premiere and changing the keyframe interval to 2 sec, but no change.  Anyone know what is going on here? How could I be out of memory? I read about out of memory messages in the lightroom forum and it being a bug in the software- is that what's happening here? Last month it worked fine now it doesn't?  Am I better off with premiere pro?  I'm just about fed up with elements and am thinking of trying edius neo3? Thank you for reading...

    Bill and Steve- first off thank you both for taking the time to reply to my problem.  Steve I will now render on a regular basis. Bill what you sent me was very informative and I'll admit there were portions of it that i didn't understand and need to look closer but I did do some disk ceanups etc. I tried many different things trying to figure out what was going on here. It just didn't make any sense that I would be out of memory. And things were working fine up till a few days ago.  Anyway, there was some multiple titles on video tracks 2 and 3 that I though might be causing the hang-ups so I eliminated that and tried to save again.
    I walked away figuring it would take several hours to save this 14 min. video. When I returned I had a new error message- "If writing to a remote page file location make sure the target location is available"  What!  I checked and sure enough the drive I was saving to was dead ( an external USB2 disk drive, 7200 rpm about 60% free)  Anyway I plugged in a new lacie USB3 drive and the video rendered and saved ( faster then ever!) Tried saving another video and everything was smooth again and fast! So it seems that somehow this drive was failing or slowing down over the last few days?? and that was causing the problem? (but the error message - "windows media is out of memory" was deceiving).  Now that I think about it maybe the disk cleanup I performed over the weekend pushed the drive over the edge? anyway what a relief - but of course I didn't back the drive up on a regular basis so who knows what I lost! so what I learned is keep the disks clean and back-up often.   Thanks again.

  • CS2: "Out of Memory"

    Would anyone happen to know what might possibly be causing this?
    Vista Premium
    IDCS2
    3+ GB RAM
    (Yes, Bob, I know CS2 is not supported on Vista.)
    Recently ID has been producing this error message. It pops up when I leave for an hour or so, leaving ID up with one or more files open. Not large files; not heavy with graphics. System memory is fine, with lots of elbow room. But when I return to my desk ID is displaying this tiny dialogue of "Out of Memory" and is almost crashed, as if some background process has been running in an endless loop.
    Never saw this problem before. Admittedly, I have stopped shutting off my computer at night (putting it to sleep, instead), but just this morning rebooted.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    There's memory, and memory.
    There's RAM which is what you see when you select "About this Mac" under the apple in the upper left corner of the screen. For example, on my computer it says 1.5GB SDRAM. This is for very short term usage and the more you have the faster programs will run, and the more programs you can have open.
    Many programs also use hard drive space for temporary files, and I believe the ones you are using are particularly demanding. OSX itself needs a lot of hard drive space too for its temporary files. A rule of thumb is to always leave 15-20% of the hard drive free for these files. In your case since you are also using programs that needs lots of temporary space free I'd always make sure you have 10+ GB free at all times, maybe more.

  • Why does the iPad 2 run out of memory

    Why does the iPad 2 run out of memory?

    First ...read deggie's response. Makes sense - even a computer running a large amount of RAM can run short on memory depending upon the operation you are performing so sometimes you have to do what is available to "clear" the memory.
    You can ...close apps and restart the iPad on occasion. You close apps by double tapping the home button to bring up your recent apps in the multitasking tray. Tap and hold down on any of the icons until they all begin to wiggle. Then tap the minus signs in the corner of the apps to close them. Close all of your apps in that area. Also take note of how many apps are down there. That may have something to do with why the iPad is running out of memory. Tap the home button twice to return to the home screen. Then restart your iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and slide to shut off. To power up, hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    If you do this once in a while, it may make a difference in how your iPad performs. In any event, it will not hurt anything.

