Getting emacs in solaris

our college bought a new solaris based server with thinclients.
we are better accustommed with emacs for programming which is not there.
as login is through telnet , only command prompt is there.
pls give me locations for downloading emacs also how to install it

As far as I understand from configuration you've outlined, you need emacs installed on server. Emacs can be downloaded from http://sunfreeware.com/ (sorry, can't give direct link since I don't know your exact configuration). I was able to compile it from sources, but there's also an option to download pre-compiled archive.

  • Using emacs on solaris 10

    Hi,
Does anybody know how can i use emacs on solaris 10
    i tried to type
    emacs
from a shell, but it responds me with
    emacs: command not found
when i install solaris 10, is emacs installed by default or i have to
    install it by myself?
I am very new to solaris, can anybody help me?
    thank you in advance.

Emacs 21.3 is part of the Solaris10 Companion CD.
The CD image is available for download on the Solaris10 download site.
Various versions of Emacs are also available as individual downloads ( pkg-add ) from the Sun Freeware site, as well as, a number of other sites that support the Sun OSes. ................John.

  • [Solved] Where do I get Emacs 24 for Archlinux?

    hi list,
I could not find anything about emacs 24 in the repos, only a bazar version in AUR. Is that supposed to be the developer-version of emacs 24?
If not - where and how do I get emacs 24 for 64bit archlinux?
    cheers
    Last edited by 4on6 (2011-11-18 12:07:19)

Thats what I thought, and the bazar version could well be from the 23 series too. I send a personnal email.
BTW, found this working description how to install emacs 24 from source on Ubuntu:
    http://alexhenning.github.com/blog/2010 … on-ubuntu/
Would that be a valid recipe for archlinux too, if it turns out there is no package?
    cheers

  • Solaris Management Console not getting started in Solaris 10

    Hi folks,
I am new to Solaris and installed Solaris 10 on IBM ThinkCenter successfully. But after booting in text mode, I typed smc and it gives error related to DISPLAY.
Then I tried with the command kdmconfig and I could choose Xsun. In the Video device list, it was showing XF86-VESA Intel Corp. Unknown board.I saved the settings and pressed F2 for testing. I could see the display; but unable to get in to GUI mode.
    Can you help me please?

Try search the WEB for your display adapter drivers. However, most of new especially intergated graphics are still not supported.
You may try to get it working with xsun, run kdmconfig and specify as display adapter VGA or Super VGA. I know that in some cases it helps.
As well do the same with Xorg and run /usr/X11/bin/xorgcfg, try to find somekind of generic VGA in drivers that are listed there.
As I know, smc runs only in graphical mode.
I saved the settings and pressed F2 for testing. I could see the displayDid you see buttons on that display (something like "yes", "no")?
xsun is very hard to set with most of display adapters and monitors, sometimes it shows only part of the screen, so you might not to see these buttons. However if you see them, press "yes" (or something like that, I dont exactly remember). Then reboot and your computer should start the GUI.

  • How to get link_status in solaris 10?

ndd -get $interface link_status used to show link status of an interface. but it is no longer available in solaris 10. anyone know the alternative?

'ndd' is very interface dependent. Some interfaces support it (sometimes in different ways), and some don't at all (and this has nothing to do with Solaris 10).
So, what interface are you referring to?
Also, you may simply be able to use 'kstat' instead.
kstat -n '<interface>' will give stats in most cases, including link status.

  • Internet sharing to get eMac online wirelessly and cheaply

Going to buy an iMac, which I will connect to the internet via ethernet. Would like to put my eMac across the room, but would like it to also be connected. Thing is, it's got no wireless capabilities (no bluetooth or airport card). Can't I get SOMEthing in the thing, then set up internet sharing between the two computers to get the eMac online? Is there a cheap option for me? Thanks in advance.

