Getting 50-70kb/s download speeds with Infinity

So as the subject suggests, getting really dreadful speeds doing anything on the internet using BT Infinity over the wifi. Tried talking to support been going backwards and forwards on the issue.
(I live in a shared house less than 5 meters above where the hub is downstairs. sharing with 3 other people who occasionally use the wifi as well.)
Being able to use an ethernet cable wouldn't be an option due to circumstances.
Now waiting for 'Tech support Level 2' to review the case.
Before the speeds dropped to this much of a low I was getting roughly 400-500kb/s downloads..
Also, as i am not the landlord, and have no means of altering the settings in the hub options i'm guessing my options are rather limited.
Any suggestions in the meantime?

If you do a factory reset this will allow you to enter the homehub management pages using the admin password which is found on the homehub label. You would not need to ask the landlord for the password, it would however clear any password that the landlord had put into it which he might not be happy with.

The most likely problem, if a reset doesn't help is that there is wireless interference causing the slow down.
Download a Wifi Analyser app for you smartphone if you have one or use the free version of inSSider from forum member Keith Beddoe's website here
http://forumhelp.dyndns.info/software/insidder.zip
It will show you the wireless channels and which one the Homehub is on. You want to find the channel with the least congestion, ie. least number of users. Once you have that you need to change the homehub onto that channel. The other option is to try each channel in tirn until you find the one that is giving you the best results. Channel 12 or 13 id often found to be the least congested with the least overlapping channels.
See link how to change channel on homehub

  • Terrible download speed with Infinity 2 (less than...

I was a relatively early adopter of BT infinity.  When I first signup I recieved a consistent 70mbps+ down 80mbps up.
Over the last few months this has dropped to around 40mbps down and 12mbps up.
I posted here regarding the issue, contacted BT, and even Emailed the tech support guys recommended here on this very forum.
Unfortunately nothing improved, however since 40mbps down was okay for almost everything I needed to do I decided to leave it.
Now however, the situation has become dire.  For the last month my download speed has been consistently less than 4mbps with my upload speed being 2-3x as fast!
The BT speedtester refuses to complete due to the test taking too long. However I have managed to get a screenshot from speedtest.net.
To make matters worse, webpages down't always seem to complete, with many requests eventually timing out.
I am at a complete loss and would like some advice on where to go from here.  I have for all intents and purposes lost faith in the standard BT customer service having spent hours on the phone with them before when my speed dropped to 40mbps a few months ago.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Hi
I also am having the exact same issue. I am on the phone now and they are telling me now that is all my line can handle.
This is disgusting, the service is disgusting, cannot get an engineer out. For over 10 months i could get 60mbps steady downloads now i can't
    even stream a youtube video!!
even though i have another infinity 2 line in the downstairs living room getting 65mbps steady downloads from the same exchange.

  • Very slow download speeds with ATT U-Verse

    Hello,
Experiencing very slow download speeds with Macbook Pro 2011, on Lion,  and ATT UVerse Max, which should allow for an avg. 11-12 MBPS speed. Instead, I get a fluctuating 60-370 kbps speed. I am not experiencing this problem on my Windows machines (Laptop running Windows 7 and Desktop on XP), it is only affecting the Macbook pro. I wonder if this issue is a known problem with ATT U-Verse and Macs, I spent hours yesterday with their support online and they couldn't help me, stating that from their side all settings were OK; the first representative from ATT re-booted the router remotely and that seemed to work for about 10 minutes, and then it went back to a crawling speed...
    Any suggestions welcome!
    Thanks

Do you have QOS enabled in your router? Did you try plugging the win7 laptop directly and check the speed?

  • Improve Download Speed with Mobile Wireless Card

I just purchased a GT MAX 3.6 Express LaptopConnect Card from AT&T to allow mobile internet access. While I can connect to the internet, the speed is very slow (I'm getting 3 of 7 bars). I understand there might be a Mac "booster" I can purchase. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Or, do you know how I can improve my download speeds with a wireless card? Thanks kindly for your help on this...

