  • Electric shocks from macbook pro

I have had my MacBook Pro since november and at first wondered, why my fingers would sometimes tingle, when using the touchpad or just resting them on the area besides the touchpad. I though there might be cooling fans underneath this area, and it was vibrations i was feeling.
But after setting up my working space next to a radiator, i get small but painful electric charges, when some part of my arm touches the radiator while using the macbook. That is probably because the radiator is grounded and the tingling from the macbook pro has all along been electric discharges.
I don't know how strong these electric shocks are, as i have very little grounds for comparison - i don't go around experimenting with electricity and pain.
But is there any danger to myself or the computer or is it just harmless static electricity like what occurs when wearing the wrong shoes with the wrong carpet? If this cannot be answered from my description, then how do i gather more information?

As an addendum to this phenomena it has been noticed (on laptops with metal casing) that small electrical shocks and/or tingling can be felt if using the laptop on battery power with mains powered periferal equipment ie external hard drive, plugged into the usb or firewire ports. This is caused by insufficient grounding on the manins powered device and can be rectified by using the laptop with the three-pronged mains lead.

  • Electric shock from  MacBook Pro while charging only.

I got this painfull shock as if you have been pierce by a needle to your forearms.
The shocks are actually from the screws at the side of the MacBook Pro. You can test it by the following method while the power plug are connected.
    1. Extend your forearms and let it touch with the screws.
    2. Use a "Test-Pen" and touch all the screws. It will lighted up !! Even the "On" button has it.
You won't get it if the MacBook Pro are running with Batteries.

Actually, the users guide does state: “The AC power
cord provides a grounded connection." (page 30) and,
“For best results, always use the AC power cord and
connect it to a grounded power outlet when one is
    available.” (page 31).
The term "grounded" should be put it the simplest form of explaination so that it will be better understand for other user who might not know it.
    Just a suggestion....
"The AC power cord provides a better protection if you experience uncomfortable electric tingling sensations while operating the MacBook Pro" (page 30) and , "For best protection, always use the AC power cord whenever possible." (page 31).

"I have call my local Apple support and they could not help me much."
Why not? Not even advising you to take your computer to a repair shop for a look-see?
Personally, I would not put up w/any type of "shock" coming from a computer. If I were you since your computer is still under warranty, I would call Apple Customer Service in your country.

  • Can I take RAM from MacBook Pro 2012 and install in MacBook 2010

Can I take the old 2x4G RAM DIMMS and install them in my daughters White MacBook 13" 2010 (7,1)
    Thanks...

Your 2012 tech specs state 1600 MHz:

whereas the 2010 white Macbook takes 1066 MHz:
So, the answer would be no.

  • What Should Be Done About Electric Shocks from MacBook?

I very recently purchased a MacBook. I had not been using it long before I realized that it is not uncommon to get an electric shock when I touch areas other than the keyboard. Now via Google and this Discussion Board I find that the shocks are a known issue and that Dell also has this problem with some of its aluminum constructed laptops and that MacBook Pro users also receive shocks. Assurances are given that the shocks do not hurt the computer, but what about the user?
I find it very disturbing to think that the shocks will be ongoing. I would not have purchased the computer had I known about this problem. I admit that it may be more disturbing to some people than others, but it is of considerable importance to me. I feel it should be mentioned to customers before a purchase decision is made. Can/should the computer be returned?

That must be a strong electric current to cause a plastic-based laptop to cause electric shock. As the previous poster above me stated, as long as the system is grounded, there shouldn't be a problem for aluminium based laptops.

  • Shocks from MacBook Pro

I recently got a new MacBook Pro 15 and I am experience shocks on my for arm right along the edge. More so on the left side but I have even felt them on the right along the seam where the top meets the case. Any one else have this experience and what is Apple doing to help with this situation? It does not seem to happen whenever I am in the Apple store so no techs can experience it, but it never happened before with my old computer using it in the very same locations.

do you mean a continual shock/tingling when you touch the case? or just when you first touch the case after walking around? i get alot of static shocks when i touch my MBP after walking around/rubbing against suede lounge/etc, and that's normal cuz unlike most plastic-cased laptops the MBP has a metal case that's earthed directly to the mains earth - nothing to worry about.
but if you're getting a continue tingling, investigate further! is there anything else plugged in? you may have an earthing issue...