  • Acrobat XI Pro "Out of Memory" error after Office 2010 install

    Good Afternoon,
    We recently pushed Office 2010 to our users and are now getting reports of previous installs of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro no longer working but throwing "Out of Memory" errors.
    We are in a Windows XP environment. All machines are HP 8440p/6930p/6910 with the same Service pack level (3) and all up to date on security patches.
    All machines are running Office 2010 SP1.
    All machines have 2GB or 4GB of RAM (Only 3.25GB recognized as we are a 32bit OS environment).
    All machines have adequate free space (ranging from 50gb to 200gb of free space).
    All machines are set to 4096mb initial page file size with 8192mb maximum page file size.
    All machines with Acrobat XI Pro *DO NOT* have Reader XI installed alongside. If Reader is installed, it is Reader 10.1 or higher.
    The following troubleshooting steps have been taken:
    Verify page file size (4096mb - 8192mb).
    Deleted local user and Windows temp files (%temp% and c:\WINDOWS\Temp both emptied).
    Repair on Adobe Acrobat XI Pro install. No change.
    Uninstall Acrobat Pro XI, reboot, re-install. No change.
    Uninstall Acrobat Pro XI Pro along with *ALL* other Adobe applications presently installed (Flash Player, Air), delete all Adobe folders and files found in a full search of the C drive, delete all orphaned Registry entries for all Adobe products, re-empty all temp folders, reboot.
    Re-install Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. No change.
    Disable enhanced security in Acrobat XI Pro. No change.
    Renamed Acrobat XI's plug_ins folder to plug_ins.old.
    You *can* get Acrobat to open once this is done but when you attempt to edit a file or enter data into a form, you get the message, "The "Updater" plug-in has been removed. Please re-install Acrobat to continue viewing the current file."
    A repair on the Office 2010 install and re-installing Office 2010 also had no effect.
    At this point, short of re-imaging the machines (which is *not* an option), we are stumped.
    We have not yet tried rolling back a user to Office 2007 as the upgrade initiative is enterprise-wide and rolling back would not be considered a solution.
    Anyone have any ideas beyond what has been tried so far?

    As mentioned, the TEMP folder is typically the problem. MS limits the size of this folder and you have 2 choices: 1. empty it or 2. increase the size limit. I am not positive this is the issue, but it does crop up at times. It does not matter how big your harddrive is, it is a matter of the amount of space that MS has allocated for virtual memory. I am surprised that there is an issue with 64GB of RAM, but MS is real good at letting you know you can't have it all for use because you might want to open up something else. That is why a lot of big packages turn off some of the limits of Windows or use Linux.

  • IMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB, Extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since migration from Mountain Lion to Mavericks

    Dear Apple Support Community.
    As mentioned by a number of users reporting the same problem, my 2009 iMac CPU3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, has become extremely slow and repeatedly "out of Memory" since it was migrated from Mountain Lion to Mavericks (OS 10.9 then OS 10.9.1).
    I have already run CleanMyMac, deleted 5GB of useless stuffs, which did not translate into any improvement. Following the advices collected in other Apple Support Community threads, I have applied EtreCheck the outcome of which is provided below.
    For information, I have also upgraded my 2011 MacBook CPU2.3 GHz Core i7, 8GB which became only a bit slower than before, sometimes freezing which it almost never did before. However, I am used to the fact that Mac get usually slower and more prompt fo freeze after upgrading to a more recent OS.
    Both my 2009 iMac and my 2011 MacBook have F-Secure installed. So the problem with the 2009 IMac is unlikly to be due to the presence of F-Secure. Interestingly, the few abnormalities found by Etrecheck were exacly identical before I ran CleanMyMac. There are two more findings (mentioned below) since I ran CleanMyMac on the 2009 iMac, which again didn't improve the problem.
    So please find below the details of the EtreCheck experience and some additional measurements made with iStat while running EtreCheck:

    Practically:
    The iMac can work slowly with only one software e.g. either Mail or Safari or Firefox, but still the below "out of Memory" message occurs about every 3 minutes.
    Aperture has becomre to slow to be useable
    If trying to write a mail (with Mail) while Safari or Firefox is open, then the "out of Memory" message occurs about every 20 seconds so I need to check on "Resume" several times per minute.
    Conclusions
    From the above, unless anyone in the Apple Support Community proves to be able to identify a specific problem leading to a way to find a cure, I tend to conclude that Mavericks is not suitable for computers operating with a Core 2 Duo CPU even with a 8GB of RAM.
    Unless I missed something, I did not see any warning from Apple Computer Inc. informing their customers they should refrain from upgrading Core 2 Duo Computers.
    The only solution I see so far is to downgrade from Mavericks to Mountain Lion. And the Apple Support Community would confirm that it is the only solution, I would appreciate to get your guidance on how to proceed.
    Intended action plan
    Migrate the above 2009 iMac to a 2014 Mac Mini Server operating on Mavericks to ensure that no data may be lost while downgrading to Montain Lion.
    Provided the above downgrading operation is successful, assign this 2009 iMac to partial retirement e.g. Mail, Skype, iTunes  and DVD player.
    In advance, I would like to thank the Apple Community for helping me either i) finding a cure to the problem, ii) or confirming that Mavericks cannot operate properly on Core 2 Duo computers, iii) and in such a case, guiding me on how to downgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Yours sincerely
    Core

    ... what anti-virus would you recommend using?
    Use what is already included with OS X. It already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
    A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
    Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
    Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
    Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
    Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
    Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
    Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
    Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
    Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
    Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
    Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
    Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
    Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
    Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
    Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
    Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
    If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
    Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
    The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
    OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
    Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
    If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
    Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
    Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
    Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.
