Getting back my saved emails

I had an IMAP account that I no longer have access to. However I had many email messages from that account saved on my Macbook. I don't know what I was thinking, but I deleted the account in Mail. I then realized that I wouldn't be able to read my saved messages anymore. So I restored the directory ~/Library/Mail/imap-{username}@{domain}.com. Mail still couldn't see it. I then changed the directory to ~/Library/Mail/imap-XXX{username}@{domain}.com and recreated the account. Of course since I no longer have access to the email account it doesn't connect (although that didn't keep me from seeing my stored email before I deleted the account). I then deleted the newly created ~/Library/Mail/imap-{username}@{domain}.com and renamed ~/Library/Mail/imap-XXX{username}@{domain}.com to ~/Library/Mail/imap-{username}@{domain}.com. I still can't see my saved emails.
I would actually prefer to have this mail show up in "ON MY MAC" but I can't figure out where that stuff lives. What is the directory for "ON MY MAC"? Can I just copy the former ~/Library/Mail/imap-{username}@{domain}.com there and read my emails from Mail, delete the old account and be done with it? If not, how can I restore my saved emails to be accessible to Mail?

what kind of backups do you have? if they are Time Machine backups you can restore what you need from Mail interface using TM. just start TM while in Mail, scroll back in time and restore what you want. restored stuff will be placed in a separate mailbox in "on my mac" section.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:

ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely. Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

How can I get back into my email account?

I hope there is a fairly easy solution to this because I'm not good with computers. I cannot receive any emails on my .mac.com account as the reason states "reason for failure 550.5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias". Also it does not recognize my password. Thank you Long Lane, but my software is uptodate, and although I have reset my password, still nothing. In "Accounts Info" it lists incoming server as mail.mac.com (which it won't let me change). Is that what it should say? Also "description" is same info as email address. How can I be an illegal alias, I'm the only one that uses the computer

I am running on 4.2.1, and have been for several weeks. I've never had any problems with my .mac mail account before, but after I rebooted my phone this morning (for an unrelated problem, my .mac account disappeared from my phone. I checked in settings to make sure it was still set to "on" and it was. My hotmail and gmail accounts were still up and running, just not my .mac account which is my primary account. Does anyone have any great ideas on how to fix this problem? I can't afford the $29 it would cost to call support. Thanks!

Go to the Mail/Accounts preference pane and add the account back again if it's not there. Next check the System/iCloud preference pane to make sure you have Mail checked.

The only alternative to what you ask and what sberman tells you is to double tap the home button when you are done with the web and select the mail app from the multi-tasking bar. That will bring you right back to the mail message.

Telstra "Get Back In Touch" - can be so confusing sometimes

"Get Back In Touch" email is a great idea of re-contacting the Telstra consultant after an issue etc has been addressed (it saves a lot of time repeating oneself all over again!!). However, can be more than confusing if customers phone Telstra to (a) Discuss more than one issue requiring different departments and/or (b) are referred to another technician re. the same issue. In both these instances, the customer receives more than one "Get Back in Touch" email - too confusing! I don't know about anyone else?? but I can never work out what email refers to what conversation I had or with who, and end up deleting them all. My suggestion is - Can't there be a simple word reference stating what the call was about on these emails to make the above much easier??? e.g. "Thanks for your time today. I hope I’ve addressed everything regarding your TboxShould you need to follow up, your reference number isINT x-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx" OR "Thanks for your time today. I hope I’ve addressed everything regarding connection problems with your internetShould you need to follow up, your reference number isINT x-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx" Any other thoughts, anyone??

Hi Dr. Qwerty, I think your suggestion plus my suggestion added to these emails would be a grand idea!! At the moment, I have 4 "get back in touch" emails sitting in my inbox as I contacted Telstra recently regarding my Tbox and my Bundled Plan. The Tbox issue was referred to another consultant. Unfortunately, I haven't got the remotest idea which email is in reference to what topic , so will be deleting all of them. There has to be more customers out there who have experienced this, surely?? Thanks Qwerty

I have a Mac Book (2006) All my saved emails for two and a half years have the same date. How do I get the original dates back?

From the "date and time" I tried to drag the month and year to my menu bar. It did not stay, so I did it several times, but to no avail. I closed the window and went back to my Thunderbird email only to find that the date I tried to use became the date in the "date received" column of all of my emails from back to 2011. I changed the date a few days later, and then the date changed on all of my emails. I would like to undo whatever I did to the dates so that the emails show when they were originally received. I did manage to get "the order received" which helps a little, but I cannot see the original dates.
I have checked "Set date and time automatically" but it doesn't change the dates on my saved emails.

I at first thought it might be a Mac thing, but I couldn't find a solution. I realized that the date only affected my email, so then I thought it must be a Mozilla problem.

do you have a time machine backup or any other device that contains the emails you are now missing?
if so you can get them back that way. otherwise there isn't a way to retrieve them from the mac if they are nowhere on the HD.
also check on the email website to see if the messages are still there as well.

Did you have time machine set up? Maybe you can retrieve them from a backup.

this is a follow up from the profane post earlier....
i have done this twice in two other posts..
here is my problem.. i started off trying to update itunes, it failed twice and said i needed to install manually via tools.
the only place to get to tools is the pop up box that appears when you click check for updates.. if there is an available update then the pop up shows up with the quick time and itunes files to download. so i finally figured that out. i clicked on tools and manual update, four files were saved to a file. Apple mobile device support, another one similar, itunes, and another one i cant remember. I only downloaded the itunes file seeing as though thats all i needed to accomplish in the first place.
so then i restarted my computer bc you need to reboot and then reopen itunes for update to take effect. once i have itunes back open i plugged in my new 5s which i am trying to sync to my computer to get all my stuff back bc i lost my previous phone over the weekend.. once i plugged the phone in an error stating i needed to unistall the apple mobile device support and itunes and then reinstall. well i dont know where those files were originally stored on my computer AND since my itunes was updated, just not the other 3 associated files, when i click check for updates it says its up to date and then pop up containing the quick time and itunes does not pop up thus i cant get back to the tools tab to manually save the 4 files again.
so i was just going to uninstall itunes all together and then i thought well what happens if it erases all my photos apps songs etc... which would defeat the whole purpose in the first place of me trying to sync my new phone to get all my stuff back.
so i literally have no idea what to do at this point.. if you have read this you are probably just as confused as me...
