Getting AppleTV to wake up sleeping Mac Mini

I was planning on transfering my iTunes library from a G5 running Leopard to a 2.0GHz MacMini Core2Duo with Snow Leopard. The main reason for this was the feature that allows other machines to wake up sleeping computers running snow leopard.. cannot get this to work though.. argh!
In energy saver i have checked:
Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible
*Wake for network access*
Allow power button to put the computer to sleep
has anyone else got this to work? is there something somewhere else i need to set to get this to work on router (airport extreme N)? i can't even see the Mini on the network when it goes to sleep so something must not be working right.

yeah, i put it here because it's not really an appleTV question.. it's really an OS X networking question.. this is a feature of Snow leopard to wake up other clients on the network of which appleTV is only one sort of client you might want to do this from..
as i alluded to.. i'd also like to be able to have my Mac Mini wake up and be visible on the network when i want to access it from other computers on the network (i use it headless primarily.. share screen from G5).. but the Mini is not visible when sleeping (means i have to go trudge upstairs to wake it). there is not even any setting for this on an appleTV, it's all in OS X and also, i'm guessing from the response i got (Thanks JGG!), requires certain networking hardware.. so again this is not really an appleTV question and why i think it actually more appropriately belong here and not the appleTV forum.. i just though i'd put it there as well to hedge my bets on getting a response..

  • UNABLE TO WAKE A SLEEPING MAC MINI - HELP APPRECIATED

    Dear All,
We've just got a new (2010) MacMini which is being used as a central media server, and being administered remotely via ARD 3.3.2.
The only problem we seem to be having is that once the Mac Mini has put itself to sleep we're unable to wake the unit up again vis ARD especially after it's been sleeping for a long while i.e. overnight (we have the put hard disks to sleep option turned 'off' incidentally).
The only way to wake the unit up is to physically go and touch the power button on the rear of the Mac Mini, which is far from ideal... so any help or work-arounds would be greatly received.
    Thanks in advance

If the Mini is on the same network as your ARD management console, then choose Wake... from the Manage menu in ARD.
If the Mini is on a remote network, I'm looking for a solution to the same problem!
I have two Minis to manage on two separate remote networks. One is run headless (i.e., no keyboard, monitor, or mouse). With that Mini, it's set to never sleep (anything). Unless it has crashed, I never have a problem accessing it. I always log out of that Mini, which makes the Current Status "Available" and the Current Application "Login Window" in ARD.
For the other Mini, there's a keyboard, monitor,, mouse, and (frequently) a user attached! When nobody's at that Mini, I sometimes get "Unavailable" or "Offline" in Current Status in ARD (doing this for memory). If I have to get into that Mini, I have to have someone manually wake it just like you. I'd like a work-around or a set of settings to make sure that the manual wake is not necessary.

  • Broadcast a bluetooth signal to wake a sleeping mac.

My goal is to be able to drive, via screenshare, my mac-mini from my macbook so I don't have to leave a keyboard and mouse with the mini.
My problem is that I can't connect to my mac mini if it is asleep. There is a post in Discussions that talked about that but it is archived and didn't drive to a conclusion that works for me.
There were many ideas discussed but I think the most obvious was not mentioned. The most low impact thing on these macs that can be left active during sleep mode is bluetooth. Which can be used to wake a sleeping mac like with a keyboard or mouse.
So, does anyone know how I could transmit a bluetooth signal from my macbook to wake the mini?

Of course these options you mention are possible solutions to wake the mini. I could also walk across the room and push the button. But come on, what is the fun in that? I'm just trying to make my setup as cool as possible. I mean, not many people have a 42" LCD in their kitchen with a mini attached. If you got it...flaunt it right?
I was hoping that if I threw this out there I would get a bite from someone that had started hacking the bluetooth communications on these new macs. It seems that there are so many cool things that can be done once there is a better understanding of how to take advantage of that communications channel.
Thanks for your response just the same.

  • After 10.8.5 i get a no entry sign on mac mini late 2012

After doing the10.8.5 update from the ap store i get a no entry sign on mac mini late 2012
my macbook pro (2011) went ok and the 3 Mac pro towers i have used have gone ok
a second mac mini did exactly the same from the 10.8.5 combo updater
a save / format and re-install via target disk mode gives me a no entry sign on boot and booting to the recovery partition does the same.

