Getting 460 kbps only in 3g network with C5 - 00 v...

Nokia C5 - 00 while connecting to internet via ovi suite in 3g network shows "connected in 460kbps via OTA" though while browsing in mobile I am getting 250 - 280 kbps download speed but while connected via ovi suite I am only getting 60 70 kbps download speed..

460 kbps is the maximum that you can reach the actual speed will also depend on how much traffic there is. remember there are other devices using the same network. I don't think your phone will ever be able to reach and keep the maximum speed

Getting external drive only to spin-up with timemachine

Hi. I'm using TimeMachineEditor to schedule my backups as every hour is annoying. Even more annoying is that my external drive spins up every time I sit down. So, my question: how can get my external drive to spin-up only when TimeMachine wants to do a backup. It seems unnecessary that it spins all the time otherwise.

Nope, that doesn't make any difference. I had already tried that one out... Plus, it would not be a full solution because one needs Spotlight to search for files in Time Machine's backups (it's one of its features)... From what I can see now, it's really a OS X / Finder problem or something related to Time Machine. The problem started to manifest itself when the backup disk became relatively full (I have still some 60+ GB left, though) and/or with the latest upgrade to 10.5.2. And it seems to get worse: first the external HD spun up every 15 minutes, now every 8... I just wish somebody knew how to find out what program or process causes the IORegistry log to be updated at exactly the time when the backup disk wakes up - every 8 minutes.

Setting up network with newer and older AirPort Extremes

Okay, I thought this was going to be so simple. I have a newer (like a year old - square) Airport Extreme that I have three computers wirelessly hooked up to in the house. Great... so now, I want to hook up the old iMac in my son's room that doesn't have a wireless card to the network. It is too far away to use the ethernet cable into the back of my newer Airport Extreme station so I figured I'd dust off the old saucer type base station, plug the ethernet cable into that in my son's room and then just easily get the old base station to network with the newer one wirelessly.
Not so easy. The newer one has no reference how to make a network with other base stations whatsoever and the old book describes how to with the Airport Admin Utility which is not available to the newer version, just Airport Utility and it does not have the WDA options listed. I tried to extend the network and then Doh! The whole network disappeared.
Is this a compatibility issue with the older and newer base stations? Would it just be easier to put in a wireless card to my very old iMac, if that's even possible? Has anyone successfully networked an old and new base station together? If so how?

Welcome to the discussions!
When you have an older "g" device (the flying saucer) and a newer "n" device (the square one) in order for them to communicate using wireless only, you must configure both of them in what is known as WDS configuration.
This is a quite tricky setup for most users. The best set of instructions that I've seen for this comes from expert user Tesserax in this thread:

If you elect to try this type of setup, you will probably need to hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Wireless Mode selection box to get the WDS option to appear. (My guess here is that Apple "hides" it because it slows down the network substantially). But, it's the only way to do what you want to accomplish with and old and new device.
Other options would include the wireless card you mentioned for the iMac. Even better might be a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. One adapter goes near the AirPort Extreme and the other near the iMac. The AC wiring in your home transmits the ethernet signal of the powerline. Works great, almost no configuration required and better than wireless in many cases.

I have been trying for hours to extend my Extreme Gen 5 network with an Express Gen 2. But no matter what I do or try, it doesn't work. What does happen is my internet gets blocked somehow when the Express is online and looks like it's set up perfect and 'green' - but no internet connection for anything even though the Extreme is green and the modem is good. Once I disconnect the Express, everything is good again.
I've tried LAN, WAN, though a switch, direct connect, Extreme set to Extend the network, the Express set to be an extension. Most of the time I get an error trying to update the Express. But when it seems to be set up perfect, the entire house can't get to the internet. Just when it looks right, it is so wrong.
If anyone can give me exact steps (e.g., "...from the Base Station menu, select the Restore Default Setting option" vice "...just restore the defaults..."), I would greatly appreciate it. I'm left to the conclusion that the Express is faulty. I've been using Airport Utility 6.2 from Mountain Lion on one computer and Airport Utility 5.6.1 from Snow Leopard on another computer (the latter give more control while the former just want you to 'forget' the Express).

