Getting a widescreen DVD from my footage - ARG!
Okay, I am trying to take 720p video and create a standard definition widescreen dvd.
In FCP2, I have the setup as DVCPRO HD - 720p30 , and I can edit and see the sequence in widescreen without any problems in the Canvas.
PROBLEM: When I try to export through Compressor and use any Apple preset for creating a DVD, the image looks "squished" and made to fit inside a 720x480 frame, thus looking rather ridiculous.
What am I doing wrong?? Help!
If you don't want it to be anamorphic, you need to specify the width and height of the output (in pixels). Otherwise, for some reason I'm not familiar with, Compressor likes to anamorphic-ize 16x9 footage. In fact, I usually give up with DVDSP and end up using iDVD to create the DVDs since it seems to be more forgiving with the video size, whereas DVDSP seems to like to check the Anamorphic box.

Help with getting high quality DVDs from AVCHD footage
Hello,
I know enough about video editing with PE7 to be dangerous, and was hoping someone could help me out.
My question is regarding getting the highest quality standard DVD from AVCHD footage. I have a Sony HDR-SR12 camcorder recording in AVCHD. I am editing footage natively in AVCHD with PE7 on a quad core system. No problem with that. However, when I export to standard DVD the quality of the video goes down drastically. (Yes, I know burning to Blu-ray would give me higher quality, but I am giving this DVD to a friend who doesn't have Blu-ray).
So far I have tried starting my project in both HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
General
Editing mode: HDV 1080i
Timebase: 29.97 fps
Video Settings
Frame size: 1440h 1080v (1.333)
Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.333)
and Full HD 1080i 30 5.1 channel:
General
Editing mode: HD 1080i
Timebase: 29.97 fps
Video Settings
Frame size: 1920h 1080v (1.000)
Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
But I see no discernable difference in the quality of my output onto DVD.
This is where my knowledge is lacking...how can I get the best quality output from my AVCHD onto a standard DVD? Is there some format I can convert to first, and then burn to DVD? Also, I am willing to break the footage into a couple of DVDs to improve the quality, but I don't know how or what to do for that.
My footage looks REALLY great when viewing from the HDR-SR12 direct to HD TV with HDMI cable, but not very good on the DVD. My footage is of a ballet recital, and I lose definition in the faces, costumes, etc on the DVD output.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
GinaHey Gina,
This may be a year late, but as I have been pulling my hair out trying to solve this problem for the last 48 hours I finally did find somewhat of a work around, but it requires Adobe PP CS4.2.
There is a plug-in here:
http://www.mainconcept.com/site/prosumer-products-4/mpeg-pro-hd-7850/features-7861.html
Which will actually output your edit as an AVCHD file. You can then burn this straight to an AVCHD using Nero 9 and keep the highquality level of your clips and not need Blu-Ray. The DVD player will need to be AVCHD capable, but I just bought one of those for $40 as compared to the $200+ of most Blu-Ray players.
Hope that helps.