Hi everyone I have fixed it !!!!!!
I had gotten to the stage that the screwdrivers were on the desk and i was ready to remove the hard drive from the mini to lowlevel format it on a "PC" not an easy task on a silver mac mini.
    But............
I used carbon copy cloner (trial version so free !!!!) as part of the cloning process in 10.8 it asks you to create a recovery partition on the destination drive.
so I booted in target disk mode whacked ccc on my mac pro and when selecting a clone of the 10.8.5 system from the mac Pro it said the recovery partition on the mac mini hard drive was corupt and re-created it !!
As if it was magicly re-born my mac mini is now operating as if nothing had ever been wrong!
Does anyone know if there is an app for repairing the recovery partition? may need it on the other mac that "died" doing the 10.8.5 combo updater.

  • Screen Sharing and Sleeping Mac Mini

    Hi,
After months of nagging from my IT colleagues I have just bought a Mac mini, just upgraded to Leopard and am just getting to grips with how it functions. (very impressed to date now I have a "proper operting system" :o) )I am using it in my lounge connected to my Plasma TV. I have enabled Screeen sharing and can access it succesfully from my windows machines using VNC viewer free edition. The colour and picture quality is excellent however it won't allow me to connect when the machine is asleep. I also have Vine VNC server which I am sure would go to sleep and let me connect using VNC however it doens't seem to sleep with Vine anymore and I also get two icons appear in the dock. The screen quality appear to be much better with Screen sharing so I'd rather use that than Vine. I could switch sleeping off howevere I don't use the Mac and would like to let it sleep. I was a bit nervous about posting here for the first time incase I get "abuse" but my other Mac users assure somebody will know the answer. I have some other questions so I'll post these on the site in the relevent areas now I'm registered.
    Cheers in advance.
    Clarkerz

Clarkerz...Wondering the same thing. No "abuse" from my direction. This is a great question I am also trying to find a solution for.
I often work remotely between my home office work horse (g4 tower) and my 17" MacBook Pro. Files are often duplicated between the systems...and having one access point (screen sharing) is great. However, I am wondering the same thing. I hate to leave the slave computer (in most cases this is my G4 tower) on permanently in the event I happen to need to share in.
Before Leopard, I was using Astro View / Share. I am sure some will wonder...why that program. Well, long story short, pain in the arse, but it worked...althoughbeit not as well as Leopards built in screen share. Though Screen Share is a much better solution...I still wonder about the "sleep" issue. Hate to leave it on permanently.

  • Monitor won't wake up with Mac Mini

I am using a Mac Mini (late 2012; OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2) connected via HDMI to a Samsung Syncmaster S27B350 monitor.  When the Mac wakes from sleep, the monitor will wake up for about 5 seconds and then go black.  If I unplug the monitor from AC power and then plug it back in and turn it on, it works fine.
I have read several threads but haven't found a solution.
I have the monitor set to PC mode.  Any suggestions?

I have a Mac Mini Server 2012 with OS X 10.8.2 and an Belkin HDMI to DVI cable to an AsusMW221u.  Whenever the Mac Mini sleeps, either logged in to a user, or still on the log-in page, the display will either show all-white or all-black.  If I move my finger on the Magic Pad, a little rectangle, like the size of the Apple Logo, will wipe on the screen leaving non-contiguous rectangles on the display. Behind the rectangles I can see the log-in user circles and the password box.  Once logged-in, the screen refreshed and problem disappeared, until next sleep time comes.  I think it's the Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver problem.  Similar situation happens very often in Windows based notebook and PCs.

