Getting DVDs to Play on a Computer

Yet another data point.
I brought in a Hollywood DVD and it played video but no sound...just like my DVDs at work.
Soooo, it is appearing more like the problem is on the player side, not the authoring side. However, that does not eliminate the problem. We believe that these DVDs will most likely be played on a prospective client's computer. It appears likely from my experience here that there are a lot of DVD players out there that have the drivers installed but not the DVD codecs/decoding software. I would have thought that Encore would have installed a proper DVD codec but that evidently is not the case.
All of these DVDs seem to play ok on a DVD/TV setup...what can I do other than writing a note on the disc suggesting that it be played on a DVD/TV if it does not play on a computer.
Will Bill Hunt's suggestion which he graciously offered about separating video and sound increase the likelihood that a DVD will play on a computer?

I was presuming Windows Media Player would play a DVD-Video. This is not that unusual...I even had a media house representative insist that WMP should play a DVD "out of the box." This is clearly not the case.
From Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0072.mspx
How do I play DVDs in Windows Media Player?
To play DVDs  using the Player, you must have a DVD-ROM drive, a computer running the  Microsoft Windows XP operating system, and either a software or hardware  DVD decoder installed on your computer. (By default, Windows does not  include a DVD decoder.) For more information about DVD decoders, see the  DVD Support in  Windows XP Web page.
If these conditions are met, you can play  DVDs by using Windows Media Player for Windows XP or later. For more  information, see the Play CDs and DVDs  Web page.
I had LG/Cyber link on my machine...it would not play sound...the free Cyber Link won't play Dolby sound. You have to buy the "premium" version for $15. For whatever reason, the freeware VLC and the Media Player Classic WILL play Dolby sound.
By the way My CS3 Encore appears to be limited to five Dolby encoding sessions; after that you have to buy the encoder for $295.
So, the lesson is:
Even if a DVD player is installed on a computer, don't expect it to play a DVD. The player has to have the proper drivers, codecs and decoding software. It appears that a lot of corporate workstations are not set up to play DVD-Video.
For someone involved in supporting the marketing team...this is a huge eye opener. I was expecting the marketing video to play on the prospective client's machine. Wrong! You have no control over how the prospective client's machine is configured. If the DVD is played and it doesn't work...it will simply be tossed to the trash...furthermore the likelihood is that you will never know.
In the short run, I am printing on the label that the DVD is best played on a DVD player/TV.
I did not hear from the media house on the results of the testing. Will check with them next week.
Thanks to all participants in the discussion. I hope someone else learned something as well.

  • How do I use airplay to stream a DVD movie playing in my computer to display on my TV?

How do I use airplay to stream a DVD movie playing in my computer to display on my TV?
I have a 2nd generation Apple TV and computer is a 2011 Macbook Pro. Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core i7. Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB. Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). Storage: about 500GB free out of 750GB.
I have a DVD player within my computer. Trying to play a movie from my computer to display onto my TV using my Apple TV airplay. But the airplay icon is not showing or giving the option to play a movie onto my TV.
I've installed all software updates and still I'm not able to have this functionality.
I assume this functionality exists where I can play a DVD on my computer, but watch it on my TV using my Apple TV, correct?
Thanks for your help solving this puzzle.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.
AirPlay Mirroring from a Mac also requires a fairly robust network.
You may find a third party product that you can use instead of AirPlay.

  • I can't get dvds to play "There was an initialization error. A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]  Anybody know how to resolve this?

I can't get dvds to play and, instead, get "There was an initialization error.  A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"  I went in for a Genius appt Friday and it played for the tech...but now I'm back home (one and a half hours from the store) and I'm getting the error message again when I try to load a dvd.  Any recommendations?

    Hello, try this...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
    Reboot... any change?

  • After I download a 256 kbps song using ITunes Match, how do I get it to play on my computer at the higher bit rate once I turn ITunes Match off again?

After I download a 256 kbps song from the cloud using ITunes Match, how do I get it to play on my computer once I turn ITunes Match off again? I have been using ITunes Match for awhile now to increase the bit rate on songs to 256 kbps.  Once I download the songs at the new bit rate, I turn off Match because I want to eliminate duplicates. Usually there is no problem. This time, however, 278 of my songs lost their file association and were unplayable unless I locate the song files within my computer.  These are songs purchased from Amazon.  In order to play them again in ITunes (Match is now off), I must locate each song file individually (I've tried to do it in bulk but have not succeeded) but now the bit rate has returned to the lower number BEFORE I matched the song.  I should have never used Match in the first place. Any ideas, anyone?

I discovered that the NEW 256 bit file does reside on my computer, in the ITunes files (My Music/ITunes/ITunes Media/Music.  So I can bring the songs back as 256 kbps, and I have been successful now at locating more than one file at a time, by clicking on the "find other missing files" tab in the popup window.  Previously, I'd been going back to my Amazon files, and not only was I unable to bring back a 256 version, but the popup window would not locate similar files.  So while I wish ITunes Match would automatically associate the ITunes Match file, at least I can retrive the file association without hours and hours of work.

  • Is there a way to optimized a DVD for playing on a computer, not on a TV?