  • I am getting a small electrical shock from the casing on my iMac!!

For the past week or so I have  noticed that when I touch the iMac casing that there is an ekectrical current running through it. I am not getting any major shock from it but it is definitely noticeable.
Has anyone had any similar experiences?
    Thanks
    Jamie

Are you plugged into a properly grounded outlet? The aluminum case is grounded, so if you are plugged into a properly grounded you should not be able to get a shock. You can buy a low cost outlet tester from a home improvement or electronics store depending on which country you are in. The test will confirm that your hot, neutral, and ground wires are wired correctly.
Have you looked at the other electrical peripherals, lamps, desk (if metal) to make sure that they are not the source of the shocks? What else are you touching when you are touching the iMac?
If you continue to experience the issue you might want to contact Apple or the store where you purchased it for assistance.

  • Electric shocks from Macbook

I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, and what you did about it. My macbook when charging gives small electric shocks through the body of the mac. I'v been on the phone to Apple and they have suggested using a 3 pronged plug, which i do. using a serge protector, which i shouldn't have to use. They told me the magsafe adapter is not earthed if not using the extension lead, which seems mad to me. Please post comments if you have experienced similar problems and what you did to sort it out.
    thanks

"i would have thought apple would sacrific design for userability."
Without the low current leakage, Apple's products could not be sold. The design compromise is an INTERNATIONAL concern, not just Apple's.
"I dont experiance it with any plastic cased computers."
That's because a plastic case does not conduct electricity.
"It is within regulation for the voltage on the case but non the less its a big compromise to make. By rights there should be non, or low, aspecially when the product is such a high value product!"
"Rights"? I'm not following your thoughts. Too, you are not following mine. Expensive or cheap, the same design considerations are necessary.
Even in today's economic climate, Apple, all of its competitors, and all of their strategic manufacturing partners are looking for brilliant engineering talent. If you can solve this design compromise with an intelligent, economically-viable solution (they're looking for something better than "make everything plastic"), there's a job waiting for you.

  • Eye Strain from Macbook Pro (2012) Anti-Glare?

    Hi everyone,
I am thinking about buying my mother a macbook pro. She has been using macbook (2007) until today, so it will be a great gift.
Her eyes are not that good and can get motion sick easily (if that matters...), so I would like to know if any one had noticed eye strains, headach, etc from anti-glare version of macbook pro. I heard regular and glossy displays have possibility of causing such symptoms so those are out of options. So anti-glare or retina? Retina version is more than what she needs but I heard retina display could be better than anti-glare for someone. I am willing to pay retina version if anti-glare display causes eye strains while retina display does not. I would like to hear some experiences, thoughts, and advices. Taking her to store and test those displays would be best, but I would like to avoid it, since I want this to be a surprise gift. However, If I had to take her to store, how should I test which display is good for her?
    Thank you very much!

I can only tell you my experience after having used the anti-glare screen for over 5 years.  I can sit in front of my laptop for hours without any adverse effects.  I passed on the retina Macbook Pro because it seems like an abomination not to offer such a beautiful screen in anti-glare format.  The retina is less glossy than the regular screen, but nowhere close to the anti-glare in comfort (for me, at least).
I would check with her doctor, too.  It may actually be that a screen with a smaller native resolution is better for her.