  • Sleeping Mac Mini

    Hello, how are you.
What happen if I put Mac Mini to sleep (rest) all the time (always)?
    What are about secondary effects?
Thank you. Have a good day.
    -HREsquivelO

There's nothing wrong with setting a Mac mini to go to sleep, and mostly this works perfectly well. Indeed, one of mine, used as a basic media server, is set to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and is only woken again when required - sometimes days later. The system is never shut down - just left to sleep - and it has had no problems whatsoever.
Sleep can be disturbed by USB devices in particular, so if the system doesn't sleep when you tell it, wakes when it shouldn't, or fails to wake at all, these are not uncommon issues and the often recommended starting point for resolving them is to disconnect all USB devices and see how that impacts on the sleep pattern. Since most systems don't suffer these issues, I'd say don't be concerned at the possibility unless you suffer symptoms of that sort.
In every other way, setting the system to sleep is perfectly safe and sensible operating procedure. There is no risk to the system in doing so.

  • Will touch FaceTime call wake a sleeping mac

I've tried searching but can't find a definitive answer to whether a FT call will go through and ring on a sleeping Mac home computer with the FT app. It doesn't seem to do that on my Mac air. Of course if I schedule my air to wake up at a certain time and call at that time it will work. Is there some setting that can be used?
    Thanks in advance for info.

THAT WOULD BE SO SWEET....I just tried it with Mountain Lion thinking it can be interrupted.
can a mini hack in TERMINAL allow it to happen ?

  • Monitor does not come out of sleep Mac-Mini Mini-DVI to Dual  DVI-D cable

I have an August 2009 Mac-Mini that I'm using with an Apple supplied Mini-DVI to DVI adapter along with a DVI-D Dual Link Cable connect to a Sceptre X7XV-Naga+ LCD monitor.
The monitor is going into sleep mode on its own with no way to disable this feature on the monitor itself. I've disabled sleep mode on the Mac-Mini in the power setting in System Preferences.
When in sleep mode and I move the mouse or press a key, the monitor will not come out of sleep mode. From other posts, I read that the issue might be that I wasn't using a Dual-Link DVI-D cable, so I bought one and installed such a cable. That has not resolved the problem. The monitor will not come out of sleep mode. When I have the monitor connected with a mini-display port to VGA adapter instead of a DVI-D cable, it will come out of sleep mode every time.

I know it's a year later, but I'm not finding much through search.
I have the same exact problem.  Difference being I'm using an iMac with 10.7.5.
Same video board and monitor - ATI Radeon HD 6750M video card connected via DisplayPort to Samsing S24A850DW.
I've tried two different mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables and no change.
I think I read that 10.8.3 might fix the issue.  Anyone that can confirm that, or has another solution?

  • How do I get the hardware profile on a Mac Mini

Please excuse my ignorance, PC user but I do run Linux. I have a Mac Mini and can not relate to the way Apple does things yet. How do I get a hardware profile so I know what hides within the cute little box?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Clicking through the "About This Mac" window opens the System Profiler application which lives in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder. You can open it directly from there instead of going through the window, if you like.

  • Can not for the life of me get printing to work on my mac mini duo core

I have a photosmart 7550 and laserjet 1012. And I can't get my mac mini to recognize either printer. This has been driving me nuts. I was a long time mac user in the 80s and early 90s. Switched to Windows. Just switched back with the mac mini (intel duo core). And I hate to say it, but it's just been an awful transition. My wife, which hates me that I made her get rid of her windows machine and switched it with this mini. If I don't get this mac printing I'm going to have to get rid of it.
I've installed/reinstalled drivers from HP, removing the library/printer/hp directory. Guten-print. Nothing is working for me.
    Can anyone help me?
mac mini duo core   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If the printers are not being recognized by the Printer Setup Utility, it may mean that the printing services has not started up. You can check for this by using the Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities). Set it to show "All Processes", then click on the "Process Name" tab. That will sort the running processes in alphabetical order. Look for an entry for "cupsd". If you find no such entry, printing services is not running. You can probably turn it on by enabling Printer sharing (System Preferences-->Sharing).
There should be a driver for the Laserjet 1012 that will be useable once you get the computer to recognize that there is a printer there. This according to the Apple article listing the drivers included with Intel Macs . Unfortunately, that article does not list a driver for the 7550. According to HP's support site, they do have drivers for Mac OS X 10.4. There is no entry, however, for the Intel Macs. I think you will have to wait for HP to release Intel drivers for the Photosmart printer.
