Getting a ORA-00201: control file version 10.2.0.1.0 incompatible with 10.0

I have just shut down and restarted a production database. It will not open.. It wasn't recovered, upgraded or anything, it was shutdown and an attempt was made to restart it.
ORA-00201: control file version 10.2.0.1.0 incompatible with ORACLE version
10.2.0.0.0
There does not seem to be an spfile.
what could be going wrong here?

It sounds like someone made a change to the COMPATIBLE parameter and saved it to SPFILE (or even updated the init.ora file) only to cause a problem on restart but you say there was no SPFILE. Have you tried changing the COMPATIBLE parameter back to what it was on the previous start? Check the alert log for the history of changes and previous values.

    Hi,
I have upgraded the database from 9.2.0.4 to 10.2.0.4 and for some time compatible parameter remained 9.2.0.0.
Recently i have changed compatible parameter to 10.2.0.4.Now I could open the database with pfile but when I am trying to open database with spfile then I am getting following error:--

  • Control file version 10.2.0.1.0 incompatible with ORACLE version 10.2.0.0.

    hi;
I'm totally new to the oracle databases field...am trying to startup the database using the parameter file init.ora by using the command
    startup pfile='/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/init.ora'
But its giving me the following error:
ORA-00201: control file version 10.2.0.1.0 incompatible with ORACLE version
    10.2.0.0.0
    ORA-00202: control file:
    '/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/control01.ctl'
Can anyone help me with this error?
    Thanks!

startup pfile='/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/init.ora'You are most likely using the wrong init.ora file. Get a list of files at /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/
For the database ORACLE_SID that you are attempting to startup, there would be an initSID.ora or spfileSID.ora
e.g. if the ORACLE_SID is PROD, the file would be initPROD.ora or spfilePROD.ora
The spfileSID.ora is a binary file and should not be accessed by a text-editor.

  • ORA-00245: control file backup failed; target is likely on a local file sys

    Hello,
our RAC (Linux, 11.2.0.3.0) is rather new and we are still on gaining experiences with that system...
When starting the backup with RMAN we are getting the following error:
Starting Control File and SPFILE Autobackup at 04-JUL-12
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============

RMAN-03009: failure of Control File and SPFILE Autobackup command on ORA_DISK_1 channel at 07/04/2012 16:41:48
ORA-00245: control file backup failed; target is likely on a local file system
The reason for the error is clear ORA-00245 - in a RAC environment the location of the Snapshot Controlfile must be on a shared location.
When executing the RMAN command "show all" on each node, we are getting
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/db/dbs/snapcf_PROD021.f'; # default
    for node #1
    and
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3/db/dbs/snapcf_PROD022.f'; # default
    for node #2
When using a shared location for the Snapshot Controlfile do we still need to setup 2 different names for that file?
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/<shared location>/snapcf_PROD021.f'; # default
    for node #1 and
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/<shared location>/snapcf_PROD022.f'; # default
    for node #2
Or should we configure just one Snapshot Controlfile?
The RMAN setup for "CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO..." must be changed on both nodes - correct?
Hopefully my question is clear enough - any help will be appreciated.

No, it must be configured on a shared storage:Not really required, i've RAC setup and snapshot is configured on local storage.
Configuring the RMAN Snapshot Control File Location
The snapshot control file is a copy of a database control file created in an operating system-specific location by Recovery Manager. RMAN creates the snapshot control file so that it has a consistent version of a control file to use when either resynchronizing the recovery catalog or backing up the control file. In Oracle RAC, the snapshot control file is only needed on the nodes on which RMAN performs backups; the snapshot control file does not need to be globally available to all instances in an Oracle RAC environment.

    Hello,
guessing from the error message it looks that you are trying to execute "import data" as SQL command.
Please note that import data is NOT SQL command but it is syntax for control file. You need to create file with this syntax on server and then use command: IMPORT FROM '/<path>/<filename>.ctl'
    In a shortcut:
1.- create comma separated CSV file with your data - <source cvs>.csv
2.- upload CVS file to HANA server
3.- create the control file <filename>.ctl:
    import data
    into table <schema>."<table name>"
    from '<source cvs>.csv'
    record delimited by '
    fields delimited by ','
    optionally enclosed by '"'
    error log '<file name>.err'
    4.- execute command:
    IMPORT FROM '/<path>/<filename>.ctl'

We just discovered that two raw volumes holding control files are 96 megs and the third is 48 megs. There's some history on how that happened which, quite honestly, is irrelevant. It obviously needs to be fixed; however, I'm curious to find out how much space is actually being used. It's obvious that it's less than 48 megs or the database would have crashed. If it's 47.9999 megs, this is a "let's do it now" thing - if it's less than that, we have some breathing room - like to this saturday when the maintenance window is.
    Thanks for any hints/tips/suggestions.

    Dear dkoleary!
Please have a look at this:

You can calculate the size of the controlfile from V$CONTROLFILE_RECORD_SECTION. The size of each section is RECORD_SIZE * RECORDS_TOTAL rounded up to a whole number of blocks. The controlfile block size is the same as the database block size. You then need to double that size, because all data in the controlfile is stored in duplicate. This is needed to recover in case the instance or system crashes in the middle of a controlfile transaction. Finally, you also need to allow 1 block for the file header. There is a script called controlfile_size.sql on the Ixora web site that will do this all for you.

Some have reported success simply by reinstalling the update -- not sure of this one, but can't hurt.

  • ORA-01096: program version (8.0.5.1.0) incompatible with ins

    Hi there!
I've installed the oracle 8.0.5.0 standard editition without
any problems. afertwards i wanted to install 8.0.5.1 enterprise
    edition. so what i did:
1.) shutting down every database instance, except the listener
    which i forgot)
2.) using orainst: removed all products
3.) manually deleted the four mount points
    4.) manually deleted /etc/oratab, /usr/local/bin/oraenv
5.) inspected the oracle user environment - and thought no
    further changes needed
6.) started orainst of the 8.0.5.1 EE
    - everything was installed fine
    (net8,sqlplus,jdbc,rdbms,docs,installer,pl/sql)
    7.) root.sh (as root)
8.) launched orainst (as oracle user) to create the sid database
9.) database creation failed with the above error (read from
    $ORACLE_BASE/admin/EPY1/create/crdbEPY1.lst)
I tried to lauch sqlplus manually - same error ORA-01096.
Now i realized, that i forgot to kill the old listener process -
so i did it now. and started from step 1 with exactly the same
    result - version conflict.
question: where are (except under the $ORACLE_BASE) any
references on previously installed oracle systems - how can
i completly remove an installed oracle system ?
hmm, i wonder where an 8.0.5.0 instance should reside?
allright, please help if you know how to handle this situation
    thanks in advance

    allright!
what i did was rebooting the machine (to be sure nothing
of old oracle survives) and everything worked fine.
so what: reset is our friend
