I have NO photos on my Ipod Nano.  I select "Photos" and the Ipod goes to a blank screen with the msg "No Photos" at the bottom.  There must be some other file missing.  Itunes won't connect to the Ipod, I keep getting the same error over and over.  It would be nice if it told me what file is missing.

Hmm.  It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • Unable to delete data files from my Ipod if used as data storage...

    Hello everybody
I bought months ago an Ipod Nano 8GB. I've got an issue when i use it as disk storage i'm not able to sort out. I've checked all the topics but i cannot find any solution.
Example: I use the Ipod with the option "Manually manage music and videos". I put audio and video files on my Ipod through Itunes, then i put also some files on my Ipod as normal data files through my Mac Finder (Easy, i drag VLC, JPG files etc. from folders to my Ipod). The Ipod/Itunes summary page shows (Correctly) the capacity column colored in blue (Audio), video (Purple) and orange (Data). No probs when i transfer data files to another computer.
Problem: when i delete the data files from my Ipod (Through finder) the orange column doesn't disappear (I have no problems if i delete audio/video files via Itunes) and although i've actually deleted all the files if i try to add some other data or videos/music files to my Ipod, Itunes says that there is no space available in my device. It's very strange, i check and double check all the options but eventually i have to restore my Ipod all the times and (Pretty annoying) add all my files again.
It seems that although i sent my files to the trash bin, Itunes (Fully updated) doesn't recognize the change.
It'd be great if someone can help me out as it's very important for me to be able to use my Ipod as disk storage, thanks a lot!

It seems that although i sent my files to the trash bin, Itunes (Fully updated) doesn't recognize the change.
Empty it from the Finder menu or by control-clicking it in the Dock.

  • Is a copy of .xml file on the iPod too? If so, how can I copy ONLY the .xml file to my computer and NOT have to copy all my music files too?

I had to re-load my OS (Windows XP Pro) from a HD snapshot via Acronis True Image Server. I save my OS on my C: drive and all my data files on my D: drive.  So when I re-loaded my OS, I still have all of my music files intact.
I have re-loaded the OS before and had to re-create iTunes library which I did by doing the follwing:
    1. cut & paste .xml file in iTunes folder to desktop
    2. delete .itl file in iTunes folder
    3. import .xml file through iTunes  file>library>iport playlist
    4. navigate to .xml file on desktop and import
This worked last time I re-loaded my OS but not this time for some reason.
So I'm wondering if there is a copy of the .xml file on the iPod itself in the iPod_Control folder that I can copy and paste to my comuter desktop and import via the above steps?
I have seen all kinds of solutions on the web that include copying the music files from the iPod to the computer.  I don't need to do that.  I have the music files.  I just need the .xml file so iTunes can talk to my iPod (5th Generation - 30G).

Backup your music library, that is the only way to ensure it does not go missing through theft, damage, operator error, machine breaks, upgrades go wrong, operator goes wrong .........

    Hello Esther,
the problem seems to be that the temp folder of the target Integration Builder system can't be found:
'The system cannot find the path specified
    at [..] FileAccess.getTempDirectory([..])'.
You'll experience the same problem if you try a file based import or export within the Integration Builder directly.
I would recommend to continue the search there. You could check if the environment variables (for Windows: TEMP and TMP) of the OS of the system with the target Integration Builder to an existing path. Check also if the WebAs can access this path.
    Good luck

So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn’t find any files on the iPod anymore. However when you look in the settings it displays that ~roughly 90 GB free space is available. Seen the fact that I had about 60 gigs of music this doesn’t seem like a coincidence and I think my music is still somewhere on the ipod but the HDD isn’t recognizing it anymore.
I’ve tried resetting it, and resetting it to factory settings, which didn’t work. When connected to a desktop it won’t be recognized by iTunes, it displays an error message that the iPod cannot be read and that I have to reset it to factory settings.
I’ve spent some time researching this problem yesterday and I ran into a myriad of vaguely similar problems didn’t really offer any help. Currently I’m thinking that formatting the iPod might work, and restoring the software afterwards. However this is a rather bold strategy so I’d like to consult you here first.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for the info, with formatting my iPod I managed to connect it to iTunes again.
However..in the page you linked to there is a section about how transferring large amounts of data can dump your library. That seems to be the problem in this case. It won't even allow me to transfer more than 2 gigabytes of music per sync, if I go higher it will dump everything again. Having over >60 GB of music in my library, this is disastrous to say the least.
Do you think that there is any other solution besides the method you mentioned involving Smart Playlists?

  • IPod Updater error - "there may be open files on the iPod"

