Getting iMac to recognize mini dv camcorder

Ok. I have searched and search but have not found a solution to this problem. Like some others I have a lot of footage on mini dv tapes. The camera I have is the Canon zr45mc and recently got it fixed so naturally I want to get the footage onto the computer. i have two of these cameras and have tried both but they are both not being recognized.
I went out and got a firewire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable since my iMac doesn't use the old firewire. I cannot get the mac to recognize the camera. I have checked the system profiler and it says,  "Warning:    Unable to list FireWire devices Maximum Speed:    Up to 800 Mb/sec"
I've tried my MBP as well and get the same results. Has anyone found a solution to this!!!!????
These are my specs
iMac
24-inch, Early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

I will try this. I should clarify this camcorder is tape-based that uses the old mini dv tapes. I checked that listing that rkaufmann87 suggested and it says most taped based cams are supported but when doing all of those selections i am uncertain of what to choose as the 'tape' being captured.

  • How can I get iMac to recognize Canon Pixma mp990 printer wirelessly?

Although my Canon Pixma MP990 printer/scanner shows I've properly set it up for wifi, and the blue wifi light illuminates on the printer, my iMac now refuses to recognize that my printer is connected. Imac now shows the printer as offline.  When the printer was set up for corded/wired connection, the Imac worked fine with it. How can I get iMac to recognize the wireless printer setup? Thanks!

    Hi ..
    Then click  Wireless Help
Make sure the printer is recognized in System Preferences > Print & Scan > Print
If not, download and install the drivers designated for the mp990 model.
In the System Preferences > Print & Scan > Print window, click + (plus) to add the printer.

  • IMac CD drive failed - now trying to get iMac to recognize external usb CD drive

Hello, as best as I can tell, I'm having the same trouble with both internal drive, and now external added drive, neither one working.  I posted onto what looked like older, similar posts last week, but got no reply.  Hoping a fresh posting might get some visibility.
iMac (12-18 months old, bought new)
    2.5 GHz Intel Core I5
    4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    OS X version 10.7.5 (11G63)
    Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 M
what models the DVD drives are
The internal "superdrive" is HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA32N, firmware KE06, ATAPI.
The external (I think) is HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT80N (it's a brand new Amazon Basics USB 2.0 External Slim DVD Writer).  I actually got two new ones (shipping error), but neither one works).
I don't use the drive very much at all, but it worked fine the last time I did.  The other day I tried inserting a new music CD and got nothing, repeatedly.  After reading around online, I got the Amazon external drive, but again nothing.  I tried the Amazon drive on a small HP notebook I have and it worked fine right away.  I don't know what else to do.
The SMC and PRAM reset mentioned in some other posts has not worked.  Nothing has so far, and no music CD or movie DVD work (both new, very clean).  The only way I am able to eject the disks (internal or external) is via Disk Utility.
I "think" the disks must be seen by the computer/drives somehow, because I'm ultimately able to eject them from Disk Utility??  Also, I inserted a purchased movie disk, and the name of the movie was actually shown in the Disk Utility screen.  But nothing played, and iTunes has never opened in any of my disk insertions (and I know it is set to open automatically when disks are inserted).
I don't know what else to offer, but if you have any questions I'll be happy to provide what I can.  I look forward to your assistance!!  Thank you,
    Jeff

Yes, I know that - but in either case (internal/external), nothing is seen, and itunes won't play, when a drive is inserted.

  • How do I get iMac to recognize my external HD containin my photos from PC?

Hi. I have a brand new iMac and want to move my archived photos which I have saved onto an external HD from my old PC. When I plug the USB cable into the iMac, the external HD is not recognized. What do I need to do to get my photos off the HD and into the iPhoto.
I cross-posted in iPhoto help, but was referred to this forum..thanks!

My understanding is that if your drive(s) was formatted with NTFS OS X will not recognise the drive.
Networking the PC and the MAC would be a go.
Failing that, I think that the best (if a bit painful) way would be to find a PC, dump all the pics onto the PC, reformat the discs in FAT32, put the pics back and then connect to your Mac.
You could also consider installing windows on your Mac.

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

  • Connecting a JVC GR-240 Mini DV camcorder to iMac

    Hello,
I am completely new Mac user, having used recently decided to ditch my home Dell Pc in favour of a Mac. I have tried to connect my JVC GR-D240 mini DV camcorder to the iMac via the firewire port. Neither iMovie HD (which I downloaded) or iMovie08 seem to recognise the camera – the only source they allow is the build in iSight camera. The camcorder is placed in play mode, but nothing happens.
I can connect the camera to my old Dell PC, record to avi and then copy this to the Mac, but this is not an ideal solution as I am getting rid of the PC soon.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
PS – I have one of the new silver iMacs.

    Hi Philip,
connect the cam, switch it on and start the System Profiler (About this Mac menu).
Look into Hardware/Firewire, there you will see the firewire bus and your cam should be shown.
If this is not the case, then there might be something wrong with your installation or your mac.
You could also download the Firewire SDK from http://developer.apple.com/sdk/
There you will find the AVCBrowser in the applications folder of the SDK. I don't know but it might be possible that you also have to install xcode, which you will find on your DVDs shipped with the mac. Connect the cam, start AVCBrowser and you cam should be shown. In the Browser you can check a lot of thinks on the cam.
I had only one problem with a Sony with dead fw-port, but as yours still works with the Dell it seems to be somethink on the mac side.
Try repair permissons and have a look into /var/log/system.log, if you find anything about firewire there post it.

  • Premiere CS5 (win7 x64) won't recognize my Mini-DV camcorder.

