Getting a ministack or sit-on powered USB hub in the UK?

I've got a Mac Mini G4 - I got it a decent-ish price, coming as it did with a three year warranty - in the UK and I'm having problems finding anywhere over there that sells external enclosures. My primary reason for wanting one of these is to add an extra 3 USB ports to my Mac Mini. I was considering getting one of those Belkin USB hub things that the mini stands on, but I need powered USB ports. I really want one that fits below the Mac Mini.
Which got me thinking about external enclosures. I could buy an empty one, such as the Ministack V2, use it as a hub, and add a bigger hard disk later, which I probably will as I intend to replace my PC with my Mac long term. So does anyone know anywhere in the UK that sells a MiniStack V2 empty or similar empty enclosure that features powered USB ports? Or failing that, are there any mini-shaped USB hubs, other than the Belkin one, that actually have powered USB ports?

Might I recommend checking out macsales.com for the ministack? They are in the US but I have more than a couple friends in the UK that have purchased from them previously.
(..and I've mentioned that site a lot today, I feel like an advertiser now but I seriously am in NO WAY affiliated with them. I've just used them for years and they've proven reliable to me.)

    Hello,
Will an Apple Iphone 3g charge from a Powered USB Hub while the computer is sleeping?
I have a Motorola SLVR L7, two BCK-08 Bluetooth Stereo Headsets and two iPower Secondary iPhone batteries that all charge from my Powered USB Hub while my main computer is sleeping.
It would seem that my iPhone 3g will not charge from a Powered USB Hub while the computer attached to it is sleeping?
Is there any way to get an Iphone 3g to charge from a PoWeReD UsB HuB while the computer it is attached to is sleeping?
I'm thinking in terms of greening things ... but this is making me leave a 170 Watt computer running while I sleep ... I don't use the computer much while asleep ...

    How 'linux' is OS X?
In linux you can get a lot of USB information by typing "+lsusb -v+"
    or through "/proc/bus/usb/devices"
(but they would both list everything connected via USB)
if you knew the vendor and device id you could type as an example

  • Airport Extreme w/Powered USB Hub and External Disk Drive Win 7

    Hello,
I have an Airport Extreme device setup with a Belkin powered USB hub in the USB port.  I am using the
hub to network a USB printer and an external hard drive.  I established a wireless home network
for Windows 7 PCs.  I am able to print to the printer from all clients on the network.  However, the clients
cannot see the hard disk even though it displays in the Airport Utility > Disks.  I have selected
"Share over Ethernet WAN port" in the configuration.  Can you tell me what I am missing in order to make this drive
accessible and usable to the clients on the network?
    Thank you in advance.

The base station can't read or share a drive formatted to NTFS.

  • Macbook Air + 30" Apple Cinema Display + Powered USB hub

I just received my dual link DVI to mini display port adapter in the mail today, and so far it's working just fine connecting my newer generation Macbook Air to the older 30" Apple Cinema display (the Air is closed, with an Apple wireless mouse/keyboard connected via Bluetooth).
I'm wondering if anyone has any success connecting a powered USB hub to either the adapter itself or the 30" display in order to gain some USB functionality out of the Air? I have a powered 4 port D-Link hub which worked fine directly into the Air, but I can't seem to power any devices when it's hooked up to the 30" display or directly into the adapter. I can't even get devices (external powered hard drives, Mbox) to work when plugged into the screen directly (no hub).
I called AppleCare about the problem and they said they don't support USB hubs via the 30" Apple Cinema Display when connected to the Macbook Air, but if anyone has any experience with this situation or if someone could offer me advice to get USB functionality out of my MBA + 30" ACD, it would be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
    Unfortunately not.

  • Do i need a powered usb hub to connect my external hard drive and printer to my airport extreeme

I tried a usb hub from Belkin that is not powered. Is this why I cannot get my hard drive to work on my Airport Extreme?

I am assuming that you are using the newer "square" version of the AirPort Extreme, not the older "round" version.
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered. I have had to use a powered USB hub with any type of hard drive that I've ever used on the Extreme, even if the drive had its own power supply.
You might want to also check to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or MS-DOS FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work at the AirPort Extreme.

