Getting a lot of unknown certificate notices in Safari. What's up?

In the last month, I've been getting "unknown certificate" notices from Safari. I don't see anything wrong with the certificate details, but I'm not sure what to look for. The notices tell me that without the certificate, I won't know if it is a trusted site: the purpose of the certificates I guess. None of the notices were from first time sites. i.e. I was going there on purpose, not through any links, etc. What's up? Should I be concerned? How do I detect if I SHOULD be concerned by information in the details of the certificate?  Russell

First, the process by which the Mac OS checks the validity of root SSL certificates doesn't currently work behind an authenticating proxy, such as those used on some enterprise networks. If you're in that situation, contact your network administrator.
Are the current date (including the year) and time shown on your system clock? If not, correct them and try again.
Otherwise, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter "ocspd" (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Is a process with that name listed?
If not, select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar. In the text box that opens, enter
/var/db/crls
From the folder that opens, move these two files to the Trash:
crlcache.db
ocspcache.db
You’ll be prompted for your administrator password when you do this. Then reboot, empty the Trash, and try again.

  • "Unknown encoder H.264." What do I need?

    Hi!
I'm trying to convert an .avi file to a .mp4 file with H.264. When I'm trying to do this I get an error saying "Unknown encoder H.264." What do I need?
I'm using WinFF for the task. I think it uses ffmpeg, but I can't find out how I can make it support the H.264 codec. Anyone?

You all may want to check to see if you're actually producing aac audio with FAAC. Honestly, it's been broken in Arch for months, the solution is known, and it's not being implemented. If you see the last line after faac --help, you're producing mp2 audio:
    faac --help

  • Does anyone have any suggestions for Ad blocking? I'm getting a lot of pop up ads while using Facebook from Safari.

I'm getting a lot of pop up ads. mostly while using  Facebook. I'm running Safari on a Macbook Pro running Yosemite. Does anyone have any suggestions for an Ad blocker. I don't see anything in the App store.
I can't swear to it but I don't recall this being a problem pre-Yosemite. I could be wrong. I haven't been real active on Facebook until recently. I see some third party apps out there but am alway wary of non approved software.
         Thanks

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Safari is highlighting words and linking them to ads? also getting a lot of pop ups

Safari has started randomly highlighting words and linking them to ads? I'm also getting a lot of pop up ads in new windows and tabs. I googled how to get rid of it and people said to delete extensions and cookies and also block cookies from third parties and advertisers. I've done all this but it is still happening. Any suggestions??

You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.

  • Why do I get a lot of wakeups_resource_spin dumps on Console.app under 10.9.x on an old MacBook Pro ?

I've noticed, under the "Console.app" utility under Mavericks 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 (on an old 15-inch Nov. (mid-)2007 MacBook Pro), that I get a lot of wakeups_resource_spin dumps & some cpu_resource_spin dumps .
    Why is that ?

Because that's the way they coded Mavericks. Ignore them, even if performance is suffering. Alternatively, File a bug report with Apple. See https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/Manpages/ man8/spindump.8.html  for details.

  • Getting a lot of beach balls Application not responding

I have a fairly complex system with 4 internal 1tb drives, 1 external 1tb drive, 1 external 1.5tb drive and an external 2tb drive used by time machine. The system drive contains 2 partitions. The partition containing the OS is 322gb with 72gb free. I havedual cinema displays and literally 100s of applications.
My system has gotten very "sluggish" with a lot of freeze ups, apps not responding and other beach balls. I've been through a couple of OS upgrades currently at latest release of snow leopard.
Do I need to format my disk and do a clean install? If I do, can I just clone the System drive and then copy apps back? Main applications are Photoshop CS5, Lightroom 3 Microsoft Office, Real Studio, Filemaker 11, and all the associated plug-ins and support apps that go along. Reinstalling them would be a nightmare.
I run VirusBarrier X6 with scans each night.
any help is appreciated in advance.

I was also wondering about login items as well, but mine takes forever to restart before it even reaches the login screen, so I'm thinking it isn't a problem with that. Unless some login items start initiating before the actual login is done. My MacBook Pro is running 10.6.7 as well, but it seems fine. I attempted an installation CD startup, checked for disk repair (ok), disk permissions (ok), then tried re-installing Snow Leopard. It got so far then couldn't finish the installation.
Ok, so I just tried it again just now and it seems to be running fine again. The only thing I did was get rid of two unknown files in login items (buttonhelper or something) using ( - ), not just hiding them. Time Machine does appear to be doing some strange things, so I erased that disk and initiated a fresh TimeMachine backup.
Don't know about you, but I'm baffled...

I downloaded pictures onto my iPhone from computer twice by mistake now when i uncheck/sync then check and sync again  i keep getting two lots of pics..how can i get just the one set again? thnx

    You're welcome.
All photos transferred from your computer are stored in the iPhone's Photo Library regardless if you select a single album or folder of photos to be transferred or multiple albums or folders. The photos on the albums or folders of photos include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. The photos are not duplicated taking up double the storage space. This way you can view the photos in an album or folder of photos only by selecting the album or folder, or all photos in all albums or folders by selecting Photo Library.
Makes more sense when transferring multiple albums or folders of photos which cannot be changed when transferring only a single album or folder of photos.
The same applies with iTunes and music playlists. A song can't be in a playlist unless it is in the main iTunes library. Placing a song in a playlist does not duplicate the song.
