Getting .flv video to play on server

I'm helping my customer setup a Captivate 2 training module
on her company's server. She has the training program up and
running on her laptop computer with slides, recorded voice for
audio, and one video file with audio in .flv form. She is able to
run the program flawlessly from the C drive on her laptop. Her
server does not allow her to publish the program directly to the
server. She publishes the program to a directory on her C drive and
then copies the directory with all files to the server. She starts
the progrom on the server using a HTML link and the only thing that
does not play is the .flv file. The slides advance, the voice-over
audio is there. When she gets to the slide where the video is
sopposed to run there is only the slide background - no video. Any
ideas of what to check or what we are overlooking?
Thanks,
Dan L

Also, Windows servers tend to require the MIME Types for
various files
before it'll deliver them to the client:

  • Ugh, why can't i just get a video to play?

At this point I feel like I have tried everything, and I cannot get a video to play from my courses.
I posted before asking about vimeo but since that doesnt seem to work, I will ask a broader quesiton.
How can I get a video to work? It really seems like it shoudl be able to do this.
    - I have elearning courses, inside i want to embed a video
-i then upload my courses to a site called bloomfire, basically a content management system for customers to login to
-i cannot upload a folder of files, so i upload the flash file , then the video file and my link to the file is cited in the captivate file..it will not work. I even have the 'behind the scenes' link which is one an amazon s3 server...still does not work.
-it also wont work if i host the video on vimeo
I have spent so much time on this I just need a video to play somehow...any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thank-you,

    Hi,
    Thank-you for your response.
Can you tell me what you mean by the .js and .css files? what about them specifically?
I am able to apparently link to a video I put on my own website that is just http. Should I be able to link to videos on vimeo normally? Or youtube?
    Thank-you,

  • How can you get 2 videos to play simutenously together?

How can you get 2 videos to play simutenously together so both are playing side by side on screen at the same time?

    Welcome to the forum.
As Steve observes, what you are talking about is called "PiP," or Picture in Picture.
He has given you the basics of creating a "split-screen" PiP, and that should be exactly what you wish to do.
For more detail, plus more ways to do PiP, I strongly recommend his book, Cool Tricks & Hot Tips for Adobe Premiere Elements 11, from Muvipix. He has an entire chapter (Chapter 10) on PiP, and many of its uses, with detailed instructions on the settings to accomplish it. Just that one chapter is worth the price of the book.
    Good luck, and happy editing,

  • Cannot get SWF with imported video to play on server

I have had this issue for quite some time, but I never got around to looking into it until now.
I am having an issue trying to get an SWF that features an imported video to play on our web server from its URL. About six months ago, I didn't have this issue. The only thing that has changed since then is that I have gone from Mac (Snow Leopard) to PC (Windows 7). I am using CS 5. I've attempted to perform that same action on the Mac in CS 4 without success.
I do as I usually do: import the video (in this case an MP4 or F4V) into a Flash file and add a skin using Flash's "Import Video" function. I publish the file as an SWF and can get it to play on my hard drive. Once I place it on the web server, I can get the file to play by browsing to the server's contents in Windows Explorer and clicking on the SWF file. However, when I attempt to access the movie via its URL, the file will not play. The skin I chose shows up, but the status bar in between the "play" and "stop" buttons just looks like it's loading continuously.
I've tried importing the video in several different formats, always with the same result. At first, I thought it was the MP4 file, but then I used Adobe Media Encoder to encode it into an F4V file with the same results. Everything plays fine locally (even from the web server). But when I attempt to access the video by its URL, it simply won't play.
Any suggestions for what might be going on?

Glad you got it working. Good Job!!
Just to clarify a couple things for future reference.
The reason the mp4 didn’t play was because it was an mp4, not an flv. Attempting to play the video in a .swf does not “convert” it into a .swf, it’s still a mp4 (or .flv)  Both are external files that stay external, they are just loaded into the .swf video player in order to display the video.
In this case as well as the other example link you posted, the .swf is just the player, it is NOT the video. Neither the other flvs or the mp4 have been “converted” to .swf, they are still the same, flv or mp4.
In the case of the older videos, you chose a format that worked with your .swf video player, the .flv format. In the case of the mp4, it doesn’t work with your .swf video player.
To verify for yourself that the .flv is separate and has not been converted to a .swf, go to your server and rename this file “FK_DHI240.flv” to “FK_DHI240B.flv” and then test the link you posted, it will not play the video, even though no changes were made to the .swf.
Any flv can be played from the hard drive just as easily as from a server, given a .swf video player that is correctly pathed to find the .flv video file.
As for “streaming” the flv from a Web server, technically that means that you are using a Flash Media Server to do true streaming, which is most likely not the case.
A better choice would be to choose “progressive download” when you are importing the video into Flash.
But glad it’s all working. Hopefully next time will go smoother.
    Best wishes,

