Getting a new mac w/ Leopard - program questions

I've read through a list of programs that "compatible" with the new OS X Leopard system.
But I wanted to get some feedback from forum members on how well they run compared to Tiger.
I'm first off purchasing a Stock MacPro 2.8Ghz w/ the 8800GT
my current machine is great but not gonna update it to leopard and im looking to expand my productivity and business.
The following programs i use on a continuous and daily basis:
Adobe Creative Suite 2 (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc)
Macromedia Studio 8 (Flash, Dreamweaver, Etc)
Office 2004
Ableton Live 5
other programs
Popcorn
toast 7
Essentially i could spend figuratively the amount for Adobe CS3 instead of a new MacPro, but id frankly rather get the big rig to work in correspondence to my hardware needs.
ANy trouble with Adobe CS2 or office 2004 with Leopard?
or any other advice with regards to the Computer upgrade?
thanks!!

I was running Filemaker Pro 5 on my tiger system. Upgraded to Leopard and now find out that a lot of my old software will not work on Leopard. My address book with all of the notes is gone. InDesign does not work. Dreamweaver cuts off right in the middle of working on web pages. The list could go on and on, but right now I am backing my files up and cleaning the machine up. AND by the way my old ipod classic is not supported either. Wow was this an eye opener!
What I really want to know is: Does anyone use Filemaker Pro 9? Are there problems with it? I need an address book for my small business and now have to rebuild it in something because I can't even open the old one.
One step at a time. I should know better by now to not upgrade when the computer is running WELL!
Thanks for any help
Anita

  • Switching an old dual 1.8 to a new mac pro 8 core questions

    hi
Tomorrow i am getting a new Mac Pro 8 core 2.8, the basic model, 2 gigs ram (for now) and the on 320 gig HD. I am not a great mac person, i used my old one for some final cut express stuff and that was about it. so i was wondering if someone could answer these questions for me
    1) will final cut HD load fine on the new one in terms of licenses? in that, will that license or serial number i have used on the old one be ok on the new one?
    - same things for aperture, these are really the only 2 programs i have and really need on the new one, till i move up to final cut full
    2) i have an older "projects" western digital HD with the projects, pics etc on it, can i swap that HD into one of the new slots till i get another newer drive? its sata, but i am not sure what speed?? its probably 3 years old now
    3) what exactly does the new mac pro come with?? in the apple store it really doesn't go into it, i have ilife 05 on my old one, is it worth getting the new one? does it come with things like that?
    4) i mainly do home movie's and video editing on my mac, if i end up with final cut studio 2 i think it is, what is the recommended RAM?
    5) where is the best place to buy more RAM and HD's for the mac? i will need or want 3 more 500 gig min, 7200 speed drives and probably 2-6gigs more ram.
ok, that should confuse me pretty well for a while
    thanks for any help!

    1. As long as the software is not installed on more than one CPU you are not in violation of the software license. You will use the same serial number.
    2. Any SATA drive can be installed in the computer.
    3. New computers come with OS X and iLife pre-installed. Also trial versions of iWork, MS Office, and Quicken's Quick Books.
    4. I would recommend at least 4 GBs of RAM.
    5. You can buy RAM from any online vendor that has the proper type of RAM with the proper heat sinks. Suitable vendors are Data Mem and MacSales.com. Hard drives are available at any number of online vendors such as:
    MacSales.com
    Buy.com
    NewEgg.com

  • New Mac Pro and migration question

I will be getting a new Mac Pro in a day or so. I currently have a G4 with all the Adobe suite programs and more. I am wondering if it is best to install those fresh. It sure would help to get all my Dreamweaver settings as I have a ton of sites.
Should I just transfer mail and prefs etc.

There are many pros and cons to doing such a thing. The biggest pro to doing so is expediency. Manual transitions, while more efficient, can be quite a pain even when you know what goes where. When this works it works great.
However, there are downsides to it. Firstly, being a new system the best way to gauge it's performance is to have everything fresh and new. While it's more effort you do get a much better feel for what you system can do and a much better awareness of when things are wrong.
Then there's the migration itself. With a data only migration I can't see much going wrong but there are instances when a migration does affect total system performance.
So I guess I've not really answered your question. There are benefits to opting both ways.

  • Getting a new Mac: need to transfer files/applications, have external hard drive, and wipe clean old Mac to give to family member

Getting a new Mac this Christmas. I have several questions:
    1. How do I transfer files/applications from old to new?
    2. I have an external hard drive, do I need to save iTunes account to it?
    3. How do I wipe the old Mac clean to give to family member?

    1. Use the Migration Assistant the first time you turn on the new computer.
    2. No, but you should do so as a backup.
    3. Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C or Option key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

  • How do I get my new mac to auto cap the the first letter in a sentence?

can some tell me how to get my new mac to auto capitalise the first letter of each sentence?

