Getting A Zen To

Ok after researching forever for a new mp3 player, because my old 52mb Mpio isn't cutting it, I'm pretty much decided on a zen touch mainly because of the small size and price per gig. Also I was looking for anything but an I-pod just because everyone had one and I wanted something different. after reading alot of reviews and reading on these forums it seems to me that the zen touch would be alot better if it had some of the features of the micro, ie. removable battery and customizable UI. Well I guess u can never get the best of both worlds can you? Any advice on the touch would be appreciated. :robotwink:

Actually, the Zen Touch's battery is easily replaced. I wouldn't really worry about replacing it though. By the time it wears out, you'll likely be ready to upgrade to a newer model.

  • Getting Creative Zen player to connect through amarok [SOLVED]

    Edited 12-27 to include new info
    I'm trying to get myCreative Zen player to connect through amarok but am having some problems. After some looking around I figured out the libmtp in the extra repository doesn't support this player, but the newest versions do. I made a new package for libmtp-0.2.4 and installed it since there's been some tweaks that affect this player since 0.2.2 which is in testing. I also had to recompile amarok since one of libs changed a name with the new libmtp. The instructions from libmtp mentioned udev rules needed to be defined, which was done by copying a file from the source code into /etc/udev/rules.d. That file (minus the parts relating to other players, which is pretty much the same as here):
    # UDEV-style hotplug map for libmtp
    # Put this file in /etc/udev/rules.d
    ACTION!="add", GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    ATTR{dev}!="?*", GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb", GOTO="libmtp_usb_rules"
    # The following thing will be deprecated when older kernels are phased out.
    SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", GOTO="libmtp_usb_device_rules"
    GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    LABEL="libmtp_usb_rules"
    # Creative ZEN 8GB
    ATTR{idVendor}=="041e", ATTR{idProduct}=="4157", SYMLINK+="libmtp-%k", MODE="666"
    GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    LABEL="libmtp_usb_device_rules"
    # Creative ZEN 8GB
    ATTRS{idVendor}=="041e", ATTRS{idProduct}=="4157", SYMLINK+="libmtp-%k", MODE="666"
    GOTO="libmtp_rules_end"
    LABEL="libmtp_rules_end"
    When I plug the player to my usb port dmesg gives
    usb 5-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
    usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    As my normal user amarok doesn't seem to recognize anything, and mtp-detect gives:
    libmtp version: 0.2.4
    Attempting to connect device(s)
    usb_claim_interface(): Operation not permitted
    LIBMTP PANIC: Unable to initialize device 1
    LIBMTP PANIC: configure_usb_devices() error code: 7 on line 1561
    Detect: There has been an error connecting. Exiting
    As root mtp-detect gives me a bunch of output that seems like it's doing what it should, also while it's spitting this out the screen on the player changes to say it's docked, which wasn't happening as the normal user. This makes me think it's some permissions issue. I did find things from google telling me that sometimes the user needs to be added to a certain group to use libmtp, though it seemed somewhat distro dependent. My main user is in the following groups: dbus hal network audio optical storage scanner camera users thinkpad
    However I don't think my problems are solely permission related, since even as root amarok won't recognize the player. I can use gnomad2 as root, which mostly works, though it crashes when I try and close gnomad after adding music and the player thinks it's still docked even after unplugging it. I had to use a pin to reset it just to turn it off. When I ran it from a console I got the following output at the end after the crash
    PTP: Closing session
    ERROR: Could not close session!
    inep: usb_get_endpoint_status(): Protocol error
    outep: usb_get_endpoint_status(): No such device
    usb_clear_halt() on IN endpoint: No such device
    usb_clear_halt() on OUT endpoint: No such device
    usb_clear_halt() on INTERRUPT endpoint: No such device
    The application 'gnomad2' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
    most likely the X server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
    the application.
    Any suggestions for where to go from here?

    I tried uploading onto my school website, but it doesn't seem accessable from there. However I just modified the version number from the regular Pkgbuild file from abs. What I have is:

    I've been meaning to post an update about my issues. I've figured out that when I connect the player it creates device nodes with the root group.  Some have permissions set to 666, which seems to fit with the udev rules I posted. But some of them are only rw for owner and group, others only have read permissions. As a test I tried changing the permissions by hand to 666, and I can use gnomad as my regular user, though it's buggy and seems to crash randomly (not just when I transfer files like I originally thought). I haven't been able to test what amarok does, since for some reason it stopped working this weekend and I haven't had a chance to figure out what happened. It seems there some problem with the udev rules, but I don't know much about how that works to figure out what's going wrong.

