Getting a replacement start up disk for imac

How to get a replacement start up disk for my imac?
I lost the original startup disk and the mac didn't start up, only with "?" folder.

Call Apple technical support. They can probably sell you a new set of the original disks for a reasonable fee, if your iMac did come with installation disks (Macs that shipped with OS X 10.7 or 10.8 did not come with disks).

The battery for my macbook pro 13 says "service battery".  Now I want to get a replacement but the reviews for it are horrible! Does anybody have any suggestions? I don't want to spend 130 dollars on something I'm going to have to replace in less than a year (which is what normally I been reading)  I do design work and I take my mac everywhere.  Having to always look for a plug or having to be constantly plugged in doesn't sound ideal to me.  Please help me. what should I do???

Why does it matter if it a scam????? I'll let you figure that out by yourself.  If I'm going to replace it, why should I be contempt with a battery that I have to replace within months (as stated by some people in the comments). The issue here is not if I should or not replace it OBVIOUSLY I'm going to have to before it starts going crazy.  The underlying issue is why is the replacement battery for a lack of better words " a bit crap."  It comes with a 3 month guarantee?? Is that a joke?!??!?! Some people complained it malfunction after only 8- 9 months? I'm sorry but as an Apple fan I think it's absolutely rubbish. I know there is no magic cure I'm just hoping someone shines the light on how crappy this replacement is.

I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install on my 24" Imac?

As long as you use your Apple ID to purchase it, I don't see why they wouldn't let you download the installer on one of their Macs and put it on a pocket drive.
Or, a friend with a high speed connection?
I agree with you about the delivery method, just trying to help you get what you want.

  • Start up disk for Macintosh Plus

I need to make a start up disk for a Macintosh Plus I recently acquired. I have a Mac Classic that works. I have tried copying the System and Finder files onto a floppy using the Classic but I always get the message that the files are too large to fit on the floppy disk. What files are essential to a start up disk? Can I actually make one for the plus that will fit on one disk? I am using system 6.x. Thanks for your help.
    Stu

    Stu,
First of all, remember that the Macintosh Plus only can handle 800K Mac floppies (DSDD/2DD), while the Macintosh Classic is capable of using 1.44 MB (HD). It is possible to format/write/read 800K disks on the Classic.
If necessary, you can find 800 K disk images containing system disks at the Apple download site. However, these are in a MacBinary format (.bin) that has to be decoded (via an appropriate version of StuffIt Expander or StuffIt) on a suitable Mac. The disk images then have to be written to floppies by Disk Copy 4.2 (here).

Then your hard drive is full.  You need to move large libraries to another location (like an external drive). Libraries like iPhoto, iTunes, and even iMovie Events, are very big space hogs.
    iPhoto
    Moving iPhoto Library - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229. and http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2506.
    iTunes
Moving iTunes Music from one computer to another or an external drive - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesMac/8.2/en/15475.html and HT1449 - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
    iMovie
Moving iMovie Events to an external drive to save space see the following 2 articles:
PH2302 - How to move "Events Only" to an external hard drive - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2302?viewlocale=en_US.
PH2289 - How to move "Projects" (and their associated events) to an external drive - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2289?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US.
Also note, you can save space on your hard drive by deleting "Excess" unused video in your event folder - see the iMovie 11 help menu, and select the "browse help" tab.  Under Manage Events, select "Delete all excess video from an event"
NOTE - ensure you are "Moving" the data, and not just "Copying" the data as per - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2302?viewlocale=en_US.  (hold down COMMAND while dragging to the external drive) for the best results and less chance of loosing data connection with the project

  • Startup disk  for imac g5

    Hi,

Call AppleCare.    If they don't have it, then the 10.4.6 retail installer can at least give you the ability to install the lowest possible operating system:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2541
And the 10.4.11 combo PowerPC update will help you bring yourself back up to where you currently are.
Mind you, you should backup your data prior to installing anything.  There are 10.4 compatible versions of Carbon Copy Cloner and Superduper that can make an exact replica of your Mac to a Firewire hard drive, and Firewire 400/800 cables that can connect current Firewire 800 drives, if you can't find a 400 drive.
http://www.macsales.com/ sells lots of good external hard drives for Macs.
Do not buy a hard drive with manufacturer backup software installed as that may not remain compatible through updates.
You can't get Classic installed without the restore discs.
Some Apple usergroups may have people with the correct restore discs:
    http://www.apple.com/usergroups/
Please remove the serial number from your profile.

