Getting a Macbook Pro Need Help

Im trying to decide on a Macbook Pro 2.4GHz or the 2.53 GHz
If i get the 2.4GHz-
I'll upgrade the ram to 4Gb.
Upgrade the hard drive to 7200 rpm.
How would a 7200 rpm drive effect battery life, and performance compared to a 5400 rpm?
Also, How what are the best 7200 rpm drives? By that i mean most reliable, least power consumptive.
Also if i made these changes to the 2.4 GHz, would a 2.53 GHz be noticeable in difference of performance? ( I don't play games much, but do use apps like, VM Ware Fusion, iMovie, Photoshop CS4 and also multi task alot like using iMovie, iTunes, alot of Safari webs pages open, Mail, MS Office,Photoshop CS4, Quicktime, and VM Ware at once )

...How would a 7200 rpm drive effect battery life...
Very minimal. The current crop of 7200RPM drives are very efficient with their power requirements.
...and performance compared to a 5400 rpm?
If you work with larger files (audio, video, whatever) there is a noticeable difference in performance.
...Also, How what are the best 7200 rpm drives?
Seagate and Hitachi make quality drives...Check with what Other World Computing recommends.
...difference between 2.4 GHz, would a 2.53 GHz...
I do not think this small processor change would be as noticeable as the performance gains you will achieve by using a 7200RPM drive vs. a 5400RPM drive. Others here will better answer this.
...[lots of programs] all at once...
Then max out your RAM. Again, Other World Computing will steer you in the correct direction!

  • I have a cd stuck in my Macbook Pro. need help getting it out.

so i was watching a movie, then i wanted to grab a bite to eat. i just pause the movie and closed my computer screen. then when i came back, the dvd did not want to play saying that "Supported Disc Not Available" and it would not eject when i hit the eject key button. NEED HELP ASAP

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Trying to install software from iomega to my new macbook pro need help

Need help trying to install software from an iomega to my new macbook pro.....any help appreciated.

Contact their tech support department since it's their product, not Apple's.  Did you read the user manual?  You make no mention of doing so.

  • DELL 2407WFP 24" with Macbook Pro - Need Help!

I just bought a new 2407WFP and am planning on using it with my Macbook Pro. When I connect it (using VGA to DVI conversion into the Macbook Pro), I select the maximum resolution setting for the Dell monitor, however, it just mirrors with resolution of my Macbook Pros's screen. The Dell 2407WFP's screen resolution comes out having the exact same workspace as my Macbook Pro, just bigger. This is not what I want at all. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

The original reply is correct. I do this with my MBP and the 23" Cinema Display all the time. Put your computer to sleep/ close the lid. Make sure the power cable is plugged in, as well as your keyboard and mouse, and the display you want to use. If you have Bluetooth devices it will still work. Simply tap a key on the keyboard and the computer will wake up, sense that the lid is closed, and make the external display your sole & primary display. I use bluetooth devices myself and they work fine. I've even formatted my computer before while attached to the external display and it will sense the display/keyboard/mouse on first startup and work with them. It's wonderfully simple.
If there are USB ports on your Dell monitor then there should also be a USB connector for your computer on the cable. Essentially it's a USB hub, and should work fine provided the USB cable from the screen is attached to your computer. VGA & DVI do not provide USB signals.

  • Just bought a macbook pro, need help.

Hi everyone, I just bought a macbook pro 15" intel core 2 duo, 2.16GHz and the person I bought it from did not erase anything. I myself have a macbook but I bought this for my girlfriend as a gift. I am having a problem changing the name of the user. I have already changed the username and the password but in the finder, where it usually says "user" it says Elle (previous owner). So I was just wondering how I can change this, I have read other people's posts and a lot have to resort to erasing everything and reinstalling the software, but I don't have any of the software and neither does the person I bought it from. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I would never run a used Mac inherited or purchased from someone else without wiping and re-installing Mac OS X. You can't really know how well it was maintained or what could possibly be on the hard drive - in terms of system security configurations, legalities, as well as just things that could have been misconfigured and/or create compatibility issues, etc.
Much cleaner and neater to just wipe and re-install.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

  • I have just upgraded to the new OS X V. 10.10.3 but cannot access my iCloud Drive documents using the resident Pages and Numbers software on my MacBook Pro. Help needed.

I have just upgraded to the new OS X V. 10.10.3 but cannot access my iCloud Drive documents using the resident Pages and Numbers software on my MacBook Pro. Help is needed to access those documents using the resident software on my MacBook Pro rather than the Beta software on iCloud.com.

I have iCloud Drive set on the Finder sidebar and use that to open the Numbers Spreadsheet on iCloud.
    OSX 10.10.3
    Best.