  • Is there any way to get a Zen Vision:M on a M

    I'm switching over to a Mac, and although i'll still have my PC, it will just be easier to use my Zen on my Mac. Is there any way to get the Zen Vision:M to work on a Mac? 3rd party software maybe? Any suggestions?

    If you're having trouble getting your Zen up and running, seriously, go to this thread. http://forums.creative.com/creativel...essage.id=8429?So many people have gotten their Zens to work by using these methods, and the thread should've been stickied on these boards long ago. It will help stop all the unanswered questions. Ozzey

    Sorry for the slow reply. Yes, the fixes are for those V that are not recognised when plugged into a usb port. You should take the advice from altheus:?Simple solution that should work...
    Download Windows Media Player from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/download.aspx
    With a program such as WinRAR or WinZIP extract the file "wmp-windowsxp-x86-enu.exe"
    There should be a few EXE files:
    wmp.exe ::: Windows Media Player Program Files
    wmfdist.exe ::: Windows Media Player Distribution Pack
    umdf.exe ::: User-mode Driver Framework (THE IMPORTANT ONE!!!)
    Run them in this order.
    Uninstall the previous MTP driver that has failed, and then restart.
    Connect your Zen and it should detect and work perfectly!
    PS. You don't need to have install the Validation thing for this to work. This seemed to be the one that helped most people. If that doesn't work, go to the Microsoft and look for "issues with Zen Potarble devices". It will tell you how to rollback to WMP0 (if you are using ) so that?it will recognise the V, and then reinstall MP, or just stay with 0, your preference. P.S. For this fix, you will?need to extract?the files of WMP Beta . Beta 2 and Final don't have it.Message Edited by Ozzey on 2-08-200606:54 PM

  • I can't get my Zen Xtra to work on my new comput

    Hello. For years now, my Creative Zen Xtra has been working perfectly on my old (and I do mean old, Windows 98 old) computer. However, I recently bought a new computer with Windows Vista, and I just can't get it to work on there. I've installed all the software on the CD I got with the player, but when I open the player, it says "Not connected". All my other USB devices are working, and when I connect my MP3 player, it switches itself on, so I don't think there's anything wrong with my USB ports or the cable, and I can only assume there's something wrong with the software. I already tried looking for a driver update in the Downloads section of this site, but couldn't find anything for Vista.
    Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how to solve it's If so, I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

    Do you have any security software installed, blocking these ports? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125

  • Zen Vision M: 30GB//Player gets stuck @ "ZEN vision M" lo

    Alright, this player loads, but it freezes at the "ZEN Vision M" logo (as I said in the subject). I tried formatting it, and all those other options on the boot menu, except for updating the firmware (I can't, since I do not own Windows Media Center anymore). The warranty is past it's date, and I am not sure what else to do. Any suggestions, because I do not feel like going out and buying a new one. I'd like to send it somewhere to get it fixed but I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to do that.

    branbran,
    Based on your description, it would be advisable to get in touch with support. Check the "Support" folder on your installation CD for Customer Support contact details.

  • Where Can I Get a Zen Xtra 60 GB Case/Pouch With Window??!!!!!!!

    I've searched endlessly!
    Creative does not have any in stock so I used the ''notify me when available'' option. And sadly, after writing to Creative's customer support, I was told that they don't even know when the will get more of these in stock.
    Ebay may have a couple available at times, but it is rare. And when there is one listed on Ebay, there are many bidding on it. At other times, on Ebay, there may be a used one available, but the picture which the seller uses is not the actual case being sold. Hard to trust something like that, in my opinion.
    The only site that I have found which offers a case for a Zen Xtra is www.vajacases.com. And although they have a window, clip, etc, and are VERY nice, I don't like the idea of paying around $80 for a case.
    As we all know, iPod has several cases available for ALL of their mp3 players. It is very sad that there are no options for Creative customers. Right now I am storing the player in a generic, uni'versal, case. But this cannot protect my Zen Xtra when I need to use it because the case has to be opened in order to see the display. The odds of me breaking or scratching my Zen Xtra increase each time I have to remove it from it's case. And this is a result of there being no cases available.
    Does anyone know of a case, silicon skin, or pouch that can be used with a Zen Xtra 60 GB? Or perhaps someone may know of an iPod or PDA case which could be used for the Zen Xtra?
    This is frustrating and unbelievable to me. iPod users have an endless supply and variety to choose from while I've only found two options for loyal Creative Zen Xtra customers: . Wait and see if/when Creative has more cases available. 2. Pay nearly half of what my player cost for a vaja case.
    Any help/info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time.

    i agree that it's rather annoying that it should be that hard to find a case....i like to keep all my gear secure and protected....i've been looking too....sorry i can't tell you anything you don't already know....yeah the vaja case looks really nice but way too much money...i figure our best bet is to try to get the creative one on ebay, hopefully...

