Getting Disk Utility to copy a DVD

I created a DVD copy of a laserdisk on DVD+RW, and it works. I wanted to use my Mac to copy it to a DVD-R for my permanent backup, so I connected my Mad Dog USB drive to my iMac, put in a brand new DVD-R blank in it, and put my movie into my iMac's drive (after telling OS X to do nothing when I insert it).
I opened Disk Utility, read the help, and tried dragging the DVD to the Restore "Source" field. I can't drag it there, and I cannot drag the destination to the "Destination" field.
After some trial and error, I was able to create a new image on my desktop as a .cdr file. But I can't drag it to the source either, and when I look for image, that file is greyed out.
How do I copy this unprotected DVD?

Click here and follow the instructions.

  • Using Disk Utility to copy Application DVD or Cd's

I've always used Toast to make a copy of a software CD or DVD that I've purchased. I store these offsite. Some DVD DL (6-7GB) have problems in Toast. I've started to use Disk Utility - Disk Image. The question I have is should I use read only or DVD/CD master?
Before you ask, the license policy on most/some software allow the purchaser to do this.

    <font "size=+1">Duplicate a CD or DVD
    1. Insert the DVD/CD;
    2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
    4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
    5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
    6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

  • Can't get disk utility to work with leopard - iBook running super slow

I have an iBook G4 and it's running ssuuppeerr slow but I can't get disk utility to come up after I press C down. I don't know if I'm pressing it at the wrong time but I restart with the C pressed and it gets to the apple screen and it won't go anywhere else. It will restart normally but not with the C key. I've been trying for an hour and I can't get it to get to disk utility!
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you want Disk Utility on your iBook or do you want Disk Utility on your install disc?
For Disk Utility on your iBook, go to Finder>Applications>Utilities and look in the Utilities folder. You will find Disk Utility there, and drag it to your dock where it will be handy to have it.
For Disk Utility on your install disc, insert the install disc and then restart and hold down "C" as you boot up so that you will boot from the install disc. Then choose your language, and then look for Disk Utility in the menu bar--I don't remember if it says "Utilities" or "Disk Utility". If you need to repair your startup disk (i.e. your internal hard drive), you would boot up from the install disc to do this.
However, I am wondering if you have enough RAM to run Leopard. You will get a big boost in performance if you max out your RAM. Leopard will run best if you can put a 1 GB RAM stick in your RAM slot.
If you want to repair permissions after installing and updating Leopard, you can do this with Disk Utility on your iBook. Repair permissions until there is nothing left to repair.
If you have more questions, please post back. Also, which ibook G4 do you have?
    Good luck!

  • PG G4 struggling, can't get disk utility to start....

Any time i start itunes, or system preferences my computer just gives me the spinning beach ball for quite a time. Sometimes the app will launch, other times it won't. When i try to force quite applications, half the time it won't shut the app down..
with that said, i'm trying to get disk utility to go and see if there are any issues there, but it won't launch.
Would starting in 'safe mode' work in this task? How would a start my computer in 'safe mode'...
    anyother suggestions are appreciated

You can start in safe mode by rebooting and holding the shift key down.
There are several possibilities. As already mentioned, your hard drive could be dying. However, first I would want to know how much free disk space you have. You want 10%-15% free space available for the operating system.
Running the Apple hardware test would be a good diagnostic. Insert the original OS X disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that tell you anything?
To boot from the first OS X disk, hold the C key while rebooting. Then you can run Disk Utility and repair the disk and repair permissions, while you're at it.
The beach ball can occur for a number of reasons. If your hard drive checks out OK during the Apple hardware test, and you have enough free space, you might want to run OnyX, which is available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english/apps.html. Run the cleaning and maintenance tasks, and see if you still have issues.

    Hi

    Thanks

    Hi DaddyPaycheck
I am sorry for being late to reply you, i just was very busy.
Actually, yes, I've tried many types of DVDs, the last one was " Imation DVD+R DL " & it's failed.
In fact, I was trying to burn SNOW-LEOPARD using Disk Utility and others applications, non of them worked.
So, I think the problem isn't in the type of DVD.
I have used another computer to burn the SNOW-LEOPARD and it's done, But i faced a new problem
that is the system doesn't read the DVD and it doesn't show the option of choosing which system I
    want to boot ?
I really don't know wether the problem in the SNOW-LEOPARD file that i downloaded or it's is in my
system or in the DVD reader of my MACBOOK Pro.
    Really need help !

