Getting iBook and PC both connected to internet

I am new to owning a Mac and have another computer which is a PC. I would like to have it so that both the PC and Mac can be connected to the the same internet connection at the same time without having to set up another DSL line. I don't know if this is possible. I presently have the Mac hooked up to the wireless airporter but have not been able to get the PC to be connected at the same time. I was hoping I might be able to just plug in the PC to the airporter and get a connection but I am not having any luck. Would I have to get a wireless card for the PC or is it not compatible with the Mac airporter at all? Any insight on this would be so helpful! Thanks

Hello Jupjohn,
I'm not really clear on your set-up, however it all sounds possible without getting any other equipment (ie wireless card for the PC).
The following Apple PDF (Designing AirPort Network) explains how to set up (p27):
The web --> DSL modem --> AirPort Extreme Base Station --> ethernet connected computer (PC) + wireless connected iBook
http://images.apple.com/airport/pdf/DesigningAirPortNets-022-1036.pdf
Post back with any other details - i.e.
- if the above looks like your set up
- "wireless airporter" == AirPort Extreme Base
- etc
and some one will be able to give you more specific details.
cheers Brent

my wifi bar isnt showing up at the top and i cant connect to internet but its not my router? HELP HOW DO i get wifi back

I recommend that you start with taking a look at the Apple Support article to help you troubleshoot what the issue may be.
If that still doesn't resolve the issue, we will need to get the AirPort icon back on the OS X menu bar to continue. Please try the following:
System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Show Wi-Fi status in menu bar (checked)

  • New ipad and Macair not connecting to internet

i just got an ipad and macair. when setting up the wi-fi, it looks as if its connected with all the bars showing. but when i click safari, it says not connected to the internet. i have done everything on the wi-fi help page. and reset the network about 50 times. but always the same result. i really havent tried the macair yet. any suggestions to get it to connect to the internet?

WPA2/personal - I do have the greed LED light and I can acess the internet on my iMac via the LAN port. I powered off the comcast modem and the Extreme and the iphone and the iPad and then started up the Extreme and then the modem and then the others.  No joy.  on both iPhone and iPad I get 'this webpage is not available' when I try to connect via the wireless network.
I keep thinking this is something simple I'm overlooking as I had no problem until I replaced the Extreme.  I did not set up a new wireless network.  Could that somehow be a cause..?

  • Macbook Pro retina have a network problem that I need to restart my computer before getting it's able to connect to internet

Macbook Pro Retina 15" 2012, Mountain Lion OS pre-installed.
    Case 1:
It connects to WiFi home network and internet fine.
    Put the machine to sleep.
Upon waking up, it can scan for my home network that it used to connect to, but either not able to connect, or even after it connects, it just can't let me access internet.
Restarting the machine can revive by getting it connects properly to internet.
Toggling the Bluetooth won't help here.
    Case 2:
It connects to network using USB ethernet adapter.
Same case, everything works fine before sleep. After sleeping for some time, it's not able to connect to the internet any more unless I do a restart.
It's able to access local area network though, as I'm able to see some local network machines in my Finder window. Yes, I clicked on them and able to connect to their share folders. But just can't get through internet.
OS Problem? I'm not able to roll back to other OS, I swear I don't want to go through that painful process.
Hardware problem : WiFi card? Don't think so, because I can't get to internet even I immediately switch to USB ethernet adapter.
Hardware problem : USB ethernet? It works fine in other non-Mac machines.
There got to be something wrong in somewhere that it doesn't re-establish the connection to the internet, no matter what I do.
None of the functions in the network utility tool can help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Just got new ipad2 and can't connect to internet...recognizes wifi network but won't connect

just got a new ipad2...recognizes wifi network at home, but can't connect to internet...help???

