Getting files off an old computer.

I have a Performa 6116CD and want to transfer some files to my MacBook. How would I go about doing this?
The Performa doesn't have any USB ports, nor firewire. It only has an SCSI port and two 8 pin mini-din ports. Also the floppy drive is broken (and some of the files I want to move are bigger than 1.44Mb).
Any suggestions?

If there are not too many files & the Performa can access the internet, you could email them to yourself, & download to the MacBook.
 Cheers, Tom

  • Getting files off my old macbook onto this one?

my first macbook (which i was stupid enough to not get applecare with) randomly stopped turning on.... so i got a new one.  (this one)  there's baby pictures of my son on the first one.... anyone have any suggestions as to how to pull them off??  i'm not sure what the OS is on the original one, can't turn it on to find out!  i got it in summer of 2006...

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very reason.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
Certainly you did not fail to backup such important pictures.

  • How can I get files off of a MacBook Pro stuck in sleep mode?

A bit of a backstory: Recently my mid-2008 MacBook Pro stopped working. When I try to boot it up, the screen just stays black and the idle light flashes perpetually. I've reset the NVRAM and SMC, even attached it to an external monitor, but nothing works. After a lot of research, I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the hall effect switch.
But I digress; I don't actually need this computer repaired, as I have a second (newer) MacBook Pro I can use. However, there are some files on the old one that I'd like to retrieve. And yes, I've tried booting into target disk mode, which unfortunately doesn't work for reasons listed above.
Essentially what I'm asking is, is there a way I could transfer the files off the old computer to the new one? I know, I should take it to the Apple store, but that's not really an option right now due to personal reasons. I'd just like to know if anyone could suggest another way.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Remove the drive and connect it to your other Mac with a SATA to USB adapter. Copy whatever files you want off the drive.

  • How do I get my files and photos off my old computer

I have an old Mac G4 and just got a new iMac. I have them both hooked up to my Bell Turbo Hub But they do not see each other so that I can transfer files and photos off the old computer. Help

If you have a Thunderbolt to Firewire cable you vpcan start the G4 in target disk mode and connect it directly to your new iMac. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
Or you can connect them via either firewire/thunderbolt or ethernet and use Migration Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4889

  • Can I get files off of my old hard drive?

So, I've been going through a whole lot of trouble lately with my late 2011 Macbook Pro. A little over a week ago it wouldn't start up, and after attempting the recovery process I learned that I had a corrupted hard drive. The problem was I had a partially written 50000 word novel on there which I hadn't backed up. I'm aware that that was incredibly stupid of me, and I usually always back my work up, but I guess because I'd just purchased this macbook in July I didn't expect to have a problem so soon. Anyway, I took it to the apple store and by hooking it up to genius bar OS instead of my own they were able to get into my hard drive and they let me extract the files I needed, and then proceeded to replace my hard drive which took about four days. I just went back to look at the novel after getting the computer back today, and I realized it somehow only got half of it; maybe it was in two documents or something that I missed, I'm not sure what happened, but it's missing a hundred pages.
So, long story short, I need to get back on my hard drive again. They gave the old one to me, but the last thing I want to do is go through the whole entire process of switching drives again, because I need this computer to work on and it would undoubtedly take forever to do. What I'm asking is, does anyone know if there's another way to retrieve these files? Would the apple store be willing to let me load it onto a different computer so I can still keep my own to work on? I know it's probably a long shot, but I'm about ready to give up and this is my only hope.
I'll be returning there tomorrow afternoon, because apparently on top of all of this they did something to my battery while replacing the hard drive, and now it's coming up as not available and it relies entirely on the power adapter to function. So they've got to fix that too. Just my luck, isn't it?
    Thanks.

There are several ways to get data off an old drive, some of which have already been mentioned:
USB drive adapter cable (best choice if you only need to do this rarely, too fragile for frequent use)
External enclosure (choose the 0GB empty case)
Drive dock (I keep one of these around to read old drives that are in the closet, so I no longer need the other accessories. Super handy accessory, much more reliable than the USB adapter cable.)
There are also write-protected forensic drive docks intended to examine and rescue data from drives without altering the contents, but that's probably more than what you need. They're mostly for data recovery shops.

how do you get your library off your old computer if it will not turn on?

You can extract the drive; put it into an external enclosure to mount it to another computer by USB or FireWire (if available) to acess the files. Copy and paste (Windows-style) or drag and drop (Mac-style) to another destination-- another external HDD or another computer.

From the names I'd guess they are temporary files. If excel is running, quit and try again. If they still won't move or delete reboot. If they still won't move or delete...kill a chicken at midnight under an oak tree?

Sorry am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to all this. I just need to have them stored someplace and accessible to play when I need to. Thanks for your help.

I transferred my library to a new laptop and everything appeared on the screen. I turned off the old computer and the library disappeared. How can I make it a permanent transfer as my old computer is being scrapped. Thanks

    Hello Terryfrank,
Congratulations on your new laptop!  Also, thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with transferring your iTunes Library to your new computer.
I notice that you are coming from the article “iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer,” and it sounds like you might have used the Home Sharing method outlined in that article.
With Home Sharing, you can stream content from another computer, and it sounds like that is how you have it currently set up.  The last step is to import the content to your new computer.  Use these steps on the new computer (while the old computer is on) to import the music to your new computer’s hard drive:
Once your new computer sees the Home Share from your old computer, click that Home Share on the left side of iTunes on your new computer.
Select the content in the Home Share that you want to transfer to your iTunes library on your new computer, or choose Edit > Select All to choose all of it. Then, click the Import button in the bottom-right corner of iTunes.
Wait for the content to finish transferring.
Additionally, if you want to transfer your playlists, you can export them from the old computer to the new computer:
    Transferring playlists
If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.

  • Getting Files off of ATV

    Hi All,
Is there a way to get files off of ATV that have been synced from iPhoto? Here's my problem. I have a LaCie drive that I use to save all of my media files on and that drive syncs my photo's to my ATV. I can no longer mount my LaCie drive; which is another issue, but I want to be able to take my photos from my ATV and back them up on another drive so I don't loss them if my LaCie drive is fried. I can view the photos on my ATV, so the files themselves are there, but I can't figure out how to access the ATV as a volume drive and copy the files somewhere else.
    Can someone help me out?
    Thanks in advance.
    John

    You can't officially do it.
AppleTV is not additional storage or a backup solution.
    It only holds non-retrievable copies.
Your only solutions are to hack/mod AppleTV to open up some functionality - which is beyond most user, or to dismatle and remove the internal drive and then use an adpter to connect it to your computer and manually hunt for the files.
You can certainly get at the files if you're prepared to take AppleTV apart.

  • How do i get music off an old ipod

How do i get music off an old ipod classic into my windows 8 system when it doesn't find the ipod when i plug it into the usb?

    Hi aekdbaker ,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have music on your iPod that you would like to transfer into your iTunes library on your Mac.
If those songs you wish to transfer were purchased, there are two different ways you can accomplish this. The first way, which does not even require you connecting your iPod to the computer, would be to re-download them from iTunes in the Cloud directly to your iTunes library. Directly connecting your iPod to your Mac to transfer purchases is an option as well. Instructions for both methods of gathering your past purchases in your iTunes library on your Mac are available in the attached article.

To troubleshoot your iPod not being seen in iTunes, please use the troubleshooting steps outlined in the next attached article.