Creating a PAL Widescreen DVD from NTSC footage.
First off, my iDVD is version 7.0.4
If someone could help me out with a very precise workflow it would be great, because I have a project with a one day turn around and the DVDs have to play properly the next day.
This is the (sparse) information I got from the company that needs the DVDs : "As long as the DVD is UK pal widescreen it will play on the monitors."
In the past, if shooting in NTSC and transferring to PAL, I've had the DVDs professionally transferred. With this project, I won't have time to do that.
I'm planning on shooting on a DVX100 and editing in FCP. If shooting in NTSC is going to cause problems, I can definitely rent a PAL camera instead. (And would prefer to do that than have to do too much in post to get to a PAL Widescreen DVD)
Can you let me know what sequence settings I should use (for both the NTSC possibility and the PAL possibility) in FCP, and then exactly how to set up the DVD in iDVD? I know this is a super basic question- thanks in advance for your help.
Please note: I need the most reliable, quick workflow- would rather spend some money on renting a PAL camera if that's a more reliable method than transferring footage. Thanks for the response! I just learned about an additional problem, unfortunately...
The client has OTHER footage that was already shot in NTSC that they need edited into the project. So I pretty much have to shoot in NTSC. However, there is the additional option of uploading the final clip to a server instead of burnind DVDs... any advice? Can I use MPEG Streamclip to create Pal files (let's say quality doesn't have to matter as much...) -
How do I create a playable DVD from camcorder footage?
Hi, almost total newbie here. My problem is that I'm wanting to create a playable DVD from a video I've made, but all my burns so far have resulted in DVDs which will play back on the iMAC they're created on, but not on my iBook G3. This is a worry, as I'm needing to send something playable interstate, quite urgently, and it needs to be either a Quicktime movie or a playable DVD.
So far, I've managed to get the footage into iMovie, edit the clip length and add the effects I want.
I'm then exporting the finished clip, ready to burn. Problem is, I'm completely confused about which settings to choose. Nothing I've tried seems to give me the results I want.
When I play back on the iMAC, it's fine. When I try to open the movie in Quicktime on my iBook, it invariably stalls or skips frames. Any playback it does give is terribly disjointed. The problem isn't the iBook, as I can play commercial DVDs on it.
The clip is intended for public screening, and I'm on a deadline. I've been browsing the forums and have found a few tips which might help, but nothing that sounds very different from what I've done, or sufficiently clear for a non-techie like me to grasp.
Can anybody clear this up for me?
As a side note, my daughters have been having the same difficulty, trying to burn DVD from animations they've put together in photoshop. Their issues were solved when they selected the Mpeg format to export in, although this did result in some sight loss of quality in terms of appearance on playback. ie the images were not as crisp, edges slightly fuzzy, etc.
After hours of frustration, we're just not sure what to try next.
Thanks. You should just send ("Share") the movie to iDVD from iMovie.

NTSC & PAL Widescreen DVD from Flash Animation
Hey Everyone. I have a question regarding a project I am finishing up. I created an animation in flash that is being exported to both NTSC Widescreen DVD and PAL Widescreen DVD.
I started with 1024x576 in flash and created a sweet animation with audio. (Its a 1 min animation that will be looped for conventions etc)
For NTSC
From Flash I exported a 853x480 animation and imported it into FCP to add some fades to the beginning and end and make a few tweaks. I exported out another 853x480 video and imported it into DVDSP set to NTSC Widescreen. I burned the disc and everything looks great on my screen (letterbox on my crappy home tv)
For my PAL version I followed a similar process.
From Flash I exported a 1024x576 animation and imported it into FCP to add some fades to the beginning and end and make a few tweaks. I exported out another 1024x576 video and imported it into DVDSP set to PAL Widescreen.
The thing I noticed is that the video in the viewer seems stretched where as the NTSC looked perfect.
Am I missing something here? Where did I go wrong. Should i have set the video size smaller in FCP and outputted the proper video size (NTSC 720 x 480 and PAL 720 x 576) to bring into DVDSP? I don't know why one would look ok and the other would look stretched.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
FishFish:
Try this in FCP:
PAL VIDEO
- Select Easy Setup DV PAL
- Create a new sequence and open it
- Go to menu Sequence > Settings...
- Change Quicktime Video Settings Compressor from DV-PAL to uncompressed 8 bit
- Check the anamorphic option
- Import your movie and make it fit the canvas (check the Distort option in the Motion tab)
- Do your edit
- Export your timeline as Animation.
Same for the NTSC but using DV NTSC Easy Setup and so . . .
If I don't missed something your movies must be fine in DVDSP.
Hope it helps!

When you author a Pal DVD using NTSC as your original footage do you need to convert using compressor first or can you just set up for a Pal DVD in DVDSP using your original NTSC footage?
Thanks
Jeffwhen you open a project file and change the preferences I believe you will get a warning.
DVDSP is an authoring environment. It would be better to managing the NTSC-PAL conversion in Compressor. That tool is designed for this type of work. -
IDVD is producing a Widescreen DVD for Standard 4.3 footage
Folliowing on from my recent post, I am now using professional encoding setting to produce DVDs of old VHS family footage to DVD - all working great.
Using FCE4 to edit the footage and all ok until today. Doing exactly the same for about 20th time and the DVD working on now has been produced as a widescreen DVD - but the footage was shot before widescreen was thought of.
I've tried again and noticed in iDVD09 that when encoding assets (after DVD menu option is encoded) the video clip image then goes to a widescreen - and that's when I now stop it as don't want any more coasters!!.
Also the widescreen settings are on standard etc in iDVD and the footage as a .mov file opens in QT as standard screen.
Is there anything obvious I am doing wrong or can reset. I have started a new project and the same is still happening.
Any other ideas would be really appreciated!

