Getting a new macbook, questions about transferring files with Time Machine
I now plan to switch computers to one of the new Macbook pros. Since I now use Time Machine, I'm planning to just upload the backup to the new computer when I get it. the backups are able to be transferred to a new one for an upgrade right?
Also, I had to switch hard drives once about 2 years ago, and when I did, the backup DVD I made for my iTunes didn't remember which of my ~2000 songs are checked and which aren't, leaving me to have to do it manually over the course of a few weeks. Will Time Machine do this for me?
I'm also running Leopard atm, will there be any problems uploading all the info since the new computer will be running Snow Leopard, and the backup was made through Leopard?

Not via a full system restore. You want to use +Setup Assistant+ when the new Mac first starts up. You can transfer directly from the old Mac, or it's backups. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum).
Firewire from the old Mac will be fastest, by far. If you use your network, connect via Ethernet cable; wireless will take an eternity.

It should.

That's what +Setup Assistant+ is all about; it transfers everything except the old version of OSX.

I have a new MacBook pro, I transferred files via time machine and a removable hard drive. Now new MacBook does not recognize the log in password. What can I do to reset the password?
Did you migrate when you first booted up in Setup Assistant or did you migrate later? When you migrate later it can create a second account, check in Mac HD/Users to see if this is the situation.

I just purchased a new macbook pro, I transfered files from my old damaged macbook pro using an external case and the original HD. Safari will not open, and shows a message of "quit unexpectedly"

Can i upgrade to 10.6 snow leopard then restore files with time machine?
I have an early 2006 iMac with 10.5.8, and I am having hard drive problems. I want to reformat my drive, then install 10.6. Can I do that, then restore my files with Time Machine? Will it restore applications?
Yes, you can use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant. When you launch SL for the first time it will ask if you are migrating from another Mac, select yes and then indicate the TM drive. Connect the TM drive to the machien and let it migrate what you want (Settings, Apps, Data etc..). It's important to connect the TM drive via USB or Firwire, DO NOT select Wi-Fi.

My MBA is being shipped, question about transferring files from old PB
Hey guys,
I just ordered a new 13" MBA and am anxiously awaiting for it to arrive... I currently have a 12" Powerbook G4 with 10.5.8 that I use an external drive to back up with time machine.
My question is this; when I get my MBA will I be able to use the time machine back up to migrate my files even though my old computer has an older version of Mac OS on it?A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC
System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies
Browser and other plug-ins
Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior 4.1, TechTool Pro 4.6.1, SuperDuper 2.5, and Drive Genius 2.0.2 work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking
will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- Migration Tips and Tricks;

MacBook Air- Migration Tips and Tricks;
MacBook Air- Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
/Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

I just got a new macbook pro and transferred everything from my old macbook. My photos show up as thumbnails in iphoto, but if I click on them, a "?" pops up for all of them!
Copy the Library over manually.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else. -

I am running mountain lion (10.8.2) and the new Hard drive has two partions - one for "start up" which I was able to use migration assisant to move over my applications from my time machine. The problem I am having is that I can't figure out how to get my user account data transferred to my the data partition (journal extended) on my new hard drive.
When I enter time machine I can't "see" my last back updates before I changed hard drives.
I put my old hard drive in a case and it "isn't working" so I can't just copy data from my old hard drive. It did work initially but now it doesn't mount and I can't see it in disk utility.
Any Ideas on how I can get my user data off my time machine back up?
I forgot to mention that when I go into my external hard drive containing my time machine via finder and click on the folder with my user data I'm not able to open the various files - they have a red "-" and it says, The folder “Desktop” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents. In disk utility I can't run repair disk permision on my time machine drive because it is grayed out.
Thanks - DaveI see. Don't do that. I do not believe using Migration Assistant is a valid method of accomplishing what you intend.
Furthermore, unless you are using the "Enter Time Machine" feature, you really shouldn't pick and choose what you want to copy from a Time Machine backup... "no user serviceable parts inside". You can certainly find and individual files and folders in the Finder, but you will run into the permissions problems you describle. I would not attempt to circumvent those protections.
As I understand Time Machine, you must either restore a volume from a Time Machine backup, thereby erasing the volume first, or restore individual files and folders by using "Enter Time Machine" when the backup has already been properly designated for the source.
Since your replacement hard disk - the source, now - is technically new, the latter is not an option. It's as if you were trying to restore to a different computer. This can't be done. -
Restoring "iPhoto Library" file with Time Machine
My iPhono Library file (which is about 32GB in size) was corrupted by a system crash as I was uploaded new photos. As a result, I was unable to open iPhoto. I tried to restore the iPhoto Library file from the back-up I had from yesterday in Time Machine. For some reason, the restore gets about 3.5GB through and then give me a message that it can't perform the function because I don't have permission ot access the iPhoto Library file.
I need to get this file back up and running. The original file is gone now, as it was over written by the failed restore attempt. I have about 10 years worth of photos of my kids I need back! ANyone have any idea why I can't restore the iPhoto Library file from Time Machine?
Thanks! You need to remove the new library file you created. Then locate the one you want restored from your TM backup using the Time Machine application. If you're not sure how a restore is done the select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine." One of the articles will outline the procedure for restoring individual files.
Also, see User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine. -