I'm trying to help my nephew fix his scroll-wheel 10 gb iPod before he embarks on a long flight to India. When he plugged his iPod into his new iBook, iTunes launched, but wouldn't let him copy any purchased music to his iPod. It told him that he needed to upgrade his software. I've seen from the posts here that this is not uncommon.
We went ahead and tried, but the only option was "restore", "updated" had been grayed out. Since he had already copied all of his music off of his iPod onto his new iBook with Senuti, we opted to restore. This failed and we now get a message from the updater saying that "an error occured. There may be open files on the iPod".
If I disconnect the iPod from the computer, the screen displays a folder with an exclamation point and then alternates with an Apple logo. It looks like it's in a loop trying to start up, but then goes to the folder again, then goes blank for a second and displays the Apple logo, etc.
If I plug in via USB, for a brief second I get the "do not disconnect message", but then it goes right to "OK to disconnect". After I disconnect, the "OK to disconnect" does not go away, I have to reset in order to get back to the alternating folder with exclamation and Apple logo.
If I plug in via firewire, the iPod does mount in Finder and iTunes recognizes. It give me the message stating that version 2.3 is available and do I want to update. If I choose "cancel", the iPod docks in iTunes and I can manually add songs to the iPod (but not purchased music). But when I undock, it goes back to the alternating folder and logo.
If I say I do want to update, the updater launches 11-17-05, but gives me the "there may be open files" error message.
Anyone had this problem and/or know how to fix it? Another factor to throw into the mix: I'm pretty sure my nephew was using this machine with a PC and everything we've tried together has been on the Mac. I've tried docking using Virtual PC, but it doesn't recognize the iPod at all, using firewire or USB.
Does anyone know if I SHOULD be able to update or restore this iPod using a Mac?
Also, I've tried this on both my nephew's iBook and my Powerbook. Both are running 10.4.3 with iTunes 6.0.1.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am having precisely the same issue.
I am running Adobe Acrobat XI Standard on Windows 8 Professional. All updates have been applied to both.
(I have 4 other computers with identical configurations where this problem does not occur.)
In the problem machine (and a 2nd computer with the same issue) I can easily open the file using a UNC path, e.g. \\server\h\filename.pdf in Adobe Acrobat.
Using the drive mapping, net use h: \\server\h, I cannot access the file H:\filename.pdf.
I can't open H: from within Adobe Acrobat either, not just the PDF.
I can open any other file on that drive with any other program.
I can open \\server\h\filename.pdf and the H: drive from Foxit Reader installed on the same computer.
The specific problem is that Adobe Acrobat XI can't open or see a mapped drive by drive letter.
    Any ideas?

  • When I download itunes, it says that Ipod Service failed to start. I checked the services under task manager and when I try to start it, it says access denied. How to I get access and for the ipod service to start and run?

Please help. My ipod classic could not be recognised by itunes when I connect my ipod to PC. Previously it has been recognised before I updated. This was a while ago now and so I removed all apple files and re installed the latest itunes but am having the same problem.
When I download itunes, it says that Ipod Service failed to start. I checked the services under task manager and when I try to start it, it says access denied. How to I get access and for the ipod service to start and run?

Some anti-virus programs (e.g., McAfee) have this rule that can be invoked under the "maximum protection" settings: PREVENT PROGRAMS REGISTERING AS A SERVICE. If that rule is set to BLOCK, then any attempt to install or upgrade iTunes will fail with an "iPod service failed to start" message.
If you are getting this problem with iTunes, check to see if your anti-virus has this setting and unset it, at least for as long as the iTunes install requires. Exactly how to find the rule and turn it on and off will vary, depending upon your anti-malware software. However, if your anti-virus or anti-malware software produces a log of its activities, examining the log may help you find the problem.
For example, here's the log entry for McAfee:
9/23/2009 3:18:45 PM Blocked by Access Protection rule NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe \REGISTRY\MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\iPod Service Common Maximum Protection:Prevent programs registering as a service Action blocked : Create
Note that the log says "Common Maximum Protection: Prevent programs registering as a service". The "Common Maximum Protection" is the location of the rule, "Prevent programs registering as a service" is the rule. I used that information to track down the location in the McAfee VirusScan Console where I could turn the rule off.
After I made the change, iTunes installed without complaint.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

    Many thanks for any advice.

You don't need conversion programs, iTunes can copy most of your content over to the iPad via the file sharing section, and some apps also support Dropbox, email attachments, transfer via your wifi network. There are a number of apps that you can get that support Microsoft office file (microsoft don't make an app versions of their software) e.g. from Apple there are Pages (word support), Numbers (excel) and Keynote (powerpoint), and from third-parties there are apps such as Documents To Go and QuickOffice HD

  • Getting video files to your iPod

    Q. How do I get video files to my iPod?
    A. First of all for DVD's and the like, you'll need a video capture device(a.k.a. a video card that usually comes with a program that allows you to record video from a number of sources).
Once you've recorded your file which might not be Mpeg-4 or H.264 but will probably be AVI or WMV, what I recommend at this point is the iPod video converter from Xilisoft. this powerful little tool will enable you to open just about any file(WMV,MPEG,AVI...and so on) and convert it to and iPod compatible format. The plus of this program compared to others is not only can you download a trial version, but you get five full minutes of recording without any watermarks(basically print over your new recording that usually says "trial version" or something that can only be removed by purchasing the full version of the product.)
Third, for editing this is where you can put the 40 bucks you spent on quicktime pro to some use. Now you should be able to open your file in Quicktime without any problems and edit your video for final viewing. (That's if you need to of course. Some video capturing devices don't allow you to do editing.)
Lastly, if you can't be bothered with all this editing stuff, drop your new video file into your iPod in iTunes, right click the file once iPod is updated, select "get info". One of the tabs should allow you to input the point or time you want the file to start playing.

They first need to be in iTunes. Find them on the music store under podcasts.
Once they are there, connect the iPod and go to edit-->preferences in iTunes. Clcik the iPod tab. Then click the videos tab. Make sure update all videos is selected. Then click the podcasts tab under the iPod and make sure that update all podcasts is selected. Click OK.
If they are not in the right format, then right click an epsidoe and go to convert selection for iPod. You can highlight multiple episodes and convert them at once.
