Getting footage off a dvd into fcp

Hey guys,
Heres a question.
I went skydiving. I had someone tape me doing it, and the guys made a DVD for me to take home.
Well I want to do my own magic on it but Im having a hard time.
the dvd plays fine in the dvd player, but thats it. when i open it up it consists of 9 files. 3 files are .vob. now these work in fcp but 1 is just the menu picture, 1 is the first 10 seconds of the video and thats it and the third is just a picture that was used in the menu.
the other 6 firles are . bup .ifo.
now i can see the .vob files in my fcp but the other 2 give me errors. Fcp doesnt recognize it. I downloaded streamclip but even that doesnt read the other 6 files.
is the rest of my video on the ifo or bup files?
I tried everything else including all the applications but am getting no luck
and questions would be much appreicated

Try a program called "Hawkeye" http://nitosoft.com/en.html
It will convert DVD video to several different file formats for future editing. I've used it to get to footage off a wedding I produced to send a clip over the web to the client recently since I had finished the project and removed renders and original DV footage off the hard drive.
It will convert to several formats, iPod, FCP, AVI, DV25, DV50, PAL, NTSC, even MPEG 2. It will even take footage from multiple discs and burn a new DVD with an iTunes-like playlist.

  • How to bring footage from my DVD into FCP

    Hi,
I REALLY need some help! I edited my film in FCP and burned in DVDSP, the same goes for the raw footage. They are both now on a DVD. My problem is that I let my friend borrow the raw footage tapes (bad mistake I know!) and now he cannot find the tapes. So I want to know if it is possible to take the raw footage back off the DVD without loosing any quality, and to bring it back into FCP? Thanks SO much for the help!

Without losing ANY quality? Sorry, quality was lost when you encoded for DVD. More quality will be lost when you rip the footage off the DVD, and more lost again when you encode again for DVD.
Sorry bud. Gotta press your friend more.

    Crazy

download the free MPEG Streamclip application
use it to open and transcode the video to a QT compatible codec for editing, (such as DV)
    work your magic

  • Problem importing footage from Canon XF305 into fcp

I have footage from a card having recorded on a Canon XF305. I literally dragged and dropped card onto my desktop making sure not to change any file names. I am now trying to import this footage from my desktop into fcp. I have downloaded the canon fcp plugin but everytime I try to import the footage using the canon plugin preferences I get an error message which reads... "AA0229" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media. Can anyone help me??

    Hi there,
I've had no joy with this. Have tried everything. Just can't get footage into fcp any way I try. I have downloaded the plugin but I still get the same error message. "AA0229" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
My work flow is as follows.
Open final cut pro. Go to log and transfer. Go to preferences within the log and transfer window and click on Canon XF plugin. Then go to import. Click on file on my desktop which is labeled as CLIPS001. Then error message comes up.
Memory card was dropped directly onto my laptop and onto a back up drive without changing any file names. Was thinking this would be straight forward.
Any help will be hugely appreciated. Am I missing something simple?

  • Import Clips From DVD into FCP

I am working on a 50th anniversary project for a client. They want to include several "home movie" clips in the project. They provided the home video footage to me on DVD. I am looking for the best way to import the material on the DVD into FCP.
I have used Handbrake to capture the video from the DVD and the file is saved in an MP4 format. But when I try to import that file into my FCP bin, FCP tells me that it does not recognize the file format.
I think that I can connect a DVD player to my system by running the signal from the DVD player into my DV cam, and then into my MAC, so that is a possibility.
I am just wondering if I am overlooking something that is quicker or easier.
Again my goal is to import material from a DVD into FCP so I can use clips on my timelines.
    Any hint, tips, advice?
    Thanks in advance!

  • I have an old ipod and want to know how to get everything off it and into my iTunes library.  My old computer died and the original library was lost, so don't have any of the content saved anywhere else.

