i want to get a used iphone 3g from gamestop to use as an ipod do i need to get a sim card to use it because i dont want to use it as a phone just an ipod i dont want to pay for phone or data service i just want to use it as an ipod

You just have to call VZW Global TS and as long as you meet all of the requirments you will be able to unlock your phone.
Must be a Verizon Wireless customer.
The device being unlocked must be active on a VZW line of service.
The line of service must be active for at least 60 days.
For converted accounts from acquisitions or mergers (i.e. Alltel, Unicel/RCC, etc.), the line of service must be active in the VZW billing system for 60 days from the conversion date.
The line of service must be in good standing for the past 60 days. Good Standing is defined as:
Balance must be current
No service suspensions or hotlines in the past 60 days.
Customer may only have one 3G SIM unlock per line every 10 months.
The customer's manufacturer's device warranty is not affected by a 3G SIM unlock as long as the customer remains with VZW.

i have a iPhone 5 and i want to use it without a Sim card because i don't want to call or text how do i do it??????

This may not help however I also tried the same on a iPhone 3GS & 4. My plan was to allow grandson to use it to play games yet prohibit any in-app purchase or random surfing, much like an older iPod would perform.
I did not have luck (or remained satisfied with what it was) so I turned off all radios and settings (Apple ID, email...) and it works with reasonable success with the SIM card in place. My new phones have SIM cards that are sized smaller so I could not reuse these cards & my provider supplied new cards each time.

Although it is possible to use your iPhone's activated SIM card with another AT&T carrier locked phone or with an unlocked GSM phone, it isn't possible to use a SIM card from another AT&T carrier locked phone with your iPhone without activating the SIM card with your iPhone. The SIM card used with the iPhone is "married" to the iPhone's IMEI number.

Hello all, I just had a quick question that I can't seem to find the answer to. Currently, I have an old 2G iphone that is in "Emergency Mode Only." I was wondering, I have plenty of dummy sim cards lying around (used to be an RSA rep, ended up collecting several old, un-activated sim's) and was wondering if there was anyway to use one of these sim cards to at least get to the home screen of the iPhone so I could use it for music, movies and when I enter wifi. When I try and do this, all I get is the "Activate your iPhone" screen in iTunes. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it doesn't seem quite right does it? Either illegally hack a device, or sell it to somebody else who IS going to illegally hack it because you no longer have any use for it.
Its a shame, I've had to swap between this phone a couple times while my 3G was out for repair. I did activate the 2G, and went through the hassle of activating, switching my rate plan, and all that good stuff. When I got my 3G back, I was able to use a blank sim card and still be on the home screen, until I did a complete reset on the phone, which brings us to the present, and the Emergency Call only screen. Seems that if I wouldn't have completely reset the phone, I would have at least been able to use it as an iPod.

If supported, contact the carrier and he will pass this info to Apple/iTunes, and your phone can be used with another SIM.

I am being deployed and had my account paused (ATT) untill I return. My service is currently off. The ATT rep said that I would need to take the sim card out when updating any apps or it might revert back and lock the phone again. If it is officially unlocked you will certainly be able to use it with AT&T, but not with Version as they do not even use sims. Yours is a GSM handset and Verison use a different version.

I am planning on getting a used 2G iPhone. I currently have an account with AT&T, and I have a SIM card with them. I don't have any of the required data plans, and I heard that you couldn't just slip in your SIM card, so my question is if I put my SIM card in to the iPhone, and connected it to iTunes, will I have to go through any type of activation process, and can I just keep my plan how it is now, or will I have to get a new SIM card and upgrade my data plan.

For the 2G iphone you can still add an old iPhone data plan for $20 per month and includes 200 text/m. It's not really unlimited anymore, it has a 5GB cap (no other provider offers a real unlimited data anymore, even if they call it unlimited), but 5GB on the cell phone besically makes it unlimited, there is no way you can use 5GB in one month on the phone. About activation, you should be able to just put you working SIM card in it and activate the phone in iTunes, it will make you to add a data plan at the time of activation (it pretty much like a Media Net + 200 Text). You can not activate it without a SIM. It's a phone, after all. The SIM does not need to be tied to active service, but it must be present and if the phone is carrier locked, it must be from the correct carrier. There is no way around it.

International sim card

I don't know about an international sim card. You can buy the iPhones unlocked in selected countries as they are legally required to sell them unlocked. Such as here in New Zealand. The unlocked iPhones can be used with any carriers micro sim cards.

You should have removed it. You cannot delete anything off the SIM, and the iPhone does not write anything to the SIM, however it does contain your wireless account info. But, since it is gone, not a lot you can do about it, but if the card is not active and disabled by the carrier then the person buying the phone will not be able to use it anyway. They will have to get their own and will get rid of that one.