Do you have an internal wireless network now? Is the Internet access through DSL or cable? Is it necessary to connect the eMac wirelessly? The distance appears to be short. Many wireless routers have a built-in switch with a number of RJ-45 outlets, allowing the Internet to be shared via Ethernet cables (in addition to via the wireless network).
Otherwise, you would have to add an appropriate AirPort card internally, or use a wireless Ethernet bridge connected to the Ethernet port. A wireless Ethernet bridge (there are units from, for example, Belkin , D-Link and Linksys) will work with almost any Ethernet device under almost any operating system (normally, no special driver software is required).
Some people have reported successful use of wireless USB adapters, but there are also many reports about difficulties. If you want to try this, make absolutely sure that there are Mac drivers (suitable for your operating system) for the USB adapter in question.

  • Trying to get eMac restarted

Long story short, my eMac sits on the gray screen with the apple when I try to start it. I tried a PRAM reset and a disk repair, no luck. According to the support website the next options are to perform an archive and install, then an erase and install if the archive doesn't work. If I do the archive and intall will I lose everything on my hard drive? Should I take it somewhere and try to get the files, itunes, etc. off it before I do these steps?

Do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
You won't lose any apps, files or passwords, etc. Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install. Erase will lose everything.
Try this before A&I. Will it boot in Safe Mode? See
What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? (Mac OS X)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
    Look at this link.
*Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
You should consider getting an external Firewire connected hard drive & use it for frequent backups. If your hard drive fails, you'll lose everything.

  • Can't get eMac onto existing network

    Hi,
I have an iMac G5 running Tiger 10.4.9 in my home office connected to a BT Homehub broadband modem / router via an ethernet cable.
My wife uses an eMac 1GHz G4 running Panther 10.3.9 in a nearby bedroom that connects to the internet via Airport Express through the BT modem.
I recently bought a MacBook Core2Duo running 10.4.9 and connect to the internet via Airport & the BT modem.
I have successfully created a network between the iMac and the MacBook wirelessly but cannot connect to the eMac with either.
The Mac's are all named differently but we have the same admin password for all three Macs. The eMac 'sees' the other two Macs but when I click on connect for either under Finder - network when asked for a password on the eMac the password is incorrect so cannot connect.
I have no idea what this other password could be, when or how I set it. The eMac works flawlessly otherwise and connects to the internet no problem.
Any advice would be most welcome. Many thanks for reading this.
    iMac G5 20" 2.0GHz 1Gb RAM black MacBook Core2Duo 2GHz 1Gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   eMac 1GHz 512Mb RAM 10.3.9 black 30Gb iPod Video 5G

In paragraph 4, you say that you cannot connect to the eMac when initiating a connection from either the iMac or the MacBook. Then in paragraph 5, you say the eMac sees the iMac and the MacBook but it cannot connect to either one.
So, just to make sure I understand, you cannot connect to anything from the eMac nor can you connect to the eMac from anything, i.e., both directions to/from the eMac are dead?
In either case, following on with Robbie's post, you are specifying either the short username or the long user name of the user account that you want to access on the destination machine when attempting to login?

  • Enterprise 3.5.1 hangs after BusyThreads gets to 100 (Solaris 2.6)

Monitoring with perfdump I notice that Busy threads are normally small (2-3), but periodically they start to increase rapidly. The server becomes very slow (actually seems to hang) and I need to restart. I have tried various configurations in magnus.conf and with ndd, no luck. Any ideas on how I can isolate the problem? This is a production server that gets about 500,000 hits a day. It is now hanging 4 or 5 times a day. Thanks.

    Hi,
This is very common problem in a production environment
where U can't reduce the queue size since it's an production environment. The best solution would be increasing the the cache size proportionate to Ur RAM size.B'coz when U set an lower throtle value the performance would be get but large no of users would not be able to connect if U increase the value to accomdate more connection Ur performance would be affected.

