Getting an Acer external monitor to work with a MacBook Pro

I just made the switch from PC to Mac and while I'm excited I'm having a few growing pains. Here's one thing I'm trying to figure out.
Both at home and at the office I have external monitors configured. These worked well with the PC but I having some problems with the Mac. I get the screens to work together fine (i.e. I can drag things from the laptop screen to the external monitor). However, the resolution on the external monitor is grainy. I've tried all the resolution setting and can't get it to work any better.
The Mac is a MacBook Pro with a 15.4" screen and the external monitor is an Acer AL2216Wbd.

two possibilities>
1. you're using analog cable to connect to external display (via dvi to vga adapter-but that is not the case obviously, because otherwise you could set the ref. rate for 60 or 75Hz - now its greyed out) anyway, when I used this set up, I noticed huge degradation of displaying quality. kinda washed out and blurred. but not grain at all
2. but what is more presumable in your case, you're using photo background provided by apple...these pictures are grainy by themselve. and when you extend your desktop from 15" to 20" it's clear that you notice it, all the more, if the external is not widescreen, therefore background image has to be stretched and cropped even more, therefore the grain is even bigger. This is my personal experience.
try to test it. put to the background for example some gradient made especially for that purpose in ill or ps. make two versions for both screens.
thats all
good luck

  • Can I get a Dell U2410 Monitor to work with a MacBook Pro?

I rashly bought this monitor. It looks lovely but it has a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200, which I could not get with the VGA connection, and Dell do not make drivers for the Mac at all. Is there any chance of getting this monitor to work properly with my MacBook Pro? I found the Dell support site extremely difficult to penetrate, so I put the monitor back in its box and am going to sell it if I can't easily find out how to use it.
    Any advice is welcome.

I think you are using the wrong adapter. Higher resolutions require the use of a mini display port to DVI or DVI-D Dual link adapter. A VGA adapter will not do the job.
And I assume you are trying "extended" and not "mirrored" mode. What model Macbook Pro do you have?

  • How can I get an audio-in connector to work with a MacBook Pro (Mid 2012)?

I have a Plantronics headset with two cables: audio in and audio out (like the two connectors on the old MacBooks). It is pretty old and so I assumed it was for those. I have tried to get it to work with my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, but the microphone (audio in [yes, it does have a picture of a microphone on it]) cable isn't recognized by the Mac. It thinks it is headphones, and unsuccessfully tries to play sound through it. The other cable (audio out), however, successfully receives sound and plays it through.
I hope that makes sense, and I would appreciate any help .

They removed the audio input, starting from your model, you will need an USB interface, there are may, and it depends on how high of quality you need.
This works for most applications, unless you are trying to record "music quality"

  • Do all external hard drives work with my macbook pro?

I just bought an HP Simplesave external hard drive. On the rear of the package, I noticed its compatible with XP, Vista, and 7, but nothing about Mac. I don't want to open it, but I was under the assumption that all external hard drives work on all systems. I didn't think they were operating system specific.
Anyone know about this specific hard drive, and about hard drives in general if my assumption is correct?

The drive should work fine once you've reformatted it for the Mac, but whatever small portion of the purchase price went to cover the included software will be wasted, because HP will only have included Windoze software with it. And in the unlikely event that you ever need to call HP tech support, they'll be clueless about anything involving a Mac. These are the two reason why DP suggests avoiding drives whose makers don't mention anything about use with Macs.

  • How Can I Get an 23" Cinema Display to work with a MacBook Pro 15"?

A 23" Cinema Display (M8536) will not display with and adapter connected to a MacBook Pro 15" (mid 2010). Adapter used is Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. What's wrong?

  • I cannot get my HP officejet 7000 to work with my Macbook Pro?

I installed the HP Officejet 7000 and at first it worked ok however on rebooting my Macbook Pro I can no longer connect to the printer? This has happened with 2 different HP Officejet 7000 printers. Does anyone have a solution?

OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Lion systems will have the necessary printing software already installed, or will automatically download and install software when the printer is connected or configured. Do not install software that came with the printer as it may be out of date, and do not connect the printer to your Mac yet. Follow the instructions that came with the printer to unpack, install ink or toner, and insert paper.  Finally, use the instructions in this article to connect the printer to your Mac.
Make sure the printer model is listed in Printer and scanner software, which is a comprehensive list of all printer models that have compatible software for OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Lion.
    How to add a printer
Start a print job on the Mac and manage its options

  • HP Pavilion external monitor has stopped working with my Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) with OSX 10.8.3

HP Pavilion external monitor has stopped working with my Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) with OSX 10.8.3.  When I purchased the monitor a few weeks ago it worked perfectly when computer was in clamshell mode or with lid open. Now external display has stopped working.  When I turn on display it scans for signal but does not find it and then immediately goes into sleep mode.  I am using a DVI connection with the adapter for the mini display plug.  REALLY FRUSTRATING. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

    Hi lancekatigbak,
If you're having issues with the display out on your MacBook Pro, you may want to take a look at the troubleshooting steps in the following article:

Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
    -USB-to-VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.

  • What monitor best works with the MAC Pro

I'm thinking of buying a MAC PRO. What Monitor best works with a MAC Pro?

Whatever Monitor you like, exclusively. There are adapters available for everything.
Analog VGA is not a good idea. It's a Digital world. But it can be done if you want.
A TV set is not a Monitor. TV sets are for moving pictures, and may do badly with stable pictures, fine lines, parallel lines, smooth-edged text, and adjacent patches of bright colors.
Wider than 1920 needs special attention to details.

There's a new driver bundle for OSX 10.6 that you might need to install, the HP link seems to be failing at the moment but there's a version of it here: HP_Installer_Scanjet_v2.4.3_Ph4.dmg
There's a piece on the HP Forum about it here (some folks have problems installing ...)

  • Apple thunderbolt display can work with a macbook pro 2009?

Apple thunderbolt display can work with a macbook pro 2009 (mini display port? The image passes through the mini display port to the monitor, but the connections (Firewire, USB, ethernet) do not work. Can you confirm?

I'd love to get confirmation if this is the case too.   I was all ready to buy the new iMac until I found I couldn't use it as an external monitor for my DisplayPort-based MacBook Pro.  And then I was all ready to buy the new display.
I really hope Apple hasn't restricted this to purely Thunderbolt-equipped Macs. I know I'll end up upgrading my MacBook at some point but I can't do so just yet, and this means I'll have to go for some third-party display, camera, speakers etc for the new Mac Mini which is crazy.

  • What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

Looking for the best option here. What is the best external battery to use with a macbook pro retina?

You should check your date of purchase against the manufacturer's warranty
or guaranty since some of those better brands have some recourse should
they fail within a specified time period. A good reason to save dated receipts.
Since solid-state USB drives probably don't (all) use a wear-leveling software
to equally utilize their recordable space evenly, it is possible that some of these
may exhibit a failure in some sector areas due to excessive over-writing. If the
ones you use do not have such a technology or an undercounted total capacity
with a means to automatically write in other sections, you may have to consider
manually using a disk utility to zero-overwrite and reformat them occasionally.
Even so, that may only help a marginal flash or thumb drive work a little longer.
Should a camera memory card fail you still may be able to attempt with margin of
success, to +recover image files+ from it. re: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
The standard default format they ship with works well for most file types; so if
you aren't moving OS X or Mac app specific files around on a USB flash drive,
the original format should be fine. Oh, you can use Disk Utility to attempt to do
a repair; but in some cases you may have to reformat them, etc.
    {Some of the flash drive warranties or guarantees may vary from between regions;
so if you have one with a '5 Year' guarantee in the US, other rules may apply in EU,
    or when you seek to replace an item under warranty outside of where it was bought.}
    Good luck & happy computing!