  • Airport Extreme REQUIRES powered USB hub for external HDDs

Just bought an Airport Extreme Wireless dual-band N router (January 2012).  It works very well and having the separate 2.5 and 5 GHz bands is a fantastic feature.  Setup was really easy and it essentially worked 'out of the box'.  The one issue I had is attaching a USB Western Digital 1 TB HDD to share on the network and use for Time Machine backups from multiple MacBook Pro laptops.
The drive would appear in the Aiport Utility's "Share Hard Drive" tab, but it was listed as zero bytes and wasn't available to actually share out over the network.  I formatted it as a single volume to make sure there wasn't an issue with the drive itself (although it should support multiple partitions on a drive), and it mounted to my Mac just fine, but it still would not work with the Airport Extreme.
After reading several posts on these Apple forums I picked up the fact that the only way most people get their hard drives to work is by purchasing a powered USB hub and connecting that between the Extreme and the hard drive.  Some hard drives do appear to work plugged directly into the Airport Extreme, but that seems to be more of the exception than the rule.
The reason given is that the USB port on the Airport Extreme was originally designed for printers and is basically underpowered for proper HDD connections. Adding a powered USB hub not only allows USB hard drives to work, but you can connect multiple USB devices (hard drives and printers) to share over the Airport Extreme through the powered hub, so you do get that added feature.
So if you have plans to upgrade to the incredibly fast and efficient Airport Extreme and plan to do your Time Machine Backups wirelessly (which works very well), add a powered USB hub to your purchase to avoid some frustration.  I picked up a four-port powered USB hub at Staples for $30.
It's a great purchase otherwise.  Four out of five stars in my review.

For anyone else who reads this post, the respondents are correct.  I cannot find anything directly from Apple that states explicity the support for Time Machine backups to a USB drive on a second generation Apple Airport Extreme.  I would love to see their detailed case studies and latest tests that demonstrate the backup corruption isues, and more recent tests conducted with the latest Airport Extreme, running the latest firmware with Lion 10.7.2.
Having said that, each person who is interested in this as a backup solution should consider more than one source before making a final decision:

The Apple Support articles referenced that explicity state TS does not work with Airport Extreme mounted USB drives are for older OS X 10.5 and 10.6.  I cannot find anything for 10.7 that states the same thing:
    Older Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html
    http://Pondini.org/TM/Airport.html
The other thing you can do is on the Time Machine menu, hold down the "Option" key and use the 'verify backups' option to help ensure that your TS backups are valid.
Hopefully Apple will come out with an official statement soon that speaks directly to the 2nd generation Airport Extreme on the latest firmware running TS backups from OS X Lion 10.7.
My statement about the need for a powered USB hub to have much better success with USB attached hard drives still stands.

  • Possible USB port damage using non-powered USB hub?

Referring to the recent discussion on ruining firewire ports with damaged peripherals, a related question concerning the possibility of damage to the USB port:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7948387#7948387
I have an old iPod Shuffle, USB only, and a camera card reader, both of which which get pulled and connected "on the fly" to a bus powered USB hub which is attached to one of the USB ports on the iMac. Am I risking similar damage to the iMac USB port, itself, if something goes bad on the Shuffle or the card reader? Should I be using a POWERED USB hub to avoid direct damage to the iMac USB hub? (And, assuming it will have to be USB 2.0, will it be backwards compatible to USB 1.1?)

No, my belief is that FireWire devices are more prone to damaging the circuitry behind the port due to connecting and disconnecting on-the-fly (compared to USB). There is supporting documentation on the web, for example.
    http://www.wiebetech.com/whitepapers/FireWirePortFailures.php
    http://lowendmac.com/misc/03/0421.html
    (there are many more)
Mechanical failure (wear and tear) through constant plugging and unplugging is a secondary consideration.
If your FireWire device is constantly connected, this issue does not exist (and there is no wear and tear either). On my Intel iMac, my external FireWire drive is always connected, and I use the direct port on the Mac. If I ever need to disconnect it, I shut down my iMac and then disconnect. The other FireWire port is connect to a hub, and that is where I connect and disconnect FireWire devices on-the-fly (old iPod, small bus-powered drive, and video camera).
If your iPod shuffle is the old +thumb drive+ style with the USB plug, you should be using a self-powered hub. That may be why it is not reliable. Also, that plug on the old shuffle is the most likely part to fail, so it is possible that it is getting worn out. I bought a bunch of used and reportedly broken iPod shuffle (the older white type) on eBay to see if I could fix any of them. I would say, 80% of the time, it was broken due to a faulty USB plug (no data connection). On the rare ones broken for another reason, I used that good USB plug to get another shuffle working. (A few worked after using the iPod Reset Utility, without any other repair. )
But I'm getting off topic with the shuffle talk...

