Getting a HomeGroup shared printer to work with Lu...

Although I had no issues adding my 2520 to my HomeGroup network and sharing files, I just could not get it to add my Canon MP480 printer. This great guide from Steveh1 on the Microsoft forums sorted it out for me, I had tō use the MP490 driver but can now print from my 2520
OK, I figured out how to get this to work.  It's a total kluge, and it's been a problem with Windows for some time.  Guess they didn't fix it in Windows 8.
This problem has nothing to do with HomeGroups, and everything to do with the fact that the driver model is completely new in Windows 8.
I figured out the solution from this post:
http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/7527-networking-printer-attached-win-xp-pc-win-7-a.html
Users were having the same problem printing from a Windows 7 PC to a shared printer on an XP machine.  Turns out the same technique fixes this problem of trying to print from Windows 8 to a shared printer.
Here's what you do, step by step:
1) On the machine with the attached local printer, share it with a simple name (in my case I used "HL2140") (Windows Key | type "printers", click "Settings", choose "Devices and Printers, right-click on the printer you want to share, choose "Printer Properties", choose "Sharing", click "Change Sharing Options", click "Share this printer", type a Share name, click OK).  This creates a share in the form \\SHAREDPC\HL2140.
2) On your Surface RT ( or Lumia 2520) , add a printer using Advanced Printer Setup (Windows Key, type "advanced printer", click "Settings", click on "Advanced Printer Setup".
3) Even though Windows 8 may "find" your printer, click below where it says "The printer that I want isn't listed"
4) Select the 4th option, "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings" and click "Next"
5) Select "Create a new port:" , "Local Port", click "Next"
6) Enter the port name you created in Step 1 above.  In my case, \\SHAREDPC\HL2140.  Then click "OK"
7) Here's where the magic happens.  An "Add Printer" dialog comes up that lists the new Windows 8 "Class" drivers.  Select the manufacturer for your printer, then look at the "Class" driver names and pick the one that seems closest to your printer.  In my case, for the Brother HL-2140, I chose "Brother Laser Type1 Class Driver".  Then click "Next".
8) Type a useful printer name.  In my case, I typed "Brother HL-2140".  Click OK.
The printer is installed!  It worked for me.  If it doesn't work for you, you might need to try a different "Class" driver for your manufacturer.

Thanks for these step by step instructions. I got Lumia 2520 working with HP Photosmart 8150. It is a shared printer from my desktop machine. I didn't find exact match for the class driver, but I chose the closest one.

Any one know how to get the Kodak 5100 to work from air port on this Time Capsule. I have tried all the other things I have read but this thing will not print. I run a network diagnostics and it tells me server failed. And the way I feel Apple can take the Time Capsule back, so many problems took two days to get it up and running. Did Apple make this peice of junk.

i couldn't be happier with my TC, really.
+I have tried all the other things I have read but this thing will not print+
    well, what have you tried?
did you delete your printer from the printer list (- sign), and re-add it (+ sign)?
+so many problems took two days to get it up and running+
was the user error, or TC's fault? you got it working, so it doesn't sound like it was TC.

  • I cannot get my Epson R800 printer to work with Lion

I have updated to Lion and now I cannot print on my Epson stylus photo R800. Trying to add a printer goes out to find software only to tell me to go to Epson. Going to Epson only tells me that if there is no software then I already have it.
    Any ideas

I don't see my product listed on the Epson Mac OS X Lion Support page. Can I use my product with Mac OS X Lion?
    A:
If your product isn't listed in any of the drop-down lists on the Mac OS X Lion Support page, it is not currently compatible with Lion.
It's 5-10 years or thereabouts? I've had laser printers newer than that be rendered legacy obsolete and lack of drivers. Of course all my new scanners, printers are 10x faster and better, too. And my last Canon half the cost was in the ink! but great buy for $80. Refills though are $45+.