  • Solaris-express-10/03 emacs core dump

I've just installed emacs on Solaris express 10/03 in Sun-Blade-100 box and having problem in gui mode. Emacs only runs with -nw in text mode but not in gui mode. Starting with no options, it has segmentation fault with coredump. Although it is not running on this machine, I can still have sshed emacs running in gui mode from other computers on that machine. By examining the core file with gdb, it is highly likely that realfree () from /lib/libc.so.1 from emacs causing the problem. It there any way to fix this problem? -Thanks
P/S emacs coredump and corresponding assembler code.

The usenet thread starting with this article...

recommends to work around this problem by running emacs with 'setenv LD_NODIRECT 1'.

  • Solaris 10 Dev. Edition - Network config issue (NIC,DHCP,Can't ping router)

I am a developer getting started with Solaris 10 configuration. I recently installed Solaris 10 and have run into an issue with network connectivity.
I have done much research on this and I was able to get communiction to the internet established once, but the settings were lost on reboot.
Overview - The Solaris box is connected to a router which is acting as a DHCP server.
    AMD 64 dual 2.6
    nForce4+ integrated NIC
    1) I am not able to obtain an address from the router. Nor do I get a respons back when I ping it. I get an IP etc if I boot into Windows so phyicial connectivity is fine.
    2) Upon reboot the device nfo0 as shown using ifconfig -a has an IP of 0.0.0.0.
    3) If I run ifconfig [hostname] my machine gets the ip from the hosts file, but I would like to obtain this from the router.
    4) NOTE - the machine shows as active on my router, but the Solaris box cannot be reached from other computers on the networ, nor do I get a reply back when pinging the router from the Solaris box.
GOAL - reach and obtain a DHCP from the router and have the changes stick upon reboot.
    /etc/hosts contents
    127.0.0.1 localhost loghost
192.168.1.55 solarisX /*<-- this is what I get when I do ifconfig nfo0 solarisX */
    /etc/hosname.nfo0
    netmask + 255.255.255.0
    solarisX
    /etc/defaultrouter
    192.168.1.254
    /et c/netmasks
    192.168.0.0 255.255.2550
    Specific Steps taken:
Using the driver nfo-2.4.5 locate at http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/ I did the following.
    % cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    % rm obj Makefile
    % ln -s Makefile.${KARCH}_${COMPILER} Makefile
    % ln -s ${KARCH} obj
where ${KARCH} is the result of `isainfo -n`, and ${COMPILER} is
"gcc" or "suncc" which you want to use to make the driver.
    4. Testing
Testing before installation is strongly recommended.
    # cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make install
    # ./adddrv.sh
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make uninstall (for solaris7, don't remove the file )
    # modload obj/nfo
    # devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r )
    # ifconfig nfoN plumb ( where N is an instance number, typcally 0 for first card)
    # ifconfig -a ( you will see an entry for nfoN)
    # ifconfig nfoN YOUR-HOST-NAME
    # ifconfig nfoN ( ensure IP address is correct)
    # ifconfig nfoN up ( and then you can test with ping, telnet, ftp ...)
    5. Installation
After you ensure that the nfo driver is fully functional, install it.
    (1) copy the nfo driver into the kernel directory
    # cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make install
If you do not test the nfo driver yet, execute the following commands:
    # ./adddrv.sh
    # devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r)
    (2) Configure the network interface. Create and/or modify the following file:
    /etc/hostname.nfoN
    (3) Reboot the system.
    # init 6

Thanks Alan. I worked on trying to get the NIC working again last night. I had it working once, although the settings did not perist. I can still get the device to load, but I can't communciate with the router (it's not physical because another OS can reach it.
I took your advice and tried the sys-unconfig. But I did not have much success.
I am wondering if plopping in a new PCI NIC would be the most efficient route to get the server up.
What kind of NIC do you utilize and have had success with?
I am looking at possibly a DLINK DFE-530 or NetGear FA-311. I don't need wireless at this point just a rock solid DEV box.
Thanks again for the previous info.
