Getting iMovie to empty 'phantom' trash

I am at the end of my tether with this at this stage! I've checked the forums everywhere and can't seem to get an answer. I have finished my iMovie project and during the course of it deleted loads of footage and emptied the trash accordingly. The problem is that the piece is only 2 minutes long and it's taking up 32 GB's - fair enough I keep being told this is got to do with the non destructive editing - but how can I tell the computer to bypass this so I can have my memory back? I can't seem to find any way of rendering it so the computer will finally dump all of the memory to the trash so I can delete it. There are some tiny clips - a couple of seconds that when you put them in the trash it reads as 16GB but when I empty it doesn't reappear on my hard drive. This seems like it should be so straightforward but I can't get an answer anywhere - Help!!

Grrrrrr!
I exported to quicktime at full quality - then reimported the (quicktime) footage to a totally different iMovie project so I could trash the original - same thing again - I'm told clips are in use etc and I cannot empty the trash. I don't understand why there isn't a simple function where you can tell the programme to bypass or 'forget' about keeping long deleted and unwanted footage for non-destructive editing purposes. It means in some cases a third of my hard drive space is gone for no useful purpose whatsoever.
Time to get Final Cut methinks.

    Hi i am alice
I have deleted imovie and emptyied my trash by accident and i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get it back
    thx

iMovie is part of the iLife suite of programs.
If you have 10.7 or 10.8 when the machine was purchased, just log into AppStore and accept the iLife for that machine and reinstall it all, it will replace iMove.
If you have 10.6 originally came on the machine, look on your second set of disks, there is a bundled installer that should put it back on, then Software Update fully to bring it current.
If you originally had 10.5 on the machine, stick the disk in and try to run the bundled installer, or use Pacifist from CharlesSoft to extract the program and then Software Update fully.

  • It seems that somehow I no longer have permission to empty the trash...

Recently, I have run into a problem in that I can't empty the trash because, according to the pop up,  I do not have permission to delete some items that are in the trash. ***?
The items I currently can't delte were put there from a jump (flash) drive. Is this the issue? I didn't have that probelm before upgrading to Lion. How can I get permission to empty the trash so that these things come off the flash drive and the trash get emptied?
    Thanks for any help....

    With that one, I get
    rm: illegal operation
    usage:rm [-f |-i] [-dPRrvw]file ...
             unlink file
    (My Name)-iMac:~(my name) (the password)
    -bash: (password): command not found
    (My Name)-iMac:~(my name)
In the case of the parenthisis, my name is showing as my actual name--although the last letter of name has an s added to it, whcih sometimes shows up as a dollar sign, and the password in parenthisis is the correct password.
Still nothing as far as getting the file out of the trash
Could the 'unlink file' string have something to do with OS X doesn't remove the file totally from the flash drive until it's been erased in the trash And if it isn't getting it erased in the trash, it won't be erased on the flash drive. It should be noted that within the flash drive is an unhighlighted file named .Trashes.
Really confused and frustrated at this point.

  • I imported an hour of video into iMovie HD and cut it down to a 33 sec clip, and emptied the trash.  When I save the project, the file size is 20Gb.  How can I save just the 33 sec clip?

Non-destructive editing is an important feature of iMovie HD 6.
iMovie preserves the entire copy of every clip you place into your movie in case you change your mind at a later stage.
So, if you have cut out one minute from a 45 minute clip, iMovie will have stored two complete copies of that clip. This is why is helps to set import as 3-5 minute clips rather than one huge chunk. As DV runs at 13GB per hour your project files can get very big.
One workaround is to complete the editing of a section of the movie, then export that to Quicktime: highlight the clip/s, choose Share-Quicktime, turn on Share selected clips only, and choose Full Quality from the pop-ip menu.
Once you have saved the stand-alone clip to your hard drive, you can re-import it into your project using the File/Import command, and delete the original long clip/s from the project.

  • I have a new mac and was in launch pad and deleted imovie by accident because it was showing two copies. I have not emptied my trash, but imovie is not in the trash nor is it anywhere when I search the computer for it. What happened? Where is it?

I just got a new macbook pro. I was in launchpad and there were two imovie icons so I clicked on one and deleted it.
It seems as though imovie is missing from my computer completely now. I have not emptied the trash, but it is not in there.
Where has my imovie gone and how do I get it back? I don't understand why it isn't in the trash or anywhere on my computer.
    Please help

    Hi wjosten,
Yes, I have checked the app folder and there is no imovie in there, there is also nothing in the trash.
I have also checked the HD for imovie and it seems as though it's just gone?
Thanks for your help, if you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate them.

  • I deleted an audiobook from Itunes on my computer and emptied my trash, plugged in Iphone 5s to sync Itunes. Audio book still appears on my Iphone. How do I get rid of audio book on Iphone?

I deleted an audiobook from Itunes on my computer, emptied my trash, they attached Iphone 5s to computer to sync computer to Iphone thinking that by deleting the audiobook from Itunes, the audiobook would then be deleted from my Iphone.  It's still on my Iphone.  How do I get rid of the audiobook on my phone?

You transfer the purchases to the computer you use to sync the iPhone.  You can use a thumb drive or an external HD, etc.  Read this: iTunes for Mac - How to copy purchases between computers:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1373

  • I have sent a file to the trash bin. When I come to empty the trash bin everything goes out except this one particular file and I get a note saying the file is 'in use' but it is not. How can I delete this file from trash?

I have a Macbook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.2. I have sent a work file to the trash bin along with many other files. When I empty the trash this one particular file remains and I get a message that this file is still in use. I have tried returning the file to my documents, opening it, closing it and then sending it to trash and again I try to empty trash but the same message comes up - Q - How can I trash this file permanently?

First just try logging out and back in.  Whatever is holding on to it may not be running after the logout thus freeing it so you can trash it after logging back in.
You might also try Trash It!

  • I get an error message when I try to empty the trash in order to clear up an external hard drive.  I had been using it for time machine, have shifted that to a larger external hard drive, and want to free up the space for photographs.  Any suggestions?

What should I do when I get an error message (error code - 8003) when I'm trying to empty the trash to clear up additional space on an external hard drive?

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • If you trashed all your music in your itunes and emptied the trash can you get them back?

I have trashed all the "orginial files" of my itunes songs and emptied the trash. I did not know I was deleting the files when I did it. I thought they would still play in my itunes but it just pops up and says the original file for this song cannot be found. Is there any way to get these files back?

I assume that you have no backup, all songs that you purchased may be downloaded again from the iTunes Store (Purchases section), any that you ripped maybe lost. Plugging your phone in now may well remove the music from the phone rather than adding it to iTunes.
    From now on, backup.

I had the same problem yesterday with an application file that was deleted after installation of an update. I used "Put Back" to move it back to its original location, then used "Show Package Contents" to delete/empty trash for small groups of files at a time. I suppose the application file itself may have been too large to empty at one time. I hope this helps.