  • Getting my Zen Touch to be detected by my

    I just upgraded to Service Pack 2 on this PC after installing the newest drivers for the Zen Touch, but now, when I connect ym Zen Touch to my computer it is detected (A "Found New Hardware" dialog appears) however I can't get my PC to actually install the drivers and detect the MP3 player.
    I have already tried installing and unistalling the drivers but to no avail. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

    Version 2..0 is the MTP firmware. Gi've this a shot. One of our posters, DM, did some good work in modifying / creating this utility to correct the majority of the issues Windows XP can have with it's MTP drivers.

  • Bricked me a 2nd Zen! Then I get a Zen X-Fi to commiserate...you'd think I'd learn by n

    My replacement 32GB Zen has gone the same route as my first one...stone cold FROZEN. I can only turn on the unit; can't turn it off, can't play any media, can't do much in the way of navigation. But at least I think I know how it happened.
    With my original 32GB Zen, I bought the accompanying AC adapter. I used it only once to charge up Zen #, then set the PMP aside for a couple of days. Finally took it with me to work, and didn't try using it until late in the day...discovered it was bricked. No repair tool was fixing this iced thing (and lo and behold, it didn't, despite the many times I tried).
    With Zen #2 freshly replacing dead #, I also charged it via USB for the first couple of weeks...and then two days ago I put it on the AC charger. Took it off yesterday morning, was going to add new music then discovered the bad news, it was broken in EXACTLY the same manner as Zen #(!). Not amused. This one's going back for the REFUND I should've gotten with Zen #'s return. Now I'm opening up the argument with Amazon on whether I should be able to send back the AC adapter and the clear plastic Zen case for refund (can you say 'chargeback'). Clearly not amused by this, but crap happens... I guess.
    But just to prove how SICK I am...my 32GB Zen X-Fi arri'ved TODAY. I think I'm in love again. No wall wart juicing 4 U, my (disgustingly) iPhone-looking device. Stil, it sounds phenomenal, and X-Fi does improve certain tracks even if I wonder how detrimental it'll be to the battery charge. Despite the iPhone-esque look, it does have a classy appearance, though I think I prefer the matte black back of the Zen.
    Not sure I like the nine buttons over the Zen's pad-like main control; so far it's been even easier to hit the wrong button on the X-Fi than what it was with the Zen, plus the four corner buttons in the 3 x 3 pattern don't appear to do anything (me read the owner's manual? Perish the thought...). I'll miss the blue light (the Zen X-Fi's power indicator is green) and lament that the X-Fi is a tad thicker; I can't use the Zen hard acrylic case as a result (hence my desire to return the case for a refund). Guess I have to be careful until Creative has an X-Fi specific clear case available...or it bricks like my two Zens and call it a life when it comes to Creative MP3 players. The built-in speaker is okay in a pinch, but it does sound pretty bad. Do appreciate the redesigned and relocated reset button...now I just hope I never have to use it.
    And finally... I hope that THIS Zen X-Fi model won't have inherited the stupid disconnect/reconnect issue that Zen #2 brought to the table...

    I actually bought the X-Fi a couple of days before the second Zen bricked. I was already seriously considering returning the Zen because of the disconnect/reconnect problem it was having when the battery charge was full and connected with the PC (it's as if the device couldn't understand how to correctly tell itself how to stop the charging process--very frustrating, especially with the way it was affecting XP's stability every time it went through this d/r glitch). So after looking at the X-Fi here at Creative and reading a couple of comments/reviews about it, I bought one from Amazon--where I bought the Zen from as well--to compare the two. Then the brick happened, and my mind was made up for me. Only real regret is that I never got a chance to compare their performance head-to-head.
    Don't get me wrong; I really liked the Zen, especially based on my experiences with my first 32GB copy. I just didn't expect that the official Creative AC charger would be its downfall. BTW...Amazon has agreed to a refund for the charger even though it's been nearly 60 days (twice Amazon's regular limit of 30 days) since I purchased it. They're a decent company to deal with, as long as I'm straight with them and correspond with a level of courtesy and professionalism. That must be the reason why I keep spending so much of my money with them (sigh).

  • Where can I get my Zen Creative repair

    My warantee has expired but i need my Zen headphone jack repaired, where in London can I go to get it fixed and how much will it cost?

    The only official channel is Creative support, who will still repair out of warranty, although it's likely to be expensi've.
    Failing that you can try the likes of electronics repair shops e.g. those who repair TVs etc. But they are harder and harder to find as most people just swap out the broken units and repair them thirdline.