    Hi.
Does anyone own the Trust HU-5770 7-port powered USB hub? I'd like to know if it is compatible with the my G4/1.42 mini. I read at the manufacturers site that it has some issues with the iMac, but not anything more than that.

    Hi Drgeert-
The hub may not be broken per se, but Apple has made adjustments to the limits on current that can be drawn from ports.
You probably need a new hub.

  • When I connect my MacBook Air to iPads through a powered USB hub the power cord for the hub explodes and trips the fuse on the building. I've tried different iPads, cords, power points to no avail.

When I connect my mac air to some iPads through a powered USB hub for VPP/Configurator, the power point for the hub blows out (tripping the fuse in the building). I've tried different iPads, cords, power points and of course hubs. Also the computer has a habit of shutting down when any type of USB device is removed from it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've done some experimenting, and this is what I've found out:
    1) The problem persists when I reformatted the USB HDD devices to ExFAT, so the problem apparently wasn't due to NTFS for Mac OS X by Paragon.
    2) The problem persists even when BackBlaze is paused, so I don't think that it's due to BackBlaze.
    3) The internet cuts out as soon as data begins transferring either to or from a USB HDD device and won't reconnected until I eject and unplug the device.
    4) The problem affects data transfers through either USB port.

my phone is not getting started, its displaying itunes sign and USB sign on the phone's screen. I have also restored and updated the phone however not getting started

It helped earlier but it has come back again. I don't know what to do. I tried what you said earlier but this time even this is not working either. And quite intrestingly my phone won't turn off. I turn it off, it goes off and then restarts on its own and then keep giving the same message again and again.
Could it be a charging cable, is there any chance that the cable which was working fine one day could turn to be "incompatible" with iphone the other day????????

  • Anker Powered USB Hub (7 port, usb 3.0) often won't light up (function) after waking Mavericks from sleep

My iMac is  27" (mid-2010) with 8 GB RAM. My only problem is that my new Anker Powered USB Hub (7 port, USB 3.0) often does not wake when computer does. In other words, the power lights remain off following waking the computer from sleep and I must unplug and replug the HUB. I called Anker and they told me that Mavericks has a new "energy saving power mode" that may turn off power to a USB hub. This is most annoying and I hope that Apple can update Mavericks power management to fix this USB issue. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I've seen similar posts from D-Link USB hub owners. Perhaps if this "question" has a response trail, Apple will see it and create a fix.

Hopefully, Apple will monitor this issue and correct the USB power management issue. We'll see what happens with Yosemite.

  • I need to find a powered usb hub that works with my Macbook pro

I've got a macbook pro mid 2010. And 2 usb ports isn't enough. Even with the powered hubs taht I have tried none will seem to charge my ipad 2. It only works if it is plugged directly in to the Macbook. So is there a powered usb hub out there that can handle having an ipod and and ipad plugged into them and actually charge these devices. Thanks in advance.

    Yes. Google...

  • 10.5.2 - Frozen Grey Boot Screen with Powered USB Hub -

Hey guys I upgraded to 10.5.2 and after I did, I found my powered USB hub was causing a hanging grey screen when I turn the power on. Anyway does anyone know how to make it not lock up on a grey screen? If I unplug the hub it boots, but until I do it is an endless hanging grey screen. If it is a bug can you guys please fix because I find it really annoying to have to unplug and replug my hub every time I boot.

Update: IT only happens when I plug my iPod into the hub that is plugged into my iMac. If I plug my iPod into the Macs USB directly it boots fine. Kinda a crappy bug or maybe a setting I need to change to be able to keep my iPod plugged into my powered usb hub when I boot so it doesn't hang.

  • Question about powered usb hubs

Basically I would like to know if you need a powered usb hub if you wish to connect 2 ext HDs(Lacie 320gb)to an AEBS if they have their own power supply? Thanks alot

No, a powered hub is only necessary if you have multiple usb devices that require power from the hub. Printers, and hard drives, with a power plug, do not draw power from the hub.
On another note, I have a laptop drive plugged into an non powered hub, and it works with the AEBS just fine. (no external power plug) The base station apparently supplies some power, but I'm sure it's not enough for more than one drive.