  • Cannot get 92MB flash video to play on server

I've done this numerous times locally, but this is the first
time I've done such a large video for play on a web server.
    I have a 92MB FLV (640x480 700k.) Using Flash 9.0 I created
an AS3 FLA and imported the FLV. I gave it one of the stock
players, positioned it in the scene (it's the only thing in the
scene) and changed autoplay to false. Then I published it and the
HTML. Viewing the HTML locally, it plays fine. Once on the web
server, I can view the browser activity and it loads the 92MB FLV
but the progress indicator displays perpetual loading stripes.
I have the SWF set to reference the FLV in the same
directory. Meaning, the source is simply the name of the FLV.
Here's where it gets really odd. I did the same thing with a
48MB FLV and it works fine. Both are encoded the same other than
the 48MB FLV is 400x300 @ 350k. I uploaded it (with the player swf,
and AC file of course) to the web server and it plays perfectly. It
    downloads as it plays.
So I took that FLA, saved as, changed the source of the FLV
to the 700k file, resized the scene, positioned the FLV and hit
publish. I made no other changes from the 350k file. I uploaded the
swf and HTML and it still wont play. I've tried three browsers on
two different machines... same issue on all.
Any ideas why it wont play? It plays locally and when linked
    to a smaller file.
    Thanks

Did you embed the FLV or do you reference to the files? What
is the filename (any non-ASCII characters, starting with
    digit)?

  • FLV videos not playing correctly in Captivate 6

I am running into an issue where my FLV video is not playing correctly when my Captivate project is exported out and saved to the web. The FLV video is about 20 mins long (~100 MB) and it is being streamed from Kaltura. The FLV video is inputted into the Captivate project as a multi-slide synchronized video across 27 slides. The slides themselves are imported from Powerpoint. The problem that we are running into is that the Captivate project and the FLV video play correctly when viewed with decent bandwidth, but they do not appear to play correctly for users with slower bandwidth. However, if a user views the videos independently of Captivate, they can view the videos correctly, even at slower bandwidth. I have tried hosting the Captivate files on several different webservers, including an LMS. But the issue continues and I'm searching for any type of answers that might help.
Thanks for reading and any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Nathan

    Nathan,
Your welcome, if that is the case, then can you try and insert the MultiSlide Video, you can insert the streaming video URL.
You can add the server to you computer as network Drive and then browser to that location, once you do that, the options to add the Video as Streaming can be chose and your Vidoe would remain insync with main playbar, users can play and pause content that way.
See if this can be implemented at your end.
    Thanks,

  • Flv videos not playing on html files - UNC/Mapped Drives

    Hi,
We've discovered an issue with Dreamweaver CS3 recently (running on Windows 7 Pro, 32bit) in our school, where embedded flv video files wont run when the file's UNC path appears in the address bar, but will if this is changed to the local drive letter, in our case N. This obviously makes it a little difficult for teachers to mark students' work.
I found a similar issue in another thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/688483
which had not been answered. Are there any known solutions for this please? I have spent a while browsing, but have so far not come back with much. I've tried enabling and disabling 'Remove run from start menu' which was suggested, but this didn't make any difference.
    Thank you
    Regards

  • .flv VIDEOS not playing smoothly

A heavy video-generated Captivate project has been created in Cap 4:
    * 18 slides all up, with the total size of .flv videos coming to 90.7MB
    * Using Captivate, as looking for interactivity -- there is also a menu, so users can jump to whichever section they'd like to watch/use
When accessing the completed project online:
    1) The loader quickly goes up to 100%
    2) Shows the preloader image I have inserted
    3) User clicks play, and the first slide with video plays...
The first video either freezes / move quickly along the timeline. You are also unable to jump to other sections shown in the menu. While I am not too worried about this, my priority is for comfortable viewing for the first video. I am assuming that the first video freezes, etc because the whole project has yet to load completely. How can one work towards this solution? I have tested the loading time, changing it from 10%, 20%, towards 100% but the video is still freezing at times / moving quickly along the timeline.