I have an old ipod (it's the very thin oblong one in purple, the one before the one that does video) and want to know how to get everything off it and into my iTunes library.  My old computer died and the original library was lost, so don't have any of the content saved anywhere else.  I now have an iPhone 5S and listen to music on that, so want to be able to listen to things from the old ipod too.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks very much

Apple normally does not get involved in handling lost objects like this.  Since a real name is not installed it will be much more difficult.
You can try contacting Apple support at the US number, assume you are US going to BWI from the listing: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 and explain the situation and see if they offer any suggestions.

  • Getting footage off of a commercial DVD

I had wanted to get some footage off of a commercial DVD, specifically it was that count down stuff that is at the beginning of a reel and some real dust and scratches that I could use to composit an old film look.  When I tried to get the DVD footage into Premiere it wasn't reading it.  The DVD files are in .VOB ------I was thinking that changing the extension may do the trick, or am I out of luck.  I use CS4 on a Mac  OX 10.5.7
    Thank you

If there is no DRM on that DVD, then PrPro CS4, as of about CS4.3 (cannot remember when full VOB support was added, but it was about the third update for CS4), the program should be able to Import the VOB.
I do like the idea of using stock footage, as you will have paid for the rights of usage, and then there will be no worries about DRM. That will be easier and legal (important to me).
    Good luck,

  • Ripping off a DVD into iMovie

My boss gave me a DVD of some older footage he wants me to put into some advertisement trailers for him.  I am using iMovie to do all the organizing and editing and want to know how I can get the video into iMovie.  I assume I have to rip it off the DVD, but don't know how to do it or what programs to use.  Thanks for any and all help,
    Eric

This tip will show you how to import your home movie on DVD into iMovie 11 for editing. It will not work on commercial, copy-protected DVDs. (Ripping commercial DVDs is against the Terms of Use of the Apple Discussions).
DVDs are encoded by iDVD into MPEG2, which iMovie cannot edit. So you need to convert the DVD into a codec that iMovie can edit. For highest quality, I recommend that you convert the DVD to Apple Intermediate Codec. There is a free tool called MPEG Streamclip that will do this. You will also need to install the Apple QuickTIme MPEG2 Playback Component.
    Here are the details.
    1) Download and install the Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component ($20) - available online from Apple.
    2) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Insert your DVD into your Mac. If DVD Player or Front Row starts automatically, quit those.
    5) Open a Finder window. Navigate to the DVD.
    6) Drag the Video_TS folder from your DVD and drop it into MPEG Streamclip.
    7) If MPEG Streamclip offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes.
    8) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
    9) Optional steps.
9a) Optional: You can deinterlace your footage in this step, if you like. If you don't know which is best, try a short clip both ways. I usually do not deinterlace.
9b) Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
9c) Optional: If you don't want to make one huge clip out of your DVD, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 8 through 10 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    10) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    11) Open iMovie.
    12) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the file you saved in steps 8, 9, 10.
    13) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.

  • Capturing from a dvd into FCP

I have a bunch of QuickTime files on a DVD that I need to capture. I have already imported them into FCP and it works fine but when I want to capture, FCP does not recognize the DVD deck (which is built in my Mac) and says "No Communication".
    what should I do?

because when I log a clip it shows "Media offline" message, so don't I have to capture the footage to my hard drive in order to use it in my project? How do I avoid the "media offline"? I also have some still pics that I have imported from another DVD, but once I take out the DVD from the deck it shows the Media offline message again...

  • Import video and audio from a dvd into FCP

Is there an easier way to import video and audio into Final Cut Pro - I am playing it on a DVD player and making a digital tape of it. Then logging and capturing it into FCP.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Yes, there are a few ways that are faster. Have a look at this thread http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3465691
You could use software, such as "streamclip", or import by plugging your camera into your capture device and hooking your capture device into your computer and capturing by non-controllable device settings.
    Good Luck

  • How to import audio/video from DVD into FCP

Hi, I need to import/capture into FCP from a dvd. When dvd files are open on my Mac it show VOB fotmat for video. I imported those files but they don't have audio, also the total time is 20 minutes but when imported into FCP it shows only bout 25 seconds. can someone help on this matter?
    Thanks in advance

Cinematize works great. You can select portions or the entire DVD. It will not read encrypted DVD's so assuming you are using media that you have rights to it will do fine.
You can import in several compressions. If you like you can import only the audio, only the video, etc. It will give you a QT file at the end.