I finally got it working. I was trying to set it up ethernet. My biggest mistake was when the new Express came on, I did not select 'Continue' - I went straight to manual thinking that I would get the most setup options in manual mode. So everything I initially tried always resulted in 'wireless'. Even when I would update or restore default settings, the Express would not completely restart. Or sometimes I would get an error. So most of the time I had to unplug it. So when it came back up, none of my changes were retained. But there were a lot of times when everything was green and appeared to be fine. But anytime the ethernet cable was plugged in, no more internet.
So here's the weird part. When I finally tried 'continue' (vice manual), I would get 4 options. One would be 'ethernet' extended. So I would select it, it gave me green lights, all looked good, and still the same problem. This is when I got frustrated. I thought I had exhausted all possible combinations.
But somehow when trying continue again after another restore, I only got 3 options. One was the same ethernet extended option (can't remember what the missing 4th one was). And this time it worked - it gave me the big green circle with the checkmark saying it was successful. I don't know what I did different, but I know now that it won't work if 4 options come up to choose from. It will work if only 3 options come up. And success if only verified by the big checkmark. Had anyone anywhere said the checkmark declaring success is validation, then maybe I wouldn't have gone down so many rabbit holes thinking it should have been successful.
As for which Airport Utility I prefer, 6.2 looks nice, but it would just ignore the Express and would want me to 'forget' it and would not let me edit it. Airport Utility 5.6.1 was the one that I ended up using the most and finally had success with. It still strikes me as odd that there is no manually way to pick ethernet, it can only be choosen following a 'restore defaults', and only from the 3-option list (the 4-option list had the same ethernet choice, but it no worky).

Using Airport 5.6.1
1) Restore Defaults from Base Station menu
2) Following restart, Select Continue
3) Of the 3 option presented, select 'ethernet.... extend network...'
- if 4 options are present, may not work
4) Wait for the green circle with the big white checkmark.
5) Connected Express to the switch where a cable went to other end of house - works.
Dead-zone went from 2mbps to 24mbps.
I probably spent 4 hours chasing my tail in anger. The correct way took about 5 minutes total.

Because GPS has nothing to do with WiFi, cellular signals, or data of any sort. GPS is implemented by signals sent by satellites that are received by GPS receivers. If you have WiFi or cellular data turned on this can improve the accuracy of GPS, because the GPS receiver can then use the known location of cell towers and WiFi networks to refine the GPS location. GPS by itself has an accuracy of 10 meters, or about 34 feet. Using the additional information from WiFi and cellular data this can be brought down to 3 meters (10 feet). This mode is called Augmented GPS, or A-GPS.

Did another window open with the pasted information? If so, try hitting "enter/return" key and "delete" key at the same time. That should get rid of the current action on the ical, the extra window should go bye-bye, and all should be fine with the world.

You log into the App store using the same Apple ID you used to set the computer up, verify that none of your apps are hidden and that they have all be accepted and then download and install the update

My mac pro crashed. Apple genius people said to reinstall snow leopard. I did and it failed to start after i installed. I started with the power button, tried to install upgrades, and now I get only a grey screen with spining wheel.

I reinstalled snow leopard (10.6.3) over 10.6.8 because apple genious people said I had problems with my library files after a time capsule crash. I reinstalled but when done I got only a blue screen. I restarted with the power button and tried to insall 10.6 combined upgrades. I got an error message that it could not install because of an error. When I powered down and tried to restart, I get only a grey screen. My optical drive does not open so I can't restart from another source.

Restart, holding down the mouse button. That should eject the disc. Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC. Then, pop in the install disc, restart with it in again, select your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. select the boot volume and repair the disk.

iTunes only syncs with one computer/library at a time.
If you have failed to maintain a backup or no longer have the old computer, you may be out of luck.
iTunes purchases can be transfered from the iDevice. Connect the device, do NOT sync. Select File > Transfer Purchases.
This will only transfer iTunes purchases. All other media will not transfer and will be wiped from the device when it is synced with a new computer/library.

Retail Leopard disc looks like this;
(The disc itself has the same logo). If the one you've got is grey it simply won't work.
Given the retail and second hand prices of Leopard (usually some on Amazon MP), you'll probably find it cheaper to go directly to Snow Leopard, although there could be software updates and printer driver problems that could nullify the difference.