Poor and inconsistant DVD quality from HD footage
I have read endless discussions on how to get the best quality DVD from HD footage but here is my specific issue:
After testing and tweaking dozens of compressor settings with a short 16 sec clip of my footage, I found a setting that looked the best (though still not great). . . 90min best quality, de-interlaced, switched to progressive. I saved the setting and then applied it to the full 30min sequence but it looks like junk even before sending to DVD SP (pixelated, horizontal lines)?! I'm totally baffeled? Why does my 16 second sample look fine but my 30min sequence look awful using the exact same settings using the same footage?I have read endless discussions on how to get the best quality DVD from HD footage but here is my specific issue:

How to make an NTSC DVD from Pal & NTSC videos using CS3
Hi!
I am on CS3, on Windows.
I need to create an NTSC widescreen DVD from footage that is both NTSC and PAL. Also some of the footage is 4:3 and some 16:9.
What would be the best way to accomplish this.
I created an NTSC widescreen project in Premiere CS3. Imported all footage and arranged on timeline.
While exporting to Encore or to Media Encoder for MPEG 2 DVD - I am constantly getting the error "Failed to return video frame". Or "An unexpected error occured." I am unable to burn even and AVI. I have confirmed, that all audio and video clips are exact duration and that there is no gap between frames on timeline.
I am able to successfully burn most of the clips individually (except one from about 20 + clips) - but fails when I export them togetether.
I am racing against time, I have very tight timeline, I need to get it done today :-(
I would appreciate help from experts on:
1) What could be causing this error - how can I fix it?
2) Is the workflow I am using (combining all clips as they are), the way to go - or do I need to do something before I combine/export them for NTSC Widescreen DVD.
Thanks.
ReneI think you are starting on the wrong track with this, if your source video is a DVD disk then you should not be converting it to anything. You just need the raw mpeg video from the dvd itself. a dvd consists of VOB files but they are really just mpg files with different header information. In most cases you can even rename a .vob file to .mpg and play it with any media player program.
Anyways you should go download this free program: http://www.svcd2dvd.com/VOB2MPG/default.aspx
It's a great little simple utility, you point to your video_ts folder and it will export the vob files for each title into a solid .MPG file which you can import into premiere and edit any way you would like. without wasting time or quality encoding to a different medium codec.
I will say that CS4 is much better at handling mpg files then CS3 if i remember correctly, but see how it works for you.
Good luck! -
Compress to SD DVD from FCP 7.0
I have a project in FCP 7.0 that is made up of ProRes 422 (LT) footage that I just finished. I'm trying to get this to DVD. The footage is 1440x1080 30fps. Everything looks great in the time line. I've exported it to Quicktime twice using these settings:
ProRes422 1440x1080 30
ProRes422 (LT) 1440x1080 30
They both look pretty bad. Lots of jagged edges.
I tried to "Send to" Compressor and used the DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes settings for the audio and video. I imported this into DVD Studio Pro and after burning the DVD it's the same thing. Actually before I even import it into DVD SP it looks bad so I guess it's not anything that DVD SP is doing.
The footage is only 16minutes long.
Am I doing something wrong on my export? Do I have to de-interlace something or change a setting? Help would be much appreciated.
SteveYou could try duplicating that 90 minute preset so you can make a few adjustments. One of the settings I modify in my m2v presets is in the Frame Controls: Resizing Control: Deinterlace. I have that set to Better or Best, depending on the video. I also set the Output Fields: to Progressive. This seems to work well for my DVDs even when down converting from HD.