  • HT3669 Hi I have a Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W printer. This works with my Windows-based Toshiba laptop but not with my i-Mac. Can someone please advise me how I get the printer to work with my i-Mac? I have installed it but documents don't print. Thanks

Hi I have a Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W printer. This works with my Windows-based Toshiba laptop but not with my i-Mac. I have the latest (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) OS-X software.
I have installed the printer using 'System Preferences' on my i-Mac and it appears on the list of available printers but documents that I create just don't print.
Can someone please advise me how I get the Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W printer to work with my i-Mac?
    Thanks, John Lee

Looking at the Konica web site for the PagePro 1300W, I saw the following note.
Please note: This printer is designed to be used in computer operating systems running MS Windows only. Operating systems such as UNIX, Macintosh, or Linux are not supported nor do we have workaround drivers available. Older MS Windows versions, such as Windows 3.1/95/98[pre-SE] and NT 3.51/4.0, are not supported.
So KM are not going to help you. But the LinuxFoundation does provide a workaround that should allow you to print. Have a look at this web page. You will need to install all three packages as per the instructions from that page.

  • Is there a way I get can my Dell V305 printer to work with my Mac?

I "inherited" my son's Mac Book Pro but when I tried to hook it up to our printer, Dell V305, it wouldn't work.  I tried downloading the software from the Dell site, since we don't have the disks, but it wouldn't work.  Is there a way I can get our printer to work with the Mac?

I would start by contacting Dell's tech support to determine if the printer is compatible. They may then be able to suggest what printer driver to use on the Mac.

My Macbook Pro won't print with my HP Photosmart 7515. I get the following message, " Print file was not accepted" Printer does work with our PC?? Checked for software updates and are none. Talked with HP help and they say it's an Apple problem

I noticed that you said you uninstalled the printer, but you didn't mention resetting the print system.  Resetting the print system will reset the drivers the Mac has installed and make them work like they should.  Give this a try and see if it gets the printer working like it should.  The document below will expalin more about doing this.
Basic Printer Troubleshooting Steps for Mac
If that doesn't help, see if you are using the AirPrint driver, or the printers driver.  By default 10.8 uses the AirPrint driver if the printer supports it, so I'm betting that's the driver you're using.  If it is, try using the driver for the printer itself.  To do this, access Print and Scan.  Click the + sign to add a new printer.  Select the printer from the list.  Click the dropdown next to Use and select the 7515's driver.  Let me know what happens.

  • Can I get my HP F4500 wireless printer to work with my Ipad?

Can I get my HP F4500 Wireless Printer to work with my Ipad....It is an IOS 4.3.2

    Philip-
I don't see a 4500 HP printer on the list of AirPrint printers, so you will most likely need an alternate way to print to it.
One way is to use an iPad App such as Print n Share.  It has its own browser, mail, photo and text programs that can print to some non-AirPrint printers.  I don't know if it can print from within other iPad Apps.
Another way is to use a computer to share the printer as AirPrint over WiFi, using a program like Printopia for the Macintosh.  For a free solution, search the web for AirPrint Activator.
I recommend you try the free iPad App, HP iPrint Photo.

  • Cannot get printer to work with iMac

I cannot get my Epson printer to work with my iMac , It just keeps saying it cannot find printer.
All the other settings are correct , its just the server that fails. I have downloaded printer files ,

Need to use printer and scanner for my job, and this is driving me mad!!

It sounds like BT's hardware may have a firewall that's blocking more than it should.

  • Ricoh Aficio 2018 printer not working with 10.9.1.

Hi All. Please help. I am unable to get Ricoh Aficio 2018 printer to work. I am running 10.9.1.
I have got it working once by downloading the foomatic, ghostscript and pxl drivers, but we moved and I had to dismantle everything and now it won't work.  Last time we had a modem/router that the blue cable from the Ricoh was connected to, but this time we have a USB modem so the blue cable is connected straight into the iMac.
I have printed a config page from the Ricoh and see that DHCP is on, and it gives me the IP address, but when I go into system prefences in the iMac and try to add a printer with this IP address, it just doesn't work like last time.  I choose LPD as the protocol and search for the Rich Aficio 2018PXL option for the use, but still not working.
any ideas would be massively appreciated.
    thanks

I made those changes but strange thing is that the facsimile button lit up as red and I don't even use the fax function on this multifunction machine.
When this occurs with our Canon's it is due to the document feeder being unavailable for some reason, such as some other machine function is using the feeder. Other than that I'm not sure why this would occur.