Thanks for your PM - I just checked your project and it runs 100% fine and smooth for me.
I checked it on two different PC's
    1. Vista 64-bit, IE 7.0, Flash player 10, 10mbit/10mbit internet connection.
    2. Win XP Pro, IE 7.0, Flash player 10, corporate LAN
This leads me to the conclusion that the issue is the speed of your internet connection. The first video is around 80 seconds and is 13.5 Mb. That is very big when you consider the length and especially the dimension of the video you are using.
If you dont already have FP10 then try and upgrade to see if that helps. It's much better at handling videos etc. than the older versions of Flash players.
Secondly you need to recode your videos. You will be able to get the first video down from 13.5 to perhaps 4-6 mb, with a noticable quality loss. If you have Flash you can use the Adobe Media Encoder to do the recoding.

  • Flv video not playing in AIR application

    Hi everybody,
i'm building a tutorial with flash catalyst and since the 20 states limit i've split it up in different swf files that I import and show in different states.
One of these swf (which i built with Catalyst as well) is supposed to play a flv video, and it actually plays it if i run it alone.
The problem comes when i build the overall tutorial: it works perfectly with the "run project" command in Catalyst and with the run-local version but the video won't play if i try the AIR application.
    Does anyone have any suggestion?
NB: the "asset" directory created with the AIR application installer does contain the flv file (i didn't have to put it there manually)
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Giuseppe

    Hi Giuseppe,
    what I do is:
    1. create a file using Captivate
    2. i place a .flv video in this file
    3. save the file as .swf
    4. then i go to dreamweaver and put the swf on a html page.
    Now:
when viewed in a browser, everything runs fine.
when i pack this page into an air application (in dreamweaver) the video does not appear,
instead I get this "Connection Error"
I do not know a console or log file.
However, I learned that there is a .xml file located in the same AIR folder that you publish in.
In this .xml file there is a setting :transparency. in order to playt a .flv file this must not be be "transparent"!
(i read this somewhere in the net)
    hope that helps
I will talk to a professional programmer, if I have any news, i will let you know

  • Getting .flv files to play in browsers

I have a website I just put up which is designed to show videos that I've produced.  I want the videos to play in a new window in the local browser (using Target=_blank in HTML), and I thought the Flash plugin would recognize the files and play them.  The files have all been converted into .flv, and the thumbnails each link to a video file, but the browsers won't play them.  How do I get this to work?
    The site is at:  evanpetty.com.

Video is a weak spot for me, so I have to be careful about not leading you astray.  You should be able to set up controls somehow for a player, but I don't know what that would consist of.  Chances are you could use Google to find a tutorial... search terms that might yield good results would be "Flash FLVPlayback tutorial".
I know it is possible to build a player that has selections of different videos to play, and I made an AS2-based one without making use of the FLVPLayback component, but I could only have done it thru the help of a tutorial.  Instead of choosing the component, in that version I end up going to the little list icon that's in the top right of the library and choosing New Video... that adds some kind of Video device to the library that I can place on stage and size.  The rest of the dealings with it involve code.  For that one, maybe you could find something using ""Flash New Video tutorial"

  • Can't get Quicktime videos to play once uploaded - using iWeb 08

Please help. I just updated my work website and uploaded a few quicktime videos of my TV spots. These same spots were uploaded and played fine on my last website update last year. But this time around, they're not working so well. Once uploaded, if you click on the controls under the screen, they don't respond. If you double-click the actual screen, the video starts and stops playing.
How can I get my quicktime videos to play like they're supposed to on my site? I'm using iWeb 08 and my version of Safari is 5.0.2.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked. However, it's three different videos on three different pages, and each video is pretty much the only thing on each page.
That would be great if you would take the time to access my site and see if you can find what the problem is. My URL is www.haleyturner.com. Click on the first square, the second square, and the last square to access the quicktime video pages.
