Getting iPhone 3G to work on an older Mac...

My mate called me yesterday having upgraded his phone to an iPhone on
impulse.
He called me as he couldn't get it to work on his old iMac 500Mhz. I
realised that his problem was two fold.
1) His OS was 10.3.9 and is too old (10.4.1 is required)
Mac Tracker says this iMac can take up to 10.4.1
2) His iMac only had USB 1 (USB 2 is required)
He is probably going to get a new MacBook as he desperately needs to
upgrade but it got me wondering if it would be possible to get the
iPhone working on such an old Mac.
1) His iMac doesn't have a DVD drive so is there another way to
upgrade to OS 10.4?
2) Can you get a Firewire to USB converter and would that work?
This last point also effects my girlfriend as she has my old PowerBook
G4 867Mhz which only has USB 1.
Cheers
Alice

Actually, 10.4.10 is required, but after installing 10.4.x, software update will handle the rest getting whichever 10.4.x version to 10.4.10.
Did his iMac ship with 10.3? If not, how did he install 10.3 on this iMac?
You can't convert USB 1.1 ports to 2.0.
It will be much less trouble overall for him to go ahead and purchase a MacBook, especially if this is what he was probably going to do anyway.
It is possible to sync with USB 1.1, but doing so is not supported by Apple and is much slower. USB 2.0 is too slow IMO, but I was spoiled by syncing older iPods via firewire which is faster than USB.

Hi I have a Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W printer. This works with my Windows-based Toshiba laptop but not with my i-Mac. I have the latest (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) OS-X software.
I have installed the printer using 'System Preferences' on my i-Mac and it appears on the list of available printers but documents that I create just don't print.
Can someone please advise me how I get the Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W printer to work with my i-Mac?
    Thanks, John Lee

Looking at the Konica web site for the PagePro 1300W, I saw the following note.
Please note: This printer is designed to be used in computer operating systems running MS Windows only. Operating systems such as UNIX, Macintosh, or Linux are not supported nor do we have workaround drivers available. Older MS Windows versions, such as Windows 3.1/95/98[pre-SE] and NT 3.51/4.0, are not supported.
So KM are not going to help you. But the LinuxFoundation does provide a workaround that should allow you to print. Have a look at this web page. You will need to install all three packages as per the instructions from that page.

  • Can't get iPhone 4 to work with SpeakOut SIM

    Hi there,
I have an iPhone 4 that was previously locked on the Telus network. I had it unlocked by Telus so that I could use it with the prepaid SpeakOut carrier.
I know that it was successfully unlocked because it takes SIM cards from other carriers (e.g. Koodo). I called Telus to confirm the unlock just to make sure, and indeed, they confirmed that it was successfully unlocked. I also know that the SpeakOut SIM card works because it works fine in my iPad 2. The SpeakOut website itself also recognizes that the SIM works with iPhone 4. However, when I try to use it in my iPhone 4, I get "no service." I tried resetting it in iTunes, but now I get the following message:
"The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information."
I don't understand what is going on here. Any ideas?
The iPhone is running iOS 7.1.2.
    Thanks,
    Jon

I worked it out. In the notificn centre of viber (in settings) the "alert style button was set to none and now I have selected alerts and it works. Thought I'd post this to stop any other luddites going through 40 minutes of knuckle dragging around the room.

  • HT4053 cant get iphone passbook to work get cant connect to itunes message

passbook does not work just get cant connect to itunes message

I found a fix to this somewhere else. I don't know why it works, but it does. If you go to your date/time settings, change it from automatic to manual, then change the year to 2013, when you open the passbook app it will work. After you've opened it successfully, you can go back and change your date back to automatic and the app will work correctly from then on.

  • Can anyone assist with getting iPhone 3G to work that friend just gave me?

A friend just bought a new iPhone 4 and he gave me his 3G iPhone. It is in excellent shape and I was hoping to get it to operate, initially as an Ipod/Itouch (without phone/internet service) and then possibly with phone/internet service) if it is possible to do it using my T-Mobile sim card and service plan. The 3G phone is a 16GB Model A1241. My friend wiped off all apps and information so the only thing that comes up when I turn it on is the diagram indicating to connect to iTunes and the emergency call function screen. I don't know which version of operating system is on it. It has a sim card in it which is for AT&T. Can someone please give me the steps (and the order in which to do each) necessary to 1. Upgrade the OS 2. Unlock the phone 3. Download the basic iphone apps 4. Use Wi-Fi (I have wireless in my house) 5. Download my music and sync such things as "notes and calendar", 6. Get the phone to operate using my T-Mobile service (I can upgrade my plan to include the internet if the phone will accommodate that function). I know this is a lot to ask but I'm really clueless when it comes to this. If there is software (free or for fee) that you would recommend to accomplish these task, please feel free to list them. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

A no longer activated iPhone can be used as an iPod Touch.
To install a firmware update on a no longer activated iPhone or to restore a no longer activated iPhone with iTunes if wanted or needed, the no longer activated SIM card must be inserted in the iPhone - the SIM card that was used with the iPhone when it was activated, which you have.
The iPhone is sold in the U.S. as carrier locked with AT&T only. AT&T does not unlock the iPhone for any reason or under any circumstances.
    1. Upgrade the OS
If the current firmware version hasn't been installed, you should be prompted to do this the first time you connect the iPhone to iTunes on your computer. Just follow the prompts.
    2. Unlock the phone
    Already answered.
    3. Download the basic iphone apps
The iPhone includes basic apps - the basic apps are included with the iPhone's firmware/OS. If you want to download and install any 3rd party apps from the iTunes app store, you need an iTunes account.
    4. Use Wi-Fi (I have wireless in my house)
The iPhone includes wi-fi access and a no longer activated iPhone can be used as an iPod Touch with wi-fi access for internet access.
    5. Download my music and sync such things as "notes and calendar"
To transfer music from your iTunes library, this is selected under the Music tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. When your iPhone is connected to iTunes, it will be available under Devices in the iTunes source list. Select the iPhone under Devices to make the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes available.
The iPhone supports syncing notes with the Mail.app notes feature on your Mac. You can sync calendars/calendar events with iCal and contacts with the Address Book on your Mac.
    6. Get the phone to operate using my T-Mobile service (I can upgrade my plan to include the internet if the phone will accommodate that function).
Already answered. The iPhone is sold in the U.S. as carrier locked with AT&T only.