You installed the "Genieo/InstallMac" rootkit. The product is a fraud, and the developer knowingly distributes an uninstaller that doesn't work. I suggest the tedious procedure below to disable Genieo. This procedure may leave a few small files behind, but it will permanently deactivate the rootkit (as long as you never reinstall it.)
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data. You must know how to restore from a backup even if the system becomes unbootable. If you don't know how to do that, or if you don't have any backups, stop here and ask for guidance.
    Step 1
In the Applications folder, there may (or may not) be an application named "Genieo". Genieo may be partially installed even if this item is absent. If it's present, select it and open the Finder Info window. If it shows that the Version is less than 2.0, download and install the current version from the genieo.com website. This may seem paradoxical, since the goal is to remove it, but you'll be saving yourself some trouble as well as the risk of putting the system in an unusable state.
There should be another application in the same folder named "Uninstall Genieo". After updating Genieo, if necessary, launch "Uninstall Genieo" and follow the prompts to remove the "newspaper-style home page." Restart the computer.
This step does not completely inactivate Genieo.
    Step 2
Don't take this step unless you completed Step 1, including the restart, without any error messages. If you didn't find the Genieo application, or if you couldn't complete Step 1 for any reason, stop here and ask for instructions.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.
If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder should open with an item named "GenieoExtra.framework" selected. Move that item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Move each of these items to the Trash in the same way:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.engine.plist
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.genieoinnovation.macextension.client
    /usr/lib/libgenkit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libgenkitsa.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckit.dylib
    /usr/lib/libimckitsa.dylib
    ~/Library/Application Support/com.genieoinnovation.Installer
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.update.plist
If there are other items with a name that includes "Genieo" or "genieo" alongside any of those listed above, move them as well. There's no need to restart after each one. Some of these items will be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
    Step 3
From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including ones called "Genieo" or "Omnibar," and any that have the word "Spigot" or "InstallMac" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Your web browser(s) should now be working, and you should be able to reset the home page and search engine. If not, stop here and post your results.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install this software. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad has a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Genieo developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
Finally, be forewarned that when Genieo is mentioned on this site, the perpetrator of the scam sometimes shows up under the name "Genieo support." He will tell you to run the provided uninstaller, while lying about what it does. As he knows and intends, the uninstaller does not completely remove the malware.

  • RF electric shock from airport on MBP APPLE PLEASE INVESTIGATE!

Other people have been posting reports of electric shocks from the case of a MBP when the mains charger is connected and battery is near 100%.
I have the same issue. HOWEVER I think that this is in fact related to the AIRPORT card. (I have a phsyics degree and I used to work as a broadcast engineer for a major UK corporation so I know a bit about RF.) The type of shock being received feels to me exactly like an RF shock. It is most noticable if you touch the edge of the case or one of the corners with the soft flesh on your under arm and presents itself as a sharp tingling/pricking/burning sensation.
The other big clue is that if you create as shock and then get a friend or colleague to disable the AIRPORT (as I did) then the shock STOPS at exactly the moment that the AIRPORT connection cuts out.
In metal macs the case and frame become part of the RF aerial and I am pretty sure that what is happening is that the radiated or received power from the 2.4ghz wireless netwoork is just getting powerful enough to cause this VERY UNPLEASEANT tingling shock.
It doesn't happen all the time and it does seem to change according to the position of the machine in the room... all of which seem to support the RF theory as moving the machine about will change the RF signal strength.
PLEASE APPLE you NEED to investigate this... and fix it, because quite apart from the fact that it makes using the MBP with bare arms a rather nasty experience if it does turn out to be RF related it could also be something of a health and safety issue.

Hi, I'm a Radar Engineer and licensed Radio expert for the last 21 years, and I am certain that the MacBook Pro is NOT an RF Hazard! I do have the equipment at work to measure it , so I will give it a quick test - just to confirm!
You could do a quick test by switching-off the Airport Card using the upper Menu bar icon

it is almost certainly a mains live-voltage leakage due to the power adapter not being connected to a good (enough) earth. Possibly your adapter will need to be checked to ensure that the leakage currents are in the safe range of 10 microamps to a couple of milliamps, but they normally all give a bit of leakage. The more powerful the adapter - tends to give slightly more leakage. it is a tiny , tiny current - but in europe it is at quite a noticeable hundred volts or so!

I get electric shock from my macbook and my headphones (iPhone 5 headphones) begins to loose the sound.
I see it as a serious problem. I've had it for three years and now it give me electric shocks when I have my bracelet close to my Macbook pro.
I have thought to report the matter, but I wanted to contact you before to see what it may be due. And what you can do about it.
Excuse my English, it is not the best.

OK.  Make sure you are using the 3-prong AC plug (not the one with two).  If you are still getting shocked I would take the machine to an authorized Apple dealer.

How can I sync my iPad 2 with my new MacBook Pro when it is already synced with my old MacBook? I am getting a message on the new MacBook Pro that says I am not allowed to sync the iPad 2 because it is synced to another iTunes library.

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPad with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.

You need a Firewire cable to run between the two Macs.  Using Utility>Migration Assistant running on your new MacBook Pro, transfer what you want (with all the preferences and such) from your MacBook to your MBP.  Here's more info from Apple.
You might have an issue with the Serial number for Office, but hopefully you have that around.
    Hope this helps.