  • Importing DVD into FCP

video comes in fine but audio does not playback files are coming in as QT's Can anyone help?

Copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your computer.
Open MPEG Streamclip. Go to File > Open Files. Choose VOB 1.1 - you dont need VOB.1 usually.
You will be asked if you want the other VOB files -you do ( depending how long your DVD is)
You might be asked if timecode breaks should be fixed - say yes.
Go to File > Export as QuickTime. Right at the top , you will see Apple Motion JPEG A.
Click on it and choose DV NTSC or PAL as appropriate. Set Quality to 100%.
Click Make Movie at bottom right. Wait.
Bring it into FCP with your Easy Seup on DV NTSC (or PAL) with Sequence Settings to match.
Edit to your hearts content. It really is that easy

  • How do I import Canon HD footage shot @ 30 fps into FCP?

Greetings all -- have Canon HD footage shot at 30 fps, not realizing Sony equipment can't "read" it and when I tried hooking the camera directly up to the computer to import the footage into FCP, FCP does not recognize the camera (No Communication). Anyone who can help with what settings I should use, etc.? I would be most grateful! Thank you....

Use HDV FireWire Basic as a device control setting in FCP.. might also help to read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302407

  • I'm in trouble, please help!!  (Getting footage off of computer)

About a year ago I made a wedding video for a woman. A year later she's blasting me because it skips and freezes up at points. Part of me wants to say, "no lifetime garauntee lady, lose my number." The good guy in me wants to find a fix.
So I have her DVD and it DOES freeze up and stuff. I was able to use 'handbrake' and get the first 22 out of 50 minutes off. I can't figure out how to rip the rest. I'm basically trying to get the footage back onto imovie.
I also tried running through my dvd player into imovie, but it skipped for me as well. I need to somehow export from the computer or have the computer turn it into a quicktime. I also tried 'disc utililty' which failed.
Any tips???? Need to get this woman off my back.

Well, if there is a read problem with the disc (and that is what it sound like) I am not sure how you would get the material off the disc. I mean why doesn't Handbrake rip the whole thing? Of course ripping the material off the disc will eventually degrade the quality which may not solve your back problem. Did you make a back up tape? Or even a back up DVD? The back up tape is the first and best source to turn to, capture that and redo the DVD. A back up DVD may at least give you a readable DVD to rip from from. If all that fails, it is back to the original tapes and try to do a re-edit. Was only this one disc made, does somebody else in the family have a disc? How long has the client had the disc? If there is scratching on the disc you may want to try a cleaner: http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-DVD-Disc-Cleaner-Repair/dp/B0002T54KU. If there isn't scratching on the disc, that opens a whole new can of worms, not the least of which is that DVD from iMovie/iDVD won't play on her player. Most likely reason is that iDVD uses uncompressed audio.
If you don't have back ups or the original tapes and can't get a readable copy of the disc, it may be time to bite the bullet and offer a refund, assuming you charged for this. I would certainly expect a disc to last more than a year, provided it was properly cared for, wouldn't you? Experience is expensive. Back up often.

  • How do i import a dvd into fcp

is this even possible??? i need to know ASAP.
i am making a pretty sweet movie, and i want to use some clips from star wars in my project.
also, i downloaded a kick *** track by nickleback and want to put that over the scene where the ewoks dance. but for some reason it won't let me import the song i got off itunes into final cut. how do i get around that.
    hurry.

Yes, it surely is possible to import DVD-content in FCP, albeit not directly. This question has been asked more than once over the last few days here. I'd suggest you dig a bit further instead of writing 'hurry' - unless that's your name.