  • Anyone get iPhone VPN to work?

I've been able to successfully configure the iPhone's VPN so that it connects to my corporate VPN, but it won't pass any network traffic. I've tried to use my corporate mail account, intranet web sites (both by fqdn hostname and ip address) and no tcp/ip traffic is passed.
I have the very same username/password PPTP+MSCHAPv2 based VPN connection on my iMac at home and it works just fine.

  • Cant get Apple TV to work properly with older flat panel TV.

I have an older flat panel, a 42" philips 42pf9630a. This one:
    http://www.retrevo.com/support/Phili.../278bh337/t/2/
I plugged my brand new Apple TV into the HDMI and switched input on the TV. I can see the Apple TV main menu but it blips in and out, toggling between the main menu and snow. Obviously there's some sort of communication issue between the Apple TV and my Philips. I have successfully used this apple TV on several other TV's in the past couple of months.
Is it because my TV is too old? Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this??
    Thanks for your help!

Go in to the network and sharing center (in control panel), with the pc connected by wire. Right inder the little "map" of her network, it will list the available networks (probably only one listed), click customize and set it to private, you can also name it if you want so its more easily identified.
Also, make sure file sharing and network discovery are "on".

  • Getting my wrt150n to work with my apple mac book pro

    Hey guys,
I went round and round with everyone on this. I read the forums, called support, went to apple, and *finally* figured out a semi easy solution. This will fix dropped connections when waking from sleep and allow you to run your router in mixed mode (and significantly improve range and speed).
1.) Clone your desktop's mac address.
Open a browser and go to 198.168.1.1. There is an option under the wireless tab for it.
2.) Switch to WEP 10-hex security (if you are using security at all).
Enter a 10 digit number in the key1.
3.) Go to your mac book and open up the network preferences in your system preferences control panel.
a.) First clear out all your locations..especially ones associated with all the mess-up associated with trying to get your new wireless to work. Do this by selecting the Location drop-down menu and select Edit locations.
b.) Next Click on Airport from the network status screen (you should be on it) and click Configure... at the bottom. At the next screen, click options. For, If no recent networks are found, select: Keep looking for recent networks. Click OK. Now you shouldn't drop connections after a few minutes of inactivity!
c.) You should be back at the airport screen, at the bottom there is an Assist Me... button. Click it then the Assistant... bfind your networkutton afterwards, name your new location, click that you use Airport, find your wireless network and enter your 10-digit key.
    You should be set!
    V

One more thing....I changed the wireless settings to wide band only....that seemed to increase the speed and range.

  • HT3771 Hi, I cannot get my HP2200dn to work with my Intel macs after updating to Snow Leopard

Since installing Snow Leopard I can only print using my HP Laserjet 2200dn mono laser printer if I print via my old G4 which is running Tiger.
The G4 has the HP printer as a shared printer and is connected using Appletalk.
Obviously this is very inconvenient as the old G4 is not always on!
I have downloaded and installed two lots of Apple printer driver updates, along with the latest version of Gutenprint.
I have tried resetting the printing system, all to no avail.
No matter what I try the printer keeps pausing before doing anything and pauses again within a few seconds of restarting.
I have tried various printer drivers with no effect, including the Gutenprint one.
    Any help gratefully received!

Thank YOU for notifying us of the solution that worked.  Very much appreciated.  May work for other users with the same issue as yourself.

  • Cannot install printer driver powerpc no longer supported, but works on older mac

Since I use the same driver on an old Mac Book Air, which had a Lion upgrade put on it, whats the problem?
Yes I have a Dell 3115cn printer, which I use on PC's and My Mac Book Air.  The Air was upgraded to Lion and works fine with this printer... All is well
So I buy another MAC Book air, which has Lion pre installed on it.  Used migration assistant to copy Mac, but failed.  Could not log into main user, FileVault problem.  So start with a new user on  new mac.  Shame.
So I go to install the DELL 3115cn driver and I get the message "You can't open the application Dell 3115cn Installer because PowerPC applications are no longer supported".  Which I under stand what it means, but the same driver works fine on the other Lion machine.
Does anyone know if I can by pass this validation?    surly the message is completely wrong, else it would not work on my older mac (with lion installed)
May be only the installer is PowerPC stuff.  In which case does anyone know how to copy the Printer driver of the older mac.  Is that possible?

    Hello,
the problem is not the printer driver that does not work in Lion, the problem is the installer application which seems to be a PPC based application.
Eventually you may just copy the DELL printer driver itself from the working Air to the system in question.
You will find the appropriate folder (Printers) either in the user's Library or the systems library, depending of the former DELL installation method of the driver.
There will be a subfolder named DELL
As both library's are hidden in Lion you have to use "go to" -> "go to folder" from the menue bar to access the library's.