I received M Q today. To my surprise, there is no way to connect M Q to PB or any computer. I called Verizon and talked with their data connect department. They confirmed that M Q cannot be used as a modem The only device that will is Treo 700p. I am returning the unit by FedEx today. Treo is xpensive. So I will downgrade from MBP to PB G4 15" and use Verizon's Broadband Wireless PCMCIA card

  • Why am I just getting 0.5Mbit/s download speed?

We have had BT phone and broadband (BT Total Broadband) services for a few years in our household. On broadband, I used to get about 2-4Mbit/s download speed. 1 year ago, this suddenly dropped to about 0.5Mbit/s. For the last year I've been using my internet with a measly max. of 60kbps. I really don't know why this has happened, but it is incredibly frustrating. Can't really use YouTube or iPlayer.
I went on my BT Home Hub settings and found that the downstream is 572 kbps, which corresponds to the download speed I get. Before discovering this, I did a speed test using my test socket but got the same result. A speed test done today using BT diagnostics gives me 0.48Mb download and 0.57Mb upload.
But what's going on? Why is this so? Why did it suddenly drop? What can I do about it? I remember being on 10Mbit/s with Virgin a few years ago, that was more like it. Any assistance would be kindly appreciated.

  • Very slow download speed with Airport Express

    Hi.
I've recently experienced painfully slow downlink (download) speed using Airport Express.
    My WiFi configuration:
    - main router: WRT54G connected to my provider (speed limit: 4Mbit up/down link),
    - AirPort Express with WiFi N and Airtunes hooked up to stereo in living room,
    - AirPort Express WiFi G and Airtunes connected to stereo on bedroom.
Second Airport is currently not used to simplify tests and description of my problem.
The problem: when connecting from MacBook to Airport Express I can't reach more than approx. 512kbit downloading from internet, usually even 300kbit, while uplink reaches easily 2.5Mbit (limited probably by my network provider). While connected to WRT54G I can get 2.5 up to 4Mbit downlink, same when using cable directly plugged in to WRT54G.
I tried changing channels, switching different options in Airport with no effect - still getting pathetic download speeds. Even worse - browsing experience is awful, with frequent slowdowns, etc.
I tried different encryption methods, and seems like only switching it off at all (unprotected network) seems to let my Airport work on full speed (2.5Mbits symmetrically up/down, up to 4Mbits - provider speed limit) - which is unacceptable, I refuse to set up and use unprotected network at home.
Problem is clearly in Airport or in interaction between Airport and Macbook. I've just ran out of ideas - can you help me?

I can't offer any help with your problem except for the fact that mine has recently done the exact same thing. It's ridiculous, for months and months it was extremely fast and then all of a sudden it takes 20 minutes to open a simple browser page. Something is definitely wrong with the airport because all other wireless internet connections from other routers are as usual. \

  • Slooowww download speeds with new MacBook Air.

I recently replaced my old MacBook from 2007 with a new MacBook Air. Since I've gotten it I've had a series of frustruations. I hadn't even thought to check if it had an ethernet port or a cd drive. Because it has nither I've had to download versions of things I'd generally install via CD. My download speeds seem to be incredibly slow on this new MacBook Air, it took hours to download firefox. I feel like my older MacBook was much faster, I don't understand. I recently did a speed test (I have Comcast) for the MacBook Air and it came up with a 1mbps download speed. Is this an issue with the computer or with my modem (docis 3.0, cable) or router (standard belkin) or with Comcast? I'm pretty frustrutaed.
    Other questions:
I'd love to plug this directly into our cable modem, but I see that I need an adapter.
I'd also love to connect this to my iMac via thunderbolt cable and use use target disc mode to install some stuff.
I'd like to buy a plain thunderbolt cable to have for use with more modern computers, and adapters for use with this older/other stuff. Is there an adapter that lets me attach the thunderbolt cable to an ethernet wire so I can plug directly into the modem? Also, my imac has a firewire 800 port, not a thunderbolt port, so is there a thunderbolt to firewire 800 cable?
What would be the cheapest way of getting these cables and adapters, (links would be very appreciated!)?
    Thanks!