How can I create a start up disk for a old intel core duo running 10.5.8.. Computer works fine, but can't find install disk. Want to use internal disk drive or USD flash drive.

Try calling 1-800-676-2775.  Give the serial number and thy *may* still burn you new install disks designed just for the hrdware in your system (for a fee, something like $160 per disk).  *May* is only because they may not burn disks for Leopard anymore.
If they do not burn them for you, you can buy Leopard disks off Amazon or eBay for about $200.
Have you considered Snow Leopard?.  Those disks only cost $19 (single user) or $29 (5-user license) through Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.

My iPod touch 8GB screen has been cracked. It is still under the Wal-Mart 2 year extended warranty, but I really want 5th generation! Any way to get it replaced then return it for money back or even get a discount on it??

Apple will only give you a 10% discount if you turn that one in and purchase the new one.
I do not know if the WalMart warranty covers accidental damage like a broken screen.

  • Can I replace osx 10.6 with my original osx 10.4 to reinstall os in trouble shooting a software problem? My hard drive was replaced by apple because it (2007) had bad drives in 2011 with 10.6. Now all I have is start up disks for 10.4 osx .

Help replacing 10.6 osx with 10.4 original osx start up disks . What will happen?

Do you not have a Snow Leopard DVD? To install Tiger will require that you erase the drive.
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your Tiger Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Tiger.
If you don't have a Snow Leopard DVD and wish to upgrade to Snow Leopard, then you will need to purchase the DVD:
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard contact Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service. The price is $29.00 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

  • Start Up Disk and iMac

    Hi Experts,
I bought iMac in Nov '12 & it did not come with a start up disk.
If for a question, my hard disk crashes & requires a new start up disk or requires reinstallation of the Lion OS - how do I do this?
    Thanks

Actually, the "start up disk" is the hard drive. The iMac does not come with an installation disk. Instead, you can hold down cmd-R when you reboot to use the Recovery partition:

  • Won't start from Start up Disk- Dead iMac - help!!

    Hi,
My iMac at work died today, first it crashed and then the hard disk began to spin and then the fan cut in and it sounded like a jumbo taking off. I used the power switch to turn off, waited a minute turned it back on and it then hung at the blue screen. Did this again two or three times but it still hung, sometimes in different places but always after the apple screen and the spinning thing. I then loaded the system disk and started it up, it loaded the install software screen and then crashes. I started the machine in "Safe Mode", it started properly but then crashed as soon as I tried to anything. I even loaded the startup cd in safe mode but it did the same.
The machine is very basic first generation iMac, no bluetooth, 160gb hd, 17inch 1.6gig 256 meg ram. Using Panther fully updated using Software Update. Nothing special.
Apple Care just wanted £35.00 from me before they would even tell me if I could take it direct to my local Apple Store - I say local but it would be a 100 mile round trip so I thought it best to check first.
Help, I can't even start from start up disk!!!!

Hugo, I had the same thing happen twice. The first thing I did is run the hardware diagnostics to determine if the disk had totally crapped out. This test passed on both occurrences. I then tried to repair the disk by booting from the install disk (hold down the 'c' key while booting) and using the disk utility. The first time I had the problem this fixed it. Last night it happened for the second time, this time repairing the disk failed. I had to erase the disk, reinstall the OS and upgrades and load user files from backup. One tip, don't call AppleCare unless you really want to be annoyed. I had some useless tech explain to me how the hard drive was analogous to a library, the librarian goes home at night with all the books properly in place and some kids come in and move all the books around. When the librarian comes in the next day she cannot do anything because the location of the books do not match the locations identified in her book catalog. So I asked, who these 'kids' are that messed up my disk. He said this just happens. Well this has just happened to this computer twice in a month and its old 9 months old. I have 3 PCs running that have never had this problem, one is 8 years old. One more thing AppleCare categorizes this problem as a software issue, not hardware, so it is not covered, even though it's Apple's software that failed ! You either have to fix it yourself or pay someone to do it for you. Sorry for the digression (as you can tell I'm a little frustrated with Apple), when I was just about done loading user files from backup, the iMac died, will not power backup, nothing, just dead. This is after I just spent 4 hours erasing the disk and reinstalling software and files. Guess I do have a hardware problem now.
    Good luck