Question about transferring files from a Mac
Hi there!
I want to ask about the new iPad mini (and or the iPad 3) especially with transferring files from a Mac.
I normally just do the "normal" way of transferring files (.doc files, .mp3 files or .mp4 video files) i.e. via the USB port of my Mac. But is there a faster, easier and a wireless way to do it?
Please advice.
Thanks.onslaught wrote:
I couldn't find Dropbox on the Mac App Store but i could find Dropcopy in there.
Stupid question: will i need to also install Dropcopy on my iPad 3/iPad mini in order for my files to be transferred?
Yes, it will need to,install it on any machine you wish to use it on.
also, you should spend some time on the Drobbox website to see how it works. You won't find it in the Mac App Store, but can still easily using it on a Mac. -
New Macbook hard drive can't locate Time Machine files of backup on external drive
I just got my hard drive replaced as it was failing. Just before I took it to the apple store I backed up my hard drive using time machine, on a separate hard drive: phew! I checked that time machine was operating fine before I took it in to get the new hard drive - it was fine, I was able to "go back in time" and access my files.
I tried to reload from time machine as soon as it started up, but it wasn't working, so I figured I'd just work on transferring the files after I booted up. Now I have a new hard drive and then plugged my external hard drive with the back up stored on it into my computer, but it cannot get the backup on my fixed macbook! It says it can't find it, and when I've looked at the disk in Finder (in backups.backupdb) it shows as a folder of my computer's name, and the only file inside is It is called: 2013-11-22-133614.inProgress (not even the correct date of the back up!).
Now time machine won't go back in time any further than the age of the new hard drive.
I can't understand that it seemed to be there, but now it is incomplete - this is ridiculous!
What has happened?
Has Time Machine failed me?
Are the files there somewhere hidden away?Check here, Pondini has extensive info on TM:

Questions about "Restore System From Time Machine"
Looking to fix an apparent system corruption problem on my work machine, I discovered the "Utilities > Restore System From Time Machine" option of the Leopard installation disc. I have some questions that are not answered in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1177:
1. Does this option erase the hard drive and install a fresh system from DVD, or do I need to do that in a separate step?
2. What about software updates - when are they applied?
3. Will third-party system extensions be reinstalled OK?
4. I tried launching the process on my home machine, just to see how it works. At work I have a dedicated disk for Time Machine, but at home I have a Time Capsule, serving two Macs via Ethernet. I've also configured the TC to give us a shared volume; so in normal operation I have two network volumes, <Username>, containing Time Machine's sparsebundle file for that user's Mac, and "Shared". When I boot from the installation DVD and run "Utilities > Restore System From Time Machine", the backup volume list only shows the "Shared" volume. If I select it, I'm prompted for my TC username and password; I enter it, TC spins up, and then nothing. I cannot continue the restoration process, and reselecting the "Shared" volume does nothing. ???
Thanks in advance for your help.
-- PhilFor the record, here's what I've found out so far:
1. The "Restore System From Time Machine" option seems to want to restore everything, including the system, from the Time Machine backup. I wanted a clean system install, so I did an "Erase & install" followed by a "Restore from Time Machine" in the Migration Assistant. That got me most, but not all, of my settings back; exceptions include the printer configurations, the desktop picture, and the Dock settings.
2. Software updates can be applied after the new system is rebooted.
3. Most 3rd party extensions seem to have been restored OK, but some (like MacFuse) were not.
4. I'd still be grateful for any hints concerning how to get "Restore from Time Machine" to work with a Time Capsule.