  • Pls post ur suggestions/comments on whether i get the zen micro.

    pls post your suggestions, comments, reactions, etc etc regarding the zen micro. am planning to buy myself a hard dri've mp3 player (5gb or 4gb would suffice) and i still can't decide up to now on whether i should get the ipod mini or the creative zen micro. your suggestions would be highly appreciated.

    I have a Zen Touch. I do not have an enormous music collection, but have maybe 50 or 60 albums on the player. This is something like 6 or 7 GB. It is WAY too much for me (even this much music). I do not need even that many songs on it at once. With support via WMP0 to synchronize, you could just synch up your favorites every time, switch them around, eventually synch up Napter 2 Go stuff and still have a ton on a 5 GB player. Features on the Micro that sound flashy but I would NEVER use are the calendar, contact thing. I have this on my phone, too, and don't use it. I have a PDA--I DO use that. An MP3 player is a pitiful substitute for a PDA (and a PDA is a lousy MP3 player). I would use the Audible Audio support in the Micro. Touch does not have this. I am a huge Audible fan. I had seriously looked at a Rio Carbon, but now that the Micro is out, that would be the player I would buy if I had it to do over again. They do need to develope a way to charge your extra battery for the Micro. The ability to swap batteries is pretty stupid the way it is now--you can only charge it in the player. They need a charger for the spare. Just my opinion, but I think some people get carried away with hard dri've potential. I can't forsee EVER wanting to carry that much music around with me, especially when it will be so easy to change what is on the player once full support for WMP0 comes out. I am just not away from my home computer library for that length of time that I would want to carry most of it around with me. I vote for the Micro.

  • How much would it cost to get a Zen Xtra repaired after the warranty has expir

    Also, does it cost money to get it fixed during the warranty? I wouldnt think so, but just checking.

    it would cost very little as think about it, it uses removable batteries so too many charge cycles can be easily remedied by buying a new battery. Also, although i own a flash player and not the zen xtra so cannot verify this, it uses standard 2.5" laptop hardri'ves that are not modifyed to not work outside of the player like in the Muvo2, so that is also easily replaceable. So the two most common casues of HDD mp3 player deaths have already been dealt with. If something else brekas and you are out of warranty ibelieve you have to buy a whole new unit.

  • I can't get my zen micro to be recogni

    we wiped the hard dri've a reccently and i installed the firmware, but it won't recognize my zen micro so i can't play the songs that are currently on my mp3 player. i called creative but he said i extended my days to ask for help so he wouldn't really help me, but he said to install everything and i did(creative mediasource organizer, creative mediasource audio converter, and creative mediasource player)but in the player section, where it normally lists PC music library, music store, my computer, and zen micro, it won't say zen micro. i'm not making myself very clear. umm, basically it won't get my songs from the mp3 player to the computer(it's plugged in) and i'm leaving the country soon, so i really need my music(i can't add music to it either) so please help me! • Getting a zen touch (20gb) today. Anything I should keep in mi

    as the title says i am planning on purchasing the 20gig zen touch today. Is there any thing i should do as soon as i get it's any pointers? any problems i should learn how to deal with? any reply is much appreciated

    OK...here is some advice:
    Charge it completely (4 hours). Know that the blue light stops flashing after about 3 - 3-/2 hours while it trickle-charges. On the first three charges, try to completely discharge the battery for improved battery life.</LI>
    Load the latest firmware, if does not come with it. Do this while the ZT is plugged into the AC adapter.</LI>
    If want to load songs to it when you first get it, do it while the AC adapter is plugged in (it can be charging at the same time. Plug the USB cord into the unit first, then your PC (hopefully with USB 2.0).</LI>
    If you want to play it in your car, cassette adapters, in my opinion, sound better than FM transmitters. A straight line-in is best though.</LI>
    Plan on the fact that you will have to reset it occasionally. It only takes 0 seconds. I have had mine since Christmas, and have had to reset it about 4 times now. I had to reset it initially, and in the other cases, it seems to be when the battery is very low and right after I recharge it.</LI>
    You will not get 24 hours battery life if you are loading songs without the ZT being plugged into the AC adapter. Once you have all your songs loaded, you will get excellent battery life.</LI>
    If you have problems, there are lot of folks here who can help you out. If your ZT is defecti've, that will be very frustrating for sure, but folks here will guide you through some tips, or help you with your return.</LI>
    Some people are frustrated with CL's MediaSource. I have used WMP 0 exclusi'vely for burning and syncing with no issues. Keep it simple.</LI>
    Good luck!