    I have Premiere Pro CS5 installed on a Windows 7  64-bit system.
When I try to Capture, I keep getting the error message:  "Can't Activate Recorder. Try Resetting Camera."
the whole set-up worked fine on my XP system with Premiere Pro 1.5.
    Extra info:
The Mini-DV camcorder is a Panasonic NV-DS33   (but personally I think it has nothing to do with my camera because I have seen so many threads online regarding this issue and no-one has any decent answer!)
the firewire cable is fine because it works on my old XP computer.
in premiere, if I change the camera to an HDV, then suddenly I can CONTROL the camera, but I can't capture)
Windows 7 (x64 bit) recognizes the Camcorder in the Device Manager (and says it is working properly).
I have tried several other DV capturing softwares (Stoik, Scenalyzer, WinDv). I have even tried my old Premiere Pro 1.5 on my 64-bit system.. and NONE OF IT WILL CAPTURE MY CAMCORDER!
This is very frustrating. I need my new win7 (x64) Premiere CS5 to capture successfully. I have spent a LOT of money on this new system. What on earth is the problem?
(i saw one thread on a similar issue regarding a 32-bit installation of Win 7, and it is marked as ANSWERED! but in my opinion, (from the amount of forums on many other sites) this issue is definitely not fixed.
is there any update to Premiere CS5? or a workaround? or anything else I should know?
PS: it is not an option for me to keep using my old computer to Capture video and then transfer it to my new system. i am passing my old system on to another person.
    many thanks
    Marc

I agree that the "Legacy" FW driver solution should be a stickie, or FAQ. Since Win7-64 was released, it has caused no end to the grief. Maybe Jeff, or Todd will have a better solution to getting the word out.
It was Harm Millaard, who brought that to MY attention, and he's posted it to many, many threads. In nearly every case, it's solved the issue.
Good luck, and thanks for reporting Colin's success,
    Hunt
PS - per your suggestion, I just published this "fix" in the Tips & Tricks sub-forum for PrElements.

  • How to get my imac to recognize my canon vixia hf40 in imovie?

    Hi Apple Support
i just bought a new iMac and a Canon Vixia HFM40 and can not get iMovies to recognize the HD video/camera ....using the USB connection from the camera to the iMac , the photo came in lighting quick,
the camcorder has an HDMI out on the camera . but my new iMac does not have an HDMI port. Do I need to get a cable that will allow me to have the HDMI output out of the camcorder and input to the iMac via firewire..... please reply ASAP, because if i can't use this Canon camcorder to put in HD video to my iMac than I want to return this product to a iMac compatible camcorder....
    thanks

So I understand correctly: you said you used the USB connection and it worked?
Here is some information on iMovie compatibility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/9.0/en/mov39f84bc2.html
And here is some info on the firewire > hdmi connection:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=641911
If the USB worked, why don't you use that? I also just looked at some of the specs and it appears you can use SDXC cards with it? I have a Canon that uses SDHC cards; my iMac does not like it either, but there is a simple workaround: I simply use a USB high speed card reader and plug it in - the SDHC card icon shows immediately and I can import the footage. So, you could easily try that - it would make things much easier.

  • How to connect my mini-dv camcorder to new imac with no firewire

I have a Sony Mini-DV camcorder (Handycam) and used to connect it via firewire to my last iMac.
My new iMac doesn't have firewire - just thunderbolt & usb.
Is there a way I can use this camcorder on my new iMac? Are there adaptors, etc.?
    Thanks.

As far as I know, all recent iMacs still have a firewire 800 port.
So you would need a firewire 400 to 800 adapter.

  • How can i get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder?

How can I get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder using a Sony CAMERA USB cord??

Gotta say thank you — again.  Sorry the posts were spread out over more than one location.    I'll check and see if Third Party Software is considered a "peripheral", maybe that would have been a better single thread choice?
Definitely news we can use and the reference link is appreciated.
OT ~ We keep becoming more and more aware of how easy it is to lose one's bearings when it comes to keeping up with info tech.  My husband and I are both official members of the geezer set and have been out of the work force for some years.  You really do pick up so much just by being in the environment where people are using things to get work done.  A couple of old MP3 players, PPC G5, and a vintage Inspiron 3800 that someone didn't want any more is about it.  No cell phone, no iPod, no iPad, no home wireless network, no streaming media.  Fixed income.  So we do with what we can as long as we can.  If we could get by without that Intel processor, we'd probably make do with what we've got.  On the other hand, we've really wanted a notebook for a very long time and have to admit that needing to upgrade to accomodate my husband's project is pretty much just the "reason" we need.  I really mean it when I say that we are beyond appreciative that users take the time to share info and patiently educate those of us who fall into the "slow tech" category.

  • I captured from mini-dv camcorder to FCP7 using control from my computer and firewire. I cannot find the file or clips I transferred anywhere except for in Finder. How do I get the clips from Finder to FCP7. Also I did not see audio on the computer meters

I captured from mini-dv camcorder to FCP7 using control from my computer. I only find the capture clip in Finder. How do I get the clip in Finder to FCP7.
Also my audio in the capture was not showing up on my audio meters on my computer-is this normal. Thanks

you will not see the audio meters from within fcp move while capturing.
If you only see the captured clip in the finder, not within fcp, there's something wrong.  You might try deleting your fcp preferences

  • How can I get my computer/Final Cut 7 to recognize my old camcorder?

The computer and Final Cut Pro 7 no longer recognize my old camcorder Sony TRV 460. It used to. I tried a new USB cable and it still doesn't work. I'm using Mac OS 10.6.8 which I've used in the past with the camera and have had no problem with it. Any ideas about how to get it to recognize the camcorder? It uses old 8mm tapes. iMovie no longer recognizes the camcorder either.

    a) this is the fcpX board ...
    b) you need to use a firewire cable, usb no use for miniDV on Macs ...
