Gethostbyname can't find Windows hosts on network?

Hi,
(OS X 10.4.8 + all latest updates)
Should gethostbyname be able to resolve Windows host names?
I'm writing a command line tool that uses gethostbyname - internet hosts get resolved e.g. www.apple.com, as do local Mac hosts. But gethostbyname can't find Windows hosts. Ping and other network utilities also have the same problem, so I 'm guessing it's not just me!
I have Windows Sharing turned on, and I can mount Windows shares using the host name.
Am I expecting too much here? Or is there some configuration I'm just not setting somewhere?
Thanks for any help.

Yes - it's pretty easy - just have to enter a domain name and DNS server IP address in the DHCP configuration...
From page 40 of http://www.apple.com/server/pdfs/Network_Services.pdf
<pre>If you are using Mac OS X Server as your DHCP Server:
1 In Server Settings, click the Network tab, click DHCP/NetBoot, and choose Configure
DHCP/NetBoot.
2 On the Subnet tab, select the subnet on the built-in Ethernet port and click Edit.
3 In the General tab, enter the following information:
Start: 10.0.1.3
End: 10.0.1.254
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 10.0.1.1
4 Click the DNS tab and enter the following information:
Default Domain: example.com
DNS Servers: 10.0.1.2
5 Click the Save button and log out of Server Settings. </pre>

If you can't download, go to Network control panel and check your settings there, look to see if there is more than one interface listed. And turn off "Auto-proxy setting" and see if that helps, it does in half the cases.
The only thing really needed would be a small Apple Software Update for Windows program to pull the drivers down while running Windows. Just that one program, which could update itself as happen with 2.0 and 2.1 version.
As it is, downloads can take 8 hrs for a tiny 620MB package. Strange. True. Been like this.

  • MBP can't find one specific wifi network.

The hotel where I live offers free wifi (The Cloud) and for months I've been using with full signal.
Suddenly my MBP (mid 2010) was unable to find this network.
My iPad and my iPhone (and friend's devices) are still connecting at any time with perfect full signal.
I've tried holding alt+cmd+P+R at boot to reset PRAM and NVRAM but it still can't find that specif wifi network.

Update: after another NVRAM and PRAM reset (alt+cmd+P+R) the wifi network shows up but I'm still unable to connect to it. When selected I've got a message of "connection timeout occurred" and the network disappears again.

I can't see any reason that you would need it... Just let it create it's own connection.

  • New iMac can't find photosmart 2610 over network -- HELP

Just got a new iMac 24" 2.8gig with Leopard. Most of the setup went fine, but the computer steadfastly refuses to see my printer over the wireless network. It is an HP Photosmart 2610.
I have used the same printer wirelessly with a MacBook Pro with no problem -- it found it right away, though that was with Tiger (it still worked after it was upgraded to Leopard). It also works great with 3 Windows WP PC's, two wirelessly and one via ethernet.
My Router is a Cisco 800 series and I use a Cisco WAP. The iMac had no problem connecting to the WAP and Internet.
The core problem is the iMac doesn't acknowledge that the printer exists. It doesn't find it automatically and when I direct it to the correct IP is still doesn't find it. Also, Leopard doesn't seem to have the driver for it. When I search for drivers from the pull-down after entering the IP I get a bizillion HP options including many Photosmart's. But the lowest model # without a letter in front of it is the 3300.
I then tried downloading the dirver from HP. It said it installed successfully but still didn't show the driver from the pull-down. When I tried used "other" and directing it straight to the driver it would act like nothing happened and come back to the same pull-down without the 2610 as a choice. I also tried installing HP's entire all-in-one software suite for 10.5. It installed sucessfully but also doesn't see the printer.
I tried temporarily moving the iMac and connecting it to the 2610 via USB. It suddenly found it no problem -- both the iMac software and the HP software. And it worked fine... The moment it was back via network, it doesn't find it despite it still working fine from every other device in the household.
Not sure what there is left to try. It is not an option to permanently have it connected by USB. I spoke with HP and they say that because it works from every other device. They say it is an Apple issue. Apple says it must be an HP driver issue points me back to HP. So I am left in limbo with no functional printing capacity.
I've tried searching the Internet for any reports on this but can't find them. Others seem to be successfully using the 2610, though it is unclear if others were using it via the Network.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am beginning to wonder if HP ceased supporting the network functionality in their 10.5 driver update but I can't get an answer on this.
    Thanks.

To be specific, since the Apple Printers and Faxes function does not find it in the "Default" list, I select "IP" and then enter the valid IP address that I know to be for the printer. I have tested it multiple times from other devices to confirm the IP address and even printed a network diagnostics page from the printer to confirm it. I even had someone else review it for typos just to cross every base...
It then accepts it as a "valid" IP address and assigns it a "Generic Postscript Printer." I then chose the pull down for "other" drivers. I just checked again. There is no driver called "HP IP". There are hundreds of HP drivers those. I am looking for the HP Photosmart 2600 series. But the lowest series they list is the HP Photosmart 3100 series.
Again, I have covered all the bases I can think of. The Apple site lists the 2600 series as an included driver in Leopard but it isn't showing up. The HP site lists the 2610 as "Leopard ready." I have downloaded and run the OX 10.5 HP 2600 series driver executable from HP and it says it was successful (tried several times). I also downloaded and installed the entire stupid 400-and-something MB software "all-in-one" software suite for the 2600 series from HP. You can run its own setup program indpependent of the Apple one and it doesn't find it either. When you enter the IP is says it found no printer and refuses to continue the setup. I have turned the printer on and off many times and checked all the connections. I have confirmed that the other PC's in the household are in fact seeing it at that IP...
I have spoken with Apple Tech Support ("it must be an HP driver issue, sorry") and HP tech support ("it must be a problem with your Mac because it works for others... but perhaps we can sell you a new printer that should work better" (no kidding, they actually tried to do this!).
On principle (and practical) grouns I am reluncant to get a new printer when the one I have works perfectly well for everything accept this Mac. But I am totally out of options unless someone can help.