I thought I would check with you about what I should set the 'delivery options' to.  If you choose on then there are 2 tabs - server 1 which is current 10.0.0.2 and server 2 which is 0.0.0.0.  should this be set to on?
Not really sure what this "delivery options" setting is for. Normally when I see that menu it is for what happens with the document after it is delivered.
That first server address sounds like a local router address. Maybe a left over from the previous network configuration? If I knew more about what this setting was meant to achieve then I may be able to answer better. I will see if I can find information from Ricoh.
    Shrunken wrote:
Also I checked in the 'about outlook' and the incoming server was different to what I had emailed to you.  so I changed it to what was in outlook.  I hope that is right?
Yes. It would be the correct approach to use the same settings in the copier as you have set in a working email client.
    Shrunken wrote:
Also, under scanner features/destination list settings there are two options:
    - destination list priority where you can choose either email or delivery server.  which should I choose here?
    - update server destination list.  when I choose this one, it tells me that it has failed.
I would think that you want email, as you are attempting to connect directly with the email server.
And I'm not sure what the update destination list is mean to do. You may have to contact Ricoh for help on this.
Just one more thing to note. Because you are connecting the Ricoh directly to the Mac via Ethernet cable, you will have to enable Internet Sharing on the Mac so the Ricoh can connect to the Internet and thus Bigpond. This setting is located in System Preferences > Sharing and you will need to set "Share your connection from:" to the USB modem and the "To computers using" to Ethernet.

  • I can't get my HP laserjet p1102w to work with airprint

    Hi!
So it seem's that I can't get my HP laserjet p1102w to work with airprint. I got it to send out it's own Wi-Fi signal, and i get in touch with that signal on my iPad 3. But when I wan't to print something out from Pages, then it says that it can't find any airprinters.
I tried to update the firmware several times, but it still doesn't work. Any suggestions to what I can do?

    Hey T-racer,
As a work-around you can also use the HP eprint method which is available with your printer. The application (HP Home & Biz) is available for free in the apple catalogue.
You can find more info on it here:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03128518&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en &product=4110396&tmp_track_link=ot_search
It shares many of the same capabilities of airprint but is a different program/feature.
If you have any questions, just ask!

  • How can I get an HP Deskjet 882C to work with Snow Leopard?

Is there a way to get our HP Deskjet 882C to work with Snow Leopard?  This printer is a workhorse, and even though it is so old, our budget and common sense say not to get rid of it.

Install the HPIJS package. This is an open source set of drivers for older printers.  HP dropped support for a whole lot of printers when Snow Leopard was developed.  These drivers fill the gap.
You will need to install three components - Ghostscript, Foomatic RIP and the hpijs package.  They are all on the HPIJS web page.  Once installed, restart your Mac, connect your printer.  You will probably need to go into System Preferences > Print & Fax to select the printer and set it as your default printer.  After that it works great.  And it also works on Lion.

  • Is there a way to get the Mendeley references manager to work with pages?

Is there a way to get the Mendeley references manager to work with pages?  If not, what is the best reference manager to use with Pages?  I hate "Endnote" and, while I like "Papers", it does not have much support for shared libraries (with collaborators--their Livfe option only permits 50 shared papers and does not work well) or synching a single library across multiple Macs (i.e. home+work).  I need a good reference manager that supports 1) synching across multiple Macs, 2)working with collaborators and 3) has no problem importing different reference styles.  I don't want to use Word or Endnote unless I absolutely must--Pages is much better for everything else I do.  This is for use in preparing scientific manuscripts and grant applications.  Thanks.

  • I would like to buy a HP printer that works with Windows 8 preview.

Understand that HP will not release drivers for existing printers until August at earliest and that is OK....I have 3 HP Laserjet 1020s that have been great and will buy a new HP printer if it will work now with Windows 8 preview.  Any suggestions or any fixes/patches for 1020 that work.  Also interested in any non-HP printers that work with Windows 8 preview?  Prefer HP but will buy first printer that works from any mfg. as I would like to give Windows 8 a real try.   Believe HP is missing boat by not putting a patch out for some of their printers as soon as possible as I am not the only HP user looking to buy any printer that works with Windows 8.

  • How do i get my dell v715w printer to work

How do I get my Dell V715 printer to work on my mac?

This solution seems to be working for me as well.
Also switched to using the Apple supplied "Image Capture Application" rather than the Dell All In One Scanner application in order to conduct wireless scanning. This seems to be working now also.
Note that for me, I had already installed the Dell drivers under OS 10.6, so they were present when I moved to 10.7. However, they just didn't work worth anything under 10.7. Sure, printing might work wirelessly, but scanning never did.
Was looking for a solution to this issue before my wife's new MacBook Pro 13" arrives with 10.7 on it. I think this Lexmark printer driver will work great on that system.
    Thanks again!