Yes. Take it back for a replacement. Take the computer with you so you can test the new one.

    Need some help.

  • Very slow download speeds with new laptop with windows seven- WRT160N Router

Just bought a new Laptop with windows 7 and  of course wireless.  Download speeds are horrible (0.2 mbs)  and upload speeds are normal for me ( 8mbs) Have a wrt160N  Wire less router.   Older laptop  and desktop work fine  with normal( around (8mbs) downloads and uploads.
    How do I fix this?

Do you have QOS enabled in your router? Did you try plugging the win7 laptop directly and check the speed?

  • Only getting 25% download speed with WRTU54G-TM Connected

Just noticed that my bandwidth has significantly decreased in the past 24 hours with my WRTU54G-TM connected.  I was doing some heavy downloading, so I'm not sure if the router has recently adjusted/limited the bandwidth to allow for adequate bandwidth for VOIP.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    With the WRTU54G-TM
    Without

It would/should only be limiting the speed if you're in a VOIP call.
Check the MTU setting and change it lower - see other threads on this in this section of the bulletin board.

  • Download speed with Apple TV way too Slow

I have Apple TV and with that I have Netflix.
I am able to watch Netflix but on a TV show that we have purchased the download is 2+ hours.  This is not acceptable.  How can it be fixed.  I have a fast connection to the internet - 30+ Mbps.  So I know that it is not my connection to the internet that is the issue.
What can be changed ??  I have the setting of video at 720 not 1080 as I know that will slow it down.  My wife is not happy and well it does not help with viewing pleasure.
    Please help.
    Thanks
FYI - it is the first gen Black Apple TV

There's a number of possibilities here.
In most cases the wireless transmission in the house is to blame.
You may be on a channel some other access point is using.  You'd need to do a site survey to pick the most open frequency.
Your router may just be tired.  After a while they just wear out and the wireless performance is the first to suffer.  I change them out all the time for people.
You may be using old technology.  802.11B and G are obsolete.  Consider getting a dual band router which would allow you to set the AppleTV on 5GHz (fast, open, seldom in use in the area).  This also means your other stuff in the house can run at top speed without taking bandwidth from the pipe used for the AppleTV (best seen in Airplay, where neither are really using the internet, just the WiFi).
Then there's the possibility that the service itself for Neftlix is busy or your internet provider is choking for one reason or another...

  • Slow download speeds with wired connection on a WRT1900AC.

Turning off media prioritization (in which I had my PlayStation 4 as the sole device listed) immediately fixed the problem.  New speed test results: 339Mbps down, 23Mbps up, and 29msec ping. Enabling media prioritization and setting maximum downstream at 350,000Kbps and repeating speed test: 233Mbps down, 23Mbps up, and 26msec ping.  Decreasing maximum downstream to 300,000Kbps and repeating speed test: 153Mbps down, 23Mbps up, and 27msec ping.  So something seems a bit strange with how media prioritization is working, and unfortunately the link you listed for reading about it returns a Page 404 Not Found error.

Is Media Prioritization enabled. Try disable and test: Media Prioritization:
    Enable Media Prioritization

  • Having problems with direct download speed with TC...

I don't know what kind of settings i tweaked that after i updated my TC, i noticed that watching youtube, direct downloads, and listening to the itunes radio seem to be very slow. Download rates have dropped significantly. When i listen to itunes rado, itunes would always be rebuffering stream every 5-10 seconds. Anyone know what could be the problem?

    Welcome to the discussions!
Download a utility like www.speakeasy.net or www.speedtest.net so you know what is happening on your network.
The first thing to try is to do a complete restart on your system. Power everything down for a few minutes. Then power up your modem first and let it run a few minutes, then power up your TC, and finally your computers.
    Any improvement?
If not, do you remember what settings you adjusted on your TC?