  • My iPad can't find my specific Wifi network

    Hello,
About two days ago while on my iPad, my wifi connection suddenly dropped from my network. I didn't think much of it because my room is far from my router, so I went downstairs and tried to connect. However, my iPad couldn't find my wifi network. It showed all the other networks around my house that it normally does, but not mine, I thought my router may have possibly shut off, but my iPhone, computers, and Xbox all connected fine. I tried restarting the iPad, resetting network settings, turning airplane mode on and off, restarting the iPad while airplane mode was on... nothing. I restarted my router several times, nothing.
I'm not sure what the issue is, as again it is specifically my wifi network that the iPad can't find, even though there's 5 iPhones, one mac, one laptop, 2 Xbox's, and 2 other iPads that can all connect to my wifi without a hitch. Is this some sort of known issue with the iPad? It's an iPad 2, by the way. Or do I have to take it in to a store?
    Thanks.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at
    http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • HT4796 Mac can't find Window XP computer

The Migration Assistant is open on a Windows XP computer and "waiting for your Mac to connect", and the Mac is searching but they can't find each other.  What should I do to help them?  Both are on the same ethernet.

Thank you! That information was definitely helpful.
I haven't tried since my post to get our printer to work (ended up sending my doc to Staples, in the interest of time, and haven't had to print anything since).
Anyway, this morning I replaced our ink and tried printing something. It still wasn't working (but this time, all it said was the printer wasn't connected). I reconnected the printer to the network, then turned it off, restarted our computer, and once the computer was back up, I turned the printer back on.
The printer appeared in our network, again, and my printing job was successful. Yay! I LOVE when technology works. =)

  • Can't find any PCs on network

I'm trying to share files and a printer that is connected to a desktop PC running Vista. In the finder window I can't find the PC on the network on the side bar of the finder window, and on the Vista PC I can't find the Mac in the network devices window. All firewalls are down, printer sharing is on in Vista and File sharing and incoming connections are set up on the Mac. Both computers are set to the same workgroup, "MSHOME". The mac is running Mac OS 10.6.3 which is the latest update right now I think. Could anyone help me please, it would be a lot easier to print wirelessly without having to connect my mac to the printer all the time.

Did you read the Apple document Mac OS X: How to manually add a Windows shared printer and follow the steps?
Plus I found instructions (with pictures) for File Sharing: Snow Leopard And Windows that might help with Vista file sharing.

  • Can not find windows sever 2003 file sever on a windows 8 pro laptop

I can not find my windows sever 2003 file sever on my windows 8 pro laptop. I have tried over wireless and over ethernet. can some one please help me!

    Hi,
Assuming this Windows 8 Enterprise machine isn't locked down with Group Policy.
This type of problem usually requires that you change the lanman server parameters in order to get Windows 8 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 8 machines that needs to connect to the server.
Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy
    Local Policies - Security Options
Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only
Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
    Disable Require 128-bit encryption
Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

    Please help.
    DeathNote
    iMac 20' inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If reinstalling the current update doesn't work, perhaps that is because the update was completed properly, but in the process has messed up configuration settings files and preferences. If you can't find any problems in your settings through System Preferences, then there are probably hidden errors in the .plist files and the way to correct that is by manually wiping out all your network settings files and redoing everything in Network preferences may be a quicker fix than brain surgery. Try deleting these files, then reboot and redo your network settings appropriately..
These are all in the folder /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
Note, this will wipe out all network-related settings, and force the OS to rebuild default preference settings files for the built-in network devices. This is sometimes the only thing that will clear up bizarre networking issues, but generally speaking, it works well.. just don't forget to thoroughly note all your proper network settings including wireless network passwords and all that before you perform this house cleaning for reference as a precaution.

  • Computer can not find 6310 scanner on network

6310 all in one working fine both printing and scanning then all of a sudden Photo smart can not find the scanner on the network. The printer continues to work fine. How can I get both of my network computers to fing the scanner ?

Sorry for not getting back. I tried all the suggestions and could not see the server. It was not showing up in the ipconfig /all except when I queried at the server. I could not get a successful ping from the client either.
However, a little digging, and some conversations with prior admins of the domain, I have determined there was no real domain. The 2003 server was there in name only, the client pc's were just doing their own thing and just using shared folders in the server.
The domain controller was a Qwest (telephone company internet) modem and still is because the guy who programed it will not give me the password until we can meet and he can see what I am trying to do --  go figure that one.
However, all that being said I was able to change one client pc's hosts file and add the server static ip and name and then like magic the "//server2012/connect" worked just as advertised. So I connect that pc, a user for it and the server
is acting just as it should for that pc, the old server and itself under the right domain name.
I still can not get to the outside world with remote web connect as the Qwest Modem is blocking the connection; my guess is the right ports are not forwarded. My solution seems to be getting access to the modem and transferring the DNS, and probably the
DHCP, control from it to the server 2012.
So I appreciate the help so far, but I feel I can not really ask for more help until I get control of the whole network and perform some more diagnostics. Should I close this question and open a new one in the future when I have one?
Thanks for all the input so far, though, Ed
