Just in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.)

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time? -

Okay ... try downloading and saving a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe to your PC from the Apple website:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now download a trial version of WinRAR:
http://www.rarlab.com/download.php
Open the iTunesSetup.exe with WinRAR, and try to run the standalone install of Apple Application Support from the AppleApplicationSupport.msi you find in there.
It works now BUT there are still problems. It is not allowing or recognizing my Cd/DVD player and i CANT burn. Looking still for this fix. -
for any more information, i am in South Korea right now, and i've tried both english and korean version to install on my computer.
it's a laptop from Asus, N61J. i'm using windows 7 and can't update the itunes- apparently need to download a new version, idk why they couldn't just let me update it through itunes. and so itunes have error as following picture. please help. i got a new iphone today and because of this stupid itunes i can't sync my iphone.. -_-found a solution in a different discussion.. thank god.

I had itunes set up and working since i have had my iPhone and iPad. One day it asked to be updated, so i did. After it updated it stopped working because whenever i tried to open it it would say "this shortcut has either been deleted or moved would you like to delete this shortcut". This kept on happening so I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it, but then comes my second problem. While itunes is downloading an error pops up saying "There is a problem with this windows installer package A program required for this install to complete could not be run contact your personnel or package vendor". This is my main problem and i don't know how to stop it i have tried a disc clean up, De frag and trying to completely take everything to do with itunes off my computer, but it still doesn’t work. Apparently it's an itunes issue. I just tried to update and got the same issue. Called att to activate my iphone 4s and they say they can do the swap but apple is telling them itunes is down atm. So will have to wait

I went to upgrade itunes and when it finally downloaded, i got the following message: There is a problem with this windows installer. A program required for this install to complete could not be run.
I was advised to unistall the old itune, which i did and then loaded the latest itune 10.5 i think. It dowloaded fine to a point and before finishing, it came up with the same message.