I converted to FCP X and need to author DVDs from the footage I shot. Since I still have DVD Studio Pro I imported the footage, authored the DVD and burned it. It won't play on my DVD player, Blu Ray player or even my Mac. In the build I get notes that say:
Note: The directory ‘/Users/melbraneff/Library/Caches/DVD Studio Pro Files/DSPPublishing’ is not a DVD-Video directory and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
Note: The directory ‘/Users/melbraneff/Library/Caches/DVD Studio Pro Files/PAR’ is not a DVD-Video directory and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
Note: The file ‘TB_Index_Bg_HDNTSC.mov_NTSC_10000.m2v’ found in the ‘DVD Studio Pro Files’ folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
Note: The file ‘DVD_01_VS_EAST_BEARS.layout’ found in the ‘HVDVD_TS’ folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
Note: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the ‘HVDVD_TS’ folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT.
I don't know if that is telling me what the problem is or not. Any help would be appreciated.FYI, DVD is always SD, irrespective of whether the authoring program is DVD Studio Pro, or something else. The only HD that DVD SP ever supported was the long-obsolete HD DVD. Nor has Apple ever integrated Blu Ray devices into their hardware.
There is a lower quality version of Blu Ray that is available in FCP and which can be burned to a normal DVD-R disk. You start with a Bllu Ray setting and select a DVD drive for the Output Device. The limitations are that it's half the bit rate and you're limited to about 30 minutes. But it is HD resolution. Give a try if you're interested.

Creating anamorphic widescreen dvds
Does iDVD (in combination with iMovie) now produce anamorphic widescreen DVDs from a 16:9 camcorder source?
I'm currently using iLife '05, and the DVDs it produces are not anamorphic widescreen, which means when I play them back on DVD Player, they have a 2" border on all sides of the screen.Andrew,
You are talking about two different issues with iLife 05 - Importing anamorphic video into iMovie HD (in iLife 05) and then burning anamorphic 16:9 DVDs with iDVD.
Many 16:9 cameras work great with iMovieHD. I even created anamorphic 16:9 DV files with both iPhoto and PhotoToMovie that also worked great with iMovieHD (05). However, some cameras do have the pillarboxing issues you pointed out and Matti referenced. I do not know whether or not this was fixed for your camcorder for iLife06.
The second issue iLife05 has is how it creates 16:9 anamorphic video in iDVD5. Actaully this does work correctly! It's only the conversion of the anamorphic 16:9 to letterboxed 4:3 for 4:3 TV's that is an issue. If you take a "good" 16:9 anamorphic movie in iMovie and transfer it to iDVD5, it does encode as anamorphic - it just doesn't set the flag right for display on 4:3 TVs.....they are full screen 16:9 anamorphic DV for 16:9 displays, and play correctly on my 16:9 plasma TV at the normal WS setting with no distortion, just like commercial WS DVDs. If this were not an anamorphic signal, I would have to use the "zoom" setting, which is how I view letterboxed cable shows. If you read David Althoff's site carefully, you will note that iDVD5 can use 16:9 encoding, but the playback flag is not forced to letterbox it for 4:3 displays.
Now I'm not saying that you haven't had the issue of getting 4:3 encoding....and your 2 inch border does suggest that! I think your main problem is the import of the movie into iMovie in the first place is creating 4:3 video, and once you've got that, iDVD isn't going to fix it.
You need to make sure that your start a 16:9 WS DV project, and then import your video with the preferences "unchecked" as Matti suggests.
And what kind of camera do you have???

How to create a PAL DVD from a NTSC camera
Hi,
I have a Canon HF10 which I have bought in the US, so it is a NTSC camera. I am living in Europe, so I would like to create a PAL dvd from the footage which I have recorded.
The footage have been shot using 1080/24p and I have imported it into iMovie. Do I need to do something extra or can I just export it and burn an dvd from iDVD?
Best regards

no surprise.. the ccd of you device is read-out 24p, but the camera records upsampled in 30i ..
24p on consumer devices is mostly marketing blabla..
in Europe, a 25p more is more interesting..
you have a NTSC device. full stop.
in iDVD, set prefs to 25fps (=PAL), relaunch iDVD, import iM project..
so, you record in 24p, got 30i on tape, anc convert again in 25i (=PAL) ... happy landing..
aside: better results in standards-conversion with free app JES Deinterlacer ... -

While using "One Step DVD from Movie" using DVD-R Verbatim ("Life Series" 4.7 16 X 120 min) on my IMac 10.6.8 I get a wide angle aspect ratio on the DVD not the standard 3X4 aspect ratio. The Quicktime Movie is is standard 3X4 aspect ratio and the video video footage is standard 3X4 aspect ratio? Advice will be greatly appreciated.
Try this basic troubleshooting fix :
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iDVD folder.
3 - reboot.
4 - launch IDVD and try again.
Personally I would not the the one step method but create the iDVD project from scratch so you can make sure the widescreen option is not selected in the preferences and you can follow this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