  • Disk Utility to copy CD to CD

I'm having a very hard time trying to copy a CD to a CD. I want to make an exact duplicate of a CD with the same file structure which I believe has 2 partitions. Is there an easy way to do this within the Disk Utility feature? I'm a recent switcher from windows to mac, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here, but I keep making coasters. Please help.

Panther and Tiger both are the most efficient, stable achievement of Mac OS X.
Tiger has even more more features and hidden goodies, it is also quicker to boot and to install, with a better, easier install DVD.
There is also this good feeling, that it is enhanced all the time by developers, when Panther will probably get no (or very few) new updates in the future.
Tiger of course will always run the latest versions of Apple applications (but sometimes one can prefer an older version for some reason).
Spotlight makes a huge difference in how you organize your files: Panther for that matter belongs to the good old past of arranging and organizing your files, folders, work in general, by hand. With Tiger's Spotlight, you can even be negligent and messy, and still be able to find anything easily, among your files, folders and mails.
And Panther's better and easier search feature (Find ⌘F) exists as third-party apps anyway.
If you just need a reliable Operating System to run some applications, and care more about your work than about the OS itself, then Panther is already great.
If you just strongly feel like trying Tiger, if you keep on thinking of it often, well buy it. You won't regret it IMO.

  • Disk Utility to Create a DVD from an image

I get stymied when I try to us a diskimage as a source to make a DVD. I have a new DVD-R and it always wants to erase the disk, I cant get past that screen after I choose the drive as the destination. It wants to erase the disk but says it cannot erase this disk. There is noting in the help file to shed light on what to do. How do I make a DVD from a disk image ceated with iDVD?

I'm not sure how you are doing it but it should be done as follows. open Disk Utility and drag the disk image to the left pane in DU just below the volume list. then select the disk image in DU and press the "burn" button in disk utility toolbar.

  • Disk Utility is ruining my DVD+R DL Disks

I am trying to burn my backup image of Retail OS X Leopard 10.5.6 onto a DVD+R DL so that I can re-format my macbook because I have been experiencing some issues lately. The image is verified but about half way through the disk writing process, it says that it is finishing the burn, closing the disk, and than I get an error.
I have tried to burn the image on 2 different brands of disks wondering if that may be the issue (Verbatim and Memorex), but I am still having problems. My macbook is about a year old so I'm hoping that its not a hardware issue because the drive works for everything else.
I'm hoping that someone can help me figure out how to get the leopard image on a dvd since disk utility is not working properly. I also have an external usb hard drive, but I'm not sure if I can use that to boot my macbook with??

  • Disk Utility Burning CDs and DVDs Windows Compatibility

I don't burn many CDs or DVDs. However, a friend of mine recently switched to Apple, and he burns quite a few movies and CDs. He asked me how to copy DVDs, burn Audio CDs, and save files to CDs and DVDs. The only thing I knew how to do was to burn files to CDs. I know that CDs that are burned in the Finder will work on Mac OS and Windows. My question is about Disk Utility. I've read that Disk Utility does not create Windows compatible disks, however Apple's instructions for making a copy of a movie DVD are to use Disk Utility and create a CD/DVD master image to burn to a DVD. Disk Utility uses the .cdr format, which supposedly does not work with Windows. So, if I wanted to copy a Windows application CD, could disk utility make an exact copy of it or not? It seems to me that it should since I am making an exact copy using CD/DVD master, but will it do it or not? Also, if I made a copy of a Movie DVD using CD/DVD master (.cdr) will it only play on Macs or will it play on Windows also? When it comes to Audio CDs, I realize one must use iTunes to make Audio CDs. I have searched all over the internet for answers to these questions and most people say use Roxio Toast or they just don't answer these questions very clearly.

If you have two optical drives connected to your computer, you can just clone the disc. However, I'd recommend Roxio Toast, as others have, because it'll handle all the compatibility issues for you. Dealing with Finder and Disk Utility guarantees compatibility with macs, but not necessarily Windows, or even standard DVD/CD players depending on how you burn it.
If you have audio files, use iTunes to burn an audio CD. If you have movie files, use iDVD or Toast to burn a standard DVD (not a data disc).

  • Disk Utility - create ISO Data DVD image for burning?