I just had a similar problem.  Both the ipad 1 and ipad 2 in my household quit connecting to the network even though it seemed to recognize it.  if you think it is recognizing your network, just not connecting, check to see if bluetooth is turned on.  i had to turn bluetooth off and then manually enter the DNS number.
My solution also came after I re-started my network and reset all the settings on the ipad2.  The DNS number then showed along with IP submet Mask and router.  I used that dns number to enter into ipad1 after turning bluetooth off on it.
Totally unscientific fix that may have been more coincidental than correct but you might try it.  BTW--no idea how bluetooth even got turned on to begin with.

  • AE ppoe mode in AE only allows macbook pro and iMac to connect to internet but not ipad

I just upgraded to  20MB DSL line and got a new Qwest Q1000 modem connected to an A Extreme.
Since Qwest now has PPPoE, I set the Q1000 modem to bridge mode and turned off Wifi.
Then I Set the AEx router to ppoe mode, entered my username and password from Qwest and all is well with all lights green.
But... only my imac and macbook pro connect to the internet.  My ipad, my wife's macbook and an ipod touch cannot connect.
According the Airport Utility, all these devices are detected by the wifi network and they have their own  unique IPs provided by the AEx router (in pppoe mode)   10.0.1.7,   10.0.1.9 and so forth, no ip conflicts detected, all the lights green with full access to the internet. Again, only  my iMac and my macbook pro actually connect to the internet at full speed.
Does any one know why some devices connect to the internet while others are not able to...
Again, no errors detected anywhere, all modem and router lights green.
    Any help is welcomed.

Thanks for the reply.  Your suggestion did not work.  Apparently there is an issue with DNS addresses.
The Airport Extreme in pppoe mode  sets the router and DNS addresses to be the same 10.0.1.1.  Some devices (like my macbook pro and iMac) ignore this DNS value or use a different  (unknown) and then they connect to the internet perfectly.  But the devices (ipads and ipods) aquire and set both values (Router and DNS) to be the same, (10.0.1.1 and 10,0.1.1) wont connect to the internet until I manually  changed the DNS address in the DNS field.
Question: are these two values supposed to be the same/different/ in both fields in the AExt in pppoe mode?
    Thanks

  • Can I get iBooks without wi-fi connection

Can I get iBooks for my ipod without wi-fi?
    Can I download them online

You can only use the iBookstore from an iOS device, and thus only via wifi (or 3G).  If you want to get ebooks on your computer via  a wired connection, and then transfer them to your iPod, I think you would need to use another store, like Kindle, Nook, or Googlebooks.

  • Installing Elements - Download worked, serial number received, when running the actual program install download I now get an error message "cannot connect to internet." Internet connection works just fine. What next?

I have tried rebooting, disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet, and am still getting this bogus "can't connect to the internet" message.

Can you check your connection settings. Sometimes they flip to a proxy server. On Windows go to the Windows Control Panel and choose Internet Options. In the properties dialog click on the connections tab, then click the button marked LAN settings. Try putting a check-mark in the box Automatically detect settings and click OK. Then close the control panel and try launching Elements again.

  • New house, new ISP and mac not connecting to Internet

    Ok i give up!
Just moved to a new apartment, and have cable internet access instead of DSL for the first time.
So i have a wirless router from Cablecom, with 4 ethernet ports, but the wireless signal is a bit low so have also connected my Netgear wndr4500 to one of the ports and My PC, ipad and iphone all connect to the Netgear wifi and out to the internet no problems.
The imac running 10.8 connects internally but not to the internet.
I can connect to cablecom router from the mac and access the settings so i know the wireless network is ok on the mac but that seems to be as far as it gets.
I have tried connecting direct via cablecom router wifi, and via ethernet cable to the router and same symptoms.
Have deleted the network and remade it from scratch.
Still same, when i go to google.com ( for example ) it simple says not connected to the internet.
However if i use network utilities on the mac, and ping 173.194.33.50 it returns with all 10 and no packet loss
I put that address in a browser and i get google.com, but can't get past it
    So now i'm stumped!
    Any suggestions????.
    Thanks
    David

    Launch the Network Utility application.
    Step 1
Select the Lookup tab and enter
    google.com
in the address field. Press return. Post the output – the text, please, not a screenshot.
    Step 2
Select the Ping tab and do the same.