Quick answer, Pages 5.0 no longer does this. Frustrating! If you have Pages 4.3, it can do it.
Also, check out the More Like This column on the right. Some people have the same question and you might find some good tips there.

I was able to copy all my files from my Time Capsule, but that is all they are...files. How do I get my new Mac Mini to emulate my other Mac?

    Doggiemommie,
Copying files is not a good idea.
The "other Mac" was backed up onto Time Capsule using the Time Machine. On your new Mac you should restore the old user - rather than copy files manually.
This usually happens during the initial setup of the new computer or you can do it later using Migration Assistant.
Please note, it is possible to damage backup file on the Time Capsule when you browse it and copy files manually.
    Hope this explains.

I cannot get the new mac mini to wake from sleep and trigger the displays - this is the second mac mini I have had and both have had the same issues. It worked before on my macbook extremely well...
Using 2 displays, connected via HDMI and thunderbolt
Been on to support a number of times now - is anyone experiencing the same issues?

    BUMP.
I actually showed this to Apple geniuses when I took my computer to the apple store, and it's still here. In console it says:
    kernel[0]: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128
I don't know if that's related or not, but maybe helps?

  • Unable to open indesign after migration to new mac all other programs open and work.

Unable to open indesign after migration to new mac all other programs open and work. Why? Running Yosemite 10.10.1 Indesign CS5

The keyword is "migration." Migrating or copying files for Adobe applications usually does not work. Not all of the necessary subsidiary files are copied to the right location.
You'll need to first clean up the mess with this tool:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download an installer from here:

super keyword is used when there is inheritance (class extending other class). In your particular case, super keyword doesnt make sense, since there isnt inheritance between A and B. You can use the INT field by an instance of A class.
a keyword like "parent" does not exist in java.

  • New Mac user with some questions!

Hello everyone, I fairly new to mac! (I came from the Dark Side....PC)And here is how this happen. I was searching a local web page of people that sell used computer and searched for a couple of days when I came across a G5 1.6 being sold for parts (DEAD G5 No Power issue), everything was in it but the HD. I thought I would pick it up for the $150.00 the seller was asking thinking I could possible purchase parts to fix it! LOL well that was a BIG heck no!! Well remember I have $150.00 in this already. Well after seeing all the problems everyone was having with the G5's and the dreaded no power "DEAD G5" threads every where I was getting a little worried if I wasted the money on a doorstop. I talked to a few people and look around on the net again to see how much used "working" G5 1.6 were going for, I saw a few that were inflated in price and saw some that were fair in price.
So with the research I did (and still a little worried if I did the right ting) I took the G5 to the apple store and had them look at it. They told me it could be the Logic board, CPU, and or PSU and was given a paper with the parts and labor as a est. $1083.00 was the price for the above parts to be replaced, I felt like I was being robbed. But I told them to look at it and call me with the issues before any work was done!
Ok as of right now I have $150.00 in it already plus the $100.00 Diag fee. No biggie at least the case is worth $250.00 for a PC case!(LOL) Just joking guys!!
The next day the local Apple store called me and told me it was the logic board, and when they get the new board in they would be able to test the CPU. So I told them to replace the Logic board.... Later that day the call came in saying the CPU and PSU were good and they installed Tiger on it for me for free. So far at the 1st visit to the apple store when I dropped off the G5 I was like dang I'm not enjoying this, but now afer a logic board replacement and level 2 tech it came to $535.00.
    So
    $150.00 (Purcased from seller)
    $ 60.00 (160gb SATA HD)
    $535.00 (Logic board & Level 2 Labor)
    $745.00 total cost
    Now here is the question!
Was it a smart thing to get the logic board replaced?
Will this G5 1.6 handle Final Cut Pro for 1080i footage captured with a Sony HDV-fx7?
Be Honest with me, I want to know if I was a goof ball or not!!
    Thanks for you help

    Hi MikePerry-
In accounting terms, your expense to repair the machine is considered "sunk cost." Even if you got totally hosed (and you did not) what's done is done.
You can check eBay for comparable setups.
This setup will be able to handle the stated editing needs.
I don't know you well enough to fairly establish any goofball factor

  • My macbook is OSX 10.6.8, should I try to upgrade it or just get a new mac?

My macbook is OSX 10.6.8, should I try to upgrade it or get a new macbook?

Depends on how old it is and if it is able to do what you need it to do. Apple does not make a MacBook any longer. There are just 13" and 15" MacBook Pros.
If you need to upgrade OS X, then find out if your model can be upgraded past Snow Leopard. Note that Lion and later do not support any PPC-only software because the Rosetta emulator no longer works after Snow Leopard.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