Which are the exact options in Disk Utility that I need to select, in order to create an ISO DVD Data image that will be readable by PCs and Macs alike?
I have looked on the web and in the help but am none the wiser due to lack of an explanation of the options
Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled),...,MS-DOS (FAT)
Partitions:Single partition - Apple Partition Map,...,Single Partition CD/DVD with ISO data
If you cannot point me in the direction of some decent documentation, please just tell me which options I need to select to create an ISO Data DVD
    Thanks

    Try this link.
Basically, you can drag a folder into the list on the left. Then, with the folder selected, click New Disk Image from the toolbar at the top (not sure of the exact wording, but it's something along those lines). Make sure to select ISO from the pop-up menu.
Also try this article to convert a DMG to ISO.

  • Disk Utility not copying all files when making disk image

My OS is 10.6.5 and everything is up to date.
I have a dvd that was burned for me of a play my child was in. It was probably burned on a PC using out of date software for all I know. But it plays in a DVD player and also in DVD player on my Macbook.
I want to be able to share clips of it online with friends, and that has all been just fine importing from the disk image I created of the DVD using Disk Utility, using IMovie 09 to edit it.
HOWEVER when I got to the end of act one, chapter 7 in the DVD is only about 3 minutes in length. The disk image I created using Disk Utility does NOT include any chapter 7 (which happens to be the ending of Act 1) and so I cannot import it into I Movie in order to add it to my mp4.
When I explore the DVD itself with my macbook, it only lists twelve files (various BUP's and IFO's and VOB's etc) -- here they are sorted by file name
    VTS022.VOB
    VTS021.VOB
    VTS020.IFO
    VTS020.BUP
    VTS013.VOB
    VTS012.VOB
    VTS011.VOB
    VTS010.IFO
    VTS010.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
Now, when my husband took the disc and created a .dvdmedia file in it and I explore that, there are 14 files. All of the same 12 files plus two more. (The DVD itself has 13 chapters but the main menu doesn't allow you to select them.)
the other two files in the .dvdmedia package are
    VTS020.VOB
    VTS010.VOB
But I can't do anything with that .dvdmedia file except watch it.
So I'm trying to figure out how to at least grab even just that last 3 minutes from Act 1 either from the original disc or from the dvdmedia file, using Imovie. So far having no luck. Disk Utility leaves it out and it's my only bridge from a burned DVD to Imovie. I've tried creating a DVD master and also an ISO using DVDRipper and that does the same thing. Also if I open the original burned DVD with Finder it only shows me the 12 files not the 14 that show up when using DVD Ripper to create a dvdmedia file.

About 3 years old...pretty dated now I guess.  Am thinking I may just need to have it upgraded by a Mac tech.
For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

  • Disk Utility wont copy TimeMachine to new Drive using Restore

I'm trying to transfer my TimeMachine backups to a new firewire 800 drive from an old USB2 one. Having read the advice on here, I've tried to copy across the drive using restore. Disk Utility thought about it for 4 hours or so and then gave me the finger. So what do I do please?

What TO do.  Not what do.

  • Will Restore in Leopard Disk Utility reliably copy a drive with bootcamp?

I have a drive partitioned part OS X and part Bootcamp (with Windows XP installed). If I use Apple's Disk Utility to 'Restore' the drive (to copy the drive to a larger drive) will this work reliably for bootcamp as well as the OS X content? Presumably this just clones the drive?

Once you install MacFUSE you can not use the Startup Disk Utility anymore to boot into Windows, you need to hold the option key every time.
As you stated, NTFS is owned by Microsoft, its their proprietary format and has many different versions of it. I don't think any company has the full right to format NTFS which basically comes down that you can not complain to any of the companies or MS about data loss.
My idea with an image is that I can always read it, so in case the WinClone format or write fails I still have all my files (and not just parts of it). Since I am booted the most amount of time on Mac OS X anyway I don't care that a script creates an entire mirror image of my current Windows drive overnight.
I actually have several basic images that I can always restore in case I want to clean up my drive.

  • Disk Utility will not burn DVDs

Disk Utility will no longer burn DVDs. I have tried both Memorex and Verbatim DVD+R DL -- Disk Utility tells me the disks are locked, not writable, capacity 0. These are fresh DVDs right off the spindle. I am, however able to write to these same DVDs using Burn, so it's not a media problem. Tried deleting preferences for Disk Utility, tried using Drive Genius 2 to repair the HD, but it didn't show any problems. Any solution short of doing a clean install of the system?