I've got a project that I cut in FCP 5, looks fine on a TV, but my client wants it on DVD for sales force to use. Wants them to use laptops with DVD players. Problem is that the graphic portion of the program looks lousy when encoded in MP2. In fact, their logo, which again looks fine on TV monitor, looks looks awful on a DVD.
Unfortunately the sales force doesn't have Quicktime installed on their computers. Thinking of making a .wmv or mpg-1 movie and putting it inside a Director project on a CD.
Or is there a way to optimze the graphics for computer playback?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

You may be better off using Flash/Director for ROM playback...
If you can encode the graphics/title sequences from animation (codec) and not ever making them NTSC/PAL DV then try that...
Does it look bad on DVD all the time? So it looks poor on TV when playing off of the DVD? When you are watching the DVD on a computer are you watching it at Normal Size? Full Screen? if FS then how do they look when they are not stretched so much.... what res is the screen?

  • My DVD will play on my computer but not my DVD player

I created my first DVD using encore, and it seemed to work great. It would open and do what it was supposed to do on any computer. However, when I stick it into my DVD player for my tv, it Starts the loading process and the two blue horizontal line scroll down the tv screen and then locks my DVD player. I have to unplug my DVD player and then plug it back up and quickly hit the eject button to get the DVD out.

Something to try (if you are Windows)
Create a DVD output ISO file and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write the ISO to DVD (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)
Read http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1322583 for notes on installing Imgburn WITHOUT any toolbar add-ons
Imgburn will read the ACTUAL disc brand from the disc, which is not always the same as the box label (Memorex is notorious for buying "anything" and putting it inside a Memorex box)
When you write to disc with Imgburn, use the SLOWEST possible speed setting, so your burner has the best chance to create "good, well formed" laser burn holes... since no DVD player is required to read a burned disc, having a "good" one from a high quality blank will help

  • I downloaded the new U2 album, how do I get it to play on my computer?

I tried using the mini-player and the one in the upper left hand corner to play the songs in the U2 album in my "recently added" playlist, but nothing happens. I had an earlier version of iTunes and it would play automatically or after I clicked on the "play" arrow icon. So what gives???

Thanks! That did it. I tried that earlier, but for some reason it didn't work. Now it does. Just my computer letting me know who's boss!

  • Can't Get Songs To Play On New Computer w/ Windows 7

I bought a new computer Friday that has Windows 7. I downloaded iTunes...but I cannot play the song previews or purchased songs. It shows the song loads, but it never progresses...stays at 00:00. I can play video previews, but no music.
Is ity an iTunes thing? QuickTime thing? Windows 7 thing?
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I had the same problem after I installed Windows 7. My iTunes worked OK except when trying to play a track from my playlist or my Audio CD. Like you my slidebar never moved from 0.00 and I got no sound. The solution was to buy a more up to date sound card, one that is compatible with Windows 7 and Windows Media Centre as well as iTunes. I changed from a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 to a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Extreme Audio and now I can play and hear tracks using iTunes. As your laptop is new I would assume that it has a Windows 7 compatible sound card but you never know it may not.
Hope it works out well for you,
    Steve

  • Can't get itunes to play on my computer

I have Window 8.1 and just did an update in itunes but when I went to play my songs they won't play.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Playing dvds created in IDVD on computer vs TV

When I create a project in Photo to Movie, export it, burn it in IDVD— it looks fine on TV, but the quality is very low when the DVD is played on my computer.
How can I get my DVD movie to look decent on my computer as well as the TV?
    Thanks in advance for help.
    Lynn

The reason for this has to do with the quality of standard definition TV vs. your high resolution computer screen. SDTV is 640 x 480 which will look ok on a high resolution monitor if you make the window small enough. However, if you try to watch 640 x 480 recordings in full screen mode on your computer it's gonna look pretty bad depending on how good your computer screen is. The nicer your computer screen, the worse it will probably look. The only way to fix this is to record in a higher resolution format like HDTV which will take more time and space and you might not even be able to take advantage of that on a standard definition TV.

  • Rented a movie and can't get it to play on Apple TV only on computer?

How can I PLAY a movie I rented for Apple TV?  I can only get it to play on my computer.

According to Matt Clifton here in these Forums:
"MPEG-4 video files should be natively supported by Quicktime Player. If Quicktime gives you a codec error, you can try installing Perian (which adds more codecs to Quicktime) orVLC (a standalone video player)."
    Hope this Helps

  • How do you get dvds to work on regular dvd players?  It works on PC dvd player just fine.

I created a movie via Elements 13 (Using Windows 7) using video from my camcorder.  I added menus and such and then burned it to a DVD -R using Elements 13.  The dvd will play on a computer via the dvd player but it won't play
on a regular dvd player that is hooked to my TV.  What am I missing?

    gibbyutah
What did you create in Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 7 (assumed 64 bit) - DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc or AVCHD format on DVD disc.
Although you can use a regular DVD burner to create the AVCHD format on DVD disc, it will not play back on a regular DVD player. You need
a Blu-ray player or one of those multi media players whose specifications include support for AVCHD format on DVD disc.
So, first order of things is for you to confirm which type of product you produced using Premiere Elements 13.
Also, be aware that stop markers in Premiere Elements (any version) burn to AVCHD on DVD or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc do not
function at playback. Those stop markers work only for DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc.
Please let us know if any of the above targeted your issue. If not, more details please, and we will think about this some more.
Also, please review the specification of your TV's DVD player to verify its specifications as to type of disc supported as well as the format on
    that particular disc.
    Thank you.