How do I back up my files with Time Machine?
I have read the "frequently asked questions" regarding setting up my TM, but none address my specific problems which all began when I could no longer launch iPhoto.
Issues:
1. iPhoto. When I launch it there is a gray screen with a spinning white windmill in the middle. I have let it launch for over a half hour and there was zero change. I have tried several things suggested on this site, but nothing seems to help. I read that I should first back up my iPhoto files before I created a new photo library.
2. When I open Time Machine and slide it to ON, my only option is to CREATE A TIME CAPSULE and I have no idea how to do that???
All I want to do was upload some pictures from my camera!
I am a very new Mac user and would appreciate any help with these issues.First off, in order to answer your question about how to set up Time Machine, you'll need to follow these steps:
1) Get some sort of backup drive to back your stuff up onto. Preferably you'll want it to be mac formatted already, however it is possible to erase a PC formatted drive to work on the mac.
2) Plug the drive into your Mac, and it will ask if you want to use it as a time machine volume, choose yes. If this message doesn't come up, go to time machine and choose to select drive, then choose your backup hard drive.
You'll want to get a external drive that can store more information than your computer can store. Portable USB drives are the most convenient since they don't need extra cables and are light and small. I would recommend a 320GB or 500GB+ external hard drive.
Your first time machine backup will occur within about 2 minutes of agreeing to use the drive as a time machine volume.
As for your major issue, please make sure you've done the time machine backup before continuing on to the next steps.
iPhoto issue troubleshooting:
1) Hold down command, option and click on iPhoto to launch it. It should give you some options to rebuild the iPhoto library. Begin by trying a few of those before continuing on to more serious solutions.
2) Hold down option and click on iPhoto to launch it, then choose to create a new iPhoto library. See if iPhoto launches okay from there.
To recover your old photos, you'll want to go to your Pictures folder (in your home folder), find the iPhoto Library -- the old one you originally used, not the new one you just created. Right click (or hold control and click) on the iPhoto Library file and choose "Show Package contents". Inside the new folder you'll want to look for a folder called Masters. You can drag that folder onto iPhoto and it will begin importing all your old photos.
Alternatively, a software called iPhoto Library Manager has a repair option that you can try:

HT201250 Deleting Laptop Files with Time Machine
Is it OK to delete excess files from my laptop now that they are on the external back up drive using toime machine?
Time Machine is NOT an archive. If the files do not exist on your main drive, Time Machine will eventually delete them from its backups.
If you need an archive, then get another external drive, plus get Time Machine to backup that drive as well.
You do NOT want your archive on the same drive as the backup because if the backup disk dies, you will have lost both the backup and the archive.
If you need space on your Macbook Pro, then try using a tool like OmniDiskSweeper to find where all your space is currently being used. Focus on storage under /Users/... Be careful about touching anything NOT in /Users/... as it is most likely important to the operating system, especially /private/var/vm where you will find huge files, but they are needed for paging and swapping by the OS.
If cleaning up stuff in your /Users/... folder tree does not give you the space you need, consider replacing your internal disk with a larger disk, or having your DVD drive removed and putting another disk in the DVD drive's space (there are kits for that, and companies that will do this for you).
But DO NOT use Time Machine as an archive, it will delete the data eventually. -
Migrating old iMac to new one via external hard drive with Time Machine
I was led to believe this was going to be easy! Using the migration wizard in Utilities I was hoping to copy everything over via my external hard drive however it told me that it couldn't do it because the name already existed so muggins here gave it a new name. It all ran smoothly, even all my email stuff etc etc. Then Time Machine told me it couldn't back up any more because there wasn't enough space on the hard drive. What I now have is two computers on one which I don't want and I don't know how to get it back and then solve the problem of having the same name on the back-up as the computer - not sure if this is making sense. Can anyone help me please?
thanksHave a look at Pondini's Time Machine guide that might help you get back on track:
http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrationProblems.html
I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but Setup Assistant is the better option for transferring your data.
If all else fails, you can always erase the drive, re-install the OS as if it's new out of the box and use Setup Assistant. Hopefully that won't be necessary and Pondini will see you right.

you could just put VNC on there and remote into your AD server when you need to perform a password reset.