  • Need some advice about possibly getting a MacBook Pro

I have been offered retail price for my 3 month old PB 17" (see description below). If I decided to do it, I would turn around and buy the new MacBook Pro. I love my PB and really hadn't thought about getting the MacBook Pro because I just got this laptop. I do have some accessories that I wouldn't be able to use on the new latop (FW800 2.5" hard drive and EVDO broadband internet pccard to name a couple). A couple of reasons that I can think of that I wouldn't like to switch are reduced screen size (although due to the better brightness, I could probably deal with it), reduced DVD Drive (although I have yet to burn using Dual Layer), etc. I have been reading about how some people like this or that about the MacBook Pro, but I was curious to get everyone's opinion on a switch from a very new laptop. I am leaning against doing the deal, but would love the input. I don't use it for major video editing, although I do a little, but only for home/family movies. Mainly, it is used for my everyday portable workstation. I do make a living using my computer (I repair computers, mac and pc) so something speedy is a must, but it seems to me that I have suffcient speed already. Well, enough of my rambling, any input would be great.
    Thanks in advance,
    GeNomeZ

Well, I have a 15" PowerBook G4 as well, the recent high res one that came out in October. I'm taking the plunge but as you can see below I haven't received mine yet so I can't give you too much of my opinion. I did it more for the processor, iSight, the ir for Front Row, the video card, the faster ram, the faster fsb, uhhhh, I could go on. I'll probably notice the 60 pixel loss but I'll deal, I can deal w/o dual layer, ***** about the speed drop, I never used fw800 or the pc card slot. And dial up doesn't exist to me

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive?

How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive? I'm working on transferring my music from our home computer to my new laptop and I already got all my music onto the hard drive but now, when I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it doesn't recognize it. There isn't an icon that pops up and nothing happens at all. The blue light on the hard drive that indicates that it knows it is plugged into something comes up but that's about it. Someone told me I might have to "format" it but I don't know what that means and I don't know how to do it. I just want to get my music from the hard drive to my laptop so please help!

    natgray17 wrote:
I don't know about your first question... I went to finder, preferences, then general but I didn't see anything for the hard drive.
Huh, in the Finder menu, Preferences, you will see this:
Nope, disk utility cannot see it. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it still won't recognize it.puter that's a Mac...
If DU cannot see it then the preferences is just an academic exercise.
If this is a USB drive then as mentioned above you may need a powered USB hub since there may not be enough power from the USB to run the drive.  What else do you have plugged into the USB ports?  If there's some stuff you can unplug it then do it and see if your drive mounts.
What do you mean from a Windows machine? It's a Toshiba hard drive and I put my music on it from my home computer that's a Mac...
Which is all I wanted to know, i.e., whether the drive came from a Winows machine.  So it's been formatted and created on a mac.  Therefore it should mount on this other mac machine.  So it most likely is a power problem.

  • My external hard disk not working properly in my macbook pro . anyone help me . its seagate  hard disk

My external hard disk not working properly in my macbook pro . anyone help me . its seagate  hard disk

You need to get some software that allows your Mac to read and write to the NTFS disk.  There's a whole bunch of stuff out there, but this program has a good review, and you can try it for free.  I would move everything off of your external drive, reformat it into Mac OSX extended, and use it for your Mac.  You don't need NTFS anymore, unless you still have a Windows computer that needs it.

  • I can't get my macbook pro linked to my HP PPhotosmart 5510 printer

I can't get my macbook pro linked (wirelss) to my HP PPhotosmart 5510 printer? When I put the CD in the drive and try to install it says I need OSX 10.5 or 10.6. Please help!...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Try downloading the latest drivers and updates, including a 'critical update' for OS X 10.7 'Lion' directly from HP:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=219&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw _lang=&product=5063582#N179
If the direct link above doesn't work, you can navigate your way through about three layers of HP menus, starting at hp.com, then Printers, selecting your Photosmart model, and eventually reaching Software and Driver downloads, and OS X.

  • Getting a macbook pro, what to do??

i have a choice. i want to edit a short documentary i shot on hdv at 1080i. i'm going to get a macbook pro to use going forward for this and other smaller video projects. the brand new mbp came out yesterday, and to get what i want, it's around $3700.
Now there is refurb on the apple site with 2.4ghz drive, 2gb ram, 160gb HD (5400). which i can get or about $2800, with applecare/fce.
i could save $1,000 with the refurb. but am i going to miss out on much? the differences:
    2.4 vs. 2.5 ghz
    180gb hd (5400) vs 200gb hd (7200)
regular screen vs. high res screen
video card 256 vs. video card 512
i'm planning on using external drive anyway (7200)...not sure what a 'scratch drive' is and how the workflow would be, thinking just store main clips on external and work on edits on internal?

For HD video on a MacBook Pro, you want the fastest machine you can afford. The refurb's are tempting as are several online deals of the previous generation- it all comes down to your budget.
The 7200 RPM internal drive will make a big difference in everything you do with video. Just get it- 5400 will drop frames sooner or later and you will be sad. but be sure not to fill it up or it will be slow- offload everything you can to your external drive.
The new 512 video card will help with Motion projects especially, as well as other heavily GPU dependent software such as Aperture. Even the 2.6 upgrade from 2.5 will make a difference- it just depends on your budget. Given that Macbook Pro's are not very upgradeable other than replacing the entire unit, i like to buy top of the line for my video production use.
As for the hi-res screen it's great for editing if your eyes are up to it. The best timeline experience you can have on a laptop!
That being said, i just ordered a 15 for the portability since I shoot with an HVX200 and I need to offload P2 cards in the field. My 17 HD/2.4 is great but it's a tank! Everything's a trade off in the portable arena... but what a delicious decision to have to make. Have fun with it!
